Elder Xennials - save pennies for the Statue of Liberty?

Not sure if this was just a regional thing or nationwide. I was in Jersey at the time and remember saving and bringing pennies to school to help fund the repairs to the Statue of Liberty.

I don’t remember this either. I remember my hometown was putting in a new playground near the zoo and they asked all elementary students to donate their Pennies for the playground

I am in Philadelphia and we did this, also UNICEF donations during Halloween.
