Of the luxury brands, newer BMWs will be the most reliable of those brands. Also consider Lexus, Acura and, yes, Mazda.

I said this to myself in 2008 and got myself a shiny new 335i with the n54 too...in the first 10k miles: both fuel pumps, fuel injectors, water pump, waste gate needed to be replaced on top of that they never were able to figure out how to get it to stop leaking oil. i ended up using the lemon law to get out of it after 1.5 years (prob drove it for 6 months of that time)

They're different now. 2015 328 wagon (ended with an idiot making a left turn on a solid green light), 2017 330 wagon, 2020 X3 and, now, 2025 i4. Zero issues with any of 'em.
Altruistic-Skirt-796@reddit
My point being "newer is more reliable" isn't always true as in 2008 my n54 was new.
hughmungouschungus@reddit
It's 2025 not 2008 that's a 17 year old car
Altruistic-Skirt-796@reddit
It was 2008 when I bought it.
hughmungouschungus@reddit
Yeah we're talking about now
Altruistic-Skirt-796@reddit
You understand how time works right? Like in 17 years now will be 17 years ago
hughmungouschungus@reddit
so what lol what does that have to do with anything. nobody is asking for advice to use 17 years from now
Altruistic-Skirt-796@reddit
I'll break it down Barney style for you. No crayons though.
I'm replying to this statement "Of the luxury brands, newer BMWs will be the most reliable of those brands. Also consider Lexus, Acura and, yes, Mazda, which you can go new for that budget."
By relaying my anecdote from when toi followed the same advice in 2008 (when cars manufactured in 2008 were built, making them new AT THE TIME. Just like cars built today are new AT THE TIME) im saying that new does not mean reliable with the luxury brands
hughmungouschungus@reddit
Oh my god you have brain damage. They are just talking about RIGHT NOW. op is not asking for some universal law that's applicable for the next 50 years bro
Altruistic-Skirt-796@reddit
There's absolutely nothing about the statement that suggest he isn't. Literally just says "new cars are reliable" You don't know if a new car is reliable or not because it hasn't had time to prove it's reliability. It's a stupid statement no matter which you you cut it.
Claiming someone else has brain damage when you yourself struggle to understand how the passage of time works is rich, though.
hughmungouschungus@reddit
Idk how you even exist bro lol

The B48/B58 changed the game for BMW and they're now one of the top rated brands for reliability from both CR and JD Power. I suspect the partnership with Toyota had something to do with it but, regardless, 2015 was a turning point for them.
Altruistic-Skirt-796@reddit
Yes, while true for 2015 and now doesn't mean it will be true forever. I'm just saying "new is more reliable" isn't as solid of a statement as it sounds. New is not always more reliable, my example being the one new car I ever bought being a huge POS.
ImpliedSlashS@reddit
Everything changes. GM, Toyota and Honda used to make bulletproof engines but the former is considered garbage now and the latter two have hundreds of thousands of recalls each.
Altruistic-Skirt-796@reddit
That's exactly what I'm saying. Everything changes. "New car is reliable" suggests things don't change. New cars will always be reliable. Issue is all old cars (even the unreliable ones) were new the year they came out.

What are your needs, and what are you looking at?
Make sure your model has independent suspensions and avoid CVTs
I personally dont want cars with smart alternators or with a or at least get the trim leve that doesnt have any of this nonsense.
Thars just me, I have realized cars these days are packed with features that buyers are not aware of, but seller are getting kickbacks for.
leftfootbraker@reddit
Avoid CVTs is so outdated. The Subaru CVT is bullet proof, holds down torque super well, and is buttery smooth. Most reliable power train (when left stock) you'll ever buy for $40k or less off the factory line.
Novel_Alternative_40@reddit
I don’t believe that for a moment.
NoValidUsernames666@reddit
cvts wear faster than autos but its nowhere near as bad now as it was with nissans shitty ass cvt that everyone knows about. after like 2019 don't know the exact year, cvts have become much more robust and reliable.
all that said I'd never own a car with a cvt bc i hate the way they drive.
Novel_Alternative_40@reddit
No CVT is faster than a PDK, DSG, or ZF8, sorry.
You won’t feel them shift, but they def aren’t faster. No one will ever convince me that it is a good or superior technology
NoValidUsernames666@reddit
I never said any cvt is faster I said they wear faster.. like they go bad faster than an auto or manual
leftfootbraker@reddit
Lol ya, CVTs suck ass compared to manuals, personally still hate the CVT, but....No one can deny how far they've come since those Nissan piles of trash.
Hot take: but the 22+ cvt from subaru will go down in hindsight as the first great CVT. It's just built tip to top stronger, and they changed the maintenance cycle advice to every 30k instead of "forever".

I’d go Audi over BMW on design alone. BMW has so lost its way. New Audi is headed the same direction so look used. I’d stay away from modern Benz due to quality and design as well, but to each their own.
Pick up a used S3, or if you want more practicality with the same power/drivetrain, Golf R. I know you said sedan but it’s still seats adults comfortably and punches way above its class with less insurance and maintenance costs. I had a 2018 S4 that was also a nice car but not the right fit for me in the twisty turny mountain roads.
V60 Volvo is nice looking but no idea how they drive. There are options from Lexus, Genesis and Hyundai but not sure those are great. For my money the Germans make the best AWD systems outside of Subaru, but Subaru interior quality and UX leaves so much to be desired.

I keep reading the new TLX has braking issues and Acura has turned their backs on it and the owners. I stayed away from them when car shopping this past year. They were at the top of my list too. Great looking car! Ended up with Audi 2023 A5 sportback. I’ve been told by many stick to the services and shouldn’t have problems and the older ones were the bad ones with major electronics problems and suspension issues.

You need to start with your use case... What do you value most... Storage, ground clearance, mpg, etc. how long will you keep it .. and also define "how used"... You can get a ten year old $150k sticker sedan for 40k that will be a hell of a fast machine but will also cost a lot in repairs.
I'd buy a brand new caddy ct4 AWD for 40k... Just my two cents.

I quite liked my old Ford Fusion, though I hear the DCT was no good and I'm not aware of which trims are AWD. Maybe a WRX?

I found a 2023 TLX SH-AWD for $39,998 in town. I'd be going to look at that.

An AWD TLX.
