Bulgaria gets green light to join euro in 2026

Brussels formally approved Bulgaria's years-long bid to join the euro area on Wednesday, paving the way for it to become the eurozone’s 21st member on 1 January 2026. https://www.euractiv.com/section/economy-jobs/news/bulgaria-gets-green-light-to-join-euro-in-2026/
AcanthocephalaSea410@reddit
After waiting for so many years, it finally happened.
Let me mention some of the negative aspects. Bulgaria may lose its price advantage in exports and become a society oriented towards consumption rather than production. In crisis situations, it is usually difficult to overcome because you cannot produce your own money, and since the money has to come from outside, you may fall into an endless debt trap.
Vesko85@reddit (OP)
You are righy, but we are consumer society already and we can't produce our own money since 1998 when we accept the currency board.
AcanthocephalaSea410@reddit
Wow thanks for informing me. I didn't know they had set you up and taken over your money system.
Conscious_Repair_713@reddit
We made that choice ourselves because the situation was very bad back then. Tying the lev to the euro in 97 and taking the monetary policy away from our own hands was the best thing that could have happened to us. Back then there was a hyperinflation and later when we got tied to the euro we had to denominate by 1000, that's how much our currency was depreciated.
AcanthocephalaSea410@reddit
It had reached around a million for us. When inflation decreased, we made 1$ = 1 million ₺ and 1$ = 1₺, the traces left by inflation were erased.
The ability to increase the exchange rate during a crisis has a life-saving effect. The effects can be reversed if a little patience is exercised. After the problems are solved, it could be corrected by making 1000 leva = 1 $, after 1 $ = 1 leva. I think Bulgaria could manage this situation even if it had not switched to this system. It gave up easily without putting up a fight.
Conscious_Repair_713@reddit
We have very divided opinions on whether or not to enter the eurozone, but I have yet to hear a single (just one!) economist say that tying the lev to the euro was a bad thing. The idea is that the euro is amazingly strong, it's the world's second reserve currency and especially now with Trump's dumb actions it's becoming stronger, a crisis is not likely and if it happens, at least with our participation in the eurozone we will have a say on how to overcome it, like with the example you gave.
Aegeansunset12@reddit
Nice, welcome to the gang neighbour!!
PlamenIB@reddit
I don’t have to exchange money when I visit Thessaloniki anymore 🥳
Dramatic-Panda8012@reddit
meh...we still need to exchange romanian money when we come bulgaria :(
Forward-Cantaloupe62@reddit
Whatever, anyway, the majority of the population keeps their savings in euros.
WetIce@reddit
Majority of the population does not have savings lol.
Forward-Cantaloupe62@reddit
Check romanian Malls and cars. We have money :)) but they are not declared
WetIce@reddit
Yeah savings is more like money you didn't spend. Malls and cars are some big reasons people don't have any savings.
PlamenIB@reddit
But you are going to be able to use them in Greece, Croatia and the rest of the countries so not that big a deal I guess.
simke4@reddit
It’s the stupidiest thing you can do. In Croatia the prices have tripled since the euro was introduced in 2023.
PlamenIB@reddit
The prices are up everywhere and unfortunately it is not expensive to Croatia.
simke4@reddit
Believe me the prices didn’t rise anywhere as much as in Croatia. I see people are dumb as fck and downvoting. Never mind, when you introduce euro you’ll remember my words. Good luck!
SamorimCalecute@reddit
Believe me. You're wrong.
Sharp_Win_7989@reddit
Prices were already rising high in Croatia before the Euro was even implemented.
simke4@reddit
Not even close as much as when euro was introduced. I experienced it so I know what I am talking about. Never mind, just be happy for Euro. You won’t be once it gets introduced and your prices skyrocket 😅. I live close to northern Italy and since Euro came we go there for a food shopping as it’s much cheaper then in Croatia. That can give you an idea.
Sharp_Win_7989@reddit
Prices in Italy, which use the euro, are lower than croatia. So what you really are saying is that the euro isn't the issue?!
simke4@reddit
No more time for dummies. Abort
nickkamenev@reddit
Yeah, and prices will go up for you, and your economy will be become less competitive. It might benefit us and hurt you.
Inna94061@reddit
Half of us think the same and want referendum. But our politicians say we are dumb and have no capacity to decide about such important matter?!!!!!Like they are not corrupted stupid fucks.
nickkamenev@reddit
You should have had a referendum, like so many european countries have done on such matters.
LargeFriend5861@reddit
It's illegal to have a referendum on this question.
nickkamenev@reddit
Your claim is based on what ? Other members of the eu had have referendums on such issues.
LargeFriend5861@reddit
Because we already signed an agreement to adopt the euro, upon joining the EU. Other countries did not, when they conducted their referendum. You can't just sign an agreement and choose not to follow it.
nickkamenev@reddit
Dude, wtf are you talking about ? Are we playing with words here ? Your political leadership had the responsibility to bring a referendum before you. It was their legal responsibility. They CHOSE not to, and signed the agreement. It didnt "just happen", so dont mention. It doesnt xhange the fact that you should have had and you should have a referendum. Period.
LargeFriend5861@reddit
Actually, as a matter of fact, it did not have that legal responsibility. Should they have done it? Yes. But before signing the agreement to join the EU, not after. We are approximately 17 years old for that now. As for rn? It's illegal.
nickkamenev@reddit
They had. Whether you like it or not. Your stance is extremely irresponsible, as is your politicians stance. Once you enter the eurozone, you cant leave, and it will have a huge impact on your economy in the long term.
A bunch of a few irresponsible guys and their whims and wishes can not set the fate of an entire nation for generations, just because they want, for their own personal gains It is comical.
LargeFriend5861@reddit
Show me the law that states they had a legal responsibility to put it up to a referendum. You can't? Because they didn't. I do think a referendum should've been done, but it's too late now.
Those few guys are also elected leaders into power. Elected after 7 elections, in which the Euro was a very big focal point of discussion. We live in a representative democracy, not a direct one. And once more, it's too late now. It's literally in the constitution itself, that we will accept the Euro.
nickkamenev@reddit
Your answer is childish. It is not a matter of a single law. It is a matter of constitutional and legal principles. Constitutions deal with such matters, not laws.
Laws are voted and altered all the time. It is nothing to create a new law.
It is a matter of national interests that will impact generations upon generation, with huge repercussions. It is not up to you and your whims and wishes, whether you like or not. Neither it is up to the whims and wishes of a small selection of people, who "believe" in things.
Your stance is extremely irresponsible and arbitrary.
LargeFriend5861@reddit
The constitution is THE Supreme Law in the country, my guy. When I say law, you could bring up the constitution, and it'd still count. So tell me, once more... Where does it state in the constitution that we need to vote for this via a referendum?
I never said it's up to me? It's up to the constitution and the constitutional Court... Which ruled a referendum to be illegal, btw. You could also argue that this isn't a matter for the average citizen who knows nothing of the economy and how it functions at a basic level. I could easily say that this is a matter for the experts. But once more: We voted for this. We are a representative democracy, not a direct one. We voted for people who were pro Euro for years, decades even.
I'm sorry that it's irresponsible and arbitrary to... Follow the law?
nickkamenev@reddit
Go read the constitution of Bulgaria, along with all the other countries that have had referendums on such matters and tell me.
You hate democracy and you love your hypothetical or real self interest more than your country, to the point that you are hysterical on removing the right of your compatriots to have a say on such a national matter.
Nothing more to discuss here, we live in two separete worlds.
LargeFriend5861@reddit
As a matter of fact, I have read it. And guess what: There's nothing there stating we HAVE to take a referendum for the Euro.
I am pro-democracy, heavily so. But I'm also for the rule of law. This was deemed illegal by the constitutional court itself. Not only that, but it would be in violation of an agreement we directly signed with the EU. So tell me, how am I wrong in this matter? There is no law that says we have to take a referendum, and there is actually a law that says such a referendum is illegal. They had a right to vote in elections for the past 17 years, and they voted for Pro-EU parties and never once pushed for this issue before now. Once more: We are a representative democracy, not a direct one.
Also, once more, all those relating to the Euro were made BEFORE signing the contract.
PlamenIB@reddit
“The People” are those who thought the vaccine put microchip in their brain so Bill Gates can tell them what to do. Not to mention that because of Schengen we were about to become the biggest migrant camp in EU. 400K lunatics are not the voice of 5M. There were elections over 7 times for the past 4 years so they had multiple chances.
nickkamenev@reddit
What ? Its a clear matter of democracy. Simple question, for a simple referendum. Simple legal point, not extra words needed.
Once you enter the eurozone, you can not exit. So, you HAVE to make a referendum. Its the only responsible option.
PlamenIB@reddit
There is a political party for that reason. Again- elections seven times (or more- I don’t remember). Seven times are more than enough. Not going to vote one more time just because 400 000 people.
nickkamenev@reddit
No. It is a matter too important to simply "interpret" it this way.
In addition, legally, this is very fliud.
If you want to be serious about your country, you have to be specific.
Inna94061@reddit
Yes,we def should and I personally am for delaying for at least 5 years. To wait and see what's gonna happen worldwide and if euro is the right choice at all.....It's irreversible decision and we don't trust these corrupted morons to take it! They don't want referendum because at least half if not more people are hardly against it. And for some reason our politicians are in a hurry.....They never ever asked us(because we stupid?!!!)because they know the answer will be negative.
nickkamenev@reddit
They are in hurry because it will give them access to loans in a strong currency.
LargeFriend5861@reddit
No, that's not what they're saying. The reason we aren't having a referendum is that we already signed an agreement to accept the Euro. The referendum should've happened when we were joining the EU, and we could've tried negotiating a loophole... But we didn't. It's too late now. We can't just throw away all our agreements when we feel like it.
vbd71@reddit
They might have some point, though.
A Bulgarian politician: "Our people must be really dumb if they elected someone like me."

nickkamenev@reddit
Bulgaria will regret this, just as Greece did. People do not observe and learn.
LibertyChecked28@reddit
Oh we do- it's just that those who have more than 2 braincells are deemed "Inconvinient", and all "inconvinients" are silenced & replaced on the account of them being: "Putin's Agents".
nickkamenev@reddit
Man, as an economics graduate, i have made a study on the negative impact of the euro on the greek economy and its role in causing the greek crisis. Most of my professors, although conservative and right-wing, are against the euro, because they are professional economists and scientists, and can asses it in a clear way, beyond andy superficial excitement.
Warching people now silently downvote me is hilarious and soooo interesting me to me. I feel like Noah or something. I know they are wrong, i know what will happen and what this means, yet i enjoy their silent disapproval of the inconvenient truth.
Because they want to believe in something that will make the future better.
tenev@reddit
Bulgaria has pegged currency for \~ 30 years. Currently we are experiencing all the "negatives" of not having independent monetary policy (we can not devalue the lev in crisis) and 0 of the positives (we have higher risk premium, higher transactional costs, not having a voice in ECB rates, etc). Greece economy was addicted to debt + devaluation cycles in the past, so when you enter in eurozone - the inability to depreciate the currency exploded your debt. We do not have the same macroeconomic imbalances as Greece - we have many other problems :), but debt is not one of them. So it is not probable to expect the Greece scenario in Bulgaria.
Leontopod1um@reddit
Yes of course it's not a problem, because it's our children's problem, right? Despicably pathetic. Indeed, our debt addicts have not been able to overdose, but they sure get high as soon as they get a chance. Just because it's a smaller problem than Greece had doesn't make it negligible.
tenev@reddit
It is not a problem because historically it is around 20-25%. BG economy long term growth is around \~ 2.6 and budget deficit is rarely bigger than 2-2.5, so we are basically paying off our dept with growth. It is not a problem because in this regard we have pretty sound economic policy.
nickkamenev@reddit
Fair answer
nickkamenev@reddit
The more downvotes i receive, the more competitive the bulgarian economy will hecome after the adoption of euro. Ho ho ho.
interloper76@reddit
what for? and why? does not make sense. you have semi-euro (BGN) since decades and monetary semi-independence, why change it?
Vesko85@reddit (OP)
Because we are part of the EU, and according to the treaty we are obliged to adopt the euro. It doesn't specify when, but sooner or later it has to happen. The currency board is a major constraint on the development of the economy.
ZhiveBeIarus@reddit
My condolences to my Bulgarians friends.
Leontopod1um@reddit
The battle is not lost yet. I mean we must enter the eurozone in some number of years. It's our current government that is trying to force us to enter as soon as next year, but we can find a way to work out a delay. A delay in a few years is what we really need.
KdotD@reddit
Will this make people poor or rich?
PlamenIB@reddit
Probably no difference. When it comes to homes and cars everything is in euros since… Idk. I bought my apartment in euros but had to convert them in levs. So I don’t think there will be difference.
Leontopod1um@reddit
By far not all property is sold in €. Also, the Croats warned you that prices will be rounded up in shops throughout, unless they get boycotted.

RustCohle_23@reddit
ok, now tell me what part of the reserve will be transferred to ECB.
Burenosets@reddit
I am not sure but that’s not the worst part. The worst part is that the rest of the reserve will go to Boyko and peevski.
LargeFriend5861@reddit

We've always been similar. We were just too busy fighting each other to realize that.
ISV_VentureStar@reddit
Let's hope so.
But your budget deficit is over 3 times the requirement for the eurozone (3% vs Romania's 9.3%) and your debt to GDP is nearing the limit as well (60% limit, Romania's is 55%). It would be a tough fight but I hope for the best.

JRJenss@reddit
Wow...in 6 months already?! Congrats to Bulgaria! From our experience: be ready to boycott stores and supermarket chains rounding the prices up. Hopefully everything goes smoothly and the government won't need to interfere as was the case in Croatia...not because of the euro itself, but because of the greedy mofos.
Ringspecies@reddit
We preemptively raised hell about it, now every store is starting to list prices in both currencies, as to make sure no rounding etc. takes place. Even got an SMS from the mobile provider reassuring me of no rounding up, etc.
JRJenss@reddit
Good. We had prices listed in both currencies for the entire first year. The problems started only after that. Bakers were the worst - a baker mafia. After that, the same sh*t continued due to tourism and regardless of the euro...the greedy bastards! The working people on the coast live with Swiss prices and balkan salaries. It's gotten to the point where we've become too expensive even for the Germans and Scandinavians... nuff said.
Ringspecies@reddit
Sadly many people on our coast suffer from the same, even without the euro. It's all due to tourists.
(maybe not so)Fun fact, our far right is actually using Croatia as an example why we must never join the eurozone. How are you guys tackling this, aren't there arrests, cartel breakups etc?
JRJenss@reddit
Really?? Lol! The price hikes here have nothing to do with euro. Even before, the euro was just an excuse for greedy..I guess you could call them cartels, like the baker's cartel, lol!
As for tackling with it, the government had to step in at one point and put a cap on prices. Otherwise, no...you can't arrest people for abusing the supply and demand mechanism.
vbd71@reddit
Bulgarians did it even with the Lev still in power when the chains raised the prices in anticipation of Euro zone admission... I'm pretty sure they're ready.

I think we first have to wait for the approval of the EU parliament and the Eurogroup (the finance ministers of the eurozone countries if I understand correctly) and it I'm not mistaken we need another approval from the EU council, from what I understand it's an approval of the heads of government of all EU countries, or is it also the heads of government of just the eurozone countries? And after that the council of the EU also needs to set the date on which we will be adopting the euro. So we need quite a few approvals from now on, idk how that will go, considering we've been blocked for Schengen since 2011, a total of 14 years. Idk whether they would block us for eurozone for another 14 years after we became ready

Jakdublin@reddit
No. Once the European Commission and the European Central Bank decide Bulgaria is ready that's it. The EU Council (heads of state) approval only needs a majority vote and member states have no veto, so Orban or any other dodgy leader couldn't prevent adoption.

Well that's the final nail in Byngarias coffin. People will be priced out. Enjoy your German currency.
Vesko85@reddit (OP)
The Bulgarian lev was pegged to the German mark as early as 1998, and later to the euro. Overall, Bulgaria has had excellent relations with Germany since 1900. But that's normal — the Germans have always supported us economically.

Man I wish we joined as well...
Square-99@reddit
Out of curiosity, does your government doing something in that regard or not really, like both people and govt are not interested in switching to EUR?
sendme__@reddit
There were some discussions last year, but we don't comply with multiple requirements including the law. Something, something there is no money to be made for our politicians so there is no interest.
No_Firefighter5926@reddit
In comparison to the past, now with Nicosur Dan there is the political will as he is clear a pro-EU integration.
The main problem now is to fix all this mess with Romania’s economy (especially the huge deficit the country has at this moment)
DGhitza@reddit
Let`s see with what sort of government we will end up with and even if the things will go to how Nicusor wants, a PSD PNL UDMR USR pro EU government which is willing to pass needed reforms and last until 2028; the 2028 parliamentary elections are looking to be won by AUR with a majority at the moment and AUR is the Liviu Dragnea anti-EU and pro Russian wing of PSD
ProductGuy48@reddit
They half heartedly say they will do something about it because it’s a treaty obligation, we are legally bound to adopt the euro eventually, but they have no interest in doing it as it would bring much stricter fiscal discipline which would prevent them from bribing their friends and electorate
Dubl33_27@reddit
there's also upsides in having our own currency, if only we'd have competent leaders that could use that power.
Kaer__Morhen@reddit
Depends, we also have our own currency but it's tied to the Euro so people don't notice that we are massively failing as a country
If we were using the Euro directly people would MAYBE put two and two together and realize that we have outrageous prices here
JRJenss@reddit
Didn't know dinar was pegged to the euro but well said. You might as well just introduce the euro unilaterally, without any agreements with the EU...the way Montenegro and Kosovo did it, lol!
Aggressive_Limit2448@reddit
Balkan Russia to introduce euro?
Serbia is a country where no elections happen like in Belarus.
Kaer__Morhen@reddit
We're working on it, it's hard to do anything with our senile old generations
Aggressive_Limit2448@reddit
What will you do next?

Cheers 🇪🇺

Putrid-Try-9872@reddit
you will surpass Greece nominal per capita in the next year or so, way to go!
oduzmi@reddit
Considering the Greek economy... that's not something to brag about lol.
__proto__null@reddit
Ppl seem to be excited. I am cautious - we might see crazy rise in prices.
Putrid-Try-9872@reddit
My Molto is made in Bulgaria I hope it doesn't affect its price in Lek
Smooth_Leadership895@reddit
They probably will because business will round up prices whilst people are getting used to the new currency.
