Peewee’s Big Adventure holds up

Just finished watching with my 10 yr old. He loved it, and when you think about it, it makes sense that he would, given the insanity from Youtube and Roblox that kids latch on to. And I still enjoyed it as well- peak Tim Burton, stupid funny dialogue, and so outrageous that it’s officially timeless, in my opinion. I hadn’t seen it since I was a kid.
newgreyarea@reddit
Tim Burton peaked with his first film? 😂 He was solid thru Mars Attacks. Then absolute garbage from that point on. Hah!
I fully recommend the Pee Wee doc on Max. Was excellent!
Stimpinstein22@reddit
Ya’ll overlooking Big Fish…
guyako@reddit
Yeah, he had a stint where every other movie was good. Big fish was great. I also enjoyed Sweeney Todd, though I know that’s an unpopular opinion.
newgreyarea@reddit
I guess I should watch it again. Just was so not into Burton by the time that came around that I probably didn’t give it a fair shot.
disposable_account01@reddit
Absolute garbage?
Who hurt you?
newgreyarea@reddit
Tim. He hurt me. He was my fave of the bigger directors at the time. Starting with Batman.
ryhoyarbie@reddit
I honestly think Burton’s last good film was Real Big Fish. After that, I think he just doesn’t care anymore.
jacksonmills@reddit
Have you seen Sweeney Todd?
I really enjoyed that one.
newgreyarea@reddit
Isn’t that a band? I would have to watch Big Fish again but recently watched Sleepy Hollow and was meh. Hated Planet of the Apes. Was honestly shocked it was a Tim Burton film. The newer Apes movies have been oddly fun.
Kryptin206@reddit
The band is rEEl big fish
newgreyarea@reddit
Hahaha! But they were ska if I remember correctly and therefore not memorable. 😂
Canadatron@reddit
We were there for the ska/jive/swing revival! NEVER FORGET!
newgreyarea@reddit
Always forget!!!
electraglideinblue@reddit
The movie is just called Big Fish.
CrouchingDomo@reddit
Bite your tongue about Sleepy Hollow, kind sir, for it is goode campy fun and I will not see it besmirched. Do not make me summon my Hessian!
newgreyarea@reddit
😂
ryhoyarbie@reddit
You’re right. Big Fish.
Been a looooong time since I saw that film.
Obelisko78@reddit
Watching that new documentary allowed me to appreciate and understand Pail Reubens, and the conceptual evolution of Pee-Wee as a character, a little better. Only in the America of the 80's was someone like Pee-Wee Herman going to spawn and thrive.
And, sure, the visual style of PW's Big Adventure is unmistakeably Burton, but the doc also mentions that much of the of the humor and dialogue is thanks to Phil Hartman
Stang1776@reddit
His first 4 films were great. After that, not really my cup of tea.
newgreyarea@reddit
Even the second Batman? The best one!! I dunno. Slight disagree. Nightmare Before Christmas feels like a classic by now. 30 years of mall goths can’t be wrong! Hah! Ed Wood? Mars Attack? Ack ack! 😂
Stang1776@reddit
I honestly liked the 1st Batman. Batman Returns was meh.
Nightmare Before Christmas I didnt care for. Just all personal opinions but in conclusion, you are wrong and im right.
Illustrious-Lead-960@reddit
Nothing with Walken has ever been meh. Joe Dirt wasn’t even all the way meh with him in it. He even made Gigli at least 20% less meh!
Though I haven’t seen that infamous “Heaven’s Gate”…
Stang1776@reddit
To be fair, the most i remember about Batman returns was the movie that followed it at the drive in. Yeah I saw it at the drive in with my mom and 2 brothers.
After Batman Returns they played boomerang. We didnt get that far into the movie before my mom said we leaving. Ahh shit. That was funny times.
Almost beat the time my brothers and I were watching Revenge of the Nerds. As my dad was making his way into the garage he of course had to walk through the room during the "hidden" camera scene. He just stopped and said "Where'd you boys get this movie?"
"We picked it out at the library with Mom." He just shook his head and went to garage.
newgreyarea@reddit
Batman Returns was apparently too scary for some kids making it the best Batman. lol. Also, Boomerang? The Eddie Murphy movie with Grace Jones? What a weird ass pairing.
Stang1776@reddit
Yeah right. It was Eddie Murphy and none of us were expecting a close up shot of a woman fondling fruit with her tongue.
pistolero_pres@reddit
Same for me at the drive in, except I had to sit through Lethal Weapon 3 first. So much Joe Pesci.
Illustrious-Lead-960@reddit
Did you get far enough in to hear the greatest enunciation of a word ever? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uQrfheTRezo&t=14s&pp=2AEOkAIB

I mean.. I guess it’s a mesa?
Comprehensive_Two619@reddit
Phil Hartman was a co-writer of the screenplay along with Reubens and Burton. He shows up as one of the reporters at the drive-in at the premiere in the end scene. This movie hits on so many different levels.
Le_Sadie@reddit
In the new documentary, he's shown to have then gone on Howard Stern to say Ruebens basically ripped him off any credit and he's a pervert.
It gave me a read sad. :(

When I was in middle school, one of the few movies we owned on VHS was Pee-Wes’s Big Adventure. I must have watched it at least a couple times a week and could recite the entire movie by memory without missing a beat.
Fast forward to just a couple weeks ago and I was at a conference for work. One evening I was out at a reception and talking to a younger guy (I’m guessing early 30s but maybe even late 20s?) and find out that he’s a DC-native who has been living in San Antonio the past couple of years. To which I of course immediately ask him if he’s been the basement of the Alamo and seen a bicycle down there.
He had no idea what I was talking about and I immediately died a little inside and felt so old. 😔

This is one of a small handful of movies I randomly rewatch every few years. Its just so good.

Hell yeah it does. I would sometimes show this when teaching the Hero’s Journey to high schoolers.

Pee wee as a human holds up. RIP to the legend
Mr-Wigz@reddit
My brother and I use to quote whole segments of this movie to each other.

As a kid I never caught the “big butt” lines with Simone- that was great
hiro111@reddit
The entire basement scene where he's just going on and on with irrelevancies and everyone is getting restless 🤣🤣
Nervous-Durian-7100@reddit
I will never not laugh at Pee Wee snarling at the street thugs and their quick reaction to flee.
SenorNeiltz@reddit
What's this have to do with my missing bike?
I DON'T KNOW!
Also-- when he's all pumped up by the biker gang and revs off for like 5 seconds before eating shit into the sign.
Top-3 movie all-time for me.
UTALR1@reddit
Yes! My favorite part after just rewatching it. The fact that they sell it as near death experience & hospitalized him makes it even better.

Great 90 minute movie

My kids haven't seen any pee wee shows or movies. Should I show them the show first, or a specific movie? I haven't watched any of those since I was a kid so I'd love to revisit with them
Overall_Falcon_8526@reddit
The first movie is great and any kid (or adult) will enjoy it. I would start there, UNLESS your kids are quite a bit younger, in which case the show (on Max) will be a hit.
Overall_Falcon_8526@reddit
1000%. Timeless classic.

Just rewatched. Can confirm.

Large Marge seen while on mushrooms blue screened my brain. Seemed like a good idea at the time. Do not recommend.
spderweb@reddit
I love watching old movies with my kid (he's 8 now). Last one was princess bride. Tonight, might be honey I shrunk the kids!
sky-lake@reddit
I rewatched this last year for the first time since I was a kid and I couldn't believe that I liked it even more! When I was a kid I loved it for the whacky stuff going on, Large Marge scary moment etc. but as an Adult I feel like I could pick up on WAY more jokes that I missed. Also the ending was more poignant to me, I loved how all the characters for the movie show up for the premiere, it was so heart warming.

Man this movie is a trip and a half. Family watched it so many times back in the day. Scared the hell outta me, but still loved it. Peak 80s kid mentality. 🤣 Burton really knew how to scare the living hell outta kids back then. One never forgets Large Marge.
I know Burton has had more misses than hits as he ages, but that seems to be the norm for directors who hit their peak in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Just look at Lucas and Spielberg. I will say, though, that I've liked quite a few of his movies past the turn of the century, except Dumbo. He was the wrong director for that project.
Dazzer1831@reddit
I first watched this on VHS, as a Brit it was my first experience of Pee Wee. My older cousin was visiting us at time and spent the whole movie braying like a donkey with laughter
TacoDestroyer420@reddit
It's one of my favorite movies ever!
Also, the recent HBO documentary Pee-Wee as Himself, on Max, is just tearing me up. It's so good and you should watch it if you love Paul Rubens and Pee-Wee.
Hazel_Rah1@reddit
Exactly. People are like “kids’ shows are so insane now!” And I’m like did you not watch Ren and Stimpy orrrr.

Teletubbies on mute with OK Computer playing as the soundtrack while trippin balls in the dorms in 1999 is next level…

I had randomly bumped into long format music video night on cartoon network and managed to record on VHS most of daft punks interstellar movie, the Gorillaz, that one where the stop motion guys have numbers on their faces. Man I need to go look this up now, I wore that tape out

My four year old is a big fan of "Mr Wee's Great Adventure."
Also, spoiler here: he knew Large Marge was a ghost almost as soon as she appeared on screen.
And another sign my child is raised by Gen X/Millenials- he noticed the dinosaurs from the diner scene are also in the video for Tears for Fears "Everybody Wants to Rule the World."

It's a surprising homage to German Expressionism

I rather thought it was a ubiquitous analysis of the false dichotomy between the Bolshevik Revolution and the rising popularity of internet femboys.

Tim Burton and Paul Reubens collaborated perfectly. Reubens and his writers' concepts combined with Burton's style in editing, photography, and Danny Elfman's music was perfection.
