Need magnet implant removed for MRI - where in UK?
Posted by baliali@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 90 comments
Have a small magnetic body mod implant in my hand that needs removing for an MRI scan next week.
Tried so far:
GP - won't do it
NHS - says it's cosmetic
• Private hospitals - won't do it (say needs surgical removal)
• A&E - refused
Questions:
• Anyone had magnet implant removal in UK?
• Which type of clinic actually does this?
• Recommendations for Oxfordshire/London area?
Willing to pay private. Just need someone who will actually do it.
Thanks!

PLEASE tell me you didn't go to A&E with this.
The person who put it in carries the responsibility.
wtfylat@reddit
Yeah, what a monumental waste of NHS time and resources.
Disarryonno@reddit
Well, it isn’t it is? Because they didn’t do it. OP just wasted their time queuing, and considering it needs to be removed for a legitimate reason, and after already trying their GP and trying to go private, I’d be getting pretty annoyed too.
titlrequired@reddit
Probably not relevant but what was it used for?
baliali@reddit (OP)
It's a body modification - lets you sense magnetic fields and feel metal objects. Kind of like a sixth sense.
Success_With_Lettuce@reddit
That sounds really interesting! I’d say you’ll have to have it privately removed, so contact local private hospitals.
Mr_Bumcrest@reddit
It sounds like bullshit.
"It let's you sense magnetic fields" OP thinks their magneto.
CassetteLine@reddit
Doesn't sound bullshit at all.
Think it through. If I get you to hold a magnet, do you think you can sense when that magnet is near something magnetic? Of course you can, you'll feel the magnet pull.
Now if I glue the magnet to you, does it still work? Of course.
So if I implant a magnet in you, will it work? Yes.
DatGuyGandhi@reddit
Can't say I've ever been harmed by a magnet tbf
its_the_terranaut@reddit
Sure, but using the eyes that God gave me, if someone approaches me with a magnet I’m going to notice. It’s generally not a surprising event.
blither86@reddit
Of course you'd feel it, it would feel like something inside you was pulling/pushing against your insides and trying to get out. Sure it's not 'feeling magnetism' but it's definitely a way of sensing it.
Mr_Bumcrest@reddit
That's not sensing magnetic fields, that's feeling a magnet inside your skin. Achieve the same by having a necklace or holding a magnet.
blither86@reddit
There's no point, is there, because you're being intentionally obtuse. You're also wrong. Having a necklace wouldn't even come close to the level of sensitivity. Neither would holding a magnet. Besides, you'd then need to walk around holding a magnet the entire time.
New-Dot1833@reddit
Why not have a magnet stitched on a sleeve?
its_the_terranaut@reddit
Genuine q; does it work?
AddictedToRugs@reddit
Lol come on
True-Abalone-3380@reddit
You mean like in an MRI machine......
If he grabs hold of his todger whilst the magnet is rotating at 500RPM is he going to have the moment of his life?
KiwiNo2638@reddit
Probably the last moment
AddictedToRugs@reddit
No, I was meaning like a small neodymium magnet, many orders of magnitude less strong than the MRI that will rip it from OP's flesh but still far stronger than an iron magnet.
1901pies@reddit
I can do that without a magnet
Scary-Temperature871@reddit
Fucks sake 😅
tiorzol@reddit
This some peak satire.
Chicken_shish@reddit
Let the MRI do it?
octobod@reddit
Joking apart not a stupid idea. Contact the MRI. This can't be the first time this has happened.. failing that ask other MRI units for advice
enchantedspring@reddit
I doubt Radiology will be able to assist with this, it is not common at all to have magnets implanted internally.
octobod@reddit
Radiology should know how the situation can be resolved and failing that the MRI appointment should be canceled, saving clinical time.
enchantedspring@reddit
It's so rare we likely won't. It'll take ages of phone calls around to establish we have no idea what to suggest...
BunglingBoris@reddit
Fucking terrible idea
octobod@reddit
Try rereading it. note the appearance of the word advice
BunglingBoris@reddit
Yes, the advice to let the MRI remove it is a fucking terrible idea.
CassetteLine@reddit
Not sure if you're joking or not?
Their comment is obviously not suggesting to let the MRI rip it out. They're suggesting to contact the department and ask them for advice on how to get it removed, as they've almost certainly encountered this situation before.
gl_fh@reddit
This is an absolutely terrible idea, will probably shut down a multimillion piece of equipment, and cost tens of thousands in repairs.
One_Last_Pancake@reddit
This person isn't recommend just going in an MRI to have it removed. Talk to the MRI team. They might know who to go to.
gl_fh@reddit
Fair dos, must have misread it!
Ginger_Tea@reddit
I mean the first comment jokingly implies this.
But they don't want metal in there.
So if you have pins in your leg from a crash, you might not get the scan.
Every bit of piercing you have, removed on the day or beforehand. But once it's inside and known about, how big of a risk is it to you and or the machine?
You need this test, I can write a referral.
Or you need this test, until it's removed we are doing nothing, you'll have to figure it out.
notouttolunch@reddit
An entire MRI machine only costs a few hundred thousand! At worst, you’re going to dent a fairing. This is an easy to risk assess part of a design.
octobod@reddit
I am suggesting OP asks them for advice about how to resolve an issue that must have happened before and if that fails try contacting other MRI departments
gl_fh@reddit
Sorry, misread the point of your comment!
margarita_92@reddit
I understand your comment - see if the MRI department has an MR Physicist who can look into the type of metal that’s used and see if it’s safe to scan or how to resolve the situation.
bopeepsheep@reddit
Yes, if you are heading to the John Radcliffe absolutely ask their MRI team for advice. They'd much sooner help you than wreck their machines.
ryanstarman123@reddit
The mri definitely will, I remember a lady left her "plug" in thinking it was 100% silicone turns out that was a metal ball inside that ended up if her chest cavity
baliali@reddit (OP)
Ouch
Alarmed_Crazy_6620@reddit
Piercing place?
If you're desperate, I recon it's pretty doable to DIY
baliali@reddit (OP)
Message a ton and selo far no is willing to do it. Even the piercing place where I got it done. Thank you
Im_being_stalked@reddit
I’d also look for places that close earlobes. I think it’s technically illegal but there’s still some places that do it if you message privately. Try the stretching earlobes subreddit.
Alarmed_Crazy_6620@reddit
I'd also check the local FB groups as it usually has nurses moonlighting to do skin tag and similar removals – ultimately, you only need a person with a scalpel and a steady hand, not a highly qualified surgeon
baliali@reddit (OP)
Thanks i will take a look.
Alarmed_Crazy_6620@reddit
If you're captivating and magnetic, you might even get a discount
baliali@reddit (OP)
I am definitely magnetic but not so much captivating.
Alarmed_Crazy_6620@reddit
I'd probably show up at their doorstep looking a bit desperate
ashyjay@reddit
Not allowed anymore.

Silly billy
Top-State2480@reddit
Worked in MRI for 20 years, private message me what MRI you’re having, it might be ok to scan. Have you contacted the MRI department. There is a risk of heating/burns to the area.
furexfurex@reddit
You went to a&e with this?
Old-Willingness9817@reddit
Get the person that did it to remove it. If they're no longer in business, get another like business to remove it
nightmaresgrow@reddit
Out of curiosity on the point of these implants, I googled them. The below Reddit thread came up that says that people have been fine with an MRI and you can get a small shield whilst having the scan.
I'm not sure it's something I'd want to risk, but it might be worth calling the MRI department to see what the options are.

CandidPayment2386@reddit
The MRI department has the say on if its safe to proceed. The OPs been told to remove it so that's it, if the OP wants the MRI its on them to find a mechanism (and pay for it)
ForeignWeb8992@reddit
place where you had it implanted?
dupersuperduper@reddit
Try joining some body mod groups on Facebook and make a post asking if anyone nearby can remove it for you
triplecrown60@reddit
who put it in? sounds like the guys to ask how to get iy out?
sillyquestionsdude@reddit
Is it just under the skin? If so you have DIY as an option...
baliali@reddit (OP)
Kinda a hard pass on the DIY approach kinda nervous messing it up. But thanks.
sillyquestionsdude@reddit
Fair enough, i do minor surgeries to myself if needed, big splinter removal and stitching up cuts are usual. I have a high pain threshold and dont have anesthetic for dental work either.
baliali@reddit (OP)
Pains not really an issue but its thought of messing it up more than anything.
AussieHxC@reddit
Do it whilst sat in A&E ?
Possiblyreef@reddit
Good way to get a grippy socks holiday
Apidium@reddit
I don't understand what you think you will mess up? How deep is it? Usually they are just below the skin
twirlinround@reddit
How the fuck do you think telling someone to cut out an under skin modification by themselves at home is a good idea? This is so fucking dumb.
Fruitpicker15@reddit
Infection is the main risk here.
RunawayPenguin89@reddit
Bob Mortimer on Reddit?!
Alarmed_Crazy_6620@reddit
MRI can do it for you
twirlinround@reddit
How many times are you going to post this? Jesus

Not going to lie, this was my first thought!
leafveiled@reddit
Unsure if he's currently in the UK but search instagram for shiva_108
Highly competent and internationally renowned bodymod artist who's London based when in the UK. If nothing else he may know others that may be able to help.
baliali@reddit (OP)
Cheers, Will send him over a message.
Crab-Turbulent@reddit
If it's a piercing or along those lines, can't you speak to a generic piercing shop? I had to have dermal implants removed and managed to get them removed in Japan, twice, so I'm sure you can find a piercing shop here...
jesuisnick@reddit
I don't understand this - surely they can do surgical removal in a private hospital? For a price of course, but it's literally what they do. They can even remove a breast implant due to patient preference, so I can't see them refusing a little job like a dermal implant removal. They might charge over the odds though, to make it worth the staff and surgery time.
baliali@reddit (OP)
Yeah. I didn't really get it either. I have messaged a few different ones and hopefully hear back.
jesuisnick@reddit
I tried googling it and it's really difficult because all the results focus on breast implants, contraceptive implants, dental implants... seems to be a small market for cosmetic subdermals. I guess you've also found this out...!
Otherwise, have you tried these poorly regulated skin clinics like that Apprentice winner started a few years ago? Not full on surgeries, but more focus on fillers, botox, other minor things?

My bracelet has a magnet on it.. does the same thing.
Also great waste of NHS time..
Rugbylady1982@reddit
What implant is it ?
CrackersMcCheese@reddit
Just go for the MRI. It will be removed quickly at no cost.
Exciting_Top_9442@reddit
Man up and cut it out haha
kestrelita@reddit
I had a skin tag removed at a 'laser and beauty clinic', so somewhere similar might be worth a try? I would recommend the one I went to, but it's in the Midlands.
davus_maximus@reddit
Can I suggest a wood saw?
McSheeples@reddit
Have you contacted the place you got it done in the first place? Otherwise try other body mod places? Or cosmetic surgeons, you can look on the BAAPS website for a list of registered surgeons in your area https://baaps.org.uk/patients/surgeons/
baliali@reddit (OP)
Yeah, He no longer does body mods. I'll take a look thank you.
