Do People Say DNT, SRT, PGBT, Or No?

when you’re referring to these highways, do you literally say the full form of these highways or abbreviate them?
thecobra42@reddit
If you said any of those to me I wouldn’t have a clue what you were talking about.
CycloneCowboy87@reddit
It’s The Tollway, 121, and George Bush. Not DNT and not “the Bush” no matter what anyone else tells you
whip_lash_2@reddit
I can accept DNT but don't use it myself, and I usually just go with "the Bush", but I'm old. I don't think I've ever heard "SRT" except maybe once or twice in a traffic report.
MarthaGail@reddit
I use DNT and the Tollway interchangeably. I recently started saying peegeebeetee because it’s fun.
9bikes@reddit
>The Tollway, 121, and George Bush
Correct. "LBJ" and "635" used interchangeably. I was once very confused by a tourist looking for "The Johnson Freeway" and told him that I'd never heard of that road.
.
Mr_Grabs@reddit
OGs use LBJ
Snobolski@reddit
Down on Harry Hines as for El BJ
rex_lauandi@reddit
This is the way.
Im not sure why, but I’ve lived all over north Dallas in between these three roads and this is the default nomenclature across the entire region.
There are some younger folks that’ll say “DNT” or “Sam Rayburn” for those, but those are newer names and not as common as “The Tollway” and “121.”
9bikes@reddit
>Woodall Rogers
That one is just "Woodall" to a lot of us.
Snobolski@reddit
W-rod
rex_lauandi@reddit
I think some of these names harken back to the days of morning radio traffic reports. I can still hear in my memory a lady saying, “there’s a stalled vehicle on 30 westbound at the fair park exit with delays backing up to dolphin road.”
So for me thinking of Woodall Rogers, I’m betting they used that longer name back then. But that’s just my guess!
andrew_702@reddit
As someone who spends a good chunk of time south of the airport, I say Sam Rayburn to differentiate between it and the non-toll section of 121, and i say DNT to avoid confusion with the many other tollways in DFW.
rex_lauandi@reddit
Yeah, it makes sense if you’ve moved in after there were other tollways, but the DNT was “the tollway” before Bush or 121 got their tolls.
Also, it might just be the elitism of the Park cities, Preston Hollow, and north Dallas that their toll way is “THE” tollway! 😂
214forever@reddit
Funnily enough, I think I’ve only used LBJ on the portion between 35 and 75, the rest is always 635
Same with Central: if I use it, it’s south of 635. Everything north is just 75
aprince12@reddit
This!
NecessaryViolenz@reddit
My dad still says "the Bush" and sounds like Hank Hill. He's still stuck in the mentality that it's brand new, and he will use it for every possible trip to "avoid all that crazy driving around Dallas." He will literally take GWB to Irving from Kaufman County.
worstpartyever@reddit
Your poor dad
YaGetSkeeted0n@reddit
Is he though? PGBT has smooth pavement and the traffic never seems as awful as 635, 30, etc... might still take longer but it's a lot less unpleasant!
Principle_Dramatic@reddit
George Bush used to be deserted because it was only good for going to the airport or a Rangers game.
thephotoman@reddit
I mean, that's still the primary use, but there are more people from Plano/Garland/Sasche/Wylie commuting to the airport area now.
And the connection at the tollway leads it to the Legacy area, which is starting to get some commuter traffic.
75 is 75 south of George Bush and Central north of it. I blame living in Plano for too long now.
Consistent_Reward@reddit
If anything, that use of 75 is backwards, given that 75 in Dallas is either North Central or South Central Expressway, depending on which side of downtown you're on.
75 should be 75 north of Dallas until it merges with US 69 up north.
That being said, I call it Central all the way up to the 121 merge.
Principle_Dramatic@reddit
Prior to 2005, there were two independent sections, and the part from 35 to 635 didn’t exist so it was particularly useless.
thephotoman@reddit
Oof.
But now I have to ask: is there a reason DART doesn't do phased builds? It might have made a lot of their projects happen faster.
Principle_Dramatic@reddit
In practice they have. Blue and red lines opened first and then got extended in waves. Orange and green lines opened later after the extensions.
NecessaryViolenz@reddit
Nah, old dudes love shit like that.
OnPaperImLazy@reddit
Did you know that part of 75 right about where 190 intersects it is renamed after Congressman Sam Johnson, making it the "Sam Johnson Highway." So the 190/75 interchange is literally where The Bush meets The Johnson. You're welcome.

thephotoman@reddit
Exxon must love your dad.
DFWRailVideos@reddit
I grew up with it being called either 190 or The Bush. DNT was always called The Tollway (my grandfather once said Dallas Parkway), and nobody ever said Sam Rayburn.
thephotoman@reddit
The only time I say "DNT" is when I'm giving my out-of-towner parents directions, because that's what is most visible on the signs in most locations.
I mean, I write it as DNT, but it's pronounced "The Tollway".
um_i_got_a_question@reddit
also, to add, Loop 12 is called "Loop 12" or "Northwest Highway." I've heard some out of towners call it 12 and it just grates on my ears
Tiger_Miner_DFW@reddit
Loop 12 and Northwest Highway are different routes - they just happen to be coterminous along the northern part of Loop 12. I always say Northwest Highway for the northern part where it shares a roadway with Loop 12, but I say Loop 12 for the other portions.
pltkcelestial18@reddit
Ooo this is helpful. I mentioned something about this on the other post about interstates. I live by Northwest Hwy/Loop 12 and 75 and never know what to call it.
Tiger_Miner_DFW@reddit
Loop 12 turns south off of the roadway it shares with Northwest Hwy just west of 35 on the northwest side of Dallas, and goes south - that's where Loop 12 is a full freeway. From there, Northwest Highway continues west, and shares the roadway with TX Spur 348, which starts there, and then both Northwest Highway and Spur 348 end when they merge into TX 114.
truth-4-sale@reddit
I just use "161" for the Bush Tollway. It may not be correct, but that works for me.
insta-kip@reddit
Yeah it’s 190 near me, so that’s what I’ve always called it.
truth-4-sale@reddit
Same reason I call it 161. That part is near me!!
TransportationEng@reddit
190 is only the frontage roads on the eastern side of 35E.
insta-kip@reddit
But the whole thing was originally going to be called 190. So I’ve never gotten in the habit of calling it Bush.
arlenroy@reddit
I'm the same way, it depends on what part of the road I'm on, that's what I call it. I'll call it 190 if I'm driving to Wylie, but I'll call it George Bush if I'm going to the airport. The North Dallas Tollway is just The Tollway, 635 Express is the 635 Tollway. I've heard a few people call George Bush the Bush, like "shoot down the Bush to such and such is only 20 minutes". It doesn't bother me what people call it, you pretty much know what they mean.
Fun-Consequence-161@reddit
Isn’t it 190, though?
TransportationEng@reddit
Only the frontage roads are SH 190 east of 35E
truth-4-sale@reddit
It is 190, but no like to say "190" !!!
PureTank0@reddit
It's the Bushway! 😀
Zogg44@reddit
We often call it that lol.
belladonna_81@reddit
the only time i say "dnt" is when an outsider doesnt know what im talking about when i say "the tollway"
hanginwmrpark@reddit
This is it. There is no other way.
RandomRageNet@reddit
I frequently call PGBT "Puh-gibbit" but I recognize that no one else does this and it is solely for my own amusement.
Vig_2@reddit
I call George Bush, “The Turnpike” or “Bush” and have never had a single person second guess it.
meanie_tomato_panini@reddit
Tollway, 121, George Bush or Pugbutt (depending on who I'm speaking to, on going joke based on something an old boss' kid said).
Few-Leadership7674@reddit
I wish we still just had the Tollway (DNT) & the Turnpike (I-30 between Dallas & Ft. Worth).
Consistent_Monk_4018@reddit
I’m trying to get ‘The Bushway’ to catch on, but so far, no luck.
Fit_Ad4408@reddit
I’m new here so I say all of those. I also call it “The 75” “The 635” and whatever else. Most people seem to hate me here.
pamkabam@reddit
“Toll road” lol
meleant@reddit
Funny enough, that’s what I call the DNT. Grew up with it as the only tolled roadway in Dallas and even with so many more now, I am not sure I’ve ever intentionally used another toll road in the area as I just don’t have anything that takes me out to the other ones.
pamkabam@reddit
Same here! Every now and then I have to take 121 but even then it’s still colloquially “the toll road” haha
jillsvag@reddit
Which one?
pamkabam@reddit
All’um
Consistent_Reward@reddit
Gawd, as long as somebody doesn't bust out with "North Dallas Tollway", I'm good.
Codee33@reddit
The Tollway, 121/Sam Rayburn, Bush.
Stophes@reddit
Slow autobahn(35), fast autobahn (tollway), unsafe autobahn(75), and the autobahn (635 tunnels)
ExitTheHandbasket@reddit
I've been in Dallas since 1991. The Tollway, 121, The Bush. But never ever "the 35" or "the 121" or other Cali tripe.
OnPaperImLazy@reddit
The Tollway, 121, 190, 635, Central, 35, 30. If someone is confused by these, I'll clarify with "Dallas North Tollway", "Sam Rayburn", "Bush", "LBJ", 75, I35, I30. I have never in my long years of life heard someone refer to them as DNT, SRT, or PGBT.
fanoftom@reddit
No to all of these but I definitely call 635 LBJ.
ObiWanUrHomie@reddit
For PGBT, I’ll sometimes call it the Pug Butt 🤭
Frosty-Alternative46@reddit (OP)
💀💀💀💀💀💀
willmel@reddit
My wife has termed PGBT as Pig Butt, and that's what we use for it. I stick with the tollway for DNT, and still just call it 121.
SadAdministration438@reddit
That's a first lol.
November77@reddit
SRT = Stevie Ray Tollway
SadAdministration438@reddit
My first thought for SRT is the Demon car haha.
weightofzero@reddit
100%
cluelessinlove753@reddit
Things I say. - DNT and Tollway - 35 (to refer to 35E. 35W is not a part of my life), Stemmons (only the part S of NW Hwy, although I know that’s not technically the full extent) - 75, Central - 635, LBJ - George Bush, PGBT - NW Hwy (I have never said “Loop 12”) - 30 - Woodall Rodgers - 121 - 114
Beginning-Olive-3745@reddit
I always say PGBT and LBJ with a valley girl accent peg geh beh teh! El beh geh! My wife hates it when I do that😁
Glad_Air8204@reddit
I say DNT, Sam Rayburn, Bush/George Bush
Fattymaggoo2@reddit
No one says the bush lmfao
oakleafwellness@reddit
The only one I can think of I have used abbreviations was LBJ and I avoid that one at all cost. I hated that bridge coming from Denton off of 35. Way too dang tall for my height liking.
Joseph10d@reddit
Have you tried 75 NB to 635 WB or 161 SB to 183 EB?
OddSand7870@reddit
DNT - The Tollway SRT - 121 190 - either Bush or 190 75 - either 75 or Central 635 - either 635 or LBJ 35 - either 35 or Stemmons
Joseph10d@reddit
I use Dallas North Tollway, 121, and 161/190
Hawkline@reddit
Dallas international speedway, 121 premium edition, ripoff road
madster40@reddit
Tollway, 121, Bush Turnpike (east-west part), 161 (going south)
AngryyFerret@reddit
this right here
Fun-Consequence-161@reddit
TIL Bush’s highway number changes going south.
Angry-Alien@reddit
I say "puh guh buh tuh" then my parter does the tune to manamana
DarienLambert@reddit
I jokingly sometimes say pug butt.
DaSilence@reddit
DNT, SRT, PGB, LBJ...
Though I use 121 interchangeably with SRT. Depends on who I'm talking to.
earthworm_fan@reddit
DNT, 121, 190, etc
Ok-Cricket2034@reddit
Tollways are the only “The” around here. It’s “The Tollway” and “The Bush”
masterB0SHI@reddit
Some people do say DNT, not so much the others
SameSadMan@reddit
Stemmons
November77@reddit
Points awarded for originality.
bad_syntax@reddit
I say tollway, 121, and 190. Lived in DFW since I got out of the army in 2005, was here 97-01 before that.
timmy166@reddit
121, 635, 75, 35 Gang rise up!
Surlyllama23@reddit
It's so much less confusing! I've lived here the majority of my life but still couldn't tell you which is Walton Walker. Everyone I know uses the numbers, too.
And it will always be 190! That's what it was when it was being built.
Tiger_Miner_DFW@reddit
They don't say the letters. Usually they say The Tollway, 121, amd George Bush. I'm in the minority of people who says Sam Rayburn, because the inconsistency of saying George Bush but not Sam Rayburn bugs me.
Viper_ACR@reddit
I do.
fivemagicks@reddit
I call PGBT "Dubyuh."
sarcasticrichard@reddit
even though it's named for his dad? confusing.
fivemagicks@reddit
Big Internet W for you today.
blepharon@reddit
I call it the Texas Autobahn
Kind_Strike_9026@reddit
Toll road (dnt) 190 (bush) and 121……DNT is the original tollroad years (decades) before the other two were even a thought, so it’s been hard to change it in my mind to dnt
TransportationEng@reddit
Always have.
PureTank0@reddit
• The Tollway (because, at one point in the not too distant past, it was THE local toll road, excluding the one that bisected DFW Airport).
• 121
• The Bushway (admittedly, this may just be a nickname my wife & I utilize, but it'll take off 😆).
YaGetSkeeted0n@reddit
Transplant here, I call them DNT, 121, and The Bush Turnpike myself.
EmperorCoolidge@reddit
DNT, 121, Bush for me
tyler_russell52@reddit
The DNT, Sam Rayburn, Bush.
BCMBCG@reddit
