How to meet people

I gave up waiting for my friends to get money and PTO to travel so I’ve decided to go alone. I’m a huge extrovert and travelling alone makes me think too much and I get a bit down. I’m not expecting to make friends on a few day trip but I’d also like to talk and meet locals. Istanbul we’re very friendly but not sure what to expect from Budapest. I’m from the UK. If anyone can recommmed me good hostels to meet people or places I’d would much appreciate it

I have the same problem as I’ve been here for 2 months now, 2 weeks left. The people here don’t seem to be interested in talking to people who don’t speak their language, kind of same as with french and italian people (usually, definetely not always). You will notice the same theme in stores and buses etc. Some company here would be nice but I just haven’t bothered anymore, seeing how uninterested people here are towards foreigners. Also me being a full-on extrovert but not interested in trying to get to know new people here really tells how little people here are interested… it’s sad because I really like the country, the food, people at work etc. And I would’ve guessed people about my age (19) would be interested in meeting others. Only people I’ve gotten to know even somewhat here are from work.

It's not just the language. I speak Hungarian, and I feel the same, after living here for almost 10 years.

You can meet fellow tourists in Timeleft app. Hungarians? Not really. And you are not missing anything unless you love someone that complain no stop and with very grumpy and negative attitude. Try also couchsurfing. Bro its one of the hardest place to make friends or meet people in eastern europe. Good luck!

Try “Host a Sister” group on Facebook

if you search this sub we get this same question on how to meet others here at least once every other week. but i suspect you just want to put a lantern on your "problem" for the duration of your tourist stay.

Not sure what vibe you are into, but Gólya would be a place where you can meet interesting people. There is also Manyi which is a bit artsy and has your age group.

Well, locals are not going to be very friendly, I'm sorry to say it. Best you can do is go to pubs with more foreign people. What about Ruin Brew? They have bingo every Tuesday night (I think they still do it) you can try 🤷🏼♀️

Try going to smaller pubs and start conversations with people. Don't be surprised if some people don't want to talk to you, it's usually a language barrier thing or they just want to mind their own business. Regulars and bartenders are usually open for conversations though.

Look up the theory of coconut and peach cultures. Hungarians are definitely coconuts: hard shell to break through for the "good stuff. Not something that can be accomplished in a few days. Hostels will have like-minded tourists though...

Maybe you could look up events on Facebook, or find some board game nights! I hope you'll like the city:)

I think this is pretty much universal, but locals tend to only want to befriend people who actually live in their city. It is exhausting to befriend a tourist and likely never speak to them again.
Don't think you'll have any issues. RIP your inbox. Good luck and have fun.

You won’t meet any locals at hostels that’s for sure. IMO locals don’t really mix with tourists here, you just don’t exist in the same place and time, but still your best bet would be bars around downtown? Maybe try going to ones which are not the top rated ones on tripadvisor. Also there are bunch of apps you can try like Timeleft and things like that.
