What’s your favourite Wayside School story?

Mine is “Calvin’s Big Decision”. I was close to making the same choice, but opted for a tribal instead. In hindsight, I should have picked a potato.

There is no thirteenth floor.

I had no idea what the OP meant until I saw this comment. I guess I didn't care about books enough to know that these were part of a series, but I recognize some of the other stories that others mentioned as well.
shadowlarx@reddit
No, there’s a thirteenth floor.
There is no nineteenth story. There is no Miss Zarves. Sorry.
dreamsinred@reddit
Oh my god! You put the whole 19th chapter here!
shadowlarx@reddit
I know. I don’t know how I remembered all of it after all this time. 😁

I was surprised to learn that some buildings really do opt-out of having a thirteenth floor, which seems to be a rather extreme case triskaidekaphobia.

Mitch Hedburg had a joke about it. "If you stay at a hotel on the 14th floor.... c'mon, you know what floor you're really on. If you jump out the window, you will die SOONER."

the gym teacher that had to run up all the stairs. and there was something about gym balls? i'll have to reread this weekend.

“It was purple. After reading it, Jenny threw up.”
dreamsinred@reddit
Did you ever try reading the story backwards to see what it actually said?
AppropriateDream2903@reddit
Absolutely. It only took me 25 years to realize that was why it was so weird, though. I felt pretty silly when I finally got it while reading it to my stepkids.

The best chapter! Second best is Pet Day in the 3rd book. Very ‘Who’s on First’

The one where the teacher made ice cream flavors for each student that tasted like what they tasted when they weren't tasting anything at all. So i.e., John's ice cream tastes like nothing to him, but everyone else tastes something different.
dreamsinred@reddit
Wasn’t Kathy’s ice cream bitter?
twirlerina024@reddit
I know someone had a flavor that everyone hated, don’t remember names though

The one about the classmate that turned out to just be a bunch of rats in a coat.
Or the poor boy who kept being called a different name all year and had a bit of an existential crisis.
phatryuc@reddit
Sammy!!!
hoopstick@reddit
lol the rats in a coat was the first thing I thought of
phatryuc@reddit
It’s like picking your favorite child.

How there were 2 elevators, one designed to go up and one designed to go down. They both worked just once lol
snow1868@reddit
I just read that chapter to my daughter last night before bed. Classic.
Mitra-The-Man@reddit
This is the one that has stuck with me the most
PicardsButtCheeks@reddit
Oh my fuck I forgot about these. I'm experiencing some deep childhood memories. Thank you.
Calbebes@reddit
Right?! I totally forgot about these books!!!
dreamsinred@reddit
The teacher an ear on the top of her head that could hear people’s thoughts. She was secretly evil, then, she listened to a baby’s thoughts and it made her good.
Rob_LeMatic@reddit
these were so fun
tlonreddit@reddit
Ohhh this is bringing back memories.
SubstantialRemove967@reddit
Mrs. Gorf scared the crap out of 3rd grade me.
Risikio@reddit
The logic book was my favorite.
Illustrious-Lead-960@reddit
The nineteenth story, “Miss Zarves”.
Lord-Sinestro@reddit
There is no Miss Zarves.
There is no nineteenth story.
Sorry.

I am a children’s librarian and have read countless books for kids and this is still the greatest thing I ever read in a children’s book.
Lily_Thief@reddit
Is there one about a bunch of cows going up the stairs of the sideways school? Because that is the one I remember most distinctly, and it would be funny and appropriate if it never happened
teajay1111@reddit (OP)
This comment unlocked my memory of it. The kids got a helicopter ride home, too.
Mitra-The-Man@reddit
“Star bringing prurple?”
teajay1111@reddit (OP)
I was stomped on this one till searching—it’s Wayside School Is Falling Down and the last story in the book of the same name.
G-Lurk_Machete100@reddit
Oh damn. Memory unlock euphoria! These books were awesome!!!
