Wanting an e-bike, is anything in the $500 range not a scam?
Posted by Ok_Key_4868@reddit | ebikes | View on Reddit | 158 comments
The cycrun on Amazon is the first result and most appealing to my untrained eye, with "decent" reviews on YouTube. But now that every ad I see is for ebikes (that's how it goes) I'm seeing this identical frame pop up everywhere with different branding. Is this some kind of drop shipped bike? Am I screwing myself over if I get anything under $700?
For reference, I'm doing a light commute to work with whatever bike I get. 2 and half miles on paved bike routes. No offroading, no serious inclines. Anything over $500 will cut into my savings more than I'm comfortable with. Is this a safe bike to get or I will I be down $500 in 8 months time with a bike that ended up being a scam?
Dazzling_Meat837@reddit
I bought mine for 750$ plus tax from Aliexpress It’s the deepower S7pro mine has the 1500w and the longest range of 100miles but if you get the one without the top battery you can get it around 500 to 600, I bought it because my friend had it over a year and he’s been loving it
Several-Local-9865@reddit
Should i get a used one for 500 ? It is the same model as yours, and is there any flaws or issues I need to watch out when U buy it?
Dazzling_Meat837@reddit
The only thing is, I would recommend upgrading the brakes to hydraulic and potentially the suspension but other than that, it’s been great, if I were you, I would be cautious because you never know what’s the cycle of the batteries what’s their condition buying used you get that risk since they’re not cheap to replace.
Several-Local-9865@reddit
Oh thanks! The dude just said that it his birthday gift, but he has never had a chance to use it, and the mileage is only 1 mile. Let’s hope the battery can holds!
Dazzling_Meat837@reddit
Oh okay that’s fine as long as the battery didn’t sit empty for too long because it does damage the battery and limit the charge capacity
Several-Local-9865@reddit
I just got it, the speed is fast for a budget e bike. Oh what is the range for you when you use it?
Dazzling_Meat837@reddit
Congrats, I never completely used all the Range the longest ride was 30 miles, and yet I didn’t charge it when I got home. I took it for a short 5 mile spin. I was totally fine. The advertise 100 miles. One thing to keep in mind unfortunately my tire went low and this is because of those amazing potholes. We have here in Florida if I were you, I would reduce the tire pressure to like 18 psi instead of 20 so I can reduce the risk.
Several-Local-9865@reddit
Oh okay, I will check it for sure, I mean I used to have a GT73 so I know how dual battery works. I hope there are no issues or problems with the batteries!
Dazzling_Meat837@reddit
I just added some cool bits to mine

That commute will take you 10 mins on a regular bike
Ok_Key_4868@reddit (OP)
im currently making the commute on a regular bike, issue is i get sweaty and have to shower then change clothes at work which causes me to wake up an extra fourty five minutes early and wash double the amount of clothes. I feel like having something with a throttle can allow me to just ride to work in my office clothes and significantly cut down on other tasks involved with that.
Vegetable_Network310@reddit
Same. Regular bike trip takes me 15-20 minutes by regular bike but I'm sweaty and not fresh for a day's work. Had an ebike (stolen...another story) and decided since the escooter would do the same job (commute in less than 10 minutes, no sweat), I bought one that hits 20 mph...only $300 and it's less than 30 pounds. I always used throttle only on the ebike so what's the point of a big, heavy ebike if you're just using it to commute? Bike probably safer than a scooter but if you're running flat and smooth escooter is the better option IMO.
If I want exercise I have a bicycle. If I want to commute I have an escooter.
Small-Grass-1650@reddit
Sounds unfortunate, it takes me more than 10 minutes before I start sweating unless it’s extreme heat. You could just ride a little slower? Maybe an e-scooter would be better? Cheaper and more secure as you can easily take it inside
Ok_Key_4868@reddit (OP)
Could an e scooter handle 15 inclines reasonably? I'm open to it

Costco has an awesome warranty and return policy.

I have an older model Jetson. Was $180 used from a LBS and definitely a great intro to e-bikes. I think buying from an American brick-and-mortar retailer is a good option as they will often have some quality guarantees and be easy to go back to.
From Amazon it seems pretty disparate. Based on the reviews I'd say most people are happy but there's a chance parts are misaligned or flaky because the companies might not do a lot of quality control or scrap production runs with some issues. You can do returns through Amazon but it may be kind of a pain with something as big as a bike.
Silly-Bookkeeper-673@reddit
These are crap. I work as a mechanic and for the most part you really can’t work on them and anything you try to fix ends up being a massive headache to the point that many shops will turn you away. Cheapest option would be to fit a bafang or equivalent kit on an old bike which can be semi-challenging. As far as buying new in the low price range, rad power and lectric are pretty solid bikes for the price.
Fit-Negotiation-1671@reddit
Agree with all that. You need someone who will accept working on it, and good bike shops will usually decline.
Fit-Negotiation-1671@reddit
You can build an E-Bike from a kit. Good motor kits with everything are about $500; a good quality battery another $500-$600 (that might last 3-7 years). This can be put on a road, gravel, or mountain bike that costs $500-$800 used for a decent quality one with disc brakes. Total is about $1500-$1900 for a user-servicable, programmable quality ebike with available generic type parts. Might cost $200-400 to have someone build it for you if you can't do that yourself. You will have a bike with much more power and longer range than most any prebuilt ebike you could buy for up to $5000 (or more). Not as pretty or refined, though. Getting back to $500 budget, I occasionally see bikes built up like I described for under $1000 used. The biggest question is usually age and condition of battery, like a car or a phone.
FrogsMakePoorSoup@reddit
I just built one from a kit with an old mountain bike for $650usd, and I wouldn't go any cheaper.
acmazn@reddit
What kits did you use?
FrogsMakePoorSoup@reddit
Voilamart 1000w with a 20ah UPP battery. First attempt and it worked out well, certainly better than bikes costing hundreds more. It's pretty heavy at around 27kg but there's enough power to get me up the hills and buzz along at 40kmh on the flat.
acmazn@reddit
aw man i cant find any voliamart kits in my region
FrogsMakePoorSoup@reddit
I got mine off eBay. Are you in Europe?
acmazn@reddit
Yes
FrogsMakePoorSoup@reddit
I just checked and the Voilamart site will ship to Italy. Maybe try your address there.
lancena_bro@reddit
Look up TDR. That’s what I used for my conversion.
acmazn@reddit
only ships to australia
lancena_bro@reddit
Oh bugger. I got mine from eBay. They might ship elsewhere through there rather than their website. 3rd party people also sell them on there.
lancena_bro@reddit
Yep I did the same thing with mine for probably same cost. $1050aud. Much better option if you already have a bike to use.
FrogsMakePoorSoup@reddit
Yeah nice. I just picked up an old Giant in good condition, Voilamart kit with a quality 20ah battery and bolted it all together. It's nothing amazing, and my scooter knocks it out of the ballpark, but it's got awesome range and it is a fun project to see just how much shit you can connect up on a bike.
lancena_bro@reddit
Yeah nice. Mine is 2000w 52v 20ah goes pretty good. Max speed I’ve done down hill was 72km/h so about 45mph
dodonpa_g@reddit
I think a pretty good ebike should be between $500 to $1500. If you're buying online, make sure you're buying from the manufacturer under sellers name. I saw a guy online post about getting a normally priced $1K bike for $500 and the seller's name looked like a scammer name.
rfathernheaven@reddit
The one thing I will say about range is this, if you use it in assisted mode where you pedal and it helps out your range will greatly extend. If you use it like an electric moped then you're probably going to be pedaling you really heavy bike at some point in time, sooner than you think.
Objective_Ad1386@reddit
So I have the stepped up one from this and a few notes:
The website has very different stats than amazon
My pedal just wore itself off and the brakes are poop.
I've had it for a month and the bike is great but is cheaply made
I payed about 1000 and don't regret it yet but it came with some defects and needed slight adjustments.
MadDog_2007@reddit
Maybe if you don't believe a thing they claim about the battery life. Your range at 28mph will likely be under 10 miles.
Exact-Rough5044@reddit
Electric Bike ZA02, 750W Peak... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DQ7GWY5B?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share I bought this about 3 weeks ago, and so far it has had no problems. I was skeptical at first, but it was easy to build and works great. The battery lasts a long time too
Feisty-Fuel-6837@reddit
If your looking an ebike for like cheap I'd recommend just building one out of an hybrid or MTB frame, I got a full kit for 350 off yosepower there in march, not too Powerful but worked great especially cause the whole setup was like 410 cause I used a claud butler bike for it, I didn't really know much bike mechanic stuff either I just researched it for a few hours totals and followed alot of tutorials to guide me
Opposite_Classroom39@reddit
500-1000 is FAFO range, you may get an OK one or you may not. I just hope the bad result only comes out to be disappointment and not injury.
1500-2800 is where they begin to get decent. https://www.youtube.com/@TailHappyTV I like this guys reviews, he uses them in the way I would. I suggest you or anyone else check out what he's been reviewing before you ask questions about how much to spend and what brand. I'm not saying he's unbiased but his methods seem fair and as I said reflect what I would expect an e-bike to do if I was going to use it.
BTW If you intend to pedal that monstrosity for a significant length of time, you will hate the moped seat and frame setup. Its literally designed for someone who does very minimal pedaling, at some point you will have to pedal it home. At the very least select something with a mountain bike frame.
Important_Tie_8695@reddit
If anything get a Qlife Racer, they are a little under 500 and are the best option for the price. 28mph, and around 40 miles of range.
PresentationShot9188@reddit
I actually own the bike in the picture. I JUST broke 200 miles on it with no issues. My commute is 7 miles one way so 14 miles a day. I've been riding in dense fog and temperatures ranging 32f to 83f. I have no complaints so far other than the fact that 10ah isn't enough (i wanna ride even further). For being a starter bike for $500 i can't complain.
PresentationShot9188@reddit
Also i am a rollercoaster mechanic fulltime for one of the largest amusement providers in the world. I've inspected the welds in the bike and have found them to be acceptable. I would put grommets into the openings for the controller bay because the cables rest against a semi sharp surface otherwise.
dontfretlove@reddit
holy shit you were the perfect person to answer this post lol
No_Potential1@reddit
The battery quality is 1000x more important than the welds and far more dangerous if/when it fails. These bikes are the reason e-bikes have the reputation for burning down buildings.

200 miles arent that many. Give us a review at 1000.
asslickerforyou@reddit
Electric bike is cool, but take in mind you might get a puncture often, and some of the models must be lifted to home because the tyres became flat very quickly they are heavy, mine is 32 kg if you can't fix it in place.I bought Touroll S 1 Fat Tyre Experience Urban Adventure with Touroll S1 Fat E-Bike it cost me 799£(1,080.33 $).Have 2500 miles with it.The main problem with electric bikes is that the tyre is 2 times thinner than the standard rubber of normal bikes. On top of that if you can put inside anti protective lenses for punctures they still can give you puncture.Be careful with broken bottles, sharp objects and metal wires. For 2500 miles, I have around 11 punctures of the tire but use the electric bike in London is a challenge.
Novel_Landscape_8878@reddit
I also agree with this though, 200 miles isn’t much so 600-1000 range review would be much better
PresentationShot9188@reddit
ALSO i found i am not a fan of having a bike with a seat i can't adjust. I find myself peddling alot just to help out the motor on hills.
Ok_Key_4868@reddit (OP)
seat is one thing i was concerned about. Im on the taller side, 6'1 and find i have to raise my regular bike seat pretty high to comfortably pedal. I like the idea of a more comfortable seat like this cafe racer style one but if my knees will be going into my chest when i pedal i might be miserable. Could maybe compromise by lifting off the seat when i pedal if its only occasional.
marginal_option@reddit
You might fit depending on your leg length at your height but you're probably better off with an emtb style. One that will get you by at that price level are Jasion EB5 and EBX have enough gears to make pedaling comfortable on hills and flats.
Smitty5717@reddit
I got the jasion ym1 and have no complaints so far after 200 miles only but reddit makes me feel like a cheap fuck. I got what I could afford to see if I like riding an ebike before dumping a cpl grand.
Novel_Landscape_8878@reddit
I second this, Jasion has fairly cheap e-bikes and they’re decent quality I had a Jasion as my first ebike I had a Jasion EB7 2.0 folding ebike and it was pretty good, got up to 20 mph on the throttle typically and could get it further pedaling it and the battery is 10 or 15 ah but it would last at least a 7.7 mile trip there and back with some charge left in it with some hills in between, about a 350 foot climb as that’s what I did going the next town over to visit my brother with it and then would ride it back without charging it and be fine.

I’m currently working on a Freego f2 bike that appears to be from the same manufacturer.
https://media.s-bol.com/r68omJPXPvy4/BDgK4x/1200x1200.jpg
The bike is built solidly, no question about that. I agree that all the welds look really good.
The only thing I dislike about it is the weird screw connector used on the motor. It’s one long cable that goes directly into the controller.
If the something goes wrong with the controller you basically have to cut that cable out of the old controller and rewire the whole damn bike.
Other than that I don’t think I would have any complaints about it.
PresentationShot9188@reddit

Honestly I had an emoko c91 for almost 8 months before upgrading everything… I hade zero issues… and when I got into battery building I took apart their battery to look at the quality it was a good battery and was a a true 20AH battery… I give them a thumbs up I think I paid 700( was about 2 years ago though )
disposableoutlaw@reddit
I got the one up from this—the cychunter. It’s a great bike so far for me and the specs are legal in most states. I don’t know why these get so much hate from people who have never even ridden one. I think they just hate that it’s sort of a bmx/motorcycle hybrid.
I’m 6’3” and the seat is perfect height for me to pedal if I need to, which is only up steep hills most of the time. The frame and suspension are good, the brakes and tires are on the cheaper side but you can upgrade your brakes for about $40 to hydraulic ones and keep the same rotors. I ride at least 12 miles a day sometimes more if I want to go exploring after work. Lights are solid for night riding. Fast enough to keep up with downtown traffic. Never had an issue except the factory mechanical brakes wearing out rather quickly
disposableoutlaw@reddit
Also wanted to add that you’re likely to get better customer support if you buy directly from the cycrown website instead of going through Amazon. At the time I bought mine, it was the same price either way
SnooMuffins9424@reddit
I got a couple of these type bikes, although mine are the “cafe racer” style with double shocks on the back. They’re my f around bikes when it’s just me and the missus. Have a pair of KBO Rangers for when we take the kids out with us. I love these little guys, great big fat tyres, suspension is ok, front can be a bit rough but I’m wearing them in. I’m 5’10” and wife 5’3” so perfect for us. Battery seems great so far but I’m sure we will all die a fiery death as anyone who paid more for their bike tells me.
Feeling_Solid_7078@reddit
Me personally, I’d never buy an e-bike on line, especially if it’s from China. I’ve done lots of repairs on my bikes over the years, but at my age now I don’t need the aggravation. I had a tech issue 6 moths in and my Velotric dealer came and picked it up, and delivered it a week later, free.
Norrinradd194@reddit
I bought a 5th wheel mate from Amazon. Cheapo Chinese bike.
Took it to a bike shop and had them put better brakes on it and had them just give it a once over and tighten everything up.
Been a great bike, have about 500 miles on it, has enough range for 20 mile rides, probably more but I haven't gone farther than that.
It's just a regular looking mtn bike.
4t0m77@reddit
for $500 you can get an actual bike that will be an infinitely better investment for your health, safety and finances than this piece of crap.
5 miles round trip on paved, flat paths are not going to kill you. A Chinese ebike with no after-sales support will.
macross1984@reddit
There is a reason the price is $500. Lack of durability and safety.
I suggest an alternative. If you already own a regular bicycle, purchase electric bike conversion kit instead and attach that to your bicycle.
Cheaper and safer.

A reputable battery and motor usually cost around $350-$500. You’re looking to get a whole bike for $500, including the electric part.
I wouldn’t be worried about getting scammed. I’d be worried about your bike falling apart in a month, and nobody will care to help you fix it.
JulianMarcello@reddit
Worse-- a cheap battery will burn down your crib. OP needs a reputable build. Intertek (ETL) tested battery.
No_Customer_2396@reddit
* After market batteries have burned down entire apartment buildings. People think that $150 discount battery is equal to $500 OEM.
It is for this reason alone why in NYC and elsewhere ebikes can no longer be stored in apartments.
Novel_Landscape_8878@reddit
Agreed
Van_Darklholme@reddit
This bike has a 5000w motor
It can be activated once, and it lasts until the motor welds itself seized
This bike also has infinite range

You should buy a Duotts C29 best bike for the money for sure
Tank-Pilot74@reddit
In a word, no.
FireClaw39@reddit
So Vivi bikes on amazon are usually about 500 total, but the battery is about 6months to a year shelf life (which the warranty will send you another if you call) and the brakes and everything else minus the actual motor will probably start needing to be replaced in 2 years. Like, the plastic pieces will crack and break off. The electronics are still good. I've had my bike for about 3.5 years now and had to replace/diy reconnect the headlight, the bell, the lcd display plastic holder, and then the normal maintenence. But it will last you if you want a lower price. I have the one with a backpack battery that you strap on and off rather than a built on to the frame one.
standardatheist@reddit
Short answer: No. Long answer: Hahaha hahahaha haha ha... No.
NurmalMan@reddit
Chances are that it will work fine, but you will not get any support if anything goes wrong with it. The only thing to worry about would be the battery. I would not trust that thing in my home, but I guess I can sacrifice my garage in case anything goes wrong (if I were to buy it). That being said, if you are only traveling a couple miles, an e-scooter would probably suit you better. I got a segway scooter at Best Buy for $300, and it's pretty good for those short trips.

A single speed with a coaster brake is not "solid".
An 8 speed with a downtube shifter is nicely retro, probably totally reliable, but comparable to an 80s 10 speed... with 2 less gears.
mattindustries@reddit
.
I think we are arguing semantics. I am talking about reliable, standard sized parts that are upgradable. I would call that solid. They are going to give you fewer issues than nearly any 80s "10 speed" and have way stronger axles than ANY 80s 10sp, as well as sealed bearings so you don't have to overhaul the wheels/BB every 3 months.
I say this as someone with 3 copies of the 1985 Raleigh Competition, and those aren't even my only 80s Raleigh.
Superb_Raccoon@reddit
You cut off "probably", which makes for a disingenuous arguement on your part.
Well, that makes it far more than a $500 bike, with a marginal frame given the $500 price point. Polishing a turd, as they say.
mattindustries@reddit
They are reliable; I cut out worthless modifiers.
No, it comes with reliable, standard sized parts that are upgradable. That doesn't make it more than $500. All parts wear out. Better to have serviceable parts with standard sizing/threading than proprietary garbage.

Dont get me wrong, you can “overpay” for shitty stuff as well but thats on the consumer to understand what they are purchasing. I looked at 7-8 bikes (from Chinese drop ship with almost no english to quiet-cat)
Differences between a brand like velotric vs a drop ship ebay bike are VERY noticeable.

Walmart Concord is $500 and UL listed and they sell a really cheap extended warranty Ozark trail ranger at Walmart is another option.
Every single sub $1000 moped e-bike on Amazon is the same cheap quality. For every person who says they ride 3000 miles with no problems, there is a post of someone regretting their choice because it broke Abe they c aren’t getting a response from the email address in China.
Ok-Orchid8690@reddit
Watch out for battery fires with this one.
Bryan_TheEditor@reddit
this is a terrible place to ask this question, because most of the respondants are going to be ignorant Sinophobic Americans with no hands on experience with this product, just parroting shit they heard other people say.
Mundus_Vult_Decipi@reddit
Battery alone is probably going to set you back about $1000. Electric motor alone is probably going to set you back about $1000. So I'd say, start looking at $2000+ bikes, as a starting point. Better yet, build one yourself.
MandoBRC@reddit
Batteries have gotten a a bit cheaper just bought 2 28.8ah 48v upp batteries for $300 each with lg cells. 6 years ago the 20ah was about $375 same brand and lasted about 5 years. Used only in the desert a few weeks a year but on a very heavy modified trike.
Mountain_Sky9058@reddit
I just bought a second battery for mine and it was 480 and replacement motor is 300!
genesRus@reddit
Batteries are $500-800. Only high end in-tube Bosch ones or really massive capacity ones are $1000.
Motors are also not $1000 unless you go ceazy. You can get hubs around $250 and up. Mids are $500 and up.
You can still quite easily get a DIY build for $500-1000 if you already own a conventional bike that's solid, and that's the route usually recommended for budget folks.
The question is...when these prices are so trivial to look up, why are you posting misinformation? :)
eluuu@reddit
I've just bought a new battery made in the UK for £450. From reading how far he will be commuting what is he going to need a 1000 dollar battery for?
MandoBRC@reddit
I bought a small ebike for$300 on temu last year. Lasted the whole week at burning Man but I have but used it much since. But also just spent $300 on a battery pack alone for a separate project.
khavii@reddit
I bought this exact bike from Amazon. It has problems with the gearing and I can only reliable use one of the shorter gears but it's later me two years now, gets decent range, decent speed and is...ok.
I am going to buy a regular bike frame and move all the electronics to that though because this frame sucks. It's heavy, hard to pedal on and a lot thicker than it looks in pictures but it still moves me around.
gamecatuk@reddit
Wtf is that monstrosit?
Oh another cheap illegal ebike that will burn your house down.
stillyoinkgasp@reddit
No.
richardrc@reddit
There is a good chance a $500 eBike is just a piece of shit and not particularly a scam.
Elr0yJetson@reddit
Just look at the specs closely and part the bike out peice by peice. If the part cost is super different from the whole bike you might wanna put up a red flag.
canezila@reddit
My ebike is similar to the picture op posted. I got it on sale for $799. Movcan is the brand. It's a very enjoyable beast! I love it every day. I have cheaper ebikes, too, but I would not recommend the cheaper ones.
RyanEmanuel@reddit
I ordered the $700 "Cybervelo" bike for my girlfriend for mother's Day. Some things needed fixed and the frame had pitting covered up with paint near the rear wheel axle and a few other spots. I told them I wanted it replaced and since I didn't have the box (got destroyed when opening) Amazon ended up refunding me for the bike and I got to keep it. Odds are you getting reimbursed are low but I would have definitely gone for something a little more expensive and reputable. The quality control on the products you get from random ass Chinese companies mass producing the electric bikes is crap, and in the end all I was going to get from the company was 4 out of the 5 necessary replacement parts and $50.

This is the Happyrun G50 it’s a decent bike I have the pro version and it’s pretty good but in pretty it’s just a altered dropshipped version of most the bikes like it
maxxx_it@reddit
This is a great bike. But you have to add on shipping and tax.
BaldursFence3800@reddit
Thanks to tariffs! The huge shipping costs were not there 6+ months ago!
genesRus@reddit
There was a tiny folder with a battery of less than 10 mi range that was going to be sold in China for ~$300 a few years back. I believed they could hit that price for that size of battery and style of device (more like a glorified kick scooter you could sit on). It was just to help you get 1-3 mi to and from a transit hub.
Everything else sold in the US after our inflationary environment with a 20+ mi battery is either a scam or incredibly dangerous. Lectric's kinda junky (heavy folder with single speed hub and low power motor, but at least safe enough) base model is $800-900. That's your price floor for "reputable" for a "real" ebike with today's prices. Lithium batteries and shipping a bike cost what they cost.
AugySandino@reddit
My $500 actbest has served me well for 1k miles so far. Just be sure you put tire inserts in it
boogada77@reddit
I have a movcan v30, it's alright. It'll get me around 20-30 miles on mostly throttle and I haven't had a problem with it for 200 miles on the odometer. It was a little over $600 though.
FLDJF713@reddit
Built my own with a BBS02 kit from Luna Cycles. Got a $350 bike. Kit was $700 at the time.
Less than that, you’re buying junk.
kurtisbmusic@reddit
I paid under $700 for mine and it’s nice.
yip_ka@reddit
This cheap bike sold around $250 in China so $500 would be reasonable price. In terms of repair and parts I don't see any different from those high price brand. This is a common model and some luxury brand just put better parts or seats on this model and you may get better parts support if you know how to buy parts from China. But battery must be one problem from no-brand ebike. Big brand would have better battery quality control.
Hole_Milk_222@reddit
i have one!!!!! i love it (:
Hole_Milk_222@reddit
they also have dealerships in several states i believe 🫶🏼
Hole_Milk_222@reddit
also i’m not here as an add i just genuinely love my bike !!! it’s affordable and the build quality is amazing, customer service responds within the day and they’re SUPER NICE. parts are available as well. 10/10

no not really sorry
HackD1234@reddit
Not a scam, but a real potential of a serious purchase disappointment. As others have pointed out, the economics don't add up.
hegenious@reddit
Not a scam, you get what you pay for though.
