In 2025, police officers in Osaka, Japan were seen patrolling with Glocks. (From the grip, it looked like a Gen 5, but the model could not be identified. Someone on the Internet said it was a Glock 45, but I could not find the source. Can anyone identify it?)

this is a great move from Japan, this move is really necessry in the modern day and age
WayneZer0@reddit
i mean guns are really rare in japan. so nogmal street cops dont need the most modern weapon if the highst treat are some idiots with bats. for everything else thier have thier swat like units.
HistoricalVariation1@reddit
true, but using revolvers in this day and age is crazy, using 10 round mags or something similar is probably a good idea, if you want to limit officer firepower
GasGulls@reddit
I read some statistics about a year or so ago, so I can't remember the exact details, but it was about Japanese police using firearms. It was something like that in like a ten year period, Japanese police (excluding armed response and counter terrorism) only had two incidents where an officer had drawn their firearm, and in neither of those had they discharged that firearm. As immigration to Japan rises, that may change, but those statistics weren't that old when I read them.
HistoricalVariation1@reddit
I agree, but carrying 5 shot snub nosed pocket revolvers in 2025 is insane, Stats probably wont change much over time but you need to use semi automatics in 2025, if you are going to have an armed police force they should have reasonably modern equipment.
OrganizationNo42069@reddit
It’s not insane if the threat level doesn’t dictate something with higher capacity.
You repeating its “insane” and “crazy” doesn’t actually make it any more dangerous for them.
BadgerBadgerCat@reddit
Why? Japanese police aren't dealing with the same sort of threats as police in the US. A revolver with six rounds still does the job really well there, especially since 90% of the point of a gun for Japanese police is to have a gun when no-one else does.
BigHardMephisto@reddit
Iirc there was an uptic in officer related shooting accidents in the US when they started shifting from double action revolvers to semi-automatic handguns.
Probably rookie cops being nervous + lighter trigger pull.
HistoricalVariation1@reddit
yeah, Japanese cops seem to be well trained and competent that kind of increase is probably unlikely here, but we will see
AngrySoup@reddit
Revolvers seem perfectly adequate for police use in Japan.
WayneZer0@reddit
sure but thier do have style. and tradition of use. the tradition part is very important in japan.
HistoricalVariation1@reddit
True but I feel recent Japanese history has shown that they are willing to move ahead with the times when necessary
WayneZer0@reddit
sure but it still importen to not throw away you culture for progress
warriorscot@reddit
They're really more tradition than practical use, Japan has lower crime rates than the UK where officers aren't normally armed at all. They wouldn't like being disarmed, but if you don't actually need them armed the level of the armament is a little irrelevant.
I imagine at this point it's simply cheaper to move to something else and they don't want to deal with not arming policy given Japans issues with changing anything at all. And of course all that Osaka expo money has to go somewhere.
Gitzser@reddit
yesterday there was a post of Japanese cops with old S&W, now its glocks
following intensely to see if tomorrow they'll have laser guns
freedom_viking@reddit
They already got the Miku beam
Annual-Emu-445@reddit
tomorrow they'll carry 10mm caseless rifles :D
TheDarkRider@reddit
I wouldn’t be surprised if there were Japanese police Gundams running around
BrotherBaker@reddit
Those are patlabors, if we’re being accurate.
gentsuba@reddit
Well they have a Railgun program for their Navy going on,so maybe in a few years....
WurstWesponder@reddit
I’m amazed they updated from their S&W revolvers. Not much need for more than a sharp stick in Japan.
the_sjcrew@reddit
That's assuming the status quo for Japanese civilization, which, I'm sure you're aware, has to account for modern warfare. Tourism/foreigners are reportedly more scrutinized these days, too. Even without hard data on what crimes will take place and when, this is a very good time to tech up for them.
FlyingLingLing@reddit
Forgotten weapon?
Alarmed-Owl2@reddit
Japan did seem to forget what semi automatic firearms were for a while there
Superb_Cellist_8869@reddit
I’m naive when it comes to this, what exactly do you mean?
Alarmed-Owl2@reddit
Most of Japan has issued revolvers to their armed police for decades, so a return to a semi automatic platform is kind of a "forgotten realm" to them.
DVM11@reddit
They really like revolvers
deathclawiii@reddit
IIRC something like 6 or 7/10 police officers (beat cop or equivalent) in Japan won’t ever have to actually draw their service pistol, so for a long time there just wasn’t really a need to upgrade considering how rare their use was.
MentalRain619@reddit
How to forget when Ian covered one of the most forgotten weapons... the M1911
Gnoobl@reddit
Not with that beefy AF lanyard.
He won’t forget his weapon anywhere
karramba_@reddit
Yeah, my thoughts exactly.
Winter_Pattern4136@reddit
What is he holding in his left hand is it a barrel or flashlight or something
danner1987@reddit
Judging by the hole in the barrel it’s a 9mm
Pepe_the_clown123@reddit
Osaka PD dont mess around, I remember there was a video of them raiding a yakuza office, people in the comments joked that they sounded more like the yakuza than the actual yakuza
Accurate-Basket-7123@reddit
Hey, if anybody has a link to that video you’d be an hero in my book
qlvnch@reddit
I think it’s this one
Pepe_the_clown123@reddit
yeah this is it haha
MlackBesa@reddit
I think I saw it lmao, they were screaming and rolling R’s SUPER fucking hard lmao, shit was terrifying
lesnortonsfarm@reddit
Obviously manicured hands is a must
Jim556a1@reddit
That's the beefiest lanyard I think I've ever seen.
MezzanineMan@reddit
I assume it must be cut resistant (or proof)
MlackBesa@reddit
And its linkage to the pistol, oh my! You could probably tow a tiny vehicle using that.
lifes-a_beach@reddit
Jason Clower from the type 56 YouTube channel has a great video on what happens when these Asian police forces with revolvers come up against heavily armed, determined opposition. Spoiler alert they get the ever loving shit kicked out of them. (https://youtu.be/KqJKprWHhps?si=P78FQE5KQVT-fCFV )
MlackBesa@reddit
It’s over guys. Even Japan has fallen to the modern pistols. Howa Type 20 move along and get AR-carcinized.
AvtomatKalash74@reddit
It’s either a 17 or 47, too long for a 45
squeakyglider44@reddit
The first thing I thought when I saw this post was 1Q84
puzzle_head1@reddit
Yes it is most likely a Glock 17 or Glock 45.
cor1912@reddit
What holster is that?
