Prices of runners

Seriously am I officially old? Why are they starting at 100 for a 'good comfy pair these days? Am I just cheap being raised by a boomer father that had to pry his wallet open with a crowbar? The last good pair I bought on clearance for 40 bucks 4 years ago and they have lasted up until now. I'm usually so good at finding deals, not this time.... 90 tax inc. It hurt!!
Triscuitmeniscus@reddit
lol I’ve been paying over $100 for my running shoes since 2006.

Inflation is nothing new. The price of a candy bar while I was a cashier at my dad’s gas station in the late 90s went from 49 to 69 cents in the four years I worked there in high school.
I spend around $150 on new running shoes but I actually use them to run and a cheap pair could leave me nursing a preventable injury.
theotterway@reddit
If it's between you and the ground, mattress, shoes, car tires, you should make sure you have the best you can afford.
Character_Bend_5824@reddit
Mine were $120 prior to recent years' inflation. I'm afraid to even look at what they will cost after tariffs.
Beaverhuntr@reddit
No you're not old just cheap. You cant even find a decent "cool " pair of shoes for 40 bucks at Ross!
PersianCatLover419@reddit
$100 is cheap and average for running shoes. I have ran since I was 15 or 16.
I buy them at Joe's new balance but I wait for sales and coupon codes.

Inflation

Nah the prices are largely still the same. I used to sell sporting goods back from 1999- early 00’s and the upper tier models (ASICS Gel Kayanos, Brooks Beasts, Mizuno Wave Creation etc) were all retailing for $230-240ish. Clearance and low end models would generally be around $79-99 but they weren’t really good options for anyone wanting to do proper running or the like in. It was generally around the $150 mark before that was a recommendation.
Admirable-Sir9716@reddit
Yeah, this is what I remember things costing when I ran alot. Then factor in wearing out 3 pairs per year with the mileage and it adds up. Still significantly cheaper than cycling though...
delibertine@reddit
I tried cheap ones. Never, ever again. That's asking to be wrecked with longterm injuries. I switched to Hokas and Brooks and I'll never cheap out again
Oh, and Mizuno's are cool too
Yoda-202@reddit
The Hoka's I invested in for the first time a few months ago were life changing.
Yoda-202@reddit
I went from my tried & true $65 New Balances to the Hoka Bondi 9 for $150 a few months ago and let me tell you- it was worth every damn penny. And I'm the king of cheapskates. Walking 3 miles a day now and down 80 pounds since starting zepbound in December. The Hoka's ended my low back pain and plantar fascitis. Some things you just can't cheap out on.
Late_Being_7730@reddit
I worked in healthcare on my feet for 12+ hours. I don’t cheap out on shoes
NotRadTrad05@reddit
Shoes, tires, and mattress; pay good for the things between you and the ground.
dance-9880@reddit
Athletic shoes are getting to c. AUD 300 for the premium models full price. It's a joke.
Chemical-Dog6364@reddit
100.00 isn't a lot for a decent pair of shoes. Don't skimp on your feet, the rest of your body will thank you.
Pinkkorn69@reddit
Find a small local run shoe store and stalk their clearance racks but I don't deviate from Brooks Adrenaline GTS so I pay whatever I need to. 140ish is rhe most but clearance online for 60 on occasion
don51181@reddit
As an average runner the cheapest I'll go is some ASICS around $70 on sale. Anything cheaper and usually I'm going to suffer some way. ( Like causing a sore)
I also get wider shoes now and that helps as well but that means I don't buy the cheapest stuff. It's worth it to pay more.
parachute--account@reddit
Yeah you should replace them more often. But the prices have shot up an extra notch this year, I just paid 180 each for 2 pairs. Seems quite steep.
heresmytwopence@reddit
I’m would give anything to find a $100-ish pair of running shoes my feet can tolerate. Shoes that are suitable marathon or half-marathon length runs are upwards of $300 and I try to keep shoes for 5/10K runs below $200.
LeafyCandy@reddit
They're so expensive and they're so inferior. I can't find any that aren't gel "walk on the clouds" crap that feel like they're 16 years old when I put them on brand new out of the box.
stealthylizard@reddit
For just wearing around, I buy mine at Walmart. I have wide feet and I know they’ll fit even after I leave the store.
swosei12@reddit
If you like New Balance, Joe’s New Balance Outlet (an online store) usually has great deals. I usually buy from Joe’s 1. Bc of the deals and 2. They often carry wider shoes. My right foot has a weird bone structure so I need shoes with a wide toe box, and a lot of stores don’t carry wider shoes.
Burnet05@reddit
You can buy last years models at a discount.

My parents would like to have words with you, from 1990.
therealpopkiller@reddit
Anything that was $80 five years ago is $100 now. We’re being priced out of the lifestyles we already had
psilosophist@reddit
If you wear New Balance and don’t care about wearing last years stuff, this site is where NB offloads their overstock.

ryhoyarbie@reddit
I pay about 150 bucks for my running shoes. Brooks is the way to go for running shoes.
RustbeltRoots@reddit
Running is cost effective and a great recreation, even if you spend $150 on shoes. Decent shoes should last at least 300 miles (maybe 600 miles). That’s 50 cents per mile.
YogurtclosetDull2380@reddit
I don't run but I wear Nike Free rn and they're like 65 bucks. I love em
no_clever_name_yet@reddit
Every pair of shoes I own has cost me mega-bucks. Fancy feet equals big money.
jambr380@reddit
Hit up your local outlets. I run long distance and go through several pairs of shoes per year. A lot of times I get $150 shoes for $40-50.
Don't buy a brand's cheapest running shoes. Getting good deals on good quality shoes makes a difference
No_Proposal7812@reddit
At our age we should be spending money on good shoes. I can't wear cheap shoes anymore, they make my feet hurt, my back hurt. Good shoes are worth it
DumpsterDepends@reddit
Brooks $160
hammyburgler@reddit
I feel like 100 bucks is actually good for a decent pair. I think I just paid almost 200. Everything is way too expensive.
gnrlgumby@reddit
My entire wardrobe is expensive, supportive shoes and sneakers, and everything else is from Costco.
MotherofaPickle@reddit
Your runners lasted four years? Dang. My husband has to buy a new pair every six months because he wears the soles down.
Jupiter68128@reddit
Are you kidding me? Good shoes were $80 thirty years ago.
Spartan04@reddit
Good running shoes have been pretty close to 100 since I started running 15 years ago. You could sometimes find clearance deals but if buying at regular price around 100 was expected.
There were cheaper shoes geared more for everyday wear though, most companies that make running shoes have lower tiered product lines for places like department stores.
someguyfromsk@reddit
I've been paying \~$150+ for regular old shoes for a long long time. I want shoes that are comfortable and will last.
Eaglepursuit@reddit
Inflation, man.
I only buy shoes on sale. If I'm lucky, it's only $60 or $70
Santa_Hates_You@reddit
Literally everything is more expensive now.
