NIMBYs pushing to close Santa Monica Airport now trying to delay closure

But only because they want to prevent the land from being used for affordable housing.

The aviation enthusiast in me wants SMO to be open forever. The corporate pilot in me likes BUR a loooooooot more.
SkippytheBanana@reddit
Didn’t the FAA warn Santa Monica that if it closes the government has full right to take the land back and use it for anything like a toxic waste dump?
hannahranga@reddit
Open air 100LL storage ponds

ypk_jpk@reddit
I would love to see a toxic cesspool be installed at KSNA if it were to close
AlligatorFist@reddit
So no great change then?
ItsNotAboutX@reddit
The people complaining about KSMO are jackasses, but calling Santa Monica a cesspool is a choice.
Especially coming from Pennsylvania.
mustang__1@reddit
what the actual fuck does Pennsylvania have to do with it?
And the people surrounding this airport trying to close it does turn the area in to a cesspool.
onetwentyeight@reddit
Pilots may be toxic but we aren't waste.
AlligatorFist@reddit
Yeah, I think my joke missed the mark, I was calling Santa Monica a cesspool for their behavior, so putting in another toxic cesspool or waste dump wouldn’t change much.
SkippytheBanana@reddit
It’s also 100% factual. There was some letter the FAA sent the city that reference that they were serious because the airport was gifted WW2 property. I really think they gave the toxic waste dump as an extreme example to make their point.
AlligatorFist@reddit
That is hilariously on point of them. I love it.
goatfuckersupreme@reddit
i was gonna say, at that point they might as well just stay open
AlligatorFist@reddit
I think people misunderstood my joke, I was calling Santa Monica a cesspool, putting a toxic cesspool there would mean nothing changed from the rest of the town.
EHP42@reddit
NIMBYs are not good at looking to the future in general.
Mr-Plop@reddit
We'll take 100LL all day over poor people.
vyqz@reddit
“A lot of the risk could be reduced simply by delaying closing,” said Marc Verville, who lives near the airport.
“To protect ourselves, we should keep the airport open until we can address the political landscape and correct it”
🤦
Smiziley@reddit
The entitlement just oozes out of that last statement.
EHP42@reddit
It's wild, considering what their complaints were. They are admitting they'd take long term brain damage (their claims as to the effect of living near an airport) over having to live near people who can't afford to buy the overpriced homes there.
Mr-Plop@reddit
Well, in their defense, you can't hurt what's already damage.
colawarsveteran@reddit
So annoying the drive some people have to try and screw up the aviation hobby.
kyle_Larsons_mole@reddit
Tf did they think is was gonna be used for?
mustang__1@reddit
Maybe a dirt pit like Meigs?
kyle_Larsons_mole@reddit
From Chicagoland area. Too soon.
juuceboxx@reddit
I think they literally wanted just an empty plot of land and nothing else. Anything to stop the noise except having the poors nearby
theonlypeanut@reddit
Apparently they only want a 200 acre park, lol.
mduell@reddit
Which will be full of homeless?
saberlight81@reddit
Anything that they didn't think threatened their own property values lol. At their core that is the only thing NIMBYs care about. I think they were pushing for a big park.

It's legitimately funny for a subject that has never made me laugh before. There's no previous bar, but this sets the bar high.
nascent_aviator@reddit
Living next to an airport is "maddening and dangerous." But it has nothing, nothing on living near the poors.
ghjm@reddit
I'll change my mind the day a Cessna 172 breaks into my car for drug money.
SoyMurcielago@reddit
More like avgas money
TrineonX@reddit
The airplane has gotten far more of my money than any thief has or will.
nascent_aviator@reddit
Thieves can't steal money I've already set on fire!
saml01@reddit
Affordable housing means luxury condos that sell for a few million each. No one is getting a building permit for section 8 housing.
tical007@reddit
Not necessarily. Within the complex, a developer can reserve units for section 8, or income restrictions, for tax breaks.
And in Santa Monica, those tax breaks would be welcomed.
Now, the people utilizing these units, based on the complete 180 of these residents in the article, probably won't be.
saml01@reddit
Thats exactly the point I was trying to make.
tical007@reddit
It seems that your point is missing though. If they came out and said "No affordable housing at all, market price rents", I don't think you'd see residents up in arms, clutching grandma pearls.
The fact that the airport was to be removed because of safety and health, but is now praised, because the perceived "others" will be more of a safety and health issue, is funny, yet a deserved slap in their face.
Because they aren't gonna say the quiet part out loud. Remember, they bill themselves as this uber progressive, free housing for everyone etc, utopia.
And you see, when it's time to act on said uber utopia.............🤷
Pratt-and-Whitney@reddit
This is what happens in the Minneapolis metro, except the state pretty much forces it. Like 8% of almost every apartment building goes to Section 8
SilentSpr@reddit
You’re wrong and someone else has already pointed that out. But even luxury condos will help with supply and demand issues the housing market is facing right now. The guy buying the new luxury condo is no longer competing with you on the regular market now that they have a luxury condo
Ghostlypunk121@reddit
These BANANAs don't understand supply and demand.
DiamineViolets4Roses@reddit
I can't even this early in the morning. People actually said these things publicly.
Risk? Seriously?
I sincerely hope that sanctimonious fool is never in a position where she personally understands the importance of affordable housing.
Jets don't burn 100LL, as the sentence suggests to a casual reader. Over time, very few planes in the CA skies will burn 100LL, which is conveniently ignored entirely.
CarbonGod@reddit
Wait, 70 FREAKING YEAR FIGHT!??!?!
MeatServo1@reddit
The correct term is not NIMBY, since it’s not just the airport they don’t want. It’s BANANA: build absolutely nothing anywhere near anyone.
These pricks think they’re entitled to a noise- and people-free oasis in the second most populous area in the country. Fuck em all.
tical007@reddit
It's not even people free, it's certain type of people free.
drgmaster909@reddit
Yeah this isn't what "NIMBY" is.
"NIMBY" is "I want a certain thing" right up until they propose to put it near you. Like, "We should build an excess of affordable housing," "Oh, like near you?" "Well wait, Not in my backyard!"
Unless I'm missing the excess of Santa Monicans who are advocating for an airport, "Just not near us!" then NIMBY is the wrong term to be using.
BANANA is much more apropos.
FriendlyBelligerent@reddit
wow
poisonandtheremedy@reddit
With the incoming rise in VTOL inner-city urban EV transport, these dipshits are going to be clamoring for a... hrm.. what should we call it... airport maybe (?!?) to flitter around the LA basin.
TheMadAsshatter@reddit
There's songs written about how toxic the culture in LA is for a reason.
poisonandtheremedy@reddit
This literally happens everywhere around the country.
Flyboy2020@reddit
Hahahahaha what NIMBY losers. Literally just concerned about themselves at the expense of anyone and everything
UncharacteristicZero@reddit
Fuck these people, no airport, but no"Poor's" either
TheOvercookedFlyer@reddit
People who are against affordable housing are just rotten inside. Housing should be for everyone! Even if its small or big, simple or fancy, there's enough land for everyone to have something to call their own.
Ambitious_Bee9564@reddit
There sure is. It's called California City. Have fun!
onetwentyeight@reddit
Stuck between an airport and the poors. Oh no!
Cue world's tiniest violin quartet.
Noisycarlos@reddit
Honestly, it doesn't have to be affordable housing to help prices. While not preferable, even luxury buildings help bring housing costs down because wealthy people are now not competing for the other limited options.
Opening-Two6723@reddit
Rich people ruin everything!!!
condor120@reddit
lol only thing NIMBYs hate more than airports are their perception of the poors
PLIKITYPLAK@reddit
lol, they wouldn't be Liberals if they weren't massive hypocrites. No surprise here.
PLIKITYPLAK@reddit
Downvotes? ohh, I forgot this is Reddit and doesn't represent the real pilot community thank god.
FlyingRed@reddit
Love how you came back to check how your comment was doing 😂
noghri87@reddit
Geeze some people with do anything to keep from assisting anyone less fortunate than themselves.
Stewardess-Slayer@reddit
I wouldn’t want to live next to the poors either
