Finally got an amber Dec Terminal ! This is m'y new battlestation !

I started my pc life with an amber screen. It was the monitor for an 286 XT.
the_darkener@reddit
Me too. I wish I never got rid of mine. Amber monochrome is just the best.
fbman01@reddit
And the games never looked too bad.. finished space quest 1 to 3 on that screen.
CosmicFirefly@reddit
330+ in amber, with the non wps lk201. Kinda jelly.
delphinealdrine@reddit (OP)
Sorry, 'wps' ?
CosmicFirefly@reddit
Most of the lk201 keyboards I end up seeing are the ones with the silkscreen for the word processor that was part of DEC's ALL-IN-1 office suite. http://xahlee.info/kbd/vt220_terminal.html You should be able to see both kinds of keyboard here. Functionally identical, just a different silkscreen on the caps.

Sorry, 'wps' ?
bigbosmer@reddit
Nice! What are you noodling around with on it right now?
delphinealdrine@reddit (OP)
I'm planning to use it to manage the building automation of my university.

I’ve just realised that in the early days of the web terminals were still relevant with browsers like lynx, after a few years of JavaScript they couldn’t really meaningfully use the web but in these days of LLMs you could completely have an engaging time typing back and forth with an llm, you could probably do it over the serial port to a raspberry pi running Ollama.

Amber plasma displays are my favorite screens ever. How I’d wish they made them in high res for modern systems.
Foxiest_@reddit
This a CRT though.
GameboyNerd23@reddit
They always remind me of portal because of the end credits
dm319@reddit
That display looks remarkably clear.
sideburn2020@reddit
Dang that crisp amber screen gave me a warm and fuzzy memory
AistoB@reddit
Lucky! I’ve always wanted one. They are ridiculously priced on eBay for something that was trash not too long ago.
SolarpunkGnome@reddit
Amber is the best. Still run my terminal emulators that way too
danielrpa@reddit
Always like Amber better than green phosphor!

Man, I remember dialling into BBS’s and the “internet” on computers like these in the university lab 30 years ago.

Real Fallout New Vegas vibes!

How would on make linux mint look like this?
Lanuhsislehs@reddit
That's dope as hell!

onaretrotip@reddit
Beautiful screen!
rpocc@reddit
My congratulations, buddy!
CostEffectiveSalmon@reddit
I need you to put your head over the top of the display and inhale deeply through your nose for me.
TygerTung@reddit
Pretty sure they used to have terminals like this at the libraries in my city, back in the '90s.
doge1982@reddit
Love it!
RamiroCruz13@reddit
Noice! 🙂👌🏻
kpmgeek@reddit
Fedora still ships locales for ascii and us-iso by default, while debian and the like have dropped them. Goes a long way to solving the problems with modern tui software, but there's still lots that doesn't respect terminfo/locale.
ABrownCoat@reddit
I love those amber screens!

I used to have a WYSE 60 at the foot of my bed in school run to my FreeBSD machine back in college at the end of a 25' serial line. I miss that terminal so much. Now a days, with you tube, I probably could have fixed it, as one day it just stopped working. I should have kept it.
n1ghtbringer@reddit
I had an amber WYSE 60 that I played with in college and eventually ditched when I moved out of my parents' house. Mine worked but I never had a "real" use for a terminal when the console was 5 feet away.
That and the Compaq Deskpro I trashed when it died (in retrospect, I probably blew a tantalum) are the things I miss the most that I've gotten rid of.
locnar1701@reddit
My usage was that I could sit up, login, and get my email before I had to get out of the bed on that cold stained concrete and make my way to my desk chair. Additionally, the weekends when the roomie was not in, I could fire up the stereo and run mpg123 to play some mp3s without leaving the bed.
n1ghtbringer@reddit
See, that's making good use of a terminal!

Just don't accept any jobs involving a Platinum Chip, okay?

Droopy reference?

Señor Droopy from Guadalupe.
I thought I was the only one who got that reference.
