Built a PC for my gamer girl fianceè's 30th birthday but it didn't go so well.
Posted by FunNefariousness6980@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 271 comments
Long story short: My fianceè is big into gaming and has been playing on a trusty old rtx3070 legion 5 laptop for the past 4 years getting 20-30 fps at best. She plays heavily modded games and uses our 98 inch tv that has a port to support 120 Hz @4K.
Built her a PC for her 30th hoping to bring more enjoyment. The build is as follows:
Ryzen 9 9950X3D Rtx 5090 Aorus Master ICE X870E Aorus Pro Ice Motherboard Corsair Dominator DDR5 6400 MHz - 4 x 48GB Samsung 9100 Pro 2TB - 1x Samsung 990 Evo Plus 2TB - 3x Asus ROG Strix 1000w Platinum PSU Aorus Waterforce X II 360 ICE AIO Lian Li Strimers for MB, CPU and GPU 10 x Lian Li Infinity Fans - 4x exhausts/6x intakes Hyte Y70 Ifinity Touch case ID-Cooling Frost x45
After everything has been assembled the PC would fire up, case and GPU fans spinning and lighting up, RGB at the motherboard turned on, AIO display would turn on but no monitor signal - regardless of whether HDMI is plugged in to GPU or MB. Red CMOS light on MB lights up at the DRAM led and lots of random numbers were displayed.
Tested all the configurations, took out second and fourth RAM stick counting from CPU, then took out first and third and not a thing changed. Eventually I let it run for about two hours and it finally displayed BIOS. Managed to install windows but even after that was done PC would take ages to boot - between 5 and 15 minutes. RAM was running on 3600 MHz and although I didn't expect 6400Mhz out the box it's still a bit slow.
Any idea what am I doing wrong?
Windows is installed on 9100 Pro and with all the other components I would like it to boot instantenously. The red light on CMOS is gone but two digit display still displays different numbers at times.
I've taken a couple of pictures in case I'm missing something here.
Help! I'm running out of time before her birthday...
neobondd@reddit
Be sure to be on at least F4 BIOS. This board came out before the 9950X3D.

Remove 2 sticks and try again
RTideR@reddit
Is that a general rule of thumb for RAM sticks? Apologies for the dumb question!
My wife has 2 x 8 in her motherboard currently, but if we ever wanted to go 2 x 16, it sounds like we'd always want to replace the old ones, not add to them?
She's wanting to do some vtuber stuff which I know very little about, so I'm thinking ahead in case her PC has issues running it and streaming. I figure RAM will be one of the easier things to try upgrading first if needed.
Skote2@reddit
Expo/xmp don't tend to work very well on 4 sticks. It doesn't matter what generation you're on. More memory usually means slower speeds. That being said, most people don't use crazy high EXPO profiles, they'll use something really reasonable that will probably be stable. It's most important to have DIMMs that match for the best chances of having memory that will like high speeds.
From the sounds of it the guy in this post had to wait an unreasonably long time for memory training because it's an unreasonable amount of memory.
_asciimov@reddit
There is tons of BAD INFO about ram on this sub.
AMD and Intel both have issues with DDR5, for reasons beyond the scope of this post.
You can safely put 4 sticks of DDR5 ram into the machine. lt wont blow up, it will boot. It may not run at expo speeds, some people can manually clock the ram up to run at expo speed. Likely you will take some speed penalty for the 4 sticks of ram.
How much does that ram speed matter, kinda depends on what you are doing, and what speds you get from 4 sticks. Some people get bent out of shape for any penalty.
If I were you, I'd test the machine with both the new ram and old ram, then just with the new ram. If you can't live with the speed difference stick to the new ram only.
ssuper2k@reddit
Mainly for DDR5 ..
RTideR@reddit
Noted! She has DDR4, but that's good to know regardless. Thank you!
CompSciBJJ@reddit
Yeah, that's an absurd amount of RAM unless you're trying to run a bunch of VMs. The 9950X3D is also more of a productivity CPU than a gaming one. Buddy pretty much just went "more expensive = better, always" and built something not at all optimized for his purposes (it'll work, but he could have spent less and got a better PC for him).
More dollars than sense
rustypete89@reddit
Hey! You are wrong. AMD specifically put the X3D cache on the 9950X3D to make it excellent at gaming as well as productivity. It is very easy to look up CPU benchmark tables online and seee that this CPU trades blows with the 9800X3D across all major titles, and is in fact ahead in some!
Please stop saying wrong things online when they are easy to disprove! If you're gonna be wrong at least get more creative!
JTP1228@reddit
There is 0 reason for a 9950X3D over a 9800X3D to game on a 98 inch TV lol
rustypete89@reddit
That is not what I was mainly arguing! You hyperfocused on one sentence to try and have a gotcha moment. Hope your reading comprehension improves!
JTP1228@reddit
You had a gotcha moment with the previous poster and called them wrong, when your statement was not accurate.
CompSciBJJ@reddit
I could be wrong, I just assumed the same held true for this generation as the last, where the 7950X3D wasn't as good for gaming as the 7800X3D
rustypete89@reddit
Yeah, I'm telling you that you're wrong and I also indicated it's very easy to see that by looking online. I know, because I've looked at the benchmarks myself. The 9900X3D is ever so slightly worse than the 9800X3D at gaming (still a top 3 gaming chip for the record), the 9950X3D is basically equal with the 9800X3D.
There is enough wrong information out there about tech products without people adding fuel to the fire by repeating very easily disprovable things out of ignorance. Respectfully.
Btw, I think you might be holding a wrong opinion about the 7950X3D as well. I wasn't looking for it previously but going back and referencing benchmark charts now, I actually see it trading blows with the 7800X3D pretty evenly. What is your source for that info?
Hijakkr@reddit
Even after reading this, I'm struggling to see how they were wrong. Two CPUs, which are, in your words, "basically equal" in gaming, and one costs over $100 more than the other. They said 'Buddy pretty much just went "more expensive = better, always" and built something not at all optimized for his purposes'. In OP's case, it was "more expensive = the same", which is therefore not optimized. Certainly not seeing anything egregious enough for multiple long comments outright saying "Hey! You are wrong." and "Yeah, I'm telling you that you're wrong".
rustypete89@reddit
Honestly, it sounds like you got intimidated by the length of the replies and didn't read all of one or both posts because I think I explained Peter clearly why I pointed out that he's wrong and went into detail about why he's wrong. Wasn't even mean about it. What's making you grumpy about this?
Hijakkr@reddit
I didn't "get intimidated" by the length of your reply, I saw the arrogance in your introduction of both and how you never quite refuted the main point, which was not that the 9800 is "better" but that it's a much better value proposition. You can point out someone's mistake without being an arrogant prick about it, but you failed on all counts.
rustypete89@reddit
There isn't enough information to conclude she won't use the productivity advantages of the chip. Also, his assertion was that the 9800X3D is objectively better for gaming, which is only true where price to performance matters - in context of someone buying a $3000 GPU price to performance does not matter between these two CPUs. If it were a 9900X3D I'd not be making this argument as it loses in benches.
Hope that helps. And I type quickly so don't let the length of the comments invalidate the argument for you.
Scarabesque@reddit
That is a fair caveat though. When the 7950X3D was first released it required Process Lasso to park the cores properly, and did nerf quite some initial reviews/benchmarks. Windows now indeed does a decent job in game mode, but it's not hard to find people who still have issues with core parking.
9950X3D is indeed technically mildly (~1%) faster overall, but its increased price and the occasional hassle with core parking makes it a worse buy for a gaming system.
Great for hybrid use of course.
rustypete89@reddit
So it was fair back then but not now. Got it.
I've got a 9900X3D and have had no core parking issues. You are more likely to hear about complaints than people having no issues when discussing things like this. I doubt a significant percent of users deal with the issue at this point.
We are not talking about price to performance here. This is a guy who bought a 5090. Cost is not relevant. We also don't know anything about her use case outside of gaming so it's wrong to conclude he should have gotten the 9800X3D based on the evidence at hand. Maybe she does 3D modeling as well, who knows.
The point is, crapping on this guy who bought a 5090 for getting is girlfriend a 9950X3D to go with it is ludicrous. He did fine. Core 9 Ultra and maybe we're onto something. But he didn't, enough said.
goodnames679@reddit
That was the 7900x3D, the 7950x3D was actually roughly as good / sometimes better than the 7800x3D. If you disabled one CCD it essentially became a 7800x3D with better binning and would straight up win in every title.

The memory controller. It should still run fine around 5600 tho, it's not a big deal ztbh
Apprehensive-Ad4063@reddit
She doesn’t need that much ram anyway just only use 2 slots. 1 and 3
AJ1666@reddit
Not sure why you're getting donvoted but...
The memory controllers currently struggle to run XPO with 4 sticks. It's basically too much for them and they are stuck at base speed. You could probably get 6400mhz with 2 sticks. I'd suggest returning and getting appropriate x2 sticks. You can always get "dummy" ram so all slots look filled.

Big-Pineapple-9954@reddit
To answer the RAM question, the specs of the CPU stops you from getting full speeds with all 4 slots populated. AM5 CPUs is specked that way from AMD.
This is the memory configurations, and max native speeds for the 9950X3D, so this is before any EXPO is applied. With 4 slots populated you won't be able to use EXPO either, you can manually overclock it, but it is not adviced since it usually won't work that well. AM5 is better with 2 sticks if you want speed.
Max Memory Speed

That explains so much! I just presumed highest AMD CPU will cope with any RAM configuration... I appreciate that insight.
PassawishP@reddit
I have 4k60fps 43" TV as my monitor. Sitting distance is like normal monitor. Usually use only 32" 1440p in the middle of the screen as main workspace. And all the other space for Files Explorer or smth. Can't going back to normal monitor at all. The fact that I can open 3 pdf side by side without having to alt+tab millions of time is very nice.
But ngl if I got that much money I would go with the biggest 4k120fps I could find too. And, like, if it that big like you. I would set the TV 2m away from the desk and use it. Much less strain on the eyes in my opinion.
FunNefariousness6980@reddit (OP)
Thank you!
KFC_Junior@reddit
its a ddr5 issue and an am5 memory controller issue. am5 memory controller already struggles hitting 6400 and above normally, when you add an extra 2 sticks it just shits itself. intel just shits itself with 4 sticks (might be better on lga 1851 not sure) but you can actually run high speed
thesupremeDIP@reddit
AM5's memory controller(s?) can't cope with the higher frequencies of DDR5 when all four slots are populated
shball@reddit
It puts more strain on the memory controller, check the specs page for the 9950x3d, it should have the different max. speeds listed
bearhos@reddit
My 4090 is hooked up to a 83” C4 which does 144hz and it’s OLED. Why is using a pc with a tv bad? I’m not doing office work on it, that’s what my desk is for. I’d rather have the size for gaming
Archangel768@reddit
Not a problem. Your tv is fine..my lg c1 is more responsive than any gaming monitor I've owned. Not that I've owned a gaming monitor as premium as my oled tv though.
ImYourDade@reddit
Generally tvs have more input lag, or at least they used to idk how far tvs have come in that regard on the last 8 years since I bought my last one. But also if you're playing any competitive game bigger screens are generally worse as you'll lose focus on the edges of your screen where some important information is in a game like league of legends for example.
It depends on the games you play, really. I'd love to play some games on a big TV sitting on my couch, but I also play mostly competitive games so unless I wanna spend twice as much to have a good monitor and good TV it's just not worth it for me personally. The other guys right, you don't have to justify your purchase as long as you're happy with it but that's why people normally don't use TVs for pc gaming, unless I'm missing some other reasons
sunqiller@reddit
OLEDS have instant response times regardless of the shell they're put in, but I have heard about the size dilemma before.
SarlacFace@reddit
Pixel response time is completely different from input lag, which is what TVs tend to struggle with. Especially if you're using KBM.
utkohoc@reddit
Input lag is a result of pixel response time and frame rate or did you think there is some magical third thing inside a tv that makes input laggy?
You said "it's completely different" then didnt elaborate further.
In what way is it completely different?
SarlacFace@reddit
Lmao confidently incorrect.
Pixel response times is how long it takes a pixel to go from grey to grey, while input lag is how long an input takes to reach output.
Input lag can be completely divorced from frame rate. You can have a rate in the hundreds but with bad input lag.
Framerate depends on the raw horsepower of your device while the response times have to do with how much processing it does which causes a small delay.
utkohoc@reddit
Input lag is a result of those things. It doesn't magically appear from nothing.
SarlacFace@reddit
Lmao I'm not reading your chatgpt wall of bullshit. I already explained it to you as simply as possible. If you still can't grasp it, that's on you.
Log2@reddit
It's about the processing the TV is doing that a monitor would not do.
kind_bros_hate_nazis@reddit
Many have videogame more tho as well. For most I don't think it's an issue tho
Ballerbarsch747@reddit
Well you get mostly massive lag and low Hz when comparing to a proper monitor, but hey, visual quality sure isn't why you spent the money for a 4099 right?
Running a GPU like this to a TV is like putting lung long tires on your Bugatti
bearhos@reddit
9.7ms of input lag is pretty darn good, no? There's a lot of tv's with bad input lag, this isn't one of them.
It's more like putting the best all-season tires on your Bugatti instead of track-only racing slicks. I'm leaving a tiny bit of performance on the table in exchange for comfort, flexibility, and quality.
No_Cardiologist735@reddit
Is input lag the same as latency? Apparently my OLED TV has 5-6.5ms latency at 120hz, is that good for a non-competitive gamer?
Starfield1976@reddit
There are some pretty good OLED TV’s out there these days. Neither lag nor low Hz are an issue.
kind_bros_hate_nazis@reddit
It's not bad. Don't mind the parrots
Apprehensive-Ad4063@reddit
People who play competitive games care about input lag which TV’s barely even report on. I think the LG C4 is kinda made for gamers so it’s probably the best choice if you’re going with a TV.
SantasWarmLap@reddit

Ashankura@reddit
Is this correct for the 7800x3d as well? I recently upgraded from 32 to 64 and when i googled there didn't seem to be any issues and it feels better atleast
insertadjective@reddit
AM5 with DDR5 has issues when all 4 slots are populated I believe. It can't hit the full speed. I swapped from 4 sticks to 2 sticks to hit the EXPO/DOCP advertised speed.
kind_bros_hate_nazis@reddit
It's a memory controller issue. It'll still run ok like 5000+ but not 6k
Big-Pineapple-9954@reddit
That is a processor issue though. Or not really an issue since AMD clearly specs it out for the AM5 CPUs that you wont hit expo speeds when you are using 4 RAM dimms.
Max Memory Speed 2x1R DDR5-5600 2x2R DDR5-5600 4x1R DDR5-3600 4x2R DDR5-3600
This is the max memory speed configuration of the 9950X3D, from AMD's site. It shows you wont get full speed with 4 dimms. Also worth mentioning, this is native speeds before EXPO.
Link for source: https://www.amd.com/en/products/processors/desktops/ryzen/9000-series/amd-ryzen-9-9950x3d.html
Scarabesque@reddit
That is the minimum guaranteed speed with 2dpc 2r.
These days even with four 2R DIMMs 3600 is really terrible. I run 4x48GB 6000cl30 EXPO stable on a 9950X with only tweaked voltages. This is on an MSI board though, which seem to be getting above average results with DDR5.
Having said that for a gaming PC 4 48GB DIMMs is pointless in any case, and will only mess with you.
Ashankura@reddit
Sadly 32gb keeps hitting max during star citizen so i upgraded. Guess i will have to keep an eye on my ram for some time

Drakoid@reddit
Well I guess you got the magic RAM lol. Is your configuration 4x16GB?
Ashankura@reddit
Yea it's 4x16. Could still just be placebo though
machinegunmonkey1313@reddit
I have 4x16 DDR5 6400 running with no issues, full Expo, on my 9800x3D. If it works, it works. But all 4 slots being full is typically less stable on AM5.
Intelligent_Bison968@reddit
I would also keep 4 stick, no point in buying new ram just for little but higher speed. It won't probably won't make noticable difference.
Ashankura@reddit
Yea im a little confused about the downvotes on the comment haha. Didn't want to spend 200 when 100 were enough to fix my "issue"
Intelligent_Bison968@reddit

GlowGreen1835@reddit
It gets to me as an IT guy, one less thing to troubleshoot. If something is lagging or stuttering, I don't want to have as part of my checklist every single time, "check RAM speed in task Manager and BIOS to make sure it didn't start badly and reduce speed"
chr0n0phage@reddit
2x32GB would have been the ideal solution.
chr0n0phage@reddit
4xDIMMS has never been suggested or recommended since AM5 launched. Never. If it’s working for you at EXPO/XMP speeds, you’re just lucky.

Drop 2 memory sticks. Only use 2nd and 4th slot. Turn on and wait. That first power-on can take an hour to teach the memory. Be patient. As long as the MB display is showing numbers and letters and not getting stuck for long, you're good.
Turbulent_Grape_2686@reddit
And I need to add that you really need to dig into the MB specs. You can't just buy a bunch of awesome parts, throw them together and expect it to work. For one, that 6400 m/t will only reach that speed on two sticks not four, as depicted in MB specs. Does your MB even support that processor? Did you fill up all your m.2 slots? Well that last one might be a gen5, which when filled with an m.2 will disable the bottom pcie slot. Things like that. A for effort, but please do more research.
FunNefariousness6980@reddit (OP)
Top m.2 slot is gen 5 and I've put 9100 Pro there to utilise the speed. All three others are Gen4.
Turbulent_Grape_2686@reddit
If you are absolutely sure of proper connection spots and compatible components, then you might want to just let it do it's thing for a bit. The first time I powered my new build on I was really worried bc nothing was happening other than lights coming on. But when I saw the MB code display running through hex numbers, ok, just chill out, stop messing with it and just let it do it's thing. It really took 50 minutes to teach the memory before the bios came up on screen. Good luck to you.

that cpu for 120hz lol
FunNefariousness6980@reddit (OP)
Why not?
Content-Fee-8856@reddit
Everything is going to be GPU bound at 4k unless you are talking microsoft flight sim or tarkov streets, in which case a 7800/9800x3d is going to do better gaming-wise, but even then
x3d CPUs are great for bringing lows up a lot when you are 240+hz in some games like CS2, tarkov, etc. They make the biggest difference on 1080p and fps is already 500+. You could get a much cheaper CPU and probably not bench lower at all in games.
FunNefariousness6980@reddit (OP)
Interesting, I wouldn't have ever thought anybody would care about more than 120 fps, surely your eye doesn't have a 120Hz refresh rate... But then again I'm not really into gaming. Interesting take.
Content-Fee-8856@reddit
The cells in the eye don't all send nerve impulses to the visual cortex at the same time in a strobing fashion in the same way that a monitor does. Because of that, the effective "hz" that a person can notice is actually potentially very high because our vision is functionally continuous. There are some studies on how high hz people can perceive, actually. You notice motion clarity the most in first person games.
FunNefariousness6980@reddit (OP)
I appreciate the insight, to be honest I wouldn't have even thought this is a thing! You learn everyday.

why do u have so much RAM ? 😭😭
TwilightFate@reddit
98 inch TV...?
Anyway, that's pretty much a NASA computer and I can immediately tell why it isn't running: The RAM. All of the newest Ryzen 9000-series are not designes to run four slots of RAM. 6400Mhz might also be a bit too fast, the sweet spot is 6000.
The memory controller on the CPU is probably overwhelmed with that amount of RAM coming from four slots at once.
Try putting only two RAM sticks into slots 2 and 4 from the CPU and see if it works better.
FunNefariousness6980@reddit (OP)
Yup you are 100% correct I left two sticks in and it runs steady 6000MHz. Will return the other two.
We met in high school and both work in healthcare.

The more RAM you have, the longer it will take to boot. You’re at 192GB when the average person is still on 16-32GB. Even 64GB would be plenty for a high end build. Using all four slots on an AMD system is also begging for instability. Get rid of two sticks and your system should boot in half the time and be stable at rated speeds.
Ani_95@reddit
Did not know that higher RAMs leads to higher boot times! Good to know. Thanks stranger!
saeekiicii@reddit
I’m happy you got it solved. I think your initial mistake, however, was to get Gigabyte parts😂. Jokes aside I’m happy for you!

Optimal_Ride_8788@reddit
I play skyrim with 700+ plus mods and 32GB 2x16 sticks of ram is more than enough for that
donut4ever21@reddit
My money is on the RAM sticks. You need two in the 2nd and 4th slots, set them to 5200 MHz and test before using the EXPO/XMP. Then you can go back and enable it.
parallacksgamin@reddit
The issue with the SSDs not showing up is likely you have to initialize them in windows. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/disk-management-in-windows-ad88ba19-f0d3-0809-7889-830f63e94405
BlckMlr@reddit
For the SSDs that aren't showing up in windows you need to format them using disk management, right click on the start menu and go to disk management you'll see them as unallocated storage, you need to format and assign them so Windows can see them.
dannyboii12345@reddit
For your ssd's to appear you just have to go into Disk Management, and right click on each of those drives and assign them a letter, then they will appear and you can format to your chosen file system.
xMiracle45@reddit
Did you update the bios? Some of the boats need an out of box box update for the newer AMD processors.
Agorar@reddit
You probably have to assign the m.2s via disk manager as they are currently not registered to your system and have no filesystem encoding on them. They are blank.
Just go into the search bar in windows type in disk manager and assign letters to the unassigned ssds.
FunNefariousness6980@reddit (OP)
My god this worked! I just presumed they would show up on their own 😂
StConvolute@reddit
Look up those 2 numbers that show up on the 2 digit display in your mobo manual. That'll likely give you some solid clues as to what it thinks is wrong.
My guess based on minimal info is either you're missing the extra CPU power in or your mobo needs a bios update to support the CPU.
Good luck man.
FunNefariousness6980@reddit (OP)
There were numbers for:
Ram fault CPU fault General fault
CPU has got two separate 8 pin cables plug into the back of the strimer.
I tried to quick flash bios update from gigabyte website - followed instructions but nothing hapoened and I'm still at F2 update (the oldest one) despite trying to flash f6.

Pesimyst@reddit
Did you remove the CPU and Ram when flashing? I had this exact same issue building a pc last night with a new Gigabyte motherboard. Also ensure the bios on the USB using to flash is from the correct version of the motherboard. Mine had a 1.1 revision and different bios files.
FunNefariousness6980@reddit (OP)
It is the correct version but I kept CPU and ram in place... I thought it was too much hassle to remove AIO but hey if it needs done it gets done.

Updating bios for gigabyte requires you rename the file to a very specific convention. They don’t mention it on their site only on YouTube it’s really stupid. If you haven’t already watch their YouTube video about bios flash and make sure you renamed the file correctly. It’s absurd they don’t just make the file name correct upon download but what are you gonna do.

Yep! GIGABYTE.bin iirc
I had simular issues with my B650E Elite Aorus X AX ice, did a week of troubleshooting, took it to a local shop and after 45 minutes he scraped some dirt off the RAM slots and it's worked perfectly after that.
FunNefariousness6980@reddit (OP)
That's my BIOS up to date now. Just flashed in manually rather than using the button on the mobo.
Gilles111@reddit
When I run your setup through a PSU calculator for just the CPU, GPU, RAM, M.2s and fans, I get to almost 1200W of usage. You put in more stuff so that system would use up to 1400W? With the 1000W PSU you put in, you'll never have the power to run the whole system on full speed. Best is to get a PSU with the capacity of your system matching \~80% of the PSU. So put in, at minimum, 1600W PSU but even better 1750W .
FunNefariousness6980@reddit (OP)
Good point actually, didn't consider that. What uses so much power? 5090 + 9950x3d at full TDP would be at 745 watts.
Gilles111@reddit
They do in basic config, standard they come with OC overclock on, so they take more. Also fans, AIO, M.2, RAM, etc. does take power. Best use a PSU calculator (like https://www.bequiet.com/en/psucalculator) to see how much the system does use.
FunNefariousness6980@reddit (OP)
Makes sense. Any particular symptoms I should expect if the power draw is too high? Other than obvious shutdown, instability when pushed hard?

If you're running dual channel, 3600 mhz equates to 7200 mhz. It's probably way faster than the memory's advertised speed 😆. Also, just as most users have suggested, I would just install two rams in the A2 and B2 slots, respectively.
Carlosa_chan@reddit
Did u download all the driver? I also had same problem slow to run, but as soon i downloaded driver its very fast.
JugadoraNinja@reddit
Actually I moved from intel to AMD.
The bios in the Qcode displays the CPU temperature. They are not codes if it shows you from 35-42ish sometimes 50 is the CPU temperature
The long boot is an AMD thing. Apparently it takes time to learn the memory. You can turn this off from the BIOS. Something with post memory state option. I forgot. But those two things were driving me crazy since my intel build didn’t do that.
thunderberker@reddit
Wayyyyy too much ram. Might actually be the #1 problem or maybe it’s running too fast for the processor or mobo, I’ve seen that a lot.
broccaaa@reddit
You need to flash the bios update because only a new version will support a 9950x.
bisaido@reddit
This may sound dumb, but are you using the TV or a computer monitor to boot up the computer? If you’re using the TV try plugging it into a different HDMI port.
Also, check your HDMI cable because some of them are directional.
dragon-ball-fanatic@reddit
For stability purposes 2 sticks or RAM is optimal. I would recommend getting rid of the current RAM setup and just buy two sticks of good quality RAM, 32 gigs is my recommend amount but since money is not a concern( you go king! Enjoy your money how you want to, don't let other's beat you down for it!) then a premium 32×2 kit is what you want. Once that's done, I'd suggest testing out slotting into 1st and 3rd slot. If that is unstable then 2nd and 4th slot. I had the exact same issue you had and it was fixed by placing both Ram sticks on the 2nd and 4th slot instead of the conventional 1st and 3rd slot. Talked with an IT friend of mine and he told me to just "try it" and it worked flawlessly. If you can't figure it out, swallow your pride and pay the premium to have it assembled if all else fails. Good luck and keep us updated on how'd it go!
(P.S you should be aware that 5090 cards are having issue with PSU cables burning up and being a general fire hazard, just....look into that.)
cancergiver@reddit
Have I just read correctly? 4x48gb?
GoatCheez666@reddit
Lots of good info here. I think your steps are:
Update bios.
Clear CMOS/BIOS and cold boot with 2 sticks and pop into bios
Enable expo/XMP, but then adjust your dram speed down to 3000/6000 instead of 3200/6400. Keep the expo/xmp timings though.
This should get you to a good baseline that is fast
Thenoobofthewest@reddit
Check your cpu for bent pins I had this where my ram couldn’t boot because of bent pins
FunNefariousness6980@reddit (OP)
Cpu hasn't got any pins it's all flat contacts
Thenoobofthewest@reddit
Not on the cpu itself the mobo pins for those contacts - can you upload a pic of them?
bargu@reddit
Did you just went to pcpartpicker and sorted by most expensive?
ViciousCombover@reddit
I have the same mobo and got the same error code.
It is fucking picky about ram.
Only use 2 sticks and make sure they’re in the right slots, look at the manual for the right dimms but it should be slots 2 and 4 (1 being the closest to the cpu). Swap out the sticks you have in different combinations until it works normally.
Get a 2x32 or 2x24 later instead.
Enable “context restore” and “power down” in the bios. That will stop the board from training the ram each time and making the post super long.
no6969el@reddit
Yeah I'm going to come here and second the expo issue. You can try to boot it and then leave it for like 30 minutes and it might actually boot otherwise just take two of them out and then you should be good. Not like you're going to be short for memory.
Akeshi@reddit
Slow boot-up times because of more RAM are a huge sticking point with me, it puts me right off AMD. It's instantaneous with Intel.

RecalcitrantBeagle@reddit
Really long boot times that do eventually reach the system sound indicative of the memory training that DDR5 does - really long boot times, especially the first one, are one of the issues of getting to the speeds DDR5 has gotten to. Typically, what you do is suffer through the first one, and then there's a setting called something along the lines of Memory Context Restore that saves that calibration for next time in most AM5 BIOS now - it's technically less stable, but for just gaming and such it's a pretty easy choice.
It sounds like you have a simultaneous problem with hitting your memory speeds as well, which means it might be defaulting to running at the bare minimum speeds after a couple of failed boot attempts. Did you enable XMP/EXPO in the BIOS? Most RAM comes with a default speed (often called its JEDEC speed) and then you have to turn on XMP/EXPO in the BIOS to hit its rated speed, since it's technically an overclock and they don't want you to get stuck if the rated speed doesn't work. The 4x48GB is actually going to hurt you here, though, because running 4 sticks, especially 4 high-density sticks, is much more intensive for the memory controller than two - which means you often need to drop to a lower speed for it to handle the load. So first, try it with just two sticks, turn on EXPO and Memory Context Restore in the BIOS, and see if that works. If so, add the other two sticks (or, I'll be honest, don't, 96GB is already laughably overkill for a gaming setup) and see if they can manage it as well.
FunNefariousness6980@reddit (OP)
Brilliant post, thank you. If I can't reach full speed with four sticks I will try with two. If that works I might as well return the other two. 96GB should suffice as you say although she does play games with multiple layered modes on them. I remember seeing ram usage well above 50 GB.
Thanks once again.
Zen-Swordfish@reddit
Yeah my 128GB takes like 15 minutes on boot every time I modify BIOS. Really fast after that but I'd turn it on and walk away for lunch.
chaddledee@reddit

adriaans89@reddit

FunNefariousness6980@reddit (OP)

Vexing@reddit

The_Sexy_quokka@reddit
I think the system just fills the RAM up with anything, a may as well use it philosophy, even if you'll never touch most of it. Might be wrong tho
fruitsdemers@reddit
Recalcitrantbeagle’s post has pretty much everything I wanted to say but to add on what he’s already mentioned, I’m also suspecting that you’ve bought a ddr5 kit for intel systems.
The memory chips on kits certified for intel and amd are largely the same and the main difference is that intel kits dont have an expo profile but xmp profiles certified on intel boards (that your motherboard can still read and load) which can be slightly too optimistic when running on amd’s more finicky memory controllers.
If you can get back into the bios, try setting 2 sticks to load their speed and timing profile, and if it reboots and works, you should turn on the “memory context context” option and count yourself lucky to have won the silicon lottery but if it refuses to run stable (cannot get past memory training or crashes and rebooting to bios instead of windows on restart), you’ll need to gradually lower the speed step by step until you find an option that is stable before locking in the values. Amd x3d chips of this generation lose negligible amounts of performance with memory speeds above 6000mtps so dont feel bad for downclocking a bit.
Also, keep in mind that it’s not unheard of that a newer bios update can introduce a regression to memory stability due to closing down on safety margins for what it considers stable. I’ve personally wasted an entire weekend, and bought 2 redundant DDR5 kits to diagnose the fact that an asus bios update made my computer go from perfectly stable to unable to boot.
Good luck.
ImpeccableMonday@reddit
This is a great reply, nice breakdown. RAM is 100% the issue here
devries6276@reddit
This is so hard to read
Swimming_Physics_283@reddit
I saw on YouTube somewhere before I put my am5 stuff together that you want the ram running at 6000mt/s, anything higher on x3d chips can cause that, but anything 6000 or lower is fine. According to them, 6000mt/s is the magic number for am5 components
Swimming_Physics_283@reddit
Edit: so try booting to bios and setting ram expo to 6000, see if that works, generally you can buy ram thats faster than what your cpu speeds ask for so long as you set them to run at the correct speed
Coffeeworld@reddit
Are you 100% sure the power supply is sufficient for everything you’ve got hooked up? I’m also curious if the motherboard can supply enough power to all of it too.
As others have stated, that amount of ram is complete overkill (and largely useless). If you’re fiancée is a data scientist working on some machine learning stuff or exceedingly large data sets it would come into play, but that would call for an additional GPU (or 3) as well I think.
q-milk@reddit
Just return it all, and start over. Whatever the reason, it is not worth your time.
MrBfJohn@reddit
Firstly, as others have said, you don’t want all 4 RAM slots filled, it just doesn’t play nice with Ryzen. Secondly, I’ve never had issues with none QVL RAM till I got moved up to AM5, so make sure the RAM you have is on the motherboards QVL.
nbaballer8227@reddit
I built my pc recently on am5 with 7800x3d and I had quite a bit of posting issues and other weird issues such and games freezing/crashing initially, laggy windows, and had to do quite a few hard shut downs/reboots. I did get to use it somewhat without issues from time to time but eventually after a week or so it would take a long time to post, upwards of 15-20 mins and eventually it stopped. I even switched out RAMs thinking they were the issue and while it worked the issues returned.
I eventually exchanged the motherboard (asus tuf) and all the issues went away. I only use two sticks of ram to get 64gb and I let it memory train each time but now it only takes about 30 secs. If all else fails, it could be a defective mobo.
satarius@reddit
I didn’t see anyone else ask yet-
You applied thermal paste to the CPU, right??
DerpDerper909@reddit
Oof, dude. I feel for you on this one - nothing worse than a dream build that won't cooperate when you're up against a deadline.
That 4x48GB kit is no joke, and honestly, 192GB of DDR5 is pushing even the 9950X3D's memory controller to its limits. The random numbers on the debug display and those brutal 5-15 minute boot times? That's your system struggling through memory training every single boot because it can't figure out stable timings for all that RAM.
First thing I'd try is getting into BIOS (since you managed it once) and enabling "Memory Context Restore" or whatever Gigabyte calls it on that board. This basically saves the successful memory training profile so your system doesn't have to go through this painful process every time. Also, if you haven't already, update that BIOS to the latest version - DDR5 support has gotten way better with newer BIOS releases.
Now, the RAM speed, don't stress too much about only hitting 3600MHz right now. With that much capacity, you're gonna have to work your way up. Try manually setting the DRAM voltage to 1.4V instead of leaving it on auto, and maybe bump it up to 4800 or 5200MHz before going for the full 6400. High-capacity kits are notorious for needing more conservative timings.
Here's what I'd do if I were in your shoes and running out of time: pull two of those sticks out temporarily and run just 96GB (still absolutely massive for gaming). Put them in slots A2 and B2, get everything stable and booting fast, then add the other two sticks back later when you have more time to mess with it. She's not gonna notice the difference between 96GB and 192GB for gaming anyway, hell, even 32GB is overkill for most games (I have 64gb I can’t blame you).
Also, make sure you've got the latest chipset drivers installed once Windows is up and running. AMD's been pushing out updates that help with memory compatibility.
The build itself is absolutely insane in the best way possible. Worst case scenario, like I said, just run half the RAM for now and she'll still have the most powerful gaming setup on the block. Good luck, man!
FunNefariousness6980@reddit (OP)
Thanks for your post. I agree that 96GB will most likely suffice so that's what I might end up doing if I'm unsuccessful in bringing up the speeds.
Two of her favourite games are criminally poorly optimised and layered with 10-20-30 different mods and I have seen ram usage on task manager well above 50GB.

Set the nvme you want that has windows as first boot.
Go to bios and turn this on Memory Context Restore → Enable.
Use 2 ram sticks. New amd chips dont like more than 2.

Swap out the 9100 as it could also be causing issues.
Disable start up apps. And debloat windows.

Double check to make sure you’ve installed the RAM in the correct slots, and that your cpu is making contact with your cooler. Those were my huge issues when I built mine
ju2au@reddit
When you install RAM, one needs to push down hard and hear a distinct and satisfying "click" sound.
Many RAM issues are caused by beginners not pushing it down hard enough. There was no "click" sound and even though the latches close properly and it appears fine on the outside, the RAM was not installed properly.
jade_cresil@reddit
It wasn’t that mine wasn’t pushed in, I put my ram in the first two slots and not 1 and 3 as my motherboard instructed

Hear me out. I have an AM4 with an old 3700x. I ran into the same shit when I first built it.
I don't know how it works, but try to boot with a monitor and preferably a displayport cable, and not a tv/hdmi. I have no clue what it is, but even to this day, i sometimes have issues if I cold boot my pc when it's connected to my tv with hdmi.
Again, just try if you're having the same issue with displayport cable and a monitor instead of the tv. I'm pretty sure you won't. Again, I have no idea what it is, this is just anecdotal advice.
Hope you try it.
AstarothSquirrel@reddit
Make sure your ram timings are correct in bios. Make sure you download the chipset drivers from the mb manufacturer's site. First few days of windows will be a bit slow as it downloads and installs updates in the background. When you're comfortable that it is nice and stable, go into the bios and turn on fast boot. Run Heaven Benchmark or similar to give it a little stress test.

Well, that's why people often just buy a prebuilt when they have more money than time and lack the knowledge to troubleshoot effectively, both of which seem true for OP.
When you DIY the checklist is a part of the game. It's simple for people like me who tinker with PCs on just about a weekly basis, but for people who don't tinker much and prefer to set and forget, a prebuilt becomes a very attractive option.

I have been her tech support, emotional support, fixer, labourer, auto mechanic and everything else for about 12 years now... Can't see it going any other way haha.
I agree with prebuild being an easy option here but I really wanted to build a white + teal theme PC like her Legion 5 used to be. And the fact it's not just been taken of the shelf with card swiped makes it a more meaningful gift.

It was, with more power comes more trouble xD

Uncle Ben was right after all - with great power comes great responsibility.

It’s basically already answered but if anyone finds this thread in the future my biggest suggestion for any Ryzen CPU with boot issues is to update bios. Those RAM controllers are finicky as fuck.

In a complex system, just one component going wrong will screw up the whole thing. The standard approach is to start with the barebone minimums to get things going then add each component after you have verified that everything works fine.
The error code indicates issues with the RAM. I'd recommend starting with just one stick in there. Another commenter mentioned that your problems are probably due to the memory controller unable to handle the high speeds due to all 4 slots being populated.
I'd also remove all the strimers, just to rule out that they cause any issues. Put them back only after everything is working properly.
I had a look at the motherboard page and it mentions that it supports your CPU since version 1.0 so I don't think you need to update the BIOS to get it working.
Companies are in the cut-throat business of selling stuff and they need the biggest possible numbers for marketing. Generally, it's not a good idea to slot in something at the maximum possible capacity and maximum possible speeds unless you actually need that extra performance. Higher performance comes with a thinner margin for error.

Update your bios first. You can leave everything on and use “q flash” to update if you can boot into bios. Seems like you can, it just takes time.
Happy birthday to your girl, hope she appreciates the gift.

Did you test it without the strimers?
FunNefariousness6980@reddit (OP)
Are they a likely culprit?
Bondsoldcap@reddit
those have issues yes, usually when you remove it helps the issue

Good luck I really hope you can get this figured out

First boot can have a really long black screen as it goes through several boot cycles. Ive also had this weird thing happen recently where the pc will turn on, but I get no display. I have to unplug the display cable from the monitor and plug it back in. Sometimes I also have to unplug it from the gpu.
When updating the bios, make sure the file has been extracted, and only the bios file is on the flash drive. Sometimes it comes with a txt doc that has to be deleted. It also cant be in a folder.

So from what I read, the cpu and ram are throwing the error codes. First I'd ditch the strimers and use the main cables that came with the psu and I would test each ram stick you have. Make sure they are in the proper Channels ie 1-3 2-4. Those strimers or extensions come faulty out of the box frequently from my experience but I would check those.
