Making fresh cookies that look fossilized is quite the achievement.

https://preppykitchen.com/shortbread-cookies-recipe/#recipe I used this recipie, I think the cheesecake aspects come from the fact that I used a really really rich butter and slightly underbaked the ones she ate. I also think she's never had shortbread before but it's a compliment so I'll take it haha.

I follow this channel, I love it! So I'll trust his recipe and consider your (adjustments?) Thanks for the recipe/tip! Questions: Was it cultured butter you used by chance?

It was the New Zealand butter costco sells that come in the shiny green packages. A similar kind might be kerrygold. And I was a bad baker and used the salted butter haha. Also the flour is sifted whole wheat so I'd try to use that as well. The dough was more crumbly than I think it was supposed to be, probably because of the whole wheat flour.

These kinda look like the homemade fossils I made for a science fair in elementary school

I'm interested to see if anyone can correctly identify why they are grey. Ingredients are, flour, butter, confectioners sugar, salt, and vanilla extract.

Buckwheat flour? Or chestnut flour? Some kind of non-traditional-wheat flour?
View on Reddit #58452313

QuirkyCookie6@reddit (OP)

Yes! It's a non-traditional wheat flour, specifically Utrecht blue wheat. It was really interesting, my butter was yellowish, and so the dough before baking had a greenish grey cast to it, but after baking they look completely like rocks!

Haha, yeah, I'll have to admit I wasn't expecting so many people to react negatively, I thought it might be a fun little game, but woke up to this. Oh well πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I respect the A+ hustle, here is a gif I found for you ![gif](giphy|3o7TKJG8p39T1hJFLO|downsized)

Holy shit an actual A+!!!! Yeah most people aren't food nerds who are familiar with more than one type of flour. Heh. I look so smug right now.

The alcohol in the vanilla extract did something? Waaaaay too much vanilla extract maybe?

Let me take a guess; it’s cause you’re not a good baker?

Did you leave the dough out uncovered for a long time?

Im guessing confection sugar reacts differently when baked than granulated white/brown sugar? I've never seen gray cookies, but my rule is always "if it tastes good, who cares?"
View on Reddit #58423898

QuirkyCookie6@reddit (OP)

You're pretty close, and is ingredient related, although confectioners sugar is just finely ground sugar and cornstarch and wouldn't cause a reaction like this.

geezeslice333@reddit

Why are they gray though?
View on Reddit #58452131

QuirkyCookie6@reddit (OP)

Someone else guessed it! It's because of the flour I used. I used flour from a type of blue wheat, and when combined with the yellow butter it made kind of a greenish grey dough, after baking the greenish tint disappeared and now we have rock cookies.

Hot-Bathroom4345@reddit

why grey
View on Reddit #58456712

QuirkyCookie6@reddit (OP)

Someone in the thread guessed it! It's because I used a type of blue wheat, and when mixing with the very yellow butter, it made greenish grey cookie dough, and after baking the greenish seemed to be gone leaving only grey rock like cookies.

I’ll guess crowded pan, underbaked at too low temp
View on Reddit #58423469

QuirkyCookie6@reddit (OP)

It is not related to the baking process
