It’s The Weekend in 1988 and You’re Going “Out”

Going to the mall, work, a football game, hanging out, whatever.
If you were a cologne/perfume user, what did you spray on before you left?
I was probably rocking some knock-off Poison, snuck some of my sister’s Giorgio Beverly Hills or Red and my brothers bathed in Polo (the Green one).

Drakkar noir!
SlippyMcGee87@reddit
My college roommate and I went by a rule that Drakkar was only meant to be worn at night, because it was a stronger cologne. Daytime, my go-to was Halston Z-14.
Mo_Steins_Ghost@reddit
I had the cap!

The hottest girl in high school says she liked it so that’s what I wore.
Sadly, we remained only friends, lol. What a cool chick.

Like a strait dumass I once (in HS) drowned myself in it! Love tha smell but stank fiercely! Lesson learned. 🤦🏿♂️ nobody taught me how to administer 🤣

Yeah, wasn’t like you could run to the internet and learn.
I’m sure most of us teens overdid it at first.
agentmkultra666@reddit
The internet exists now, and yet I’ll still encounter men in public spaces who have drowned themselves in Axe😂

And women. On a hiking trail. Dripping in stank perfume.

It was either Drakkar Noir or RP Polo. That’s what all the cool boys were wearing back then.
Sparkykc124@reddit
I had a crush on the “hottest girl in school”. She was dating a senior when we were freshmen. When they broke up a couple years later I talked her in to going on a date with me, but couldn’t close the deal. A few years later when we were out of high school she drunk-called me needing a ride at 2am. I picked her up and she wanted to go to my place. We ended up fucking, but it sucked. I chalked it up to being drunk, took her out the next week, fucked again with the same results. Not sure why, but we just didn’t click.
Immediate_Video_7870@reddit
Same exact experience, but my hottest girl in my high school liked Lagerfeld.

According to young people (20's and early 30's) popular fragrances from the 90's are considered "vintage". Its hard for me to imagine sometimes.

Yeah, the funny thing is I don't even remember buying it I am pretty positive my parents just got it for me. I was 14 in 88'.
The cologne game back then was pretty funny, I don't think I have worn any since I was in my 20s lol.

No cologne as we would be playing Dungeons and Dragons in friends basement. This may come as a shocker to many but the lack of cologne was due to the fact that if a girl had mistakenly wandered in we would have died from a collective heart attack.
mystery_biscotti@reddit
I didn't officially play until 1990, but wore Xia Xiang on those days. Helped make my parental units' smoking habits less noticeable to my friends. My mom bought it for me for Christmas of 1987. I was not a girly girl but found perfume practical in social situations.
Funny enough, I (one of three girls in our friend group of 8 kids) was the one to suggest we play D&D! Man, I miss The Group but I'm never gonna wanna move back to the Midwest.
Spreadeaglebeagle44@reddit
Oh wow...a true unicorn. A female RPG'er!
Oddly enough there seems to be much less of a stigma these days and it seems female RPG'ers are much more common. In the late 80's and 90's admitting you played D&D was only nearly tantamount to admitting NAMBLA membership.
I actually credit my involvement with RPGs from a very young age with an advanced reading level, research skills and adeptness with functional mathematics. Thankfully the Satanism inherent in D&D never took hold.
OldDude1391@reddit
I work with a 30 year old women who is big into D&D. I told her I had first edition TSR books and she was excited. Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master guide, etc. Bought them in the early 80s in middle school. I didn’t realize people were still playing.
Moongdss74@reddit
Have you not heard of Critical Role? This group of D&D players who have made a pretty nice career playing on Twitch and YouTube. They even have an animated series about their 1st campaign. They've spawned a while new generation of players
OldDude1391@reddit
No I have not heard of it. All I know about Twitch is my teenage grandson told me it’s where people go to watch other people play video games. Lots more to life than staring at a screen.
mystery_biscotti@reddit
I know a group that still uses AD&D rules. They have for the last 40-ish years.
Moongdss74@reddit
Masochists. THAC0 was the bane of my existence

Ah, a fellow former second edition player! Nice!
This particular group I'm thinking of is still 1st edition all the way.
CKA3KAZOO@reddit
Sadly, I can't tell if you're being facetious.
Spreadeaglebeagle44@reddit
The Satanist panic in the late 80's was real. They were apparently everywhere and D&D was thought to be a vehicle for it.
I was self aware enough even as a twelve year old to realize it was total bullshit. So yes I am being facetious.
CKA3KAZOO@reddit
Oh, yes! I remember it viscerally, being a D&D player from East Texas. I learned how to play the game in 1979, when I was in the 7th grade.
That was when I learned that an idea can be complete bullshit and still affect people deeply.

Poison, Sung, Oscar de la Renta, or Giorgio. My four favourites to this day! Uffff that smell still turns me on something fierce
Dolly-Pardon_Me@reddit
I recently bought a vintage, new, unopened box of Poison.
Opening it was like going in a time machine, it was wild.
(They still sell it, but it is reformulated and doesn't "hit" the same. There is something in the original formula, that is like honey- it doesn't ever go bad. Most vintage perfume turns and gets gross. This doesn't. The immediate smell/ memory thing kicked in, big time.)
.

Any-Perception3198@reddit (OP)
My men’s swoon cologne is a light touch of Fahrenheit. The notes shouldn’t work and it takes a certain type of man but DAY-UM.
Comedian70@reddit
I switched from Drakkar to Fahrenheit in 1989, and I’ve never used anything else since.
I have just a little bit of “damn dirty hippie” buried under all the ‘retired’ goth/heavy metal/stoner rock exterior so over the years I worked out a scent which is altogether “me”. There’s a specific scented oil a friend makes which I’ll dot myself with after a shower and a quick spray of Fahrenheit. I use a heavily woodsy-floral-spicy herbal conditioner, and post shower I add a drop of Majmua oil to the leave-in conditioner before I rub that in my hair.
That’s been the basic formula for 30 years or so. My wife loves how I smell (and so do I), but before we started dating I lost a lot of hoodies and shirts over the years to dates and short term relationships.
DangerKitty555@reddit
That sounds amazing! Bless y’all that let us take your clothes (within reason of course). I’m not too proud to admit I’ve done because it makes me feel safe and protected if I wear my lovers clothes. Like they’re close to me even if they can’t be there physically..
DangerKitty555@reddit
Definitely agree it involves a certain type of man but also the smell is such a strong, sensual thing for moi. I can be minded my own business and if He walks by and I catch a whiff it’s like a insta-tingle between my legs. So powerful!

Depending on the time of the year I was either in MI, cruising gratiot, meeting my future ex-husband. House parties. Boat parties. Much more innocent. Or I was in Florida, cruising the Ft Lauderdale strip (way too young), bonfire parties out just before the swamps started, sitting on the beach late at night with friends, underage dance clubs, house parties… and a bunch of other things I was way too young to be doing that none of my friends in MI had any clue about.
I’m going to see if I can find that shampoo…

No perfume, because my mom was "sensitive to smells". Maybe she was, idk. Not going to speculate, but as a result, we were not allowed to use anything scented. (Funny because as she got older and needed skilled nursing, they used all kinds of scented products on her and she never said a word.. did she lose her sense of smell? I don't think so, because she always smelled any kind of food that was in the room.

I tell my mom I'm sleeping over at Nickie's, she tells hers she's sleeping at mine. We go to Kevin's who's parents are out of town and is having a massive party. We drink creme de menthe and I smoke cigarettes for the first time.
I am wearing white musk from the body shop.
I'm only 13. 😳

Playing a gig (rock/funk/metal bass player) or going to a show. Other than the Pantene in my long curly hair or the deodorant, my primary scent would be the leather jacket that I wore, which had that amazing heavy metal scent: leather, smoke, sweat, life.

I was 23 in 1988 (very early GenXer here), and I sang in a top-40 band in those days, so I would have been entertaining you, if you were over 21. My bleached blonde hair was teased to its highest point, I was wearing cool, wild clothes from Contempo Casuals or 5-7-9, and I spritzed myself with Fendi. I liked it because it was more woody and spicy than sweet and flowery.
These days I can’t stand perfumes and scented sprays. They all smell fake and chemical to me.

Patchouli oil and no I didn’t smoke pot. I just loved that scent. I’d use a single drop on one wrist and then rub my wrists together. When I was stressed, I’d smell my wrist and feel better. My dad hated it though so I couldn’t wear it if I was going to be in the car with him.

Obsession! I'd go to the perfume counter at Nordstrom's or The Bon Marche and get the little sample vials they used to hand out and make that shit last as long as I could. Rinse, repeat.
I also had a weird affection for Liz Taylor's Passion. My Mom had a bottle and I'd wear it every now and again in my younger years, smelling like an old lady at 16.

My grandmother would get me and my 7 male cousins a bottle of Stetson every year for Christmas. She loved how it smelled and thought we would too. We had so much of it just piled up, but never had the heart to tell her.
One year, we were doing family Christmas and all 8 of us had a gift from her in the exact shape and size of a Stetson package, so as a joke, we all waited to open those until the end, then made a big show of trading with each other and then acting surprised that we all got Stetson. 🤣🤣

I was in the Army, stationed on the E-W German border.
So, it was acid washed 501s, some sort of band or Hoorah t-shirt, and Vans. Heading to one of the local German bars. Until the last one closed at 3:30 AM.
Then, taxi/walk back to the barracks and put on our PTs for 0530 PT formation.
