Getting Ready for Bed
Posted by Libster1986@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 184 comments
Maybe I’m looking at the past with rose-colored glasses, but I seem to remember a time in my 20s when getting ready for bed was a simple, straightforward and quick process- brush teeth, pee, strip off clothes, crawl under covers.
Now it seems like the process for finally getting to bed is a multi-tasked, drawn out process-brush, floss, pee, remember to take whatever pills and supplements you have to, oops there’s that one last chore you forgot, gotta fill the CPAP humidifier, crap forgot my mouth guard in the bathroom gotta get up again (should I pee again?) and so on and so on.
I just want to be able to decide to go to bed and just do it without so much effort!
CrabbyOldster78@reddit
I also remember SLEEPING through the night. I miss those days desperately 😢
FeralBanshee@reddit
Perimenopause issues? HRT would help, if you can do it. I wish i could. Otherwise try taking magnesium glycinate - game changer.
Opposite-Shower1190@reddit
Now I wake up freezing cold because I’m covered in my own sweat 😓
Mellymel75@reddit
Covered in sweat, have to pee again, oops moved too fast, leg cramps. When does it end🙄🙄🙄
jenorama_CA@reddit
When that started happening to me, I got a bed cooling/heating system from Sleep.me. Best decision ever. I also started taking magnesium and my sleep is restored.
Tndnr82@reddit
I get up, strip down, lay a towel down, flip my pillows and go back to sleep. This is a few days a week. Has been happening to me for a long time now, but I had a cervical spinal cord injury in my late 20's which contributes to this issue. Yes, I have to was my bed clothes more often than average.
Opposite-Shower1190@reddit
Thank you.
Badrear@reddit
Bamboo sheets can help with night sweats. They probably won’t win against hot flashes if those are the issue though.
CrabbyOldster78@reddit
I’m not that bad yet but I do feel hot every night. I think I’m too dehydrated to sweat too much. Ugh.
SauerMetal@reddit
I just started taking Flomax for this very reason
ebyrnes@reddit
Have you tried an eye mask? My eyes do not close all the way (long story) and when I wear an eye mask, it is lights out…I sleep deep abd wake up rested. Worth a try!
Melodic_War327@reddit
Is there an eye mask you can wear that doesn't get all caught up in your CPAP mask? Not asking for a friend.
Tndnr82@reddit
I pull the blanket up over my head. Does this count?
Babyruthless13@reddit
Yaass! I just started using a cold pack eye mask and the combo of dark and cold helps conk me out immediately.
siliconsmiley@reddit
I use an eye mask with Bluetooth speakers to listen to audio books. It helps with the tinnitus.
ScheanaShaylover@reddit
Love a mask, black out curtains and an edible!!!!
CrabbyOldster78@reddit
I use one every night. It does help!
Libster1986@reddit (OP)
And wake up feeling rested and energized!
profcate@reddit
I really miss that part.
Godskin_Duo@reddit
Wait, people can do this? I'm usually awakened 1-3 times a night by allergies, the need to pee, a random leg itch, or cat scratching on something.
AffectionateSun5776@reddit
After the night is over.
Mister_Wednesday_@reddit
Its summer-ish now so as long as you consider sun coming up or at least fairly bright out, then you are sleeping until after the night is over (for the next couple months at least).
jondes99@reddit
And the more beer you had, the better you slept.
roadbikemadman@reddit
I'm vacationing in RMNP and used this to get up and go do some astrophotography then go back to bed for "second sleep". Was interesting.
roadbikemadman@reddit
* 2 am and I feel fine.
roadbikemadman@reddit
Rab1dus@reddit
How old are we talking? I'm 50 and don't relate to any of these old people posts. I can go to bed having to piss and sleep 8 hours. Does this hit at 55? 60? You guys are scaring me!
Careerfade@reddit
I am a decade older. It doesn’t happen to all of us. Don’t worry!
2_Bagel_Dog@reddit
Sleep? More like what uncomfortable memory from 14 years ago would you like to surface and lie awake to perseverate about?
gobbledegook-@reddit
Being able to fall asleep and stay asleep. Those were the days.
newwriter365@reddit
Costco sleep aid (generic Unisom) has changed my life.
Just don’t use it daily, there’s a link to dementia.
two_awesome_dogs@reddit
If you’re a woman, start taking magnesium glycinate and progesterone. I take 420 mg of magnesium glycinate in capsules and 200 mg of progesterone. It took a couple months but I was sleeping better now. I used to only sleep for or five hours and now I’m sleeping a solid six.
WaterwingsDavid@reddit
Same!
big-shirtless-ron@reddit
Best sleep I ever had was the summer between grade 9 and 10. I'd stay up and watch repeats of Night Court until 1230 and then turn off the TV (no remote, of course) and go to bed. Sleep seemed to only last a single second as the next thing I remember is waking up in the morning. I was so refreshed I bounded out of bed, ready to take on my summer holiday.
stephaniestar11@reddit
Oh my💯!!!
JCCZ75@reddit
I remember a couple years ago my dad was watching my 6’3” son sleeping on the loveseat all jacked up, knocked out. He said “I would give anything to sleep like that again.” I’m not quite there yet but when he mentions shit like this I pay attention to what is coming up.
cme74@reddit
Right? Sigh...
Quirky_Commission_56@reddit
I brush my teeth, pee, strip down, get into bed and lie awake for a few hours waiting to fall asleep. Mostly because my partner is snoring directly in my ear within minutes of getting into bed. And I take my supplements in the morning, otherwise I end up having to get up and pee a minimum of three times during the night.
StarDewbie@reddit
Get some earplugs! And your partner some mouth tape. Works for me (mostly.)
Quirky_Commission_56@reddit
Ear plugs don’t work because I wiggle my ears in my sleep and they pop right out.
GMP_ArchViz@reddit
58m here, and I can relate. Part of this conundrum is being an adult with responsibilities, and part of it is that from an evolutionary standpoint, we were supposed to die by 40 after we procreated. Ironically, modern medicine has both extended our lives, and created more medical problems. Yet, being alive and kicking is much better than the alternative. I just lost my dad 2 weeks ago at 81, and I’ll take 3am bathroom breaks as long as I can.
dutchzookangaroo@reddit
I'm so sorry. I hope you are taking care of yourself and your loved ones. Hang in there.
GMP_ArchViz@reddit
Thank you. We had the service on Saturday. I put together a 20-minute slideshow video with about 400 photos and 7 different songs. Looking back at that whole history made me see just how much he was loved, outside of my understanding as a kid growing up. I didn’t realize it to that extent until I made that video. He was a good dad, and he was loved for decades by many. I used Warren Zevon’s “Keep Me In Your Heart” for the last song, and it was tough going hearing it back with family. Life is good, and I’m lucky to have had him for so long.
Truth is, as soon as he passed, I thought of dozens of questions and situations I wanted to ask him about. Stupid bad timing. I have 2 adult kids of my own, and I can only hope they ask me their questions before my time comes.
dutchzookangaroo@reddit
That sounds really beautiful.
FarMagician8042@reddit
My daughters gave me a book last Father's Day called something like, "Tell Me Your Story." It was a lot of questions about my life and growing up. I really enjoyed writing it out and I know they loved reading it
generalmailbox@reddit
My wife gave one of those books to her mom who probably never even opened it. Unfortunately, she's gone now. She had it for years before she passed.
lectroid@reddit
Mom is 83. The last 10 years have been a slow decent into dementia. Now she’s in memory care. Last time I saw her, she knew I was related to her, but could not remember my name or that I was her son.
I will happily take early checkout if it means avoiding that hellscape.

Reader288@reddit
I’m deeply sorry for your loss.
Agitated_Present7020@reddit
My routine is the same every night. Brush teeth, put dog in his crate, strip off clothes, get in bed, cats join me and I sleep like the dead. Been this way my whole adult life.
TRDbro16@reddit
lol I come up hours early just to prep the cpap so I don’t have to do it later. I empty it every morning so I have to clean the mask and refill every night. Like you the drawn out routine has gotten old. So I do it early. Helps a little.
FKpasswords@reddit
Without Xanax, I would never sleep…
StarDewbie@reddit
Same. It's not good for us though, but honestly, I can't fall asleep for the better part of 2 hours most nights! It suuuuuuuuuuuuucks. I don't know what else to do about it. Some have said take an edible, but I'd have no idea where to begin with that.
FKpasswords@reddit
Meh, no sleep even worse….plus it helps me deal with all the dumbSss of the world. Brings me down to their level…
StarDewbie@reddit
Agree, but my routine is my skin care. I think I'm gonna do it when I get out of the shower a few hours earlier, then I'll just be brushing my teeth and jump into bed!
Old_Goat_Ninja@reddit
I guess I’m lucky. It’s still pretty straightforward for me. I’ll brush my teeth before plopping on the couch. I’ll fart around watching TV or playing on my phone until my eyes start to roll, then I get up, pee, and go to bed. I’m out within a minute or two of my head hitting the pillow.
WeathermanOnTheTown@reddit
I put on pajamas and turn out the light: asleep in seconds. This doesn't have to be complicated.
Bacteriobabe@reddit
I wish I could just lay down & fall asleep instead of having a million different things running through my mind!
RoguePlanet2@reddit
Right?! The world is FULL of problems to be solved dammit!!
Plus, I have to obsess over all the events of the day, and what I didn't do, and what I need to remember for tomorrow, and rehearse some potential arguments, and worry about people......
Bacteriobabe@reddit
Not to mention remembering the most cringiest moments of my life flashing up from nowhere!

I have also had this thought. Why can't I just drop in the bed anymore? Too many rituals is what I say!
ONROSREPUS@reddit
You sure you are a GenXer? this sounds like what my mother does. lol.
My go to bed routine. Walk up stairs, brush while peeing, strip, jump in bed and sleeping in 5-10 minutes.
TemperatePirate@reddit
Well, isn't that special.
Libster1986@reddit (OP)
Based on the rest of the responses here, you're the odd one.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
Yea. I have seen that a lot on GenX sub. I am the in the age group but don't feel it or act it based on a lot of the posts.
Overall-Put9016@reddit
Sigh. The urge to pee, and it's two drops
Jonseroo@reddit
Sometimes I'll have several trips and only do a teaspoon of pee each time and I always think, this is why I have to do so much washing up.
Just kidding. I don't relate to this post at all. I'm only 54, My bedtime routine is like OP's in their 20s.
Baxtir@reddit
HATE THAT SO MUCH!
Bug_Calm@reddit
Decide to go to bed Go up the stairs, sometimes on hands and knees if it was a bad knee day. Pee Hot bath Pee again Crawl into bed Find something mindless on TV to play low in background Sit upright for another hour or so to avoid reflux Lay head down and sleep After two hours or so, pee again.
Repeat last two steps until morning.
mammothhockey@reddit
Trazadone. You're welcome.
sffood@reddit
I live and die by that to fall asleep.
However, it doesn’t always keep me asleep. With a Gabapentin, it seems to help — but not guaranteed.
I’d just like to stay asleep.
Jazzlike_Duck678@reddit
That’s why I like falling asleep on the couch sometimes. I get a little nap before I have to do the bedtime chores.
Sufficient-Pin-481@reddit
Have to make sure the pillows are supporting the right places. I’m currently placing one under each upper arm/elbow so my arms won’t go numb.
ShadeTree7944@reddit
I can’t relate. Yet. I’ve always been a good sleeper and don’t wake up much. I’m up by 0430 for work by 06.
Libster1986@reddit (OP)
People seem to have made this about sleeping. I sleep fine for the most part. It's the getting there part that's annoying.
HoopoeBirdie@reddit
It’s so funny that you posted this because last night I was thinking the worst part of my daily routine is getting ready for bed. 😆
MyriVerse2@reddit
I just brush and fall into bed. No pills or sleep aids.
Some nights I fall asleep before doing either.
frozen_charlotte@reddit
Getting ready for bed is exhausting!
Electrical_Beyond998@reddit
The last part, “should I pee again?”…The answer is yes you should.
madmelly@reddit
I try to fight it for like 5 minutes and then I give in. Doesn’t really matter though because I’ll need to pee again at 2am. And possibly 4am.
GenXer19_7T@reddit
The 4am one, when it happens, makes me anxious because the odds are only 50-50 that I’ll be able to fall back asleep.
-Chemist-@reddit
Man, I'm so tired of this bullshit. I'd give anything to be able to sleep through the night. :-(
katiekat214@reddit
And then be thirsty, get a drink knowing I’ll wake up in two hours needing to pee again.
Libster1986@reddit (OP)
I feel this.
Alltheprettydresses@reddit
I found myself fighting the urge to pee at around 3 am. I knew I'd pee the bed if I had a dream. I fought until about 4, and I got up.
AdhesiveSeaMonkey@reddit
Are you me??
Awkward-Hedgehog-687@reddit
It’s always yes..
foresthobbit13@reddit
Take meds at 9, sit outside vaping and listening to music until 10, come in to brush teeth, get small snack, go upstairs and pee, undress, get in bed and watch a show on tablet until 11-12, take sleep meds, watch another episode, attempt sleep around 1am.
KuhlCaliDuck@reddit
I have ADHD so I just don't stress if I forgot something because it's part of life.
elizajaneredux@reddit
I can see this creeping up. But sometimes I brush my teeth and wash my face (nothing else beyond cleanser and water) after dinner and then it’s just pee and jump in bed when it’s time. Still awake at 4:00-5:00 every fucking morning though.
Ceti-@reddit
Yep. Wide awake around 4-5 every day. No clue why.
KuhlCaliDuck@reddit
I wake up at 5am because of work, but I'm definitely not wide awake.
elizajaneredux@reddit
It really kills the soul, huh? I had normal insomnia most of my life but suddenly can fall asleep without any problem. But the early wakening is even worse
Ceti-@reddit
It sure does! I can also fall asleep in 5-10 min but I wake up between 3-5am every night. It’s exhausting. Nothing I do seem to help it.
buhnyfoofoo@reddit
Every night, I forget my damn mouth guard in the bathroom and have to get out of bed. Why can't I ever remember?!
Juicy-Lemon@reddit
Don’t forget that one day a week when you have to refill the weekly pill organizer!
ThinkLikeAMim@reddit
It really is such a hassle lol. I’m not sure it’s about age though to be honest. My hubby jumps up, fills his water bottle, pees, brushes teeth and goes to bed. He’s asleep in 10 minutes. Me? I get up from the recliner, pee, prepare the bed, lay out clothes for the next day, fill my water bottle, let the dogs out, shower/bath, face routine, brush teeth, put on PJ’s, let the dogs back in, check all the doors, turn off lights, adjust the thermostat, take my handful of meds, put on my hair band and eye mask, pee again, put on my earbuds and turn on my white noise, put my mouth guard in and pull my mask down and proceed to lay in bed for upwards of 2 hours before finally falling asleep. Bedtime shouldn’t be exhausting, BUT, here we are lol.
Juicy-Lemon@reddit
Wait, why isn’t your husband letting the dogs in/out, checking the doors, adjusting the thermostat?
Standard_Bee3296@reddit
And if you are female let’s not forget our nighttime skincare regime.
AmeriBrit1972@reddit
OMG are you me??? You described my routine down to a T
DIYnivor@reddit
I'm still about that simple bedtime routine. No prescription meds, no CPAP, no mouth guard, and chores can wait. I don't sleep as soundly as I used to. I usually wake up once in the middle of the night to pee, which didn't happen when I was younger, and if I'm not careful I'll have a difficult time falling back asleep. I put an adjustable night light in the bathroom, and have it as dim as possible while still allowing me to navigate without stubbing a toe. I makes sure not to look at my phone. If I start thinking about anything then forget about getting back to sleep.
BlueDutchess@reddit
For us ladies, let's not forget waking up soaked from night sweats and menopause.
USAF_Retired2017@reddit
I miss sleeping until 12 and waking up refreshed. Now I can’t sleep until 9 without my back and shoulders aching.

OnPaperImLazy@reddit
use potty incl. bidet for extra freshness
change into PJs incl. clean underwear
get bed ready with 8-pillow setup
wash face
put on trentinoin and moisturizer
brush teeth
wash feet so they are clean in bed
take a variety of pills
get cold water bottle for bedside
turn on automatic mattress cooler
turn down thermostat by several degrees
let dogs in and out
check all lights and doors and teenagers
get in bed THEN:
put on lip mask
moisturize hands
read book until sleepy
put in ear plugs
turn on white noise machine
put on face mask
lay in bed 2 hours trying to sleep
zamslam@reddit
What’s the cold water bottle for? If you wake up thirsty?
OnPaperImLazy@reddit
Yes! Middle of the night cold water is the best water you'll drink all day (or night).
DavePHofJax@reddit
That's quite the regimen to go through. Only question is this: You put in ear plugs but then turn on a white noise machine. Doesn't the ear plugs cancel that out?
OnPaperImLazy@reddit
Oh baby I can hear the white noise machine through the ear plugs. Both together help drown out my husband's power tool style snoring.

rawesome99@reddit
Did you not expect anything in your life to ever change? You sound miserable.
RoguePlanet2@reddit
Our sleep would be better with a CPAP most likely- sometimes I feel like my throat is closing up at night. But I can't stand the thought of dealing with a freakin' bedside machine. And how to travel? Already getting my teeth replaced about one every six months these past couple of years, why bother with a mouth guard? My destiny is plastic implants at this rate 😬
Really is a lot to keep up with, forgot one of my meds the other night, and was so mad I had to get up and deal with it.
XxThrowaway987xX@reddit
I’m a CPAP user, and I don’t find the bedside machine difficult at all. What does annoy me is all the reminders to order my supplies. I feel like getting old has me having to keep track of so many necessities.
azchocolatelover@reddit
I often wake up at the end of a sleep cycle, and waking up while having a hot flash, especially in the summertime, is always fun. And I sometimes change positions so often my Fitbit registers steps and thinks I'm walking.
Klutzy-Dog4177@reddit
Yes! My husband and I always joke about bedtime gear! He needs CPAP and wrist brace. I need my mouth guard, hair bonnet, and sleep headphones set for tinnitus therapy. Don't forget sexy time of rubbing each other down with muscle cream. And yes, you should definitely pee again!
katiekat214@reddit
Tinnitus therapy??
Klutzy-Dog4177@reddit
I found it on YouTube music but I'm sure Spotify has some as well. If you have tinnitus you should listen to several of them until you find your tone. There is everything from white noise to chittering sounds with bells. You should find one that sort of matches the tone of your tinnitus. You will know when you do because it's like feeling your face, eyes, and even brain relax. For me it was an absolute game changer for restful sleep. I listen on repeat at low volume. The one I use is called "Most powerful tinnitus sound therapy ever" by Paul Harrison Mcr

Libster1986@reddit (OP)
I can say on the positive side that finally being able to use a CPAP effectively has made a massive difference in this respect. I get up to pee far less frequently now. I can even sleep close to 4 hours at a time before needing to hit the head. I still don’t wake up feeling rested, but I’ll take this small victory of staying asleep longer!

Putting the cat in the laundry room In case she decides to yell all night, find the remote to turn off the tv.
thatgrrlmarie@reddit
yes, you should always pee again!
Lady_Blood_Raven@reddit
For me it’s all that plus a multi step facial skincare routine:
Pre shower: remove makeup
In shower: mild cleanser and three times a week am exfoliating scrub
After shower: toner, emulsion, prescription retinoid (same three nights as exfoliating), snail serum, snail moisturizer, eye cream.
Then there’s the body moisturizer…
Then place out clothes for the next day…
Make breakfast and lunch to take to work…
Queue up the coffee pot
