Have You Bought Anything For Last Time In Your Life?
Posted by MarcooseOnTheLoose@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 366 comments
Early GenX here. During the holidays I bought a new desktop for my consultancy side hustle. The last one lasted 13 years. And I’ve learnt how to make this one more resilient. So I thought, this is perhaps the last time I buy a desktop, perhaps the last computer, because in 15 years I’ll be long retired and there’ll be another technology.
I also bought a Carhartt jacket. The last one lasted over 20 years. Perhaps one more? My car will easily last another 10 years. Will I be driving or even own a car in my 70s? My next house will definitely be the last before the retirement home.
Have you bought your last of?
Infinite-Lychee-182@reddit
My guitar. I've owned over 40 guitars, but around 2017-2018 I had to stop playing. A couple years ago I bought my Tele and I've had no desire for another guitar, although I was gifted one.
I knew it would be my final guitar so choosing sucked. I even debated headstock breaks and went Fender instead of Gibson.
For those who know, being happy with one guitar is an anomaly in the guitar world!
Sixguns1977@reddit
How did it take you that long to get a tele?! 🙂
Infinite-Lychee-182@reddit
DISCLAIMER: Nothing in this response will add anything to your life, so feel free to ignore. I'm pretty high, and rambled on with irrelevant data. I would just erase it, but I spent like 3 hours on it! Okay, not really, but still more than I should have, lol.
Sorry about my poor words. I've owned several Teles. My first was a USA Standard I bought new in 92 while stationed overseas. My second was a used '97 USA Special, my third was a used USA AVRI 52 Hot Rod. Each Tele just got better and better to the point where the AVRI 52 Hot Rod made it to my favorite guitar. Unfortunately, years ago I was having serious issues with my hands so I sold off my gear and stopped playing. Since then, everything got expensive and my disability income was stretched. As fortune would have it, I got hit by a car by someone who rented a car, purchased extra insurance, didn't tell Enterprise his license was suspended, so Enterprise decided not to honor the extra insurance, and when all was said and done, left me with enough to buy a reasonable guitar. I wanted to try playing again, so I went for it.
Thankfully my hands are feeling better than ever, and my Tele trend continued. It's my favorite guitar ever. When choosing guitars a lot of thought went into it. Seriously, a lot of thought. Between weight, cost, enjoyment of playing, and so on my final two choices were a Tele and Les Paul Special. In the end the saying, 'Les Pauls break and Telecasters bounce' made for the final decision.
At the time, my first choice would have been another USA vintage reissue, but even an AVRI was out of my budget. As things turned out, I was able to afford a used Fender Japan vintage reissue. The model I got was normally pretty expensive. Actually, more expensive than a lot of used vintage reissues, but the guitar was modified, upgraded, and had terrible pictures on Reverb. I sent an offer kind of expecting to be rejected, but he counteroffered within my budget and I have a Tele i love.
Sorry about the rambling. I'm kinda stoned and I have a tendency to go on when I'm like this. I'm gonna add a disclaimer on top.
Sixguns1977@reddit
Very cool. Back in the mid 90s I bought a squier tele and threw a set of 1951 pickups in it. I also bought a fender thinline. I still have the squier, wish I still had the thinline. I'm a bass player, the tele is mostly just used for when I'm writing music.
Also: 1950s P Bass reissues also bounce.
Infinite-Lychee-182@reddit
Nice!

I really should donate various intruments to local school band room (guitars/flutes/trumpet/clarenet/etc). Anything I haven't played in 10 years could probably go.
One-Pepper-2654@reddit
I’ve stopped playing in bands. Way too much hassle. Basement guitarist now.
PacRat48@reddit
6 electrics & I play just 1 95% of the time
Caspers_Shadow@reddit
I worked my way up the quality scale over the years. I have a tele, a bass and 4 higher-end acoustics. I am done and will surely be downsizing over the years. I still play daily, and play all of them. So it will be tough.
Infinite-Lychee-182@reddit
It's nice to be content, but I'm not hero. I'm just broke, lol.
gibsonstudioguitar@reddit
I also have my #1 guitar.. and a 2 and 3
e-zimbra@reddit
Are we all just planning our death now??
MarcooseOnTheLoose@reddit (OP)
Not yet. Though a little planning at our age doesn’t hurt. Weird thing, I’ve lost four GenX guy friends since October. Go figure. Some much rubber left on the tyres.
Another item that is possibly the last is my winter coat. I bought it when I lived in the snow belt 20 years ago. Then I moved to a warmer city. I only use it 2-3 times a year. It’s in mint condition and very fashionable. Unless the stitches come apart or it’s eaten by mites, I’ll never buy another.
Resident_Zebra933@reddit
I bought a new Jeep in 2022 and paid a premium for it because of Covid. F'n motor took a shit 4,000 miles out of warranty and I had to have a new motor put in it on my own dime. I now own a very expensive Jeep that I will have keep the rest of my life in order to justify it's cost.
Sixguns1977@reddit
A year or two ago I hunted down a working VCR as a gift for my wife. That's the last one.
Adorableviolet@reddit
This is sad, but I am hoping my 6 yo dog lives forever bc I don't know if we will get another.
JVBass75@reddit
We love our dogs, but look to be in the same state of mind. Our next phase of life looks like we'll be wanting to travel more, and that's just not fair to a dog.
Universe-Queen@reddit
Same. Our cats are both 7 yr old. We are 60 and 62. These are our last pets
Reason_Training@reddit
Look into senior shelter programs. There are cats 15+ who get turned into shelters when events happen. Shelters look for seniors who can take the cats the last few years of their lives and will often provide the food as well as vet care. Might just need to invest in a good robot litterbox so you don’t have to worry about scooping daily.
One-Pepper-2654@reddit
My senior cat is awesome! He is so chilled out and sweet. Got him at 15 and he’s 19 now and still going strong.
StarsAlign22@reddit
my thoughts as well.
D05wtt@reddit
Kinda same. I’m probably on my last German Shepherd. I don’t think I can handle another one from puppyhood on. They’re a lot of dog. The current one is so strong and can almost pull me down and I’m male. I may need to look for a more laid back breed.
doglady1342@reddit
I was at the vet's office the other day with one of my dogs and there was a couple in there with a young puppy. It was a Bernese mountain dog. Just absolutely adorable, but my first thought was that there is no way I can go back to puppyhood. I had four dogs up until September and now I have three. One just turned 15 and the other two are nine. I'm 55. My husband and I will not be getting any more animals until we are too old to travel. We're just gone too much. We are blessed that our son is currently living with us, so he dog sits when we travel and keeps an eye on the house. But, when he finds work in his field it could be anywhere in the country, so we can't count on him forever.
Unlike some other posters, someday I will definitely get a big dog again. My husband and I have had various breeds, mostly rescues, but my favorites have been Rottweilers and Cattle dogs. If I was looking for a chill dog, I'd choose a Rottweiler every time.
Adorableviolet@reddit
I am a big dog gal. We had Bernese, Rottie-Bernese mix and my latest is a great pyrenes-anatolian shep mix. There is something about the big guys I love.
MoparMedusa@reddit
I have a pyrenees/border mix. She is the best. Except for all the hair. Lord, she sheds!

D05wtt@reddit
Could it be because you can wrap your arms around them and give them a big hug?
CajunPlunderer@reddit
Mine is just starting to show arthritis and it's really bumming me out. I don't think I can do another GSD puppy either.
I think, when it comes down to it, I'll just rescue an old one who will sit on the porch with me.
D05wtt@reddit
I was thinking about that too.
Far_Winner5508@reddit
I picked up a Pittie/Chihuahua mix. She's a 25lb chihuahua grande with muscular build and weird chihuahua personallity.
No-Baker-4543@reddit
Jack Russell, GS trapped in a small body. A lot of fun!
MarcooseOnTheLoose@reddit (OP)
I grew up with GSDs. My last one died nearly 25 years ago. I miss them, but not the work. I don’t know if I want another.
Ianthin1@reddit
We have had a GSD(9) and chocolate lab(7) and definitely won’t get big dogs again once they are gone. My parents have Scottish terriers mostly because they don’t really shed and are great if you have allergies, we will probably go with a breed like that just for ease of maintenance.
getaclueless_50@reddit
We've thought this too. I was talking with my daughter about how I wanted a parrott and said she would have to be ok with it because she would inherit him.

My ex wife kept the critters when we divorced. Made it much easier for me. I know (knew, they aren't around anymore) they were well taken care of and I can't handle that responsibility anymore.
As much as I would love to rescue another pit, I can't imagine anyone when I can in my future.

Beautiful-Yak-9287@reddit
I've always had dogs and currently have a 7-year old dog and just adopted a very adorable but rambunctious 1 year old dog. I'm 51 and I thought to myself, this will probably be the last dog i adopt. She's a smaller dog so hopefully she will live a long life and grace us with her goofy presence well into our 60's!

My dad is 83 and he looked at his car and said “well I guess this is my last car.” It made me really sad. As a young man he had a Jaguar, as a young father a big station wagon, and other cars along the way that we took family trips in or worked on in the driveway.

I’m 55. My mother just gave me 36 rolls of toilet paper. I have a bidet. This should last me about 25 years. By then we should have the three sea shells.

Showing my age: I actually worked on that movie.
CriscoWithLime@reddit
They imploded a building here in Louisville for that movie. Blew out several windows next door at the company I worked for.
Sintered_Monkey@reddit
Didn't know it was shot in Louisville! I was in a soundstage in Burbank the whole time.
CriscoWithLime@reddit
I dont know if this sub allows links. If this doesnt work just search for demolition man Louisville on you tube. First one should be WLKY's. https://youtu.be/mcxMAk7Yqo8?si=sxPNApMMJ6GOazSw
Plus_Inevitable_771@reddit
Damn! One of my favorites.
themuleskinner@reddit
I need details! In what capacity? Were you cast or crew? I love the production design on Demolition Man and the "comic book" feel of the look, story and plot. Started my crush on Sandra Bullock and was a great vehicle for Denis Leary
Sintered_Monkey@reddit
Crew. If you remember the big robotic claw that picked up the frozen convicts, the first version didn't work. I worked on the second crew that came in to rebuild it, along with other things. The production was actually a huge mess, so I guess the FX contract got yanked from the first company and awarded to the company I was working for. What I actually did on that project was not a whole lot. We had a super sharp foreman who had a good idea of how to rebuild everything, so for the most part, he'd bounce an idea off of me, and I'd say it sounded like a good idea. As it was a union job, I wasn't actually allowed to touch a whole lot.
themuleskinner@reddit
The cryo prison! Thanks so much for revealing how you worked on the show. I have worked cast and crew on jobs over the years in different capacities and always love to hear crew stories. The industry is in a very weird place right now with the tightening of the belt of media conglomerates since the 2023 strikes and advent of AI putting everyone out of a job
Sintered_Monkey@reddit
I was working on film and TV projects really early in my career. I was never able to get a union card, so it wasn't financially feasible for me to keep scraping along like that. I mostly worked on that sort of thing when I was between steady jobs.
Opus-the-Penguin@reddit

LarrySDonald@reddit
We got one and I hate it. It’s like that thing where you poop and water splashes back up on your ass, but 10x abd colder. Sticking with TP. My wife loves it though.
doublebr13@reddit
I will definitely be going with a warm water version. We've used them at hotels in Europe and Asia and when done right, they are fantastic
from_one_redhead@reddit
I am staying at my mom’s while I find a new house. She told me because of the low flow toilets, I had to flush 2x. I told her we should install bidets as I have them previously. And she looked disgusted! I was like yeah, taking paper and rubbing yourself with it then flushing 2x is a much better idea! And she buys the big fluffy toilet paper I just buy bamboo paper for my bathroom and I told her I’d throw that in the trash! I wasn’t flushing 2x lol 😆 It’s a GenX v Boomer battle royale

Beer. 10 years sober so beer is right of the menu
The_Dixco_Bunny@reddit
I mean this in the nicest way possible - don’t get cocky. I had almost 15 years sober, never EVER thought I would drink again. Relapsed in February and still trying to stop again. Life is weird!
fcewen00@reddit
Nah, not trying to be cocky, more hopeful. I survived my fathers passing in March and the subsequent wake at my cousins brewery so those have been two fairly big tests
The_Dixco_Bunny@reddit
I understand! I survived the suicide of a good friend, the unexpected death of the mom of friend, deaths of father and father in law, and covid. What put me over the edge was the sudden death of my dog. I hope you never experience this and are sober for the rest of your life! ❤️
fcewen00@reddit
She’s 12, so I don’t know. My real risk will be after next year when both my kids go off to college. I’ve got to find some all encompassing hobby to fill their void

I survived my daughter going into the Navy, being deployed to the Middle East, and all the craziness that goes with that. She now lives in a different state with her 3 kids and lives a great life.
Hearing stories like mine will (hopefully) make you think twice - and that’s why I’m telling you. There’s no judgment, no bad intent… just hope that you’re stronger than me in your weakest moments. I don’t want that for you or anyone else. 😊

I got a Tilley because I have a large head/hat size (7 3/4) and they sell hats that fit me. It turns out it looks pretty good, at least according to my wife. I think I look a little weird, but then I'm a little weird, so that's fine.

I've only paid money for two out of about 40. But I'll never take another parrot into my home.
They live long lives, the four I have now are geriatric to middle aged and I'm still looking at another 15 years with them, I hope.
They're amazing and fun and so so intelligent. They comfort me when I'm sad and dance and yell with me when I'm happy.
They're also messy, demanding, expensive and time consuming. Definitely not part time pets.
And you need at least $100 to walk into an avian vets office around here.
At least I can look back and know I gave many birds a better life, but it'll be weird not having them around.

Almost there, but not quite. Current car should last through my daily long-distance commuting until retirement in a couple of years. At that point it will be "pretty dead" at around 180k miles. I've been thinking about what I'll buy then when I don't have to care about mileage, but it will likely be my last car since without work I drive about 3-4k miles per year.
Mysterious-Taste-804@reddit
Probably my winter coat.
Far_Winner5508@reddit
I picked up a Carhartt 'ranch coat' 25 years ago and besides a few frayed threads on the cuffs, it's still going strong. Has blanket lining and really warm, down below 0° F.
Any colder than that, I have a Sears puffy liner (jacket got torn up decades ago). Together, I'm set for -40°.
Mysterious-Taste-804@reddit
25 years ago!! Impressive. That's a lot of wear.
Far_Winner5508@reddit
Stained, faded. It's my goto winter coat.
But it does stay in the closet 8 mos of the year.
Mysterious-Taste-804@reddit
That last part is prob why I won't buy another winter coat. I have a good one and I only wear it 3-4 months of the year.
Imaginary-List-4945@reddit
This reminds me of how every time my great-grandma bought a new winter coat, she'd sigh and say "This is the last winter coat I'll buy." She started doing this when she was around 55 and lived to be 94, so she outlived quite a few "last coats."
One thing I have definitely bought for the last time in my life is birth control. Full menopause is just a whisper away at that point, plus I'm 53 and you're able to stop using it at 55 even if you still get the occasional period.

It sure feels like it is happening more and more. I'll be 60 this year. I normally drive my vehicles about 15 years and I will be buying a new truck. I suspect my lifestyle will have changed by the time I need another vehicle (if I ever do). I am also thinking about what I want to pare down over the next few years. I have stopped looking at guitars, sound equipment, bicycles, snowboarding equipment, the list goes on. I don't see ever buying another home stereo. I can't remember the last time I bought a power tool. I have a bunch and I have been giving them away.

Contact lens solution.
I’m about to have cataracts surgery (at 48!) and—if all goes as expected—I won’t need contacts or glasses for the first time since kindergarten.
Also, I bought my last CD and my last DVD each about 14 years ago.
I don’t buy pets, but the 2 kittens we rescued out of a neighbor’s yard a couple summers ago are the last ones we’ll get—at least in this country. We’ll probably get some wherever we end up retiring (likely Mexico or southern Europe). Easier to just wait on getting new ones than to try to import animals across borders.

I always buy everything with the expectation that it will be the last time. I genuinely didn't think I'd live this long. No, no health issues or anything like that. I just tend to end up in some life threatening situations. I've become a homebody and introvert in my later years. (49).

I am nearly certain that I bought my last motorcycle back in 2017. It was everything I wanted then and it still does the job, and it’s only got 45k miles on it now. Was thinking this when I was shopping for cars. The current one I've had for 12 years. Since then I only work 2.5 miles from home and only need to come into the office 2x a week. Even with my other driving I only manage to drive 8.5K miles a year. So literally the next car will be the "last one"

Unless something actually happens with Ticketmaster and Live Nation, I think tickets to see Jane's Addiction were my last concert tickets. I can afford these tickets, I just can't bring myself to buy them. I was excited a while back because I finally was able to start affording better seats, but nosebleeds today cost the same as those better seats. Even small venues are getting ridiculous and it's the same two causing that. It's the single most depressing thing right now. 1 has seen lots of use but has been largely superseded by another, which is my current go-to. It's lighter and quicker to set up, with a smaller footprint.

Was planning on looking for EV/Hybrid this year, budgeting for $30k - $50k price but last summer, came across a 2019 Chevy Cruz with 6400 miles on it, for $17k.
Couldn't pass up the deal, getting 40-60+ MPG and my commute costs have gone down to just 1 tank (13 gal) of gas a month. Having a small commuter car that's paid off is nice.

Plastic razors.
I discovered actual razors, with actual razor blades, about fifteen years ago. Since then, I have spent less than $100 on shaving supplies. And that includes replacing an entire razor that TSA wanted to steal from me.
When I see the Quattros and Occettos and whatever in the drug stores, I shake my head in silent wonder on how they became a thing. Actual razors work so much better.

Switching back to safety razors and shaving soap after I read up on preventing shaving bumps has turned out to be so affordable.
German Merkur razor with Japanese Feather razorblades, and Col. Conk glicerine shave soap works for me. A 100 pack of blades, using 1 blade a month (I shave 3-4 times a week) last me around 8 years. Maybe one more 100 pack of blades next year and I will likely no longer need to shave.

I bought my last Stetson cowboy hat . With the way things are going around the world , I don't know if the Stetson company can survive .
First , not many people are wearing cowboy hats . This includes trucker hats .
You see , a lot of the rabbit fur that Stetson uses to make their hats , came from either Russia or China . It is then shipped to Garland , Texas . With the tariffs and the wars , this is gonna force the company to make cheaper type hats to sell .
Most of the hats that Stetson cowboy hats are now being made of wool . The material is just not fun to wear in the summer .

Same here. I was sitting on my front porch the morning after with a headache, feeling like shit, and spontaneously decided I didn’t want to do it anymore. Surely in the top 3 of best decisions in my life.
2_Bagel_Dog@reddit
Yep. Decided it wasn't helping me get where I wanted to go (even if I don't know where that is). A week became a month became 6 months. Next thing I knew I was selling all my beer making equipment. Affected my social life, but still never looked back.
Way to go CrankyDoo!

Well my car is 22 years old now, so I will probably have to buy one more of those. I drive them until they drop, so the next one will probably be the last one.
We downsized to a condo last year and while we're fit and capable, we now don't have to use any stairs if we don't want to and I'm hoping that this is the last residence I buy.
When we moved into our condo we spent $$$ on two new premium king-sized bed sets, and our last one lasted over 20 years, so these might be the last beds we buy.
My last pair of mountaineering boots lasted almost 20 years of hard use (amazing!) but they finally gave up two years ago and I bought a new pair. If the news ones last as well, I'll be in my 80s and probably not alpine climbing. Maybe not. Okay, I will be, but a lot less so my boots won't wear out anyway.
All I can think of right now.
Bird_Watcher1234@reddit
I just replaced a 40 year old hand me down couch. It could very well be the last couch I ever buy.

$10 container of organic raspberries. Always a mushy mess. Never again.
Decisions_70@reddit
My last car. 2 years in, 3k miles. By the time I hit 100k I should be over 70 and figure I won't need one anymore.
Ouakha@reddit
My dad drives at 92!
Decisions_70@reddit
I'm not planning to. I already get most stuff delivered and won't be working so why pay for car insurance?
Ouakha@reddit
I'll probably have some new fangled ebike.
MarcooseOnTheLoose@reddit (OP)
I hope that in advance age the AVs will do the driving for me. But I hope to still ride motorbikes.
Ouakha@reddit
I had a friend who kept putting off learning to drive, waiting for AVs. He's now learning at age 53!

Tim Hortons. Won't support their discriminatory hiring practices.

I probably won’t be buying anymore cd-r discs

Hopefully car, phone, and once my cats cross the rainbow bridge that’s it for pets.

A new hip. My hubs just had his hip replaced and the doc told us it actually comes with a 30-year warranty

Last year I bought a Honda.

My boomer father is forever heaving a huge sigh and saying in a deep melancholy voice, "this is the last ... I'll ever buy". 😀

A metal roof after the last hail storm. Shouldn’t need another in my lifetime unless basketball sized hail comes…
abouttothunder@reddit
I remember my granddad saying he had put the last roof on the house that he was going to put on it. This was before he and my grandma went into care. He was right. We had to put a new roof on before we moved in.

Got a new lawnmower last year. At 55 I'm getting tired of mowing and if we don't move into a place without a yard in the next few years I'm probably hiring the plow guy to do it.
So yeah, wow. That's probably my last lawnmower.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
Lots of things. I am the buy once, best I can get/afford, and make it last type of person. The only thing I can really see needing to get newer/new is automobiles. When you live in the rust belt of America its not the driveline you need to worry about.
TMQ73@reddit
I have a Columbia 2 piece winter coat that I bought in my late teens that’s already 34 years old. My last car was 27 years old when I begrudgingly got rid of it. Surfboards from 1980 and kayaks from 1990. I could provide many more examples. Lets just say I probably have more things than most people that I have bought for the last time in my life.
Max_Sandpit@reddit
Pex tubing for under my kitchen sink. I heard Pex is not great and asked about it’s longevity. The plumber said, “That should last until the next owner.” I’m 51.

Johnson's Paste Wax. Bought 3 cans at yard sales. My table saw will never need that much wax, nor will the one remaining room in our house with wood floors.

Omg core memory unlocked! I totally forgot about that stuff!!

I’m definitely on my last cat. like them, but I’m really sick of kitty litter, hairballs, and random destruction.

Same. I’ve had half a dozen

We adopted kittens last year. Wife and I are 52/55. We’ve had cats our whole lives but these will probably be our last. The last cat we adopted lived 23 years. I don’t want a geriatric cat when I’m 80 because it was rough watching her fade away.
DaniiMinoguh@reddit
Outside of food, everything I've bought recently is for the last time. I want off this fucking thing.
Anvilsmash_01@reddit
We just paid to have the exterior of our house painted. I'm 53, and there is no way I'll be living in this house before it needs to be painted again. Also, new fence being built next week, and that will be the last time I'm paying for one of those.
