Why am I losing my passion for cars?
Posted by Negative-Primary696@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 125 comments
I have no clue why but I’ve started not being as interested in cars recently. It was a pretty sudden change. Could it be because I’m getting bored? I’ve been going to big car meet ups a lot recently and there’s more Ferraris, Porsches and Aston martins then I can count. I only get some kind of excitement from hypercars but even then I’m not as thrilled as before. Could it be just because I’m growing up? Someone help haha
Simple-Aspect-649@reddit
The scene and culture has changed.
It is not what it used to be. I feel the same way as well.
bigblackglock17@reddit
Modern cars just suck. Could that be why? At least average people vehicles.
Diligent-Practice-25@reddit
When one considers that the Big Three barely even build cars anymore (in favor of trucks, SUV's and crossovers), American cars have become boring appliances.
Lower_Put4270@reddit
….said every car guy since probably about 1920 when car guys were invented. 🙄
bigblackglock17@reddit
Very true. But I’d say we peaked around 2010. Now modern vehicles are just literally garbage. wtf is wrong with this interior? No buttons and a massive screen. Can’t get power seats unless you get a trim with a sun roof and then you lose a ton of headroom.
Automakers making it more and more difficult to repair vehicles when your scanner can’t even understand the codes.
So, so much plastic shit that shouldn’t be. Like all those 1.x liter GM engines have plastic valve covers and their 5.3s have plastic oil pans. Transmissions going out at 30, 50, 70, 100, 150, 170k miles.
All the suvs look “similar” these days. There is a chart somewhere, where they’re all the same color and a side view. I couldn’t identify a single one from the side.
hochoa94@reddit
If it doesn’t have a crank to start the car are you really a car guy? /s
JCDU@reddit
You're being downvoted for speaking God's honest truth - people have been saying modern cars suck since the first car replaced a horse, I've seen newspaper articles and posters in museums dating back to the early days saying cars frighten horses, they smell bad, they're noisy, you have to keep stopping for this "gas" stuff rather than just feeding it some hay, etc. etc. etc.
Diligent-Practice-25@reddit
When I lived in Germany, I had a definite passion for cars because you could drive them as they are meant to be driven, both in terms of speed limits and rules of the road. Accordingly, I bought a Porsche 911. Here in the USA, restrictive speed limits and lousy drivers who unaware of the rules of the road make driving a hot car pointless.
boludo1@reddit
Go back to the basics. Drive a Miata

Yes this. OP sounds like he’s just a spectator. Gotta actually get in the game lol

At a dealership or on FBM or somewhere else you can purchase a car.

Maybe because cars are just a thing that people throw money at, then they all hang around comparing how much money they just spent.
There is no deep meaning to cars. They are just things.
Welcome to your adult years.
MCMLIXXIX@reddit
Supercars and the likes aren't exciting anymore, their bits of unobtainium with wheels and leather seats.
I saw a mint (could have rolled out the showroom yesterday sort of condition) mk1 fiesta outside b&q last week and it had people stopping and taking pictures.
Maybe have a look around and see if something else interests you. I can recommend a couple of track days in a rented gt3rs, guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
SolSabazios@reddit
Cars were always lame to me. I hate the maintenance cost of owning them as well, but besides the utility they represent, I just don't care. Most look ugly. Only some off road or old muscle cars really look cool. I can get how someone would like the mechanics of how engines work but beyond that, guns are way cooler and cheaper.
TPSreportmkay@reddit
I've gotten to a point where meets are boring and I really don't care about my friend's new wheels and coilovers "builds" beyond the fact I'm happy for them getting enjoyment out of life.
Basically the only things of interest to me are working on my cars, driving my car on track, or watching local racing events.
Guilty-Report-3971@reddit
When you are priced out, this is what happens. Same too with crappy cars. The insurance price increase, the extra fines and charges, then increased cost of fixing and longevity issues all add up in our mind and create a burden. The exotic cars are on the extreme end of a spectrum of cost to repair and maintain. In essence, you see car ownership as become a niche, and further still not worth your time?
FriendlyBologna417@reddit
I don't know about ch'all, but I get more excited nowadays when I find a mostly complete 2004 Hyundai Tiburon at an auto salvage than I do at any car show. I get to sit in it. Grip the steering wheel, just like I used to as a college kid. Then there's the Chevy Cavalier a few rows down, the rock-hard clamshell seats perfectly in-tact. I stare at the plain paper gauge cluster and smile sometimes.
Klutzy_Concept_1324@reddit
You could fancy yourself on trucks, trucks and other SUV like vehicles are interesting because you have a totally different tire selection. I became absolutely obsessed with tires. Afterall that's what keeps your car/vehicle on the road anyway. I could care less about Hypercars, but I do appreciate classics and simplicity
highlandcoofarmer@reddit
Maybe its going to meets and seeing cars you will never be able to afford yourself which is kinda depressing.
I get more excited out of a clean older car still on the road than a lambo these days.
ElCaminoDelSud@reddit
Probably this. He’s only focusing on the hyper exotics that nobody can get. There’s a driving factor in seeing a built m340i or s5 that’s really attainable
okayuhhhhh@reddit
Yeah they are cool cars but I don’t think mass produced bmw n Audis that you see 10x in a 5 minutes drive are going to re spark his interest.
hochoa94@reddit
When you see that Honda civic pushing 400 hp or a Lexus from the 2000s with a 2JZ motor that can keep up with a Porsche is when I’m extremely interested and excited. A Ferrari is nice sure but I think you’re right an attainable car that is built with love is something that a hypercar can’t compare with
JIsADev@reddit
Probably it. When I was younger I was excited to see the custom and exotic cars at auto shows. Now I just want to see the latest family vehicles from Hyundai, Toyota, etc 😅
CromulentPoint@reddit
For sure. Supercars are great and all, but something that’s been loved on over time is just more interesting, and just about any flavor of hot rodding (Model A’s to lowriders or muscle cars or whatever) just adds to the fun.
cookie-ninja@reddit
Well I think it has more character and history than the off the lot supercars.
Also, when you're outside the track, it's more fun to drive a slow car fast. On the track, totally different story, your power and handling actually matters.
Unhappy-Quit6208@reddit
Never understood getting excited over another man's car tf. Just grind your money
Overthetrees8@reddit
My biggest reason is the car community of full of insane meatheats.
Often car stuff turns into a total ego shit fest.
They might not be the majority but they are loud enough to drowned everyone out.
Ontop wrenching by yourself is horrible. It's really only fun with a buddy.
SlimJesusKeepIt100@reddit
The problem is you're stuck with the same shit that you eventually grow out of. Expand your tastes. I was originally only into 90s JDM now I'm into a Lil bit of everything
SignificantLiving938@reddit
Same thing happened to me as I aged. You realize that cars are nothing more than an expense. Even when not using them they cost money. Priorities are changing.
JordanEden29@reddit
My biggest issue with the current car scene that seems to affect my passion is all of the people on the internet that think if it doesn’t have 2000hp then it’s a slow pos. Or the whole “bet insert whatever car here would smoke it” everytime someone posts their car or a new car gets announced. It feels to me like the obsession with numbers matter more to people lately then sharing the hobby and enjoying cars for what they are.
blowurhousedown@reddit
For me, I lost interest in the culture. It’s a culture (this is a general statement) that dictates how you look is everything, and function takes a back seat. Worshipping a machine is just odd behavior and the time I spent buying/fixing up/selling toys was time away from doing something more meaningful and fulfilling. So I quit wasting time on BaT, Craigslist, and hanging out at car things; it was a lifestyle change.
merccoupe@reddit
As a long time car enthusiast, I get more excited now to see mundane everyday older cars that are in great older condition. The real troopers of the car world
Demache@reddit
Same. Show me a near immaculate late 80s Dodge Caravan or a 90s Ford Taurus and I will absolutely geek the fuck out. Those are cars that were meant to be used up and thrown away, and yet here they are, like they are brand new. Even if they are mundane, they are still a piece of automotive history.
JCDU@reddit
There's a "Boring Car Club" in the UK and they get more attention than the corporate parking lot that is the Porsche Club stand because people remember and relate to an old Morris Marina, everyone's dad or neighbour had one and they all broke down or caught fire or something.
There's also the festival of the mundane which is awesome.
9oz_Noodle@reddit
Everything on the road looks the exact same. 95% of vehicles on the road where I live are either squished minivan, crossover suv hybrid things or half ton pickups. Sedans and coupes and anything with soul has disappeared for the most part.

As I've gotten older and gone to more shows I find myself just being more particular with what excites me. At this point it's usually just RX7s and third gen Toyota supras because those are the cars that I grew up with. Now I can finally understand all the old guys sitting there with their muscle cars not paying attention to anything else.
Sadly in Wisconsin 3rd gen supras are almost non-existent somehow but rx7s are more common.
John_McAfee_@reddit
probably because its like a full time job except you pay shit tons of money just to have a car that drives on the same street as people with cars that dont spend thousands of dollars and work on their cars 24/7
at the end of the day its a car
BrandonW77@reddit
For me, most cars just aren't very interesting anymore. Supercars and hypercars have jumped the shark to where they no longer impress me, and normal cars seem to mostly look the same and are boring. I watch old episodes of Top Gear and there were so many cool and interesting cars back then, now it's mostly Camrys and SUV/Crossovers. Meh.
BloodWorried7446@reddit
i get more excited by a well preserved/ restored E30 or volvo brick than an exotica. I find cars that i saw as a youth (GenX) have a stronger appeal to me as i get older. Hell i saw a 1980s civic the other day on the road and was so thrilled.
havnar-@reddit
Check out YouTube channals like mightycarmods, autoalex, topdeadcenter, … they mostly work with cars that are attainable and do fun stuff with it.
VegaGT-VZ@reddit
Take it as a win. Cars are a huge time and money suck. Very expensive hobby and way to build an identity/community.
FlounderKind8267@reddit
I'm not all too thrilled about basic supercars like that too. Maybe find a different category of cars that tickles your fancy? Like for me, I like Kei cars and French hot hatchbacks and just weird cars in history

Negative-Primary696@reddit (OP)
I’m 16 so no car right now. When I get my licence (this year) I’m probably going to get something fun. I’m thinking a Vw Sirocco as that’s the best i can really get insurance on and it’s somewhat practical
slingshotroadster@reddit

rahim770@reddit
You should try getting into something you haven’t tried before, or really always wanted, thats what worked for me. Tuned Hondas sucked my lifelong passion for cars outta me but then it hit me like a freight train again when i got my first german car and first rotary. Never looked back since.
parmer9wst@reddit
Most new cars suck and suck even more to work on. The only cool ones are unaffordable. I find I enjoy a old car that is in perfect shape with everything working now. They are rare to see in the wild.
Tuques@reddit
Probably partially because you constantly see luxury cars that are completely unobtainable, and there are way too many "bought, not built" drivers these days. Also, all the automation in modern vehicles makes them way less fun.
VW-MB-AMC@reddit
Maye your taste is just changing. I remember being very interested in muscle cars and hot rods when I was younger. But gradually my main interest changed to old economy cars. It is still interesting to watch the rare screaming cars with giant V8 engines, but I often forget them as soon as I turn around. But if I see a base model 4 door Rambler with a straight 6 engine I go into a fit and my brain melts into mush.
I think one reason for this is that I can actually afford to buy, own and drive them.
Medium_Brain@reddit
In just under a year I started liking wagons and practical sensible cars that I used to never think about or believe we're ugly (turned 29 this year). I still check out cool sports or rare cars I see on the road but I'm not obsessed. Haven't watched a high end sports car video in a long time either, they just stopped being a "goal". Idk what happened, I don't have /I'm not expecting children any time soon. Guess it's just the years changing the mentality.
BoldNewBranFlakes@reddit
I’ve never been a supercar or hypercar guy so honestly I would be bored too. I like more “attainable” cars for the average person.
Like a Miata to an M3 is interesting to me. Once we hit Lamborghini territory I stop caring.

What kind of car do you have to tinker with? If you don't have a toy then that can cause the boredom.
And if it's because you can't afford it right now, just tinker with the old beater you can afford.
They don't all have to be $100,000 vehicles to be an "enthusiast" vehicle.
chillaxtion@reddit
Cars are pretty much stupid.

mishthegreat@reddit
New cars are shit, I drive trucks for a living and there are very few cars on the road that I think I would like to own realistically ie not six figure price tags, I really think motoring peaked in the 90s.
myredditlogintoo@reddit
Here's my take. I've seen all the supercars, and now they're boring. They're not being driven. Owners are pricks that are worried about you breathing on their precious babies. I'm interested in cars that have been driven, and the harder, the better. Cars that share a story with the owner. I will talk at length with the owner of a shitbox 1980s Volvo that has 650k miles on the odometer.
JCDU@reddit
There was a dude at Silverstone last year with a mint 240 estate and vintage caravan, it could've driven straight out of the 1980's brochure - even had the optional towing mirrors and roof spoiler - and people were straight up LOVING it, because it's way more interesting than yet another Porsche or Ferrari.
metamodern-mess@reddit
You need to find some weird stuff. Like a VW swapped Civic or some kei trucks.
Super cars are cool but.. boring.
nineyourefine@reddit
I think this is it. I'm sure it's generational but I grew up when super cars were actually...super. They were rare. They didn't make a new "limited" model every single year that cost $3.4 million just so the same group of jerkoff billionaires can buy them. When the Carerra GT came out or the Enzo was released, it was HUGE news. They didn't go on and make the "Carerra GT Superleggera Nurburgring Edition v4.0" to milk even more money out of it and dilute it.
Sure, the cars now are a technical marvel but not only will I never be able to afford it, there's so many now that I'm basically numb to them.
What excites me? Well today I walked by a super clean MK3 GTI, slightly lowered, great set of wheels and some other tasteful upgrades. That got me to do a walkaround of the car and appreciate the owners decisions with it. To me, that's more exciting than seeing another special edition Lambo.
JCDU@reddit
True true - I think the last actually interesting supercar was the Veyron because that was a Pietch passion project that was purely about pushing the limits of what was possible rather than milking cash out of rich folks.
But you can have more fun in a Mini or Caterham.
chocolateasswipe@reddit
I lost interest since fines are too expensive, margins to get one are thin and I can’t afford track days lol.
JCDU@reddit
I long ago stopped giving a shit about hypercars - most of them have nothing particularly interesting about them these days aside from a few gimmicks and are mostly built for tedious douchebags and influencers to show off in or brag about being 0.1 seconds faster than the other guy or that Porsche charged you an extra 30k to unbolt the rear seats to make it a few pounds lighter, it's all it's own ecosystem of bullshit designed to milk money from rich folks and the companies have it fairly well stitched up.
Plus most of us are never going to own one or have any use for one.
I find quirky or older stuff far more interesting, right down to cheap shitboxes that are someone's REAL pride and joy passion project, because that guy will have put more effort & thought into that car than the guy at the bar loudly bragging about his Lambo.
You can have as much fun in a Miata or Mini as a 250k Ferrari and people are more likely to smile when they see one.
I take my old Land Rovers to car shows and people freakin LOVE them because they are something different, they're attainable, and they obviously get used for interesting stuff - and while the supercar guys are telling people not to touch them we're letting kids climb in them which makes their day.
glox87@reddit
The cost made me lose interest. I've decided to go 100% with motorcycles.

Bc you don’t have a ford edge
michaelfkenedy@reddit
Because eventually you realize that they all fucking break. Rust. Fall apart. Are more trouble than they are worth.
They are expensive. You can’t drive them fast, or dangerously, or at all, without some kind of bullshit happening. You worry about driving it. You worry about not driving it. You worry about parking it to go into the store. You know something will break, you’re just waiting to learn what that will be.
You learn that you can’t have the cars you want. Until you finally get one only to learn it’s a giant pain in the ass.
You unconsciously realize you fell in love with cars as a kid in the naive way kids fall in love. The same way you fell in love with NES, or playdoh, or a cool rock. You revisit those things for more than a few minutes and think “I remember these being a lot cooler.”
You come to understand that the VTEC B16 your older siblings’ buddy had and everyone lusted over was anemic and slower than today’s cheapest econobox. That a turbo eagle talon is unreliable garbage. You wrench on a 69 charger only to realize it is cheaply made and plasticky. You sit in an E-Type and think “who could sit in this for more than a half hour?” You drive an old lifted pickup and it draws cops to you like a magnet.
LeaveNoStonedUnturn@reddit
Maybe cause all cars are shit, and car ownership is just strugglesome. I love cars, but I'm still aware they're all shit, and they break and they cost money 😂
Dedward5@reddit
I was never a big “static meets” guy but when I went I went with mates and it was just a place to spend time with friends. Maybe only once a year or so for a day out.
Used to go to the local track more to watch actual racing, again as much of an”day out with mates” as a car hobby.
As others are hinting at, having a project/track/hobby car is also part of it. If your not really engaged as your not “on the inside” it’s probably harder to sustain interest as your just watching other people participate. I’m not trying to gatekeep and say you’re not a proper car guy if you do t have an interesting car, life circumstances can get in the way, but for me it made me feel “part of it” more than “a spectator”
F_DOG_93@reddit
Maybe get behind the wheel of an Aston Martin or a Ferrari. Then you'd change your mind.
13Vex@reddit
It’s common to lose interest in super cars because you realize that they’re just completely unattainable. I get more excited over old VWs than Ferraris at car meets.

I'll always be interested and love cars, but I haven't been excited to be involved in anything car related, like events or meets in a long time. nonotburton@reddit
Oh, because hypercars are stupid vehicles.
Move your focus to cars that real people actually drive. Focus on manual transmissions and the quality of them. Learn to do your own maintenance.
Hypercars are like runway models. Optimized for a purpose, pretty to look at, and do nothing but suck your wallet dry.
opbmedia@reddit
I like cars but never was interested in car meets. Car meets is about socializing not about the cars. Buy one of the cars you lust after and you will get what I mean.
FindingUsernamesSuck@reddit
Why, I can't answer - but I'll offer suggestions.
I don't know where or how you commonly drive, but I think a good drive in the right car will be good. If you have some winding back roads close enough to you, take your car there and lean into it a bit. If you dont have a suitable car, rent one off Turo.
Try one of those exotic dream car experiences - I bet getting behind the wheel of some of those cars you see will change your appreciation of them for the better.
If that doesn't work just rinse and repeat.
StarsandMaple@reddit
Go to a classic car, or 'nornal' car meet up.
I care about the work done to a car, whether it's a Yaris that's track ready, or a super nice restomoded E30.
People can buy an expensive car, you can't make it have personality and heart.
Serious_Lettuce6716@reddit
I recently lost my mechanic job and decided to not go back into it. That was a shit 25 year career and I no longer want any part of it. But that’s what made me lose my passion for cars. Picking up a wrench only feels like a chore now. Also, all cars are pieces of shit.

I live 3 minutes from the biggest weekly exotic car show in the country and only go once every couple years. You see a La Ferrari once you dont need to see it every week. KnifeEdge@reddit
Do you own a car you're "into" or do you just look at them from afar?
It's hard to remain really invested in something you never partake in.
The super cars and hyper cars are flashy but they're not really "enthusiast" cars. They're status symbols. Yes they may be amazing but they're not amenable to tinkering... Which is something that really should be essential to any hobby....after all just looking at something all day isn't a very good use of your time.
I have more fun in my mx5 than my ferrari because it's more carefree, I can change components and see how it feels, learn about how these things operate and what is actually important vs what is snake oil. You simply can't do that in a ferrari let alone hyper cars like a koenigsegg.
Get a project car and work on it, take it to auto X or a track day. Don't just throw money at the project, throw time and effort to learn. If that STILL doesn't reinvigorate your poison then yes you've truly feel out of love with the hobby.

I ended up just getting boring Japanese cars. Still do my own work on them. Still enjoy a project here and there. I go to 1 car meet a year, no cars and coffee anymore. It's honestly really nice not giving a fuck about you car. I park really close to the side of the garage so my wife and kids have more room. I feel like when I first got into cars and then discovered all the luxury/exotic stuff I got all excited, like 10+ years later I don't really care about them as much (probably cause I'll never be able to afford them). I get more excited over a 458 or a nice CRX than any current gen supercar. Find and explore what excites you. Don't worry if it's not the greatest/fastest/latest.

Just a natural life change. Probably nothing to worry about.

For me I lose passion about super expensive stuff the older I get and the more I realize how unobtainable it is. I love driving cars, and the fun about new stuff is dreaming about having one, thinking about how I might use it. But as a result I’m not interested in stuff I will never experience.

Sounds like you're car-spotting not car-enjoying. I'd consider myself a huge car enthusiast but would be bored to tears only looking a "regular" sport/super cars all the time. Find a meet where dudes bring projects, or build something of your own and its much more enjoyable. Go to the races. Everyone has their own flavor.
