It's an unenforceable council scheme, a usual waste of taxpayer's cash. Allegedly to let signs encourage thefts because it advertises where students live.

thats.... weird. Advertises where students live? you know what also does that! google -> student accomodation [town] big sign saying "no to let signs here" indicating a massive problem with to let signs -> bbc news article saying because it advertises where the students are, its banned.

In Liverpool the student houses get robbed a lot in September as they’re thought of by thieves as rich kids with nice computers and TV’s that can’t stick up for themselves.

A friend went to uni in Liverpool. Got accommodation on the edge of Toxteth. He was a devil may care kinda guy. First night he went and had a few pints in the local where (apparently) students were not welcome. Within the first couple of weeks his place was robbed. He went to the pub that night, complained he'd been robbed. Few days later his stuff reappeared.

Reminds me of a traveler site near Leighton Buzzard. As soon as the site opened up, the thefts of farm equipment and stuff in the area went through the roof. But if you talked to the guy who was really in charge of the site. You'd get your stuff back within 24 hours. People would stay awake all night looking out of the windows, watching the CCTV etc. But nobody ever saw them putting the stuff back.

LEIGHTON BUZZARD MENTIONED!! yeh the travelers are weirdly civilised if you get chummy with them, its quite funny
View on Reddit #58230697

AnOtherGuy1234567@reddit

It used to be just the one guy, who would organise to get your stuff back. He was a flipping brick shit house, who could leg press about a ton (seriously). The last I heard of him though, was in the early 2010s. When he'd been sentenced to about 8 years for a really serious GBH. Basically he grabbed a guy's hair and basically scalped him.

This is decades ago but I love telling this story. Shared a student house with two other fellas. No TV License - get endless letters, TV in front room. Get up one day and my dopy house mate lets in the TV License people - we are fucked. They go in the front room and...there is no TV... just dust around where the base was. TV licensing leave, we congratulate each other on whoever hide the TV. Nobody had hide the TV but we forgot to lock the back door and it got robbed over night 😂

No_Preference9093@reddit

Yeah but ordinary people live there too, and if you remove the to let signs it’s harder to target certain houses because now you don’t know which ones will be empty at certain times.  For example at Christmas, the house could be full of a family or an empty student house. With a to let sign up you know it’s an empty student house.  With a to let sign up, in September you know a bunch of students with brand new Mac’s have just moved in. Etc.

mralistair@reddit

these adverts online don't give the house number. And also people leave these signs up for the whole year.
View on Reddit #58141280

libdemparamilitarywi@reddit

The adverts usually have a big picture of the front of the house with the house number visible. And a link to the Google map street view showing exactly where it is. I've always thought it a bit pointless when estate agents don't list the house number, as it's so trivial to work it out.

Saved you a click >A pilot scheme to ban To Let signs in part of Liverpool has begun amid concerns about crime and community safety. >People in the Smithdown Road area say the situation has become "crazy" with boards on almost every other house. >They are worried the signs advertise where students live, which leads to crime, and gives the impression no-one wants to live there.

85NH@reddit

No idea why and I’ve never seen one myself before but that area is mainly places that are let out instead of for sale so it is strange to see such a sign. Just had a quick Google and there was a pilot scheme in 2015. “The scheme was prompted by concerns from local residents and councillors who said numerous boards were having a detrimental impact on the neighbourhood’s housing market.” Liverpool Echo.
View on Reddit #58132522

Friendly_Fennel9577@reddit

Yeah, it’s about those “To Let” signs for rentals, some areas were getting absolutely plastered with them, making neighbourhoods look a bit rundown or transient. So councils started banning them in certain zones to keep the place looking tidier. Basically, visual vibes over property ads.

Still funny and I'm a decade older. There's a single track road in (I think Grindleford forest) with passing points every couple of hundred yards and some absolute legend has changed every sign for about a 3 mile stretch to pissing place. Couldn't drive after only about half mile for the tears in my eyes!

There are streets in Stoke around the student areas where seasonally the entire street is covered in to let signs. It looks a mess and if I lived there I would agree on their prohibition.

It’ll be a council thing. They’ll send someone round every so often to make sure it’s being followed and fine anyone breaking it. Thing is, burglars often have mobile phones and can access Rightmove just like the rest of us. It’s amazing that For Sale / To Let signs aren’t dying out really.
View on Reddit #58135966

Smathatic@reddit

That’s the trick - ‘To Let’ and ‘For Sale’ signs aren’t advertising the property. They’re advertising the agency so that other landlords/sellers have the perception that that agency does lots of business in the area, therefore they should let/sell with that agent.
View on Reddit #58140144

Janjannaj@reddit

Alternatively, the agent is so bad that they have places on the market for ages, so avoid if you want to actually sell or let your place.

Maybe it's just my area, but when I put up a for sale sign, a surprising number of people actually knocked on my door and asked about it! I don't know if any of those enquiries went anywhere or if this was indeed people scoping me out, but they definitely do get noticed.

Tbh the To Let signs in studentish areas can be awful. Old signs don't get taken town etc
View on Reddit #58136785

GeneralTubz@reddit

So I work in planning and the Council can implement a Regulation restricting the use of To Let signs as a form of advertising. This is often used in student areas where most of the properties are To Let and always advertising To Let.
