Ones one thing you'd change about Milton Keynes that you feel would make living here better?

I would colour code the H and V roads to make them have their own character. I'm not originally from Milton Keynes and I've always found it a bit hard to visualise where I am on the grid roads. Having each road have different colour flowers would help me, and make it look pretty.
Typical-Signature-85@reddit
I disagree with this one, once you learn the grids they are very easy to navigate

Having a tram system would be amazing (or something equally cool)! I love MK and we pioneered a lot of stuff but we’re not cutting the mustard on transportation within the city. Great links to go other places… but not within the city. So a clean, modern, hop-on, hop-off public transport would be next level.
middleqway@reddit
I haven’t visited MK before so my ignorance might be showing but I feel like the city could easily implement some very good public transport given its gridded/geometric layout. Route planning and integrating new infrastructure would surely be simpler than with an old spaghetti layout city.
nasted@reddit
Well exactly! MK was indeed built to allow for something like a tram system - and it just never happened.
I think there are plans for some kind of mass transport system but that could be years away.

mebutnew@reddit
It was always supposed to have trams between the two sides of the dual carriageways, it was literally designed for trams!
fuzzbook@reddit
I think it needs a proper university and with it some more clubs and bars to improve the nightlife.
Kaniasterr@reddit
I agree I just don’t think we have the infrastructure for it. There isn’t enough housing as is, and inviting students will probably mean older residents get pushed out to new build housing
fuzzbook@reddit
I dunno there's a lot of building happening in MK. You can also build up. I know people are against building flats in the centre but it would really help in this situation. Don't see why older residents would have to move.
Student population would be good for the infrastructure imo. They bring money and life to the city without taking jobs / GP places etc.. A university would also bring good jobs and facilities for the non student population of MK.
When you think places like Loughborough, Lancaster and Durham manage it, I'm sure MK could handle a university.
YourSkatingHobbit@reddit
Students definitely do get jobs, usually hospitality or retail: it was a necessity when I was at uni over a decade ago even if you got full maintenance (which I did), and the cost of living has only skyrocketed since then.
Kaniasterr@reddit
Maybe you’re right. It’s really not uncommon for a city to have a uni

I really agree with this, I so dislike that the recent entertainment options have just been introducing more things that families can do in any city every time it's a kid's birthday rather than providing any options that residents can really integrate into their lifestyles, or actually build a sense of community and culture which is seriously lacking in mk

There are thousands of houses being built in Milton Keynes. There are innovative conversions like the one at station house and there are estates being build as part of the Milton Keynes expansion. Why do we need a 33 story tower block of build to rent apartments towering over everything nearby. For reference the jaipur development will be more than twice the height of the premier inn.

Functional public transport
Fair_Future7245@reddit
First thing that popped into my mind. If MK had a tram or dare I say...monorail cough (iykyk) it would elevate MK just that much further.
Also, if we had an actual University here, that would elevate the city a lot more, too.

Not just more buses but a proper infrastructure based permanent MTS, you know, now MK is a city and everything 🙄
A subway would be a stretch, but I lived in Croydon back when they put the trams in, and it made such a difference.
It's not like MK doesn't already have the perfect set up and space for trams or a monorail or even one of those guided bus routes like in Luton. (The old rumours of the wide verges being for that exact purpose)
Perhaps they could use the money from all the new parking charges. The city of the car, unless you want to park anywhere,🤣
If you're not going to do that, the new estates need grid road extensions to stop the bottlenecks.

mebutnew@reddit
Perhaps you already know this but the reason that MK has the perfect setup for teams is because it was always supposed to have them - the gaps in the middle of the dual carriageways were designated for the purpose.

Queasy-Obligation-29@reddit
Likewise
Queasy-Obligation-29@reddit
I've lived in cities (outside UK) that aren't even as optimised for tramways, and they run really well. Tramways would definetly be the perfect mode of transport here.
Lady_of_Lomond@reddit
Yes! Including to the outer reaches. When I first came to Olney 40 years ago we had 4 buses an hour and we could get a coach from the Bull to London Marylebone.
Also, we could do with a really decent large concert hall with good acoustics, like a Corn Exchange, but I'd plump for public transport first.
Glad-Feature-2117@reddit
What's wrong with The Stables? Amazing place for concerts, much better acoustic and more comfortable in general than the Corn Exchange. Bands needing larger venues have a choice of the Stadium or the Bowl.
Lady_of_Lomond@reddit
The Stables is absolutely lovely but it's small. You can't fit a symphony orchestra in there. It's only something like 300-350 seats. It's brilliant for a chamber orchestra and has wonderful acoustics. But I'm thinking of something about 700-800 seats.
The Bowl and the Stadium are great for bands but not for acoustic music.
I realise it's not a priority for many, but it would be brilliant for all kinds of events, not just concerts.
Glad-Feature-2117@reddit
I like classical music too, but I honestly don't think there's the demand for it in a venue that size in MK, especially with London so easy to get to.
Lady_of_Lomond@reddit
Well, Bedford and Cambridge Corn Exchanges run a very varied programme, lots of comedy, singers and bands etc, with classical music in the mix. The main thing there is that they were existing large buildings for which the original use had fallen away, that just happen to be the ideal ,classic shoebox shape for an excellent auditorium. Starting from scratch is another kettle of fish.
BeastMode149@reddit
A tram system that crisscrosses the city would be great.
Also, a more modern bus fleet and transit signal priority along key bus corridors.
It would be great to have a unified payment system for a future bus/tram/train network in Milton Keynes, something a bit like Nottingham Contactless.
_WakeDaFukUp_@reddit
Have a system to remove and prevent graffiti. It’s a minor thing, but it doesn’t half make the place look shit when we all know it’s great
Historical_Belt1291@reddit
Or on the flip side, an area specifically for graffiti- and not just shit tags and random words, but actual graffiti art. I used to work in Shoreditch in East London and there are areas that are canvassed in amazing, detailed graffiti and really brought life and soul to the place. I reckon having a specific area for graffiti artists to get creative without the repercussions would work quite well.
cankennykencan@reddit
Less huge buildings.
Miss the charm of the city centre in the early 90s. The food hall, the library.
Less corporate crap
Notagelding@reddit
You know things have to move forward, right? We can't have your no building bigger than the tallest tree utopia forever more
Feel_My_Bass@reddit
Tall buildings designed to be sympathetic to the surroundings are great - Hotel La Tour is a brilliant addition for example. But thoughtless high rises don’t help and the developments at Saxon Court and now at the old Jaipur site will ruin the skyline for all neighbouring estates and for what? Profiteering property companies whose only aim is to cram in more apartments and drive up housing costs. Meanwhile lots of areas go undeveloped for years or are left derelict (Toys r Us). There is nothing wrong with going higher but in need careful design and thinking and unfortunately this council is devoid of those characteristics.
Notagelding@reddit
Frankly, who cares about skylines, except NIMBYs. How are property companies driving up costs? Without new housing the economy just stagnates.
jo-mk@reddit
I never understand the sentiment of, no building higher than the trees?
Because the trees will always grow vertically, so logic states, the buildings will get taller.
Notagelding@reddit
I can understand it back in the 70s or whenever it was that the statement was made, as there probably weren't that many tall buildings about but times change. Would be great marketing to place a bonsai tree on the roof of the tallest building!
Vestenpance@reddit
Adding taller buildings to the city centre is the way to get the population density that enables the creation of more facilities. The library is still there?!
JungBall666@reddit
Milton Keynes is a nice place. Nice parks and lots of space for driving and walking.
Still-Improvement-32@reddit
Better public transport would be good but the "MK was designed for trams" point is a myth, just as it wasn't designed for cycling. The only form of transport that benefits from the design is cars. Because its so easy to travel by car everybody who has one mainly uses them, making other forms of travel under used, unprofitable, non viable etc.

20 years ago I joined the police in MK. There were 6-8 police cars that reacted to 999 calls most shifts, that number never went any higher yet the city kept getting bigger. The size of the place has grown and grown but the infrastructure hasn’t kept up. I agree with the hospital comments.
The place looks so run down and overgrown. I am actually pleased I don’t live there anymore.
Oh and while I’m moaning, paying to park in the city centre, you’re having a laugh. It doesn’t make me want to use public transport to get there… it just makes me not want to go there.

Imagine how nice that town centre could be if all that land except the roads was auctioned off in say, small plots about 10-20m wide each, with buyers allowed to build almost anything they wanted within size constraints.
You know, like they did in years gone by that created thriving town centres - by empowering individuals to self determination rather than having everything controlled by big money only which results in nothing but big soulless dystopias everywhere. Yes MK was a government plan, but it's all big corporate brands.
A grid like this could be a new Manhattan, why the hell don't we do something like that? You know - high density!

We used the pool at the Swan Leisure Centre in Buckingham. I'm from the North and happily moving here. I asked my girlfriend, "Do you have a big fun pool?" Her answer was, "No."
The nearest is Coventry...
tttkkk@reddit
And the Coventry one is not really good. There is a nice one closer in Bedford but for Centre Parks residents only. I would say Alton Towers waterpark and Coral Reef in Reading are closest decent ones, but are quite far away still.
West-Ad-1532@reddit
We use the Woburn for one-off spa visits, but like you say, for a day tripper, it's no good. I mentioned the Coventry one and she said no (Its rough)..
In the end, the small pool fun swim was good enough..
tttkkk@reddit
Yeah Swan Pool is what we normally use as a substitute for waterpark. Wolverton one is OKish, but can be busy.
Where on Woburn for spa?
West-Ad-1532@reddit

Milton Keynes used to have several! They just went out of business at the turn of the millennium.

Milton Keynes has cycle infrastructure on redways, but the paths are degraded, and are bottom on the list to be maintained. These paths should be an investment. If the cycle paths were better, then more people would use them and be the potential for less need of public transport
Ie move to a Oxford like culture..
Also, I think that redway users should have right of way when crossing roads.

Kaniasterr@reddit
It’s frustrating but I think that’s just because it’s such a new city, there hasn’t been time to cultivate that culture so it’s just easier to put chain restaurants and stores in. I agree though I love the comfort that a local greasy spoon brings, we generally don’t have enough community spaces
Livid-Ad4561@reddit
Honestly, getting to Luton, Stansted or Heathrow airports from Milton Keynes using public transport is a nightmare. I'd love to leave the car at home when I travel, but right now it takes so long and often means parking somewhere outside MK just to start the journey. To lower CO2 emissions and encourage the use of public transport, further lowering CO2 emissions, I’d like to see 40 mph limits on all dual carriageway roads except the A5 (60 mph), A421 and A422 (50 mph) and 30 mph on single carriageways.
The cycle of accelerating to 70 mph then braking for a roundabout then accelerating back up to 70 mph is immensely environmentally damaging. It is surely unjustifiable in 2025 and in the context of progressing towards net zero.
As anyone who drives regularly in London will know, the capital is heading towards a blanket 20 mph limit and is arguably the better for it. Air pollution is down and there has been a sharp (>30%) reduction in injuries and fatalities on London’s roads.
I know these measures will be very unpopular with drivers who enjoy the Milton Keynes ‘racetrack experience’ but people and the environment should take priority.
2JagsPrescott@reddit
Echoing previous comments, F right off and go live in London.
The capital (having grown organically over the last few hundred years) is completely different to Milton Keynes which was designed from the outset to provide fast efficient car routes.

Poor you
MikeTheActorMan@reddit
Omg fuck right off with that.
Is it you that I'm always stuck behind when I'm trying to go the speed limit and you're tootling along like a frightened grandma at 45mph?
There's AMPLE space to get up to 60 or 70 on most of the roads and stay there for a while before having to brake for the next roundabout. Providing you don't press the accelerator with the pressure of a gnat's weight, anyway. The difference in fuel economy or environmental impact is negligible between 40-60mph, anyway. If you're so concerned about the environment or how quickly you need to refuel, get an electric car, or just cycle everywhere please, and stop blocking the roads and holding the rest of us up.
pronoobmage@reddit
You can still drive at the speed limit, even if it's 50 mph. 🙃
Going 70 might save you a few seconds, but the time gain is marginal and the environmental impact is significant.
Milton Keynes shouldn't be treated like a race track.
MikeTheActorMan@reddit
Driving at the speed limit of 60mph for a single or 70mph for a dual carriageway, on roads that were designed for those speeds is not "treating it like a racetrack". On the contrary, driving at 40mph on those roads is infuriating to drivers behind, and borderline dangerous. Plus, if driving across the length of MK, you can be MINUTES ahead of someone if they're trundling through at 40mph. By even the next roundabout they can be so far behind you, they're out of sight. I value my time and my life too much to dawdle everywhere at a snail's pace.
pronoobmage@reddit
"I value my time and my life too much"
If it would be true you wouldn't drive 70mph in a city, just because you can.
This "I have to run everywhere" attitude will make your life shorter.
When you got someday "MINUTES" before, just sit down and think about that for a few seconds. It will be better for everyone.
_WretchedDoll_@reddit
It's not borderline dangerous, it IS dangerous. My work keeps me on the roads of MK all day so I see it all, and we don't need to be introducing arbitrary rules when so many cannot abide by the minimum standard currently. It's nuts out there. Be careful, predict but don't trust.

I lived in Milton Keynes for three years, and as an outsider, I definitely agree it needs a stronger sense of a traditional town centre. While it's hard to replicate the organic growth of older cities, that's undeniably what's missing from its central design.
Despite that, I actually grew to really like the place. I travelled home to Ireland every other weekend for work, but I could absolutely see myself bringing a family up there. The sheer amount of green space, the extensive network of walkways (Redways!), and the abundance of kid-friendly activities are fantastic. I am from Milton Keynes, and it’s close to my heart. But the infrastructure could really do with improving. It was only really designed for 250,000 people. The population at this point has surely surpassed 310,000?
I am only basing the following on when I lived there (pre-Covid.) - It may have improved.
The commuter traffic was unbearable. It used to take me 45 minutes after work to do a total of 4 miles. I would like to note that I knew all the shortcuts, but so did everyone else! (Thank you Google maps/waze!)
Everywhere was way too overcrowded. Want a seat at a nice restaurant, on the perfect day? Better make sure you put your reservation in a month before hand!

ZealousidealRiver398@reddit
Each estate to have a central focal point as opposed to being rows of houses with sporadic shop/school/amenites access.
E.g Tattenhoe would have all the roads leading to a central square/piazza with the co-op, pub, school, eateries. Would add more character to each estate, and over time allow them to develop their own identities outside of just being part of Milton Keynes.
The above, alongside a tram network/MUCH better public transport
