Unexpected surprise

So, was talking about music at work, and a guy asks if I have a record player. I say no, why? Turns out he salvages out of abandoned houses and whatnot. Tells me he's got vinyl laying around if I want it cause it's collecting dust at his house. Mentions metallica. So I say sure, why not. Shows up this morning and says he's gotta find the metallica and hands me van halen 1. On vinyl. Original. Pressed in 1978. My jaw hit the floor yall. Now in simultaneously looking at record players online while being extremely curious about the metallica. Lol

Si world take it all no questions asked and worry about what they are later.
Gingernutz74@reddit (OP)
That's where I'm at lol
gnortsmracr@reddit
One of the few things I regret not being diligent enough to save was an original pressing of Sgt. Pepper’s, complete with the cut-out paper badges.

Audio technica has some pretty decent budget turntables. Some have computer interface so you can record to digital.
krebstorm@reddit
Don't buy a suitcase player.
Go to r/turntables and read the pinned posts.
Welcome back to the club.
turn8495@reddit
I ❤️ that Reddit has turntables sub.
Mindes13@reddit
So no Walmart turntable?
TheJokersChild@reddit
And r/vintageaudio and r/vinyl.
NotoriousScot@reddit
WOW!!! I can’t wait to hear what you buy! I’m looking as well.
Vast-Government-8994@reddit
Vinyl is cool again
Reddit____user___@reddit
It never wasn’t😊👍🏻

Technics SL-1200 is the DJ gold standard. ~$500 US used. Very recommended
No-Hospital559@reddit
The SL-1500 is also a good unit and can be found for less than $1000.
Sauterneandbleu@reddit
I also have a vintage 1900 which is underrated. Same functionality as the 1200 but with autoreturn.
79killingtime@reddit
Can confirm. My pair from 96 still working perfectly
TheJokersChild@reddit
And still made today.
Sauterneandbleu@reddit
The later units are fantastic!

Fuck Metallica! Napster forever
Sixguns1977@reddit
Or....fuck post 80s Metallica AND fuck piracy.
from_one_redhead@reddit
I got sued. Several of my friends. I think I made 1200 a month. Ha! What dicks
Sixguns1977@reddit
No shit? Insert Butthead "Whoa, it really DOES happen" line.
from_one_redhead@reddit
Yeah. I had thousands of napsters songs. Music makes me happy
Gingernutz74@reddit (OP)
Agree, partially. Lars went batshit stupid about file sharing. But Seek and Destroy, for me, is THE riff that made me a metalhead. Always gonna have a special place in my dark heart lol. Tbh tho, st anger was so terrible I haven't been willing to listen to anything by them since.
blorplebees@reddit
Oh man, there is properly good stuff on Death Magnetic, Hardwired and 72 Seasons. Worth checking out!
Gingernutz74@reddit (OP)
Lol... Got a friend who tells me that on a regular basis. Maybe I should listen 😊

For Whom The Bell Tolls...
DIYnivor@reddit
Love their music. But yeah, it's a pirate's life for me _/)_/)_/).
currentsitguy@reddit
Do yourself a favor and get a Technics SL-J2 Linear Tracking Turntable on Ebay. It literally eliminates the possibility of dropping the needle and damaging the record. It operates with track selection and play and stop buttons like a CD Player and cant operate without the lid being closed.
Cheezslap@reddit
I just checked that out; what a wild idea!
currentsitguy@reddit
I had one back in High School, and that's what I bought when we decided to get back into vinyl. I actually bought two. One to use, and one for parts to keep the 1st one running.
Redkneck35@reddit
LoL something Gen Z wouldn't do LoL if it breaks they throw it out.
Cheezslap@reddit
Does the tonearm use a belt at actuate? Like an old school dot matrix printer?
currentsitguy@reddit
Yeah, there's a lot going on in there. The whole thing is guided by a tiny infrared/laser sensor that looks for the gaps in the groves between songs, so if you want to play, say the 3rd song, you press 3 and then Play it scans over to the 3rd gap and lowers the needle.
madtownjeff@reddit
Suprises are by definition unexpected.
Fillmore80@reddit
Skip Metallica, do Megadeth
MrSurly@reddit
My friend back in the mid/late 80s would by vinyl because it was cheaper than CDs.
fmlyjwls@reddit
I have the Sansui record player that my dad bought in 1969, in Japan. It’s sat in my closet for at least 20 years because at first it needed a drive belt, and then with a remodel I no longer had a place to put it. I won’t get rid of it and my LP’s though.
zippyboy@reddit
Did he have the vinyl first pressing of Guns & Roses Appetite for Destruction? The nasty cover that was canceled right away. I have it. No turntable anymore though.
Tinnitus-1975@reddit
I have this too, and a turntable, do I ever use it? Nope! Can't seem to find the time

rob_ker@reddit
My dad gave away original press Beatles vinyl thinking they were worthless.
classicsat@reddit
I have what I am fairly sure are original pressings of a couple early 1960s Bob Newhart comedy albums.
Gingernutz74@reddit (OP)
Nice!
88questioner@reddit
This is a very slippery slope.
The hubs inherited a very nice 70s turntable about 9 years back and now owns a very, very nice 1970s turntable that he got shipped here from Japan, fancy ass speakers that he rehabbed, and over 10k vinyl that may be worth as much as our first house. He is obsessed. The equipment he sells as he finds better equipment and he’s capped his vinyl collection at the 10k (if he wants a new one he has to sell one. Apparently something called “Discogs” is involved?
There are many worse hobbies and he tells me it all has high resale value but jeez.
000700707@reddit
It might just be a man thing haha.
Raxheretic@reddit
Awesome!
Consistent_Term_8098@reddit
