Anyone have recovery tips following deviated septum surgery?

I had surgery yesterday to fix a deviated septum, fixing an issue I thought I’d had since birth. But the surgeon said at some point I’ve broken my nose and split the cartilage down the middle causing it to fan out blocking one side of my nose. Not surprising, I was a fairly accident prone kid.
He stitched the cartilage back together and fitted splints in each nostril that’ll be removed next week. Wasn’t able to get much sleep last night, it’s not overly painful, more uncomfortable. I’m hoping when the splints are out it’ll be a bit easier. I’m to start saline flushes on Saturday, 3 times a day for 3 months!
For those you you who have had similar, how was it for you? Any tips for easing/aiding recovery?
Cheers

Did you have the operation done on the NHS or privately? I have a deviated septum and I was wondering how easy it is to get it fixed on the NHS or if I'd have to pay for it privately. Did you just go to your GP and ask about it?

NHS. My GP started a new digital triage system so was able to report it there and got referred through to see the specialist.
I has taken almost a year from when I first got seen until my op so no doubt it would have been quicker private. But as it’s something f I’ve had for decades I wasn’t it any rush.

Thank you for the information :-) I think I've had it my whole life so don't mind there being a long wait list, it'd just be nice to not be constantly blocked up!

I had this, pulled a stitch accidentally and now I have a hole that whistles. Be careful. Surgeou6says he fd it up to be fair who knows
BryOnRye@reddit (OP)
Oops. Hopefully it’s not too loud of a whistle for you!

Most days it's OK but some days it's so loud

My mate had a similar operation to me but his stitches reopened. Got rushed to hospital because he was losing so much blood. Nasty.

Had a septorhinoplasty when I was younger. Wait until you start the sinus rinses, prepare yourself for what is hiding in there.
archangel12@reddit
I didn't have the rinses at all.

Haha, thanks for the warning.

They took the packing out the same day of the operation, it was like a clown pulling hankies out of a hat.
It'll hurt for a week or so and your nose will create big bogeys that are an exact cast of the inside of your nose so that's fun.
Other than that, take the painkillers and don't do any contact sport and you'll be fine.

Honestly my favourite bit was picking my nose after a few days. Pretty sure I bled way more than average as well so I was pulling some insane stuff out.

Nosepicker's dream. 😉

I’m already looking forward to being able to blow my nose again.
archangel12@reddit
Yeah. Be EXTREMELY careful blowing your nose for at least a month, maybe six weeks after.

OP marked this as the best answer, given by /u/Optimal_Collection77.
^(What is this?)
Optimal_Collection77@reddit
Id leave the plastic splints alone until the surgeon pulls them out. It's actually not painful in the slightest when they do it.
Other than that, do the nasel washes and you will feel much better in no time

That’s good to know. Thanks.
