Best hunting rifle in 308/6.5 for under $2500 (just rifle)?

Looking for a hunting rifle and I don’t want to spend like $10000 on something like an AI because I am a poor person.
Budget will be about $5k-$6k all in for the scope and rifle.
Also must be CA compliant. I already have a good LR308 that I built, so I’m leaning towards bolt action anyway.

You just want a hunting rifle? You can get plenty of fantastic rifles with a really solid scope for under $1500 total. We're in the golden age of affordable rifles and optics for any purpose you can think of.

Best 6.5 Creedmore I have personally shot was a Bergara. Brothers rifle. From a bench, it will group bullets on top of each other with a cost effective Hornady factory load, I bought a case of.
The best 308 hunting rifle I have is a Steyr Scout. This is from the late 1900s. I honestly don't know how good it is. There are a lot of features I like about it. If you are into the scout concept, then there is that. If you are not, move the scope back to the normal spot. Probably the biggest down side is that there is nothing you can change about the rifle. If tomorrow something broke and Steyr said FU, I am stuck.
Both of these are carryable synthetic hunting rifles.
At your price range, I think you could also do something semi-custom, custom. For precision, I don't think you will beat the above, but if you are doing the type of hunting where you will not beat a rifle to death... WOOD looks very classy. I love looking at wood stocks. (I hunt with synthetic because I do hunts which destroy wood.)

We build custom rifles, and the two most popular options for deer hunting right now are the 6.5 CM and the 6.5 PRC. The PRC has more knockdown, but the CM has less recoil. You can't go wrong with a traditional .308. For a stock gun, Springfield Waypoints are awesome! Rugers are way better than they used to be.
No matter what you buy, practice is the key to taking them down. Make your targets smaller. This makes you better.

Springfield Waypoint 2020 is cool. Or if you want a classic, Ruger M77 with the Zytel stock. There’s so so many 308 bolt action rifles in that price range.

Tikka or Weatherby are both offering very solid options at your price point and below. If you know the ranges and lighting conditions which set your scope requirements, spend more on the scope than the rifle. There are plenty of very accurate rifles at price points of $1000 and under.
