It's not about old music vs new music, though. It's about your own, personal path of novelty and challenging yourself, not just reflexively hiding within the familiar or desperately hiding your age behind current, arbitrary trends.
You can easily disappear up your own butthole in revisiting the same media for the 1,000th time, but the same goes for trying to convince yourself that everything at the intersection of teenage trends and aggressive capitalism is the most profound and most important art in the universe. If you fall into the trap of "new = better" you literally become this person:
I'm one of the weirdos I guess. I love discovering new (to me) music - one of the most youthful-like feelings of discovery you can have at this age. Probably 80% of what I listen to these days is stuff I've come across over the last ~5 years. And it serves as a bonding tie with my daughter. We share music with each other and are regular concert buddies - going to at least a dozen shows this year. Good times.
I don't care if music is old or new as long as it feels fresh and exciting to me, but it doesn't suck being able to still connect with newer metal, punk, and noise and appreciating what people are doing with these artforms. Some genres feel like they are mindlessly chasing arbitrary trends decade after decade, but the underground is as full of people pushing boundaries as ever and I love that. Art will never die.
When it comes to live music, I don't really enjoy paying $200 and seeing some legacy act put on a perfectly rehearsed show that sounds like a CD blasted across an arena. I want fuckups and chaos and whatever magic a band can wring out of that in a dive bar. I just might not be in the pit much because my old ass has crunchy bones.
I'm trying to sleep
I lost count of sheep
My mind is racing faster every minute
But could I do more?
Yeah, I'm really not sure
I know I'm running circles but I can't quit
You can't find these on youtube anymore but there was a production company called Monkey With a Gun that did paintball documentaries. They made 3 or them before it was over but those 3 soundtracks are on a continuous loop in my truck.
If you like the Tony Hawk Pro Skater Soundtrack and you can find them Look for Push, Sunday Drivers and Heroes for a Day.
Believe it or not, I got into listening to EDM for more modern music. Ask me who’s the current top hip hop, rock or pop act and honestly I’d have no clue. I think about early 2020, I stopped listening to the radio and even then the top songs I remember were Lonely and Blinding Lights. After Lockdowns I’ve no idea who came out, besides the Kendrick v Drake Beef of ‘24.
Hi. This is me. But I started listening to EDM around 1997. Haven't looked back. I have no idea what's popular on the radio these days and frankly I don't care.
Funny enough, I've started to rediscover older 90s music that I missed bc of that .. mostly biggie and pac.
Maybe 30 years from now I'll rediscover today's music?
Had something similar happen in ‘14. I didn’t listen to the radio at that point since 2010 (ended up hearing some overly produced remake of The Climb, kid Justin Bieber who I didn’t see on video until later to my amused surprise and Wheelchair Jimmy from DeGrassi joining up with Cash Money) fast forward to that year, I’m hearing about all these new acts that sound amazing and new and kept a pretty good sense everything was fine until about 2019. Enter 2020, I heard roughly those two tracks earlier but remembered this station from my Sunday delivery days A State of Trance found out it was on Spotify and the rest is history.
It was only by watching YouTube did I hear of the Kendrick Drake beef (the whole thing played out just as I was just returning to work from a broken toe and workman’s comp).
Your friend shows you new music they found on Pro Skater and you had those songs on albums for a couple of years and tired to share it with your friend when you first found them
So stoked that King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard made the cut.
All you other olds out there that haven’t been turned on to them yet, go check it out. It’s one of the only current bands that I listen to, but they’ve quickly become my favorite and it’s pretty much all I listen to. Start with I’m in Your Mind Fuzz and go from there.
