Not aviation related, but this just surfaced a core memory. My parents in the 90s (and others) would always follow behind large semi-trucks for better MPG. Feels dangerous⌠but did others have this experience? Feels like âfollowing too closeâ and ripe for debris striking the windshield.
I think there was a miniscule increase in fuel efficiency, but you had to be within a few feet of the truck bumper. And truckers don't like you being there.
OOO!! I saw that episode! I remember it did NOT really make a significant difference in gas mileage. I think maybe it only works and HIGH rates of speedâŚlike in NASCAR! Thatâs where the whole idea of drafting originated from right?
So yeah, donât tailgate semis. You ever see tire shrapnel from one of those things go through a windshield? Ouch! đ¤
When it approaches the tanker the bow wave of air it's pushing shoves the tail of the tanker up making it nose down and descend if the tanker pilot doesn't actively pitch up as it gets closer. The C-17 is quite the chonker.
Oh man, my high school was right by where they were testing the KC-46 and I can still hear those engines like it was yesterday! We got to see all the different aircraft they tested refueling with too
Iâm glad someone posted this. I saw the same thing a couple years ago. Never could find out what I saw, thought maybe I hadnât really seen what I thought I did. But this is it. I wasnât crazy or dreamed it after all. Thanks.
Are you in the Midwest? Altus AFB is the FTU (formal training unit - I.e.: main training base for new aircrew) for C-17âs, KC-135âs and -46âs. Youâll see this almost every day over the Midwest
Hi, plane expert here. This isn't cute - planes only do this when in distress. OP should call air traffic control to send a professional to separate and rehome them.
I live on Vanciuver Island about midway. I work at an airport. Part of my job is fueling aircraft. I remember handing the nozzle up to a guy on the wing and way past him at about 10-15 thou I saw 3 large twin engine airliners (all different sizes) in very close formation. And a small dot of a chase plane. We are not far from Seattle so thought it was probably a photo shoot. Fun to see.
