I believe in the original, the cat didn't have front legs at all - just stumps - but his editor suggested that that might a liiitttle too much, so Larson added the peg legs.
You know what? I remember at my school as a kid my favourite teachers used to frame and set up originals on the walls, I recall that, he had small stubs hanging down rather than those sticks, of course it's probably my imagination and yet...
Anyway I scoffed at the thought of those being originals (Probably copies but still) perhaps I now own those today old old geezers (if they are still alive) an excuse
Lol I don’t have one to share but this comic reminds of a funny and true story.
I used to work the mailroom for a large resort. My job was to pick up, then open all the mail and take the opened mail and place it into the appropriate mailbox for the designated department.
One day while doing my stack of mail I noticed an envelope I had just opened was completely empty, someone had mailed an empty envelope.
Curious on who had sent this I turned the envelope over to check the return address. In bold lettering it said:
Ok so I’m a middle school art teacher and each year the first lesson I teach is an intro to comics course based on Scott mcclouds book. I reference Farside as a comic strip that doesn’t need movement of time / multiple panels to tell an intriguing story. I use my favorite panels to showcase which are the “Trouble Brewing” series. They’re always funny (I mean all of Larsons work is) and a perfect example of visual narrative that kids can easily see and explain.
This one! I got my dad a Midvale shirt for his birthday when I was like 8. He absolutely adored it and “Midvale School for the Gifted“ has been a running joke between us for 32 years. 💕
I had this on a T-shirt that I wore to a gifted and talented class at my school. Another kid in that class also had one. It was great when we both wore them on a field trip.
My cat died like this. My mom was obviously distraught, but after she told people at work, people started sending this to her. This was the 90s so it was real paper. They’d use the inter office mail
Mine died this way, too, I'm so sorry. It's been decades, and I'm still so fucked up about it. I know it's a comic, but I also feel like people don't take it seriously enough irl. I check every appliance carefully before I ever let it start. I hate that people couldn't have compassion for your poor mom, that's just nuts, but then I forget sometimes how many people think non-human animals matter about as much as a material object.
I was looking for a less pixelated version and oddly enough found some with a slightly different text - omitting the word "trick".
Found a nice colorized version, too: https://static1.cbrimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/the-far-side-darrel-has-ben-slipped-a-reverse-spoon.jpg
This one you posted is my favorite of all time. We had this pinned up on the wall in my gifted class in 1993 and it triggered a childhood full of Gary Larsen and a love for the Far Side!
I don't know how to post the picture but I love the one with an ice cream driving and it said Failed Marketing Ideas and the trucks song was singing "I Cuss, You Cuss, We All Cuss For Asparagus"
He’s not trying to push the door open he’s just using it to hold himself up because he’s exhausted by the college level classes and work load of the gifted academy.
These two are tied for first for me. I used to push pull doors and say "my application to Midvale was accepted". Most folks didn't get it, those that did laughed and usually asked if I had a concentric ring birthmark.
Anytime I see something screech across a room and latch onto someone's neck, and the guy screams and tries to get it off, I have to laugh, because what is that thing?
I had a t-shirt with this exact comic. Farside was my absolute favorite. One of my all times was the one with Chimps talking about that “…Jane Goodall tramp…”.
This just prompted me to search for a Farside sub. Thank you!
As a kid, I was in a Gifted/Talented program at my grade school. OP's comic was my favorite because I'm certain that more than one of my teachers viewed me like this.
Yep. My mom brought a FarSide book home for me with this on the cover and she said, "Look! It's you!" My kids are the same and when they do something like this I will say "FarSide".
My bank has an exit door with a deceptively labeled catch that looks like you should push it but in fact you pull to open the door inwards. I have thought of this cartoon about twice a month for the last 15 years while depositing my paychecks
My jr high teachers modified that one to say our own school name instead of midvale. They printed it out and made transparent copies for the overhead projector. It was surprisingly convincing, same font and everything.
Then during “gate” classes, sometimes they would randomly put that up and try to see which kids took it personally or were gullible enough to think it was a real far side. “Why did they make it about our school?!”
They definitely thought some of the kids were like that.
Haha. Same. That pretty much applied to all of us in the program. It was called TAG for "talented and gifted," but of course all the other students called it fag-tag or just fag.
*
My dad always marked up his calendar with names of someone in the family. He passed away, so I took up the tradition. Today's with the name of our Bulldog and one of our cats.
Just searched it. "Anatidaephobia" is not recognized by the DSM-5 as a real phobia. It was created by Larson for this joke. However, ""orgnithophobia" is the fear of birds and "alektorophobia" is the fear of chickens.
One of my middle school teachers had this comic on the door to his class because it was a pull door and he loved to see how many people would try to push it
I unfortunately can't find it, but I think about this one probably monthly...
It shows two beach towels on the sand, with footprints leading 80% of the way from the first towel to the second, then the looping back to the first towel. The caption comments on how the sand was too hot, so they gave up a turned back around.
I still have hard copies of every single Gary Larson collection ever printed. My favorite comic of all time.
My favorite of all of them is the two fat nerdy kids (Larson drew fat nerds so well) who are throwing a baby bear back and forth. In the background in the distance is the mother just staring at them.
The caption of the comic just says "And no one ever heard from the Anderson brothers again."
One of my uncles has his fridge plastered top to bottom with Far Sides, to the point that new additions ended up on the walls and cupboards near the fridge. My dad tried to plaster our fridge too, but mom put her foot down and restricted his fridge cartoons to just the side of the fridge, so he was forced to be much more discerning in what comics (funnies page and editorial) were worthy of being put up on the fridge.
This is not my favorite by far, but it’s one of the first ones I think of because I would share my books with my friend and I remember at 10 year olds laughing at this one for about a week
I think it failed precisely because people respected Larson so highly. Any other cartoonist: “huh. Cows aren’t good at making tools. Whatever”. Larson: “there must be a deeper meaning here…”
"Think about it, Murray. ... If we could get this baby runnin', we could run over hikers, pick up females, chase down mule deer- man, we'd be the grizzlies from hell."
I was in the gifted program in middle and high school. In my district, that program was small enough that one teacher basically covered the whole thing (and still had time to spare to teach other classes). I wound up spending a lot of time in her classroom since I wound up taking several of the AP classes she taught. A printout of this particular Far Side strip was hung up behind her desk for the whole time I was a student here. Great comic ordinarily--even better in that context.
I used to have this one on a t-shirt. When I was in high school we took a family trip to NYC. I had always heard how rude and aloof New Yorkers are. We got in the elevator at the Empire State Building and the operator looked at my shirt and made a face like I-don't-want-to-smile-but-it's-funny. Teenage me thought it was awesome that I made a New Yorker smile.
I've always loved this one. It looks like the dogs eyes have a real interest in the data. I think its just the shape of the head but he looks really concerned and intrigued.
He is not trying to open the door. He is simply catching his breath. That sign says nothing about the building upon which he leans being a school for rockstar athletes. No, this little man brings a more formidable and enduring contribution: the might of his intellectual and societal potential.
You see, he soon will -- and for the remainder of his life -- take an immeasurable and unwavering stand for us, waging a ceaseless and reasonably improbable battle against those who dare stand against those of us cannot stand for ourselves. He will draft memorandum. He will cultivate hope through acts of solidarity and public proclamations of sustainable resources afforded to the communities most in need. He will host a podcast dedicated to the proliferation of high protein plant-based nutrition that also is surprisingly tasty. (His secret ingredient is a 40/60 mixture of MSG and onion powder. Don't tell anyone.)
For those who cannot speak he will loudly voice the will, the needs, and heart of his community. For those who cannot see, he will make clear an ever evolving vision of a world better than the one into which we were born. He will rise up to shield us from those who would see us lower ourselves.
Despite not knowing our names, we will see his sacrifice and the love he has for us all. In return, e will show him our gratitude. One day, many years from now, he will learn of our willingness to sacrifice all that we are to protect him in his deepest moment of vulnerability. It will be interest on a debt we can never fully repay but he will know our admiration.
His name is Shane, and he is a rockstar at the Midvale School for the Gifted, class of 2028.
A few of my favorites are “Mary had a little lamb” and also “speaking only German, Fritz didn’t realize that the clouds were becoming threatening” 🤣 and also the Jane Goodall one too lol
The anthropologists are coming to study a "primitive" tribe, so the tribe is hiding all their modern conveniences that they supposedly aren't supposed to have.
This was on my family fridge for my entire childhood. We had a not so smart lab called Muggins so my dad edited the text to reflect. That and the cat fud one.
Fun fact: Gary Larsen graduated from the same high school I did… we had a regular substitute who used to be a FT teacher there during Gary’s time and he looked just like a Larsen character.
I was pretty sure this was only half of the original comic. The other half was the exact same thing with a cat but the cat only heard Blah Blah Blah without even picking up on the name.
I work at a Symphony now, and this one lives rent free in my head.
My second favorite is the one from the sound engineer's perspective, there is a band on stage, and there is a finger about to press the 'suck' button 🤣
Had this in my locker at the restaurant I worked at and a coworker and I used as therapy- when we were weeded we’d whisper or mouth across the room “I hate this place”
In 2001, a study of thagomizers by McWhinney et al.[16] showed a high incidence of trauma-related damage. This too supports the theory that the principal function of the thagomizer was defense in combat.
Amoebas can only respond to stimulus, they don’t have internal thoughts.
In this cartoon, the wife amoeba is complaining that all her husband ever does is respond to things, rather than taking initiative and making things happen, which happens in some marriages.
My favorite is the one where two spiders have built away but the bottom of a children's slide on a playground. One saying to the other, "If we pull this off, we'll eat like kings!"
As a kid in gifted programs in school this image followed me until high school, to the point my parents thought it was so funny they had it framed and put up in our media room.
Just the utter absurdity and targeted specificity of the word. I mean, who wouldn't panic in that situation. I play these little word exercises with my kids, where I'll swap out a similar sounding word, or part of a word, to completely change its meaning, or we'll make our own portmanteau. It has led to some interesting places, like when my daughter didn't know the word for brunch, so she came up with luncfast, which, honestly, sounds like a Scandinavian seafood dish.
I remember people using this when that Ashley Madison (the dating service for people that wanted to have affairs) leak came out and it was like 97% dudes
This made me go out and finally…get the Larson boxed set…. We’re going to need these in print for the end of the world, when the chickens and cows master AI and become our overlords.
His commentary on this in the big anthology (Complete Far Side, I think? Could be wrong) was great, about how he was really nervous that newspaper editors would have a problem with human skulls being shown like that, and he purposely gave them goofy expressions to avoid that. But he has a great line about how they’re everywhere now, and he even saw Dennis The Menace had one on his shelf or something like that.
fun fact!
The spiky bit on the end of a stegosaurus' tail didnt have a name until a far side comic made one up and the scientific community just ran with it
We had that on a coffee mug when I was a kid. Mom and I had a shared love of FS and she'd buy me a daily calendar every year for Christmas, until they stopped making them.
Fifi running at the door the lady has barricaded just had young me questioning and trying to make sense of why she was doing this. Was she a monster or was Fifi the true source of the evil?
Hilarious and it's a bit different than the usual Larson, I also like "Stingy hour" as it can also mean that they have small discounts for the stingy, or because they are just waiting to sting some unwitting victim
Would have been even funnier if a chicken and a pig too would have been there, both staring condescendingly at the poor guy that drew the shortest straw with their arms crossed
When I was \~20 a friend of mine took me out to the range to shoot his very large rifle. Our other friend who was with us did that while he was lining up a shot.
Fortunately said gun owning friend was well trained and he just said 'ha ha, mine is louder' and pulled the trigger. He was right. In retrospect we really should have had ear protection while shooting that thing.
I thought there was a Far Side like that though—there was a chair on the left of the frame, and the woman was getting up out of it. I’ll go look for it.
That one right there. The one OP posted. I had that on a tee shirt a long time ago. One day, just after I had bought it, my son was having a hard day and was upset and crying while I held him. Then, suddenly he started giggling uncontrollably. He had noticed the shirt.
Same. I loved it. Especially the small panel on the bottom of the shirt, where the kid has put down his books and starts beating on the door.
One time at school, someone looked at my shirt and was like, "that's horrible!" Turns out they had interpreted "gifted" in the euphemistic way, as in "special." I had to explain that no, I'm not an awful person, I'm laughing at myself.
When the scientist invents the helmet so he can finally hear what dogs are saying when they bark, and he’s walking around the neighborhood and all the dogs are just going “hey! Hey! Hey! Heyhey!”
The midvale school for the gifted was the first one I saw and still one of my favs if not my favs. Reminds me of sitting down with mom, and sometimes my dad, my when I was younger, reading the far side books and just laughing together.
My elementary school gifted teacher had a copy of this that was edited to say the name of our school.
It was pretty good, and honestly accurate for more of us than I would have expected.
Almost every book fair I got one of Gary Larson or Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes). Even extended the collection after book fairs and now have multiples to give away to younger generations
Holy shit!, I was killing some time in a bookstore yesterday and saw a far side collection. As I flipped through it, I wandered to myself how many people my age have had their entire sense of humor shaped by these books.
I don’t remember which number and date it is, but it’s a couple in a fallout shelter with nuclear bombs going off above ground, and his wife is like “all this time spent working on a fallout shelter and you forget to pack a can opener?!”
I am not sure the vintage, 1985 copywrite date. I grew up reading them in the funny pages and at some point discovered https://www.thefarside.com/. Always save the ones that really make me chuckle.
It took me years to understand one that went something like "Greg and Bob had wandered into what was to be the funniest comic of all time" as a kid I was like wtf what was the comic!! I want to know!!
My absolute favorite, mainly because my mom hates slugs and was always grossed out by them when I was growing up. I send this comic to her every year when I see my first slug of spring.
Where an Air Force jet is trying to shoot a Microsoft tower building and the missile goes around the building to the other side. The caption read (something like), "Who makes our software again".
One day in our Jr High gifted class I said "You know, we're basically just like the kids down the hall in special ed. We're all kinda weird, we don't fit in normal classes. They give us special things to do to keep us busy so we don't distract the other kids. We go on field trips on the short bus." The teacher let out a nervous laugh and the room was real quiet for a minute until one of my classmates quietly asked "Ms....we're not special ed kids...right?"
Our teacher, a total bro for running with our weird scattered lines of thought, said "gifted is another way of saying special."
My best friend then followed up with "hey since we know we're special ed now can we make macaroni pictures instead of writing these BASIC programs? I love macaroni art."
So anyway that's how an 8th grade gifted class stopped writing BASIC programs to do astronomy stuff and instead spent a week making sick macaroni pictures.
That's such an awesome story! Your gifted teacher was cool. Mine was ok. She was definitely a Boomer party girl, who had a bit of a drinking problem. She once told one of my friends in there that she wouldn't piss down his throat if his lungs were on fire, so he never came back. I rarely participated after middle school. TAG was usually just once a week on Wednesdays, but the field trips were great. Later in high school, she was a chaperone on a trip to Washington. We flew from Huntsville, AL to Memphis and then on to DC. I was sitting next to her and it was my third plane ride in my life. Between Memphis and DC, the plane hit some turbulence and then nose dove for a couple thousand feet. The emergency masks came out and some people were screaming. She grabbed my hand and said something like "I hope this doesn't go down." Even though I'm a nervous flyer who's very afraid of crashing, all I could think about is " It sucks that the last thing I'm going to smell is Mrs. J---'s coffee/cigarette/liquor breath that's she's trying to cover up with Extra peppermint gum." Thankfully the plane recovered.
I was a gifted kid. My dad has sent me this card as my birthday card. More than once. I don't know whether this is a sign of his mental decline or mine.
My stepmother once swallowed a chicken bone and got it lodged in her throat. We were in a small town in the west coast and they nearly had to have her airlifted to Vancouver. But the local hospital managed to get it out. This is the comic that her work colleagues had on her get-well card.
I literally just referenced the Midvale comic the other day when I was pressing against what I thought was a door and was actually part of a window. (I was tired, okay?)
I sometimes ask people if they went to Midvale school of the gifted if they are being stupid. To date not a one realized it was a slight, or a far side comic.
It's because many of us (or our friends) could be seen as both being very intelligent and dumb as a bag of rocks at the same time. We all knew that kid.
Funny story; when I was in grade school, I had a book of Far Side comics, so, when Valentine's Day came around, my mom and I went to the library and Xeroxed them all, and cut them out, made our own Valentine's Day cards—I think we just glued them to poster board or something, to make them sturdier—anyway, I was a bit nervous, but everyone absolutely LOVED them, and they were an absolute hit!
My dad had a Far Side calendar and when this Midvale one came up he wrote my name on the kid’s shirt and ceremoniously presented it to me at dinner that night.
My fav is the one where this woman has clearly flung her windows open and there’s a window washers scaffold in front of her window but no window washers on it
My son is reading through one of the far side books my dad gave me when I was a kid. There’s so much context to these punchlines to explain, which I suppose shows how good Gary Larson was.
My high school guidance counselor had this on the wall of her office and I could never take my eyes off of it when I met with her. She was an awesome lady, too. I'd say this is probably my favorite one because of her!
OMG, THIS one is mine! I reference a ton. As a kid, it made me giggle uncontrollably. I reference it all the time. Pretty sure I made a copy and used it as a textbook cover.
I swear there’s a Far Side cartoon to fit any situation, which means I find myself thinking about them, quoting them, and describing them to others all the time, usually chuckling to myself like a goon.
The female chimp grooming the male chimp and finding the blonde hair, accusing the male chimp of doing some more “research” with that “tramp”.
When Jane Goodall came and spoke to my college in the mid-1990s, they sold T-shirts with this comic outside her lecture, which is funny because originally one of her lawyers tried to raise a stink about the comic with Gary Larson until Goodall saw the “offending” comic, found it very amusing, and told her lawyer to “heel”.
So, not only was it a classic, but it went from being a bone of contention, to being used to raise money on merch for the Jane Goodall Foundation (which I was only too happy to support)
Also if IIRC, Larson visited Jane Goodall’s research facility in Africa at her behest only to be attacked by Frodo, one of the more notoriously aggressive chimps.
We had this on a coffee mug in my house growing up. It was probably used twice as much as any of the others because we all loved the joke so much. This one is definitely a classic.
I resent the hell out of the one you posted. It was used to tear apart the gifted and talented program in favor of disabled ed in my my home district. I'd have benefited from the G&T program c. 1989, specifically, would have spared me a year of college tuition, but... nope! The ADA is supreme.
Probably the first one of these. Or the one with a guy trying to speak to a duck in different languages before he tries "Quack?" Or the scientist who managed to translate what dogs mean when they bark. Or..

My cat died like this. My mom was obviously distraught, but after she told people at work, people started sending this to her. This was the 90s so it was real paper. They’d use the inter office mail
Electrical-Set2765@reddit
Mine died this way, too, I'm so sorry. It's been decades, and I'm still so fucked up about it. I know it's a comic, but I also feel like people don't take it seriously enough irl. I check every appliance carefully before I ever let it start. I hate that people couldn't have compassion for your poor mom, that's just nuts, but then I forget sometimes how many people think non-human animals matter about as much as a material object.

My bank has an exit door with a deceptively labeled catch that looks like you should push it but in fact you pull to open the door inwards. I have thought of this cartoon about twice a month for the last 15 years while depositing my paychecks
BoredOfReposts@reddit
My jr high teachers modified that one to say our own school name instead of midvale. They printed it out and made transparent copies for the overhead projector. It was surprisingly convincing, same font and everything.
Then during “gate” classes, sometimes they would randomly put that up and try to see which kids took it personally or were gullible enough to think it was a real far side. “Why did they make it about our school?!”
They definitely thought some of the kids were like that.
gopms@reddit
I was in a similar program and my parents bought me a mug with this on it. They definitely viewed us this way. Fair enough.
BrainFartTheFirst@reddit
Same for me. For our family it was an even funnier joke because my dad used to go to a school called Midvale.
SplakyD@reddit
Haha. Same. That pretty much applied to all of us in the program. It was called TAG for "talented and gifted," but of course all the other students called it fag-tag or just fag.

In my district, that program was small enough that one teacher basically covered the whole thing (and still had time to spare to teach other classes).

Amoebas can only respond to stimulus, they don’t have internal thoughts.
In this cartoon, the wife amoeba is complaining that all her husband ever does is respond to things, rather than taking initiative and making things happen, which happens in some marriages.

His commentary on this in the big anthology (Complete Far Side, I think? As a teenager who skipped grades and was in the gifted class, I had this on a t-shirt I wore to school every Monday.
I thought it was ironically funny, in retrospect I think it was that twice over because it was pretty accurate to me.
SplakyD@reddit
Absolutely. It was definitely accurate to everyone in our gifted program.
ryguymcsly@reddit
SplakyD@reddit
