Ladies, what are y'all doing with your hair?

I've always been a wash and wear kind of girl. I have long hair that pretty much does what it wants with little input from me. I've started getting a lot of gray highlights over the last few years and I'm thinking I may be resembling "that bat-shit crazy old lady" every kid fears. I don't think I'm responsible enough to pull off that mature-put together-styled bob look, but I don't want the grandkids being made fun of either. How are my fellow Salt-N-Pepas rocking their 'dos?
oldbluehair@reddit
I have a few options for when it's long--two ponytails, one ponytail with a barrette, a couple of clips to keep it out of my face. Sometimes if I feel like it, especially in the winter, I will put hot rollers in and ton of product and that keeps it out of my face for a couple of days. At home I just keep it back with a bandana.
Lately my scalp seems more sensitive than it used to so my goals are to keep it out of my face without pulling and to look more or less presentable.
Dick-the-Peacock@reddit
For 5 or 6 years now I’ve kept it super short. I’m heat intolerant and live in a hot climate. I wore it long for a long for a long time but it’s coarse, frizzy, and full of freakish cowlicks and putting it up in a ponytail always gave me headaches. So now I experiment with short hair styles I’ve always found cute on men. Surprise! I look cute too! My favorite is a burst fade faux hawk, a little longer in the front, swept to one side. And purple. (Color depositing shampoo, no bleach.)
MarsupialOne6500@reddit
I embrace my inner Swamp Witch. It's long with a lot of gray and I don't care.I wash it and put a little curl cream to keep the frizz down
kitschywoman@reddit
No dye, about 50% gray with a full undercut. The top is about 12” long, I straighten it and wear it to one side. Gets me tons of compliments.
Mom2Dos@reddit
I pull it back into a small ponytail every damn day. Too lazy to style it. Also have the grays shining through and don’t care. lol
memes247365@reddit

I might be the #1 bat shit crazy old woman in the making. Im 58 & My hair (thick and curly) is basically down to my waist. Like 1/2 inch from it. I haven't colored it in months and its got like 3- 4 inches of solid gray & white roots. I am seriously low maintenance, and now I'm exhausted and have chronic pain. I thought screw it, ill let it be all gray.
But with my coloring I really do look half dead with gray hair. So I've started spraying the color touch up on the roots till I can drag my ass to the salon & get it colored (that'll be like 3 friggin hrs, to get this much very thick, very long, very gray hair done. Ugggh).
SO I keep thinking, maybe I am too old to hold onto this really long hair? I know and can hear it - that if my mother, who died 41 years ago, we're here she'd lose it on me. Tell me I " look like a mess,. too old for this rats nest, cut it short and get it done". BUT then I say NO. I AM NOT CUTTING IT....Idc - I like it long. My mom cut it short the whole time I was growing up and I hated it. I wanted long hair! I grew it very long by my 20s.
So fine! I'll be that old hippie looking grandma with hair down to her waist. ✌️
dhpncf@reddit
It’s nice to hear I’m not the only one whose mother was very controlling about their hair. Growing up mine cut my hair short all the time. She told me I could have long hair when I took care of it myself. However at 46 years old she was still trying to get me to cut my waist length hair. I’m perfectly happy pulling my hair back in a clip and keeping it out of my face.
doctordoctorgimme@reddit
I was forced to have very long hair. The first thing I did when my mother gave me control of my hair in high school was to go to a salon and have it all cut off. I have a pixie in my graduation photos. Now my hair is salt and pepper and down past the middle of my back.
PresentationApart744@reddit
We must've had the same mother. When I was a little kid, people mistook me for a boy. My mom would take me to the barbershop along with my brother. I hated it. My feelings got hurt often and it took a toll. Enough about that Now, my hair is just past shoulder length, wavy-curly, frizzy. I live in Florida so that doesn't help. I feel like I can never consistently make it look good 🫠
SpreadsheetSiren@reddit
Same here. Forced to have boy-short hair and I did NOT have the bone structure for it. (My head looked like a potato sitting on my shoulders.)
I’ve worn it shoulder length for 30 years now.
techchic07@reddit
I went through the same thing with my mom. She would cut my hair herself and she had no idea how to cut hair and would butcher it. She decided she wanted my hair to spike on top for some reason. She cut it so short I could not curl it with the smallest mini curling iron. I was so embarrassed for many years.
Grand-Moose8294@reddit
Same! My mother always insisted on the Mary Lou Retton or a short bowl ( and once a perm ). She still thinks I have long hair to spite her ( I’m 53 and she’s 80) 😂😂😂 it’s really not that - I just know I won’t style it everyday when chucking it into a pony ( or a braid if I’m feeling “fancy” ) is so much easier!
lmstarbuck@reddit
Omg same! What the hell is that? I was not an attractive kid with brutally short hair and now my mother-in-law is carrying on the torch trying to get me to cut my hair short. I have a chin length Bob I really like it and I die at myself one thing I’ve always been proud of is having nice hair. I went prematurely gray like my mother before me at around 27 so I’ve been dying it since then I don’t know. Hopefully I have good sense and will be able to stop before I look ridiculous right now I’m 58.
Ndrew64@reddit
Wow, I thought it was just me!! I have really thick hair that sheds a lot, and my mom made me cut it short. I was often mistaken for a boy (my jeans and sweatshirts look definitely played into it). I wasn’t allowed the grow it out until I was a junior in high school. I’ve never worn it short since. I love my long hair and won’t be cutting it any time soon!
Emotional_Mess261@reddit
My grandmother was almost 90 when i realized she had hair to her mid butt cheeks. I was staying with her and went into her room, she was brushing her hair. She’d always had it in a bun with combs. I was like 9, didn’t know what her bun was. I don’t remember wondering why her hair was round on her head so it was a bit shocking to me, then I watched her braid it I’m going out like my grandmother.
goddessmoz@reddit
Once when my Granny was visiting us, a neighborhood kid saw her after she had just combed her hair before braiding it and putting it up in her customary bun. Her hair was pure white and waist length. The kid ran away screaming “WITCH!!!” I vowed to be like Granny one day.
littlemetalpixie@reddit
May we all hope to be as awesome in our golden years as your grandma and u/emotionalmess261 's.
RedHeadedStepDevil@reddit
I stopped the hair dye during covid and although I miss the color, I don’t miss the upkeep. I let it grow out until I had enough color to cut off and now it’s to the middle of my back—longer than it’s ever been in my life. I always wore it short, but decided to see how long it would get. It’s still going—a mass of grey waves and curls. I typically wear it in a ponytail or pulled up in a big claw clip. There’s too much hair to leave it down for long, especially since I hate it in my face and it gets hot really fast.
Last week while at a retreat, there was a black woman who was wearing a scarf in her hair that went around her head, almost like a turban and held her dreads back like a ponytail. I think I’m going to start practicing to see if I can replicate something like that. It looked funky and 100% awesome.
NoKatyDidnt@reddit
That sounds really pretty! I love black hair styles, and I’m always checking them out enviously. I’m a white lady with thin, straight, mouse brown hair with gray highlights. Probably going to cut it for summer to just touching my collarbone. Right now it’s just a couple of inches longer than that.
Spiritual_Victory541@reddit
I feel like I was you 2 years ago until my long, thick curly hair started giving me headaches when I wore it up. I live in the deep south, so I have to wear it up pretty often. Walked into the salon during 100+ temps and told them I wanted it cut off to where it just touches my collarbone. Wasn't sure how I felt about it until I washed it, and it didn't take all day to dry. I've ended up really loving it.
I say do what makes you feel good.
gigilovesgsds@reddit
Me too. If it pulls AT ALL, it gives me a headache. On the flip side, I can’t stand hair touching my face or back. So, until something better comes along, baseball cap and ponytail.
Spiritual_Victory541@reddit
I feel that. I've gotten to where I can't stand my hair touching the back of my neck. My go to this year has been a ball cap and pigtails. I'm 53, menopausal, and give zero fcks if I'm too old for pigtails. Lol
morthanafeeling@reddit
I do the one long kinda side braid thing. Putting my heavy hair up gives me migraines as does even changing its direction much. The low sorta side braid doesn't pull my hair in any real direction and gets it off my neck when I feel like I'm on fire every other random minute...🥵
Spiritual_Victory541@reddit
I did that, too, when my hair was long enough. Braids are the only comfortable way to wear my hair for any length of time, besides down, and that ain't happening till January because South Alabama has 2 suns
I loved my hair until menopause. It's rough. I had to sort of reinvent myself to wanna drag my ass outta bed every morning. Seriously though, cutting my hair off helped my hot flashes tremendously. It's a lot healthier, so I can wash it every day, which makes them so much more bearable. I'm starting hrt next week, or I'd probably shave my head completely 😅

There are plenty of great ways to enhance our natural grey and make it look fantastic without doing the ‘complete dye over it method’ Have a look on YouTube as there are plenty of women our age that have celebrated their grey and it looks gorgeous (lots of low maintenance ideas and tips).
morthanafeeling@reddit
Thank you 💜! Right now I feel like everything is hard. Getting up, not being in pain or staying out of pain, basic self care nevermind how i look, and giving a crap. Feel down and defeated. Maybe soon things will look up, I'll get some life back and I'll start to feel worth it.
No-Country-2374@reddit

Poor you. 😥. Im so sorry.
Individual-Contest54@reddit
ME , Too! ( My hair is straight, barely turning grey at temple's) I have hair to my butt at 72, because my narcissistic mother bugged me everyday to cut it in a pixie! I am a very cool old lady, love jeans & peasant tops.
morthanafeeling@reddit
You sound fabulous!!!! 🥰🥰. So growing up youd never know i had curly hair cause my mother screamed all the time about how it was "too thick and looks like a rats nest" - so she was always having it cut. Pixie when I was very little, then chin length and brushed into a mop. Because brushing thick thick curly hair majes it look like a big puffy mop. Then she'd yell at me again that it looked like a mop, and it'd be back to get it cut - "And Thin It Out!" LOL. She sadly died when I was a kid. But I know if she were here now she'd be mortified by this "rats nest". 🤣 (plus in her generation especially (she was born 1930) running around at 58 yrs old with hair flowing down to your waist was a big bowl of wrong. And idc. 😘✌️
Individual-Contest54@reddit
It sounds like my mother, she was a very sour mother. She just turned 91 in May. WE ARE ADULTS, we can do what we want. Oh honey I wish I was 58 again. I was divorcing my 2nd pig of a husband that took everything in my world except for my pets. I am gearing up to go after the $300,000 that I am owed. I filed divorce in 2009. For all of my friend's , I want to warn you about what they are calling the "Gray Divorce". It is happening a lot. Men get into 50's60's and decide to run. I personally know of one other lady who is going the exact same thing. Hope you guys are careful, its the real pits to be renting at 72 when you bought your first home at 23!
morthanafeeling@reddit
I have jeans and peasant tops too!! And very long tiny-beaded multi color earrings. 🪬
Individual-Contest54@reddit
Love them , will wear them to the end!
TxJacey@reddit
Mine is only to the middle of my back but thin & fine. I keep it pulled back in with a hair tie because it is so straight & won't hold curl. My mother always kept my hair chopped off to chin length. I remember sitting there crying one time when I was like 11 because she had been slacking on getting my hair cut & it was almost as long as it is now. She never cared what I wanted. I have kept it long for the most part since I was about 17. My hair is a really light blonde & I always hated it because for some stupid reason, people assumed because of my hair color that I was not smart. I had begged her for years to let me dye it red & she never would let me. So around the same time I stopped cutting my hair short, I started dying it dark red. I took a break from 2017 until 2022 & let it be blonde. It was right back to people thinking I was stupid. I started off with a dark red in 2022, & my kid also ordered a bottle of dark purple dye. So when I needed to do my roots for the first time in 2023, I decided to see how the purple would look & my hair has been dark purple ever since that day. I'm in my mid 50s so I will never let anyone else tell me how to wear my hair again.
quasi2022@reddit
I also have purple hair. The white highlights and grey start showing after about a month, but do not care. My hair is really thinned out due to perimenopause, but it's still wavy and down to my mid back. I love having vivid hair.
MariChloe@reddit
Almost 60! I’m 59 lol my silver and dark brown hair is to my waist! It’s very thick. I’m never cutting it! Every time I leave the house I get compliments. You do YOU
morthanafeeling@reddit
I admit that my hair gets noticed & complimented all the time, the way it did when I was young...it feels like the one pretty thing about me that I have left.
I have never - (even as a child) - cared about trends, about wearing "what's in " or about fitting in. Much rather be in the woods listening to the birds or visiting lonely elders or dancing barefoot somewhere. I've always danced to the beat of a different drum in certain ways. Some people (I'm sure) think im weird. Who cares - I am!!!!! But it doesn't bother me! We're all weird, in our own ways.
Thats what makes us humans - Unique, one of a kind. Not robots. So if my clothes are "out of style" or "look (insert adjective here)______", idfc.
Good self esteem isn't something I have much of, and I feel like a failure most of the time. But one thing I do know in my heart is that I'm a really kind and loving person. That, and a short, 58 yo out of shape woman with waist length curly red locks, who still has a little girl inside of her who likes the birds and loves long hair. 🕊🧚♀️
MariChloe@reddit
Same. I’m 100% that old hippie girl.
morthanafeeling@reddit

wickedlees@reddit
Girl, mine was to my waist, I literally cut it to where it was gray in 2020, I'm 95% gray & white. People come up to me and tell me how beautiful it is all the time. I say go gray!
morthanafeeling@reddit
I absolutely hate the upkeep of color. Hate it. But with my skin tone I honestly do look half dead with it grey and that does bother me - i feel like there's nothing attractive left about me.
wickedlees@reddit
It's SO freeing! I actually shaved mine & I LOVED the 1/4" hair, but my husband thought I looked like a boy 🤦🏻♀️ man! Was it easy to care for
morthanafeeling@reddit
Did you, anyone, watch The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel? The very end, now an old woman, watching tv "together on the phone" with an also old Susie Myerson? My hair will look just like Susie. Except she looks fabulous. I'll look lifeless. 💭
wickedlees@reddit
lol I hated mine the first couple years because I felt old. But now I embrace it
NatPF@reddit
Can you have them try to bleach out some of the strands where it is more grey, like highlights, to break up the solid line of grey marching down your head? My hair is lighter than yours and straight, but I did that and it helped blend out while I waited the few years it took the color to grow all the way out. I wasn't willing to sacrifice the length.

I love this! I’ve always had very long hair. I lost it all during chemo three years ago and now it’s even longer than before I lost it, almost to my waist. It’s fine hair but curly now and kind of messy and frizzy, but other than trimming off the ends myself every so often, I decided I’m never cutting this! I quit coloring because in 2018 for a few reasons, but one reason is because those damn gray hairs don’t hold the color very well & within 2 weeks I could already see them making an appearance so felt like it was a waste of time & money. And now I have even more & I don’t care

I started to get gray strands at 27. I have a lot more now, and I'll have more. Actually, they seem to be bright white these days, so at least that's nice. I also just let them be. I went through phases of dying my hair, but it was like basically various shades of purple, so not really hiding anything. I just don't care about that shit at all anymore.
MarsupialMisanthrope@reddit
I could have written this, but I did a wider variety of really obviously dyed colors. Nowadays I can’t bother with the time or expense.
I am still really tempted to get an oil slick look though, it looks so cool, but also like it lasts for a week which is keeping me from committing.

I get more compliments on my gray hair than I ever did when it was brown. I’m also pretty low maintenance with it in general- wash, blow dry, sometimes curl to get it to calm down (it’s fluffy if I don’t). I have it cut just below my shoulders with long layers and it’s easy to maintain. I put it on a ponytail or messy bun if I need to get it out of my way.
SignificanceWarm57@reddit
My hair is used-to-be-red weird ass “blond” for the most part. It’s about mid back with bangs and a few layers because I have natural waves. I always have something in it. A barrette, bobbie pin, pulled back with a scrnchy, bun whatever. I never did dye my hair when it was red and I sure ain’t gonna start now.
Gloomy_Industry8841@reddit

NoKatyDidnt@reddit
I’m using the shampoo and conditioner from Hers. Great stuff!
RealEstorma@reddit
That’s my next option! Thank you
NoKatyDidnt@reddit
Absolutely! It works great! If you have dry hair you may want to add a leave in conditioner (something light) before styling, but it helps the appearance of my hair already after a week. I can’t wait to see what happens after it actually has a chance to grow in a bit! Nutrafol vitamins are also a winner, though a bit spendy. They really do work, as long as you keep using them.
RealEstorma@reddit
I’ve been on Nutrafold for about 2 bottles (😭 or 6-8 months) and my hair keeps falling off

Specialist_Long_1254@reddit
So there’s hope? Mine seems to be thinning but at least I started from a good thick place. It’s bra-strap length and I keep it about there. I wear it up for work, either with a hair stick or more commonly braided. I don’t like ponytails, I don’t like putting in the scrunchie or taking it back out. Rubber bands (the good, wrapped ones) are only for braids. I’m also still coloring, the henna options are so good these days.

Chopped it into a really flattering cut and embraced the highlights. Did a whole herringbone color thing and now I have beautiful silver highlights and no roots. I love my hair and think the color suits my skin tone, and I am surprised by how much I love my shorter hair. It’s so easy to style with an air styler and looks so cute.
enola007@reddit
Used to spend hundreds every few months color & cut, but now I color my own (extra light blonde in box) & is actually healthier than ever & looks better than if went to salon. Trim split ends myself.
LaLa762@reddit
I don’t know if anyone will see this because we have so many comments, but I cut my hair into a bob, which I love. And I stopped fighting the silver at my temples. I went to my stylist and had two streaks bleached out to silver, so that the grow out would be relatively seamless, and now I have some Disney villainess streaks. And I love them. I prefer to think of myself as Madame Adelaide Bonfamille, but I know who I am. One other thing I do? Is color only my part and like a half inch on either side of it. This way I don’t have any roots “showing“, but whatever sulfur is in my hair can grow out under it. My working theory is that if I ever decide to stop coloring it all together That the silver underneath will blend out any roots at my part and make it easy. But, if that doesn’t work, flipping my part to the other side, will absolutely make it possible.
Psychological_Air682@reddit
Im like you. But I added purple. Lol. Arctic fox. Super conditioning and it will eventually wash out.

kembr12@reddit
It's almost 1:00 am as I am reading this post so I am not quite fully awake.
I read your post and pictured "armpit-length hair" as meaning very short hair like "au natural" armpit hair like okay,, very short. Strange way to describe what I would call a buzz cut but you do you.
Then reading that you use a banana or claw clip in it. Wait....what? How?
Luckily my brain woke up to understand what you meant.
I feel so smart (not quite) and tell myself to put awAy my phone until daylight when I can possibly comprehend what I am reading better.

Thank you for the hearty LOLs! 😍😂

💀😂💀😂💀 I wrote that late so maybe that’s the issue as well. It’s longer than shoulder-length, but not mid-back either. I couldn’t think of another way to describe it, then thought, well, it gets caught in my armpits sometimes, so armpit-length? 🤷🏼♀️

I have a chin length mohawk (undercut all shaved out to. 2 guard) that I style in a bob or pigtails. I’m 51, a grandma, and I don’t give a shit anymore about who thinks what about me. When it’s worn in a bob it’s sharp and looks great, which works when I’m in a business meeting for my robotics company. Once we’re funded I’m going to rock pigtails as my brand. Too few women run tech companies, even less are true to themselves. I need to make it easier for other women to do that.
Beelzabobbie@reddit
Hell yeah! Had one like that in my early 20’s and now that I’m 50 and grown I’m thinking about going back!
Argyleskin@reddit
You should. I’m so tired of being told by online and magazines we need to dress our age. I’m not my mom or grandma, I’m not going to wear clothes I feel weird in. Concert tee’s, jeans, Chucks and doc martens make me happy so I’m staying with it. I do however wish I had a wee smaller waistline haha
MissDiketon@reddit
I’m 54 and I paid good money for my concert shirts, Chucks, and Doc Martens. Hell yes I’m wearing them!
NoKatyDidnt@reddit

demonpoofball@reddit
LOVE my Chucks and Docs (I even got the 3" heel Chucks recently, that go with my 3" heel Docs!) (my legs have always been more comfortable in a heel…). I do admit that I bought a pair of the platform Chucks though as they're MUCH better padded for walking :D (I do still have my others, but not if I'm going to be on my feet for hours upon hours…)
But, yeah… For far too long my mom would constantly tell me I shouldn't dress like I do… uh… I'm sure as heck not going to dress like her! I've never understood why that was always some sort of accepted expectation prior to our generation… Besides, I'm too cheap to buy new wardrobes, I wear what I've had for however long! True vintage :D (though damn peri shot my weight up, so a lot don't fit right now… grumble…)
Beelzabobbie@reddit
I refuse to dress old too…and I have the kind of job that won’t give two shits…I’m going to do it!
NoKatyDidnt@reddit
I love this!

Word! Had a blue mohawk until 2 years ago. (I'm 52, no grandkids yet, also female) I miss it. I had a frozen shoulder and couldn't maintain it, so it grew out. Was literally talking to my hubby about what color this time. lol
Keep rocking your badass hair! I bet the pigtails are 😎 !
Hell yeah, on the robotics company, you go with your brilliant self, Sis!!!
Argyleskin@reddit
No shit I had a frozen shoulder too! I got it from a badly placed flu vaccine, got me right where they’re never supposed to. Hope yours is better, it took two and a half years for mine to go away.
And thank you, it’s hard without connections in tech with fat wallets. Awards and accolades out the ass, we’ve gone viral twice, in the news etc but even though we’re doing things before giant tech companies we’re being overlooked because we lack the connections. Such a shit show. But I’ll keep trying!
AtroyaBelladonna@reddit
Mine was from a fall down a flight of stairs. I hit cheek and shoulder first at the end. I was fine until a couple of months later when suddenly my shoulder didn't work right. lol. There were a lot of problems with scheduling physical therapy, so I looked up the exercises online and did it myself. Apparently it's a very GenX thing to do. I told the doctor, "Look I need my range of motion back, your lack of staffing is now my problem, so I can do it myself." It took almost 2 years to get it all back.
Yes! Keep going! Keep networking. Talk to everyone. You never know when you're gonna make that one connection that changes everything. It could be in line for coffee. It happens. Sending you allll the good vibes!!
Repulsive-Bag8349@reddit
Omg. Amazing and exciting! I hope everything goes smoothly and works out the way you want it to!!
Argyleskin@reddit
Thank you! I’m trying, it’s hard to hustle when the connections aren’t there. It’s a who you know scenario instead of we have an amazing robot people have been asking us for in troves and we can’t get them made fast enough for them. It sucks. I care for our special needs adult son and do business/robot stuff all day, hubs works full time and does robot stuff when we gets home. But I keep keeping on!
hidingdazzle@reddit
Fellow mohawker here too but shave my sides to skin in the summer. I have super thick hair and will keep this cut until I die. I get so many compliments on it. Rock out with your hawk out!

I work in tech and one of our VPs rocks blue and green hair. We had our user conference a few months ago and I asked her what we should wear on opening day - previous VPs wanted us in business casual. She looked at me like it was the last thing she was worried about and said to wear whatever you want.
MonkishSubset@reddit
No lie, I’ve been dreaming about a mohawk lately. A long one that I can braid up. Although I’m not sure it would look at all good on me… getting to the point where idgaf though.

Growing out a pixie. Layers are key. It helps make the grays be like highlights.
Missela@reddit
I have basically the same style I’ve always had (chin length bob) but with less product. No more hairspray. I have fine, thin, dark blonde hair, so I have to keep it styled short or else it looks stringy. But most days I end up putting it up anyways. Bonus, no gray yet. Same color and texture it’s always been, maybe a shade darker?
BluebirdLimp4295@reddit
Shaved it last year, not buzzed, shaved. It was glorious, I am considering doing it again. I've given myself tractional alopecia because I tied it back for so long,
and I hate the bald spot in the middle of my head. This was last year.
antiseesaw@reddit
mine’s growing in but bald is the best
MacabreAngel@reddit
Nice! I just buzzed off all my hair last Sunday. Got sick of the ponytail, tired of messing with it. Convinced my husband to shave it off. I like it, but damn, my head gets cold!
BluebirdLimp4295@reddit
Think of all the funky fun hats, beanies, and such that you can wear now!!! I also recommend not forgetting sunscreen for your head as part of the daily routine. Congratulations!!! My husband couldn't do mine because he's blind and I like my ears. Huzzah, for the buzz cut brigade!
MacabreAngel@reddit
Lol you've got great ears! I hadn't thought of sunscreen! Great advice, thank you!

Fuckin' hell. You go girl!
BluebirdLimp4295@reddit
I used to love my hair, then I just hated my hair because it had gotten thin and dull and washing it was just one thing to much to do. Shaving it off was the best thing I have done for myself in a very long time. Granted, growing it out was an adventure in WTF, still might do it again. And thank you, as a fat, white passing Cuban woman, this isn't the look most people would expect from me, but I felt glorious.
tangledweebledwevs@reddit
I've thought about doing this. would you mind a couple of questions? What kind of reception did you get? I know we aren't supposed to gaf, but I have wondered. Or did it just feel so true to you that it didn't matter? How was the maintenance? What made you grow it back? TIA!
BluebirdLimp4295@reddit
Reception was really interesting. The men were VERY uncomfortable. One of the leaders of the company I worked for at the time made it his mission to remove stressors from my job so i would grow it back. The women all looked shocked and a little envious. You know, I wouldn't do it, but I wish I would do it kind of thing.
For me, personally and as honestly as I could put into words. It was magnificent. I needed to get rid of the hair that was beginning to feel like a burden. I will post a before picture and an after picture. I promise.
Maintenance was a breeze. Two or three times a week, I would go over my head with one of those razors that curve over your skull. They market them for bald guys.
I grew it back out because I was going to marry my honey,
and I wanted to see if the break from having hair had done anything to make me want it back. Nope. I've pretty much decided I am going back to bald at some point.
tangledweebledwevs@reddit
Thanks so much for your response! That was helpful. While I wish you had the hair you wanted, its awesome that you are feeling the badassness of your bald self and would consider shaving again.

I wear my hair just past my shoulders and am fairly grey in both temple areas. I mostly allow it to dry naturally. Mine is super thick and somewhat wavy, so I mostly let it lay, pull back just the top with a clip or barrette, or by hair wash day, then a ponytail. I do have to use conditioner now, and while I don't dye, I do add clear gloss which helps keep it healthier and more manageable. So a couple of minor tweaks - conditioner and gloss, but otherwise, still mostly air dry, occasionally allow to mostly dry and then straighten with heated brush.
FeralBanshee@reddit
This weekend I’m getting caramel brown with highlights and extensions à la Cindy Crawford in the early 90s. I’ve had long black hair for 25 years I’m tired of it.
Every_Selection_6419@reddit
I absolutely refuse to stop being on trend… at least sort of! I had my stylist cut really soft blended layers, so I can curl it, I can straighten it. I can wave it. I can make it voluminous. I can pull it back in a damn ponytail. I keep it about 2” below my shoulders or slightly longer or shorter. Regular shape ups every 8 weeks at the most.
I think the key is something that is somewhat versatile for you depending on your lifestyle. I work in a professional job, but I actually work from home quite often. I’m single and I’m dating but yet I also want to be low maintenance. I have natural red hair so I’ve never had to color my hair. That’s the only blessing of being a ginger I believe!
Google images of women, your age hairstyles, color, just start browsing & see what works with your face shape & coloring, & what draws you.
You can do whatever the fuck you like you know? That’s the beauty of being Gen X. Whatever feels comfortable for you whatever you like, do that first.! do that always

I'm 55, and still dyeing my long (not quite to my waist) straight hair dark purple. It has nothing to do with covering my grays, of which I have like 12, and everything to do with wanting my hair to be dark purple.
I wear it down, French braids, pony tail, or bun. You know, all the things you do with long straight hair 😂
bookworm1421@reddit
Thank you! I’m 47 and my hair is cherry cola red. I’ll be dying it forever because I don’t want to be gray…unless I go gray like my Mama. Her hair is a gorgeous silver.
I don’t have very many grays yet though.

My natural color is sort of a mousy light brown / dark blonde. What is sometimes referred to as dishwater blonde.
I can't even tell you how much I love my volunteer work. We provide daytime respite for homeless women, including hot breakfast, showers, clothes and hygiene, and baby supplies. We have a separate family area for moms with kids because sometimes the main patio can be too much for the little ones. Single dads are also welcome to receive baby supplies. We also provide mail, package and message services, which I what I mostly do.

I get a keratin treatment called Cezanne. No nasty chemicals, and it doesn’t totally take away curls/waves. It allows me to let my long streaky silver-and-dark brown hair air dry and wear it loose without looking like a bag lady. I do it twice a year during the warmer/more humid months. It’s $400 and worth every penny. I figure I’m just making up for all the money I’m not speaking on dye, lol
doveinabottle@reddit
I was fully silver by 35, so gray is nothing new for me. I wear my hair in a butterfly cut.

This is what I’m thinking of doing. I’m beyond tired of paying $200 a pop for cut & color every 7 weeks. I haven’t been to the salon since March. I see some grey growing in, and I’m thinking I’m just going to roll with it. The wolf or shag is exactly what I was thinking. I haven’t cut my hair in 30 years, but it’s time to revisit old skills.
Pointedtoe@reddit
I used to stretch mine out to 3 months but I hear you. I have very dark hair and stopped coloring during covid, and I actually don’t have as much as I thought. What I do have has banded together to make some nice grey streaks in front. It’s freeing not to worry about it anymore.
XxThrowaway987xX@reddit
Yep, I appear to have 3 streaks that might look cool when they grow out. The rest is salt and pepper, but the streaks are cool.
Pointedtoe@reddit
The salt and pepper tends to blend in, in my experience. That surprised me too. I also thought the colorless hairs would be wiry and unmanageable but that’s not the case at all.
OnlyPhone1896@reddit

Lately I've been sporting an undercut pixie with long bangs, that I color platinum lilac (it's basically silver with a hint of lilac purple hue) with a very dark, almost black, shadow root. It looks AH-MAZING when it's fresh. Takes literally 2 minutes to dry it after a shower, and no time at all to style. I love love love it.
Daghain@reddit
When it's 90 degrees in the middle of summer the undercut is a godsend.
jennypenny78@reddit
Oh 100%. I happen to live in the 7th circle of hell (at least during the summer months) so it's nice not to have all that bulk as my hair is quite thick and naturally wavy, and of course the first place that starts sweating when I'm hot is the back of my head; keeping it shaved is like built in air conditioning.
patquintin@reddit
I keep it short. Pixie cuts require zero attention. Wash and wear mostly, use a dryer and product if I want something special.

I’m still sporting the long hair throw it in a pony tail or knot just because I know won’t style it everyday - I feel dressed up when I put chapstick on lol Here’s a question along the same line though
Has anyone noticed a change in their hair texture? I’ve always had straight light brown hair and in the last few years it’s become wiry, easily tangled, and difficult to brush especially when wet - there are a few greys here and there but you have to really look to find them. I do have it trimmed on regular basis and doesn’t look burnt out and I’m not seeing a ton of split ends …
Quirky_Commission_56@reddit
I have naturally curly, very fine hair that’s very dense. I’ve got a grey streak in my bangs and a silvery grey patch on my left temple that I shave down so it really sparkles in the sunlight. It was long enough to go past my shoulder blades but I live in Texas and it’s hotter than hell so I cut it to shoulder length. I usually wear my hair down, but put in a hair clip or ponytail when I go outside.
These-Restaurant7001@reddit
My hair was past my butt, I've almost always had long hair, the times in my 20's when I had short hair I went really short, a European Bob, I loved it, it was easy to fix, I also kept it highlighted, but apparently I was the only one that liked it, now im 45, and I had it cut just below my shoulders because I couldn't take it no more, its stick straight, was heavy, all I could do is wear it in a bun, it was a chore to wash it, I couldn't stand to wear it down, falling out by the handfuls...I like it much better just below my shoulders, its way more manageable, now color wise, I hate it, but can change that, just do what's easiest for you.
moonluva508@reddit
I have fine super curly hair. Thinning to boot. So I chopped it off and now it's almost a pixie cut but not quite. And boy am I gray but I could not careless.
cyclonesandy@reddit
Whatever it wants to do. Wisdom highlights all over and a bit of a streak of silver in the general area of my part. Wear it down on wash day then it usually ends up it a high pony until it’s time to be washed again. All natural colour, haven’t had any colour in over 5 years and have had a few decent chops off the length. And if you don’t like how it looks , look away.
BeerWench13TheOrig@reddit
I’m a wash and go girl too. My hair is long and usually ends up in a messy bun. I wear it down occasionally, but not often, especially when it’s hot.
I use Sun-in during the summer to blend in my grays, but there’s still a pretty pronounced streak that I’ve had since my late twenties. I’m just too lazy to bother with keeping up with a dye job.
Waggonly@reddit
Very cool. Sun-in only ever turned my (light brown hair) orange.
BeerWench13TheOrig@reddit
Mine is light brown too. The first application is orangish, but after that, it’s blonde.
itsmyvoice@reddit
Rocking the grey/silver/white streaks in mid-length waves. Most days it's just wild and free, no product.
Sometimes lately I use a couple of barrettes and it's cute. Looks full and keeps it out of my face. When I can't be bothered, I use a claw clip and put it all up in a twist.
MotherOfGremlincats@reddit
My hair is darkish brown with some grey shot through, it falls to my mid back, is curly/wavy, and very thick. I sometimes think about coloring it, but I'm not invested in it enough to actually do it. Usually, I keep it in a ponytail, messy bun, or French twist of some sort, and I alternate between letting it keep its natural texture or blow drying it straight.
Capital-Cheesecake67@reddit
I am rocking that pulled together styled bob every day. With a great cut is versatility. Today I washed and conditioned, put in a little styling cream, and because I was feeling lazy I hand scrunched it to play up the waves. I got it cut, colored (red stripes on Saturday), and straightened. I kept it combed and refreshed with a little dry shampoo. A good cut makes all the difference.
hi_sarah98@reddit
I have fully embraced my long salt n Pepa locks! Some days I look like a witch and that is just fine with me lol. Air drying with the car windows open ends up looking scruffy for sure
I did buy a blow drying brush for when I want to look more polished. I like it a lot more than a regular blow dryer
Auntie_Venom@reddit
The first time I read this, I thought you were using a round brush while driving with the windows down 🤪 (seriously something I’d probably do, since I often air dry with the windows down too)
KetoLurkerHereAgain@reddit
Way, way back, I used to put my hair up in velcro rollers and then drive to work with either the windows open or the heat blasting, then finish styling in the car.
Auntie_Venom@reddit
I love that!!! I used to do something similar… Velcro ones didn’t work on my hair, it was too long and my commute to school was a couple of blocks… After the crunchy perm days, I went in with a wet messy bun long before that was a thing that I still do. But if I actually did my hair, I’d use those pink steam rollers, they worked great! I’d take them out right before walking in for that bouncy beauty pageant big curl look.

OMG, yours is so pretty! I have some gray at the temples but the rest of my natural color is that dull mousy kind of between medium brown and blonde and some grays mixed randomly in. princessdumpsterfire@reddit
Gorgeous!
weepingangel7@reddit
I've started cutting mine to a little below my shoulders with layers and shaggy cut. I have fine hair but it tends to have a little bit of a curl and waves with this type of hairstyle and makes it easy to wash and go. I do color my hair since all my white hair is all up front and nothing in the back so it makes me look like I'm balding because it's that bright white almost translucent type of gray hair so my fine hairs look like they disappear against my scalp.
Tracie-loves-Paris@reddit
I have the same bob that I had when I graduated high school in 1984.
The only difference is I used to be able to just step out of the shower add some gel, finger comb it and be done but now my hair has become curly so I actually have to blow dry it if I don’t want it to be frizzy.
WinterExisting5076@reddit
Long layers. I have straight hair and at 56 been dealing with menopausal hair thinning. Not a lot if grey so far!
Irresponsable_Frog@reddit
Same hair style since I was 4. Just different length. I have that shit wave but pin straight otherwise Hair. It’s either a long bob, a really long bob or a really short bob. No bangs. Been silver for 2 years now. I wouldn’t mind looking like the crazy old lady! I tried different kinds of layers but my hair is too thin. I have a ton of it, but it’s THIN. So blunt cut. If long it’s in a bun and if short, it’s wash and wear. Not high maintenance at all!
Proper_Ear_1733@reddit
I don’t care about the gray nor what anyone thinks. I have gone shorter due to menopause and probably won’t go back. I do have to use a leave in conditioner now bc the gray has a weird coarse texture that sticks out all over the place otherwise.

Washed and went all my life. Kept it long as started to go grey but saw a picture of myself one day and I swear I looked like Carol Kane in The Princess Bride. Have cut it shorter but still don’t do a damn thing to it.
LoanSudden1686@reddit
Mine is 100% silver at 48, and it's long. I had a health scare a few years ago that cost me 1/2 of my hair, so I'm never cutting it again! I wash 2-3 times a week, one wash is T Sal then Loreal Wonder Water; the next wash is psoriasis shampoo mixed with Olaplex Purple followed by Olaplex Purple conditioner. I do an Olaplex mask every couple weeks. 90% of the time it's air dried and down, parted in the middle, up for workouts or yard, blow-out for fancy occasions. Screw society, Im embracing my Madam Mim era! Out of Fs!

I grew my hair out about 30 years ago so I wouldn’t have to “do” anything with it. I wash it about every other day if I am in public, every third or 4th day if I am at home. I am a big fan of the claw hair clip. I have to use a smaller one now.

Post-chemo curls w lots of silver. Dyed pink on the ends and a stripe of bangs. The silver is pretty but it washes me out being so fair.

I’ve started getting blow out keratin treatments because my salt is way wilder than my pepper, and with the conditioning it all falls together nicely with no effort - just air dry and go. I do it when I get it cut every few months. (Wavy, side part, layered to shoulders)
DameKitty@reddit
My hair is to the bottom of my shoulder blades. I've been getting grey for 20+ years now.
I buy hair dye (the heavy pigment temporary kind) and have fun.
My almost 5 yo likes it red. I wear it in a ponytail or two inverted braids most. (Where it looks like the braid is on the outside and all the hair goes in under it) I'm not going to cut it because I can care for it myself. I let the grey come in. I'm happy to have hair.
NotPennysBoat721@reddit
I keep it from shoulder length to mid-back, and dye the hell out of it. I just can't let the gray come through.
BokBokBagock@reddit
Do what you love - and don't let anyone talk you out of it! I'm 51, and I have straight dark hair that's past my waist. I have a gray streak that's starting right up front. I'm planning on going gray naturally. I mostly wear my hair tucked behind my ear on one side, and it all cascades over my shoulder on the other side. Sometimes I wear it in a bun or I tie it into a low ponytail with a scarf.

I’ve been keeping my hair (loosely curly) a bit longer than shoulder length and dyeing it with a blue dye that doesn’t require bleach. When the dye fades, my hair becomes this cool blue-gray. I like that it has kind of a witchy vibe.

I went ahead and let into go all grey it's a blend of grays and white but surprisingly I don't look as old as I was worried about I don't wear it as long just a pain to care for so shoulder length now

I don’t even know what my natural color now would be! I was born as a blond and I will die as a blond. KiwiSilly1175@reddit
You might be surprised! I was born a strawberry blonde, then it blonded out. I started coloring it light red again in my 40s. After about ten years, decided to grow it out. Folks think my silver is platinum blonde. It’s an amazing color my hairdresser says would cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars to do in a salon. I love it!
Thatstealthygal@reddit
FWIW I've been going grey since I was 14 and stopped colouring at 43, revealing hair that got me more compliments than I'd had since I was a child (when I also had striking hair), so don't think about it as looking old, so much as being COOL.

Hungry_Spring_9079@reddit
I stopped coloring it two years ago. I love the way the gray is coming in but it's taking too long and I'm impatient. I keep threatening to pull a Brittney (no shade to her AT ALL) It is getting longer and I'm passed getting a bob or lob. A pixie was my favorite cut but I feel like it will age me (I'm 52) and I miss having long hair every time I cut it. I use a lot of bobby pins and do a messy bun, with the right accessories it even looks good enough for the office. Or I use an octopus clip and twist it up with curls on top (boring work do).

ancientastronaut2@reddit
I wash it every other day and put a little leave in conditioner on the ends and volumizer at the roots and do about a five minute blow dry just enough to smooth it out a bit and so it's not totally limp.
I have fine hair and a bob. Boring, I know, but I am all about low maintenance now. Luckily I only have a few grays here and there, but I get highlights every couple of months and it covers them well enough for now.
And the only reason I bother with the highlights is because of how the dye makes the shaft of your hair fatter, thus giving me the appearance of slightly thicker hair. Otherwise it's too mousy.

I rock the pixie cut. When I get up in the morning and look like a deranged cockatiel or Don King, I'm calling my hairdresser. The awesome thing about the cut is that it takes less than 5 min, hair cement on damp hair, a swish around, hairspray and it's done for the day. No brushing, no fussing, wind doesn't bother it. And if I'm not feeling it, I throw on a baseball cap.

minot_j@reddit
Wait, what did your mom say about old ladies having long hair? I noticed this divide when I was younger and I’ve wondered about it for decades. I looooooove salt and pepper hair (I’m just going pure screaming white like my grandfather, which is fun too) and I wondered why all the grandmas made it so boring by putting it up into a steel helmet.
I fear that I missed a cultural norm that explains the whole thing! My mom dgaf, so her shoulder length boring white lady hair is now shoulder length beautiful sparkles.
Fairycharmd@reddit
my mom is a pretty proper stick up her butt kind of person so absolutely my mother should not be used as anyone else’s yardstick to measure what they shouldn’t should not do.
But to quote from the last argument “mature ladies do not have long messy hair” and she means that as a dig about my age and as a dig that I’m immature as a person
So again nobody should give a shit what she says. But I do think women have a certain age just didn’t want to deal with their hair anymore and chopped it all off. Not sure if that’s generational or cultural or?
But certainly my grandma (‘32) and all of her friends, I’ll head short hair with permanents.
Anxious_Public_5409@reddit

My late husband loved my crazy hairs and loved it when I wore it down and free. My hobbies involve work with a lot of machinery so I usually have it tied back for safety. It is also in Texas. Literally pulling a crazy hair from your sweaty buns is not the best fun around. 😆
Cheetah51@reddit
My hair has changed from fine, straight to fine, wavy.
The grays are multiplying and they aren’t the beautiful silvery gray a lot of of you have, but a dull, tarnished gray.
So I henna color my hair. Do the roots every two-three weeks and my hairdresser puts some blond highlights into it.
The pros: Henna does not fade and the quality I buy covers grays completely. It’s very healthy for hair and makes fine hair thicker/stronger. No chemicals.
The cons: Henna always has an orange base. In sunlight my head glows. The more layers of henna, the darker it gets but it still glows in sunlight (even if dark mahogany). I can’t pull off super dark hair with my aging complexion but for those that can, henna+indigo is a great option.
KeepnClam@reddit
I phased out the color with demipermanent for a year, then let it go. I use a purple shampoo and conditioner pack when it starts to look dull and drowsy. Collarbone length with curtain bangs. It's the easiest way for me.
Like some of you, my parents forced me to wear a pixie, when all my girl peers were wearing ponytails tied with yarn. It was weird, because my little sisters all had long hair. Infuriating. Now I have occasional nightmares that someone has cut my hair short, without my permission. I wake up, fr a ntic, and check that, yes, it's still there, and I can go back to sleep.
Invisibella74@reddit
I have really striking silver hair (thank you, dad!), and I wear it in a shoulder length bob. It's very easy to manage. Wash, a little volumizing foam, and a quick blow dry does the trick. I don't even have to use hairspray or anything. I throw the sides back in a barette when I work out to keep it out of my eyes because it's not long enough to pull back into a ponytail.
I get constant compliments on my hair. Both the color and style.
Here's a crappy selfie from a recent concert I attended. I'm not the best selfie taker. Lol

I'm 57 and started growing out my highlights about 2 years ago. That accomplished now I'm waiting for the grey to grow out. It has really started to show lately.
As far as style, I'm embracing my natural wave. Also it's well past my shoulders which has been a rare situation over the years. Usually I kept it shoulder length as an adult but have gone short at times like I had it in school. I've had many hairstyles thru the years. I've settled on long hair and don't like it short. Frankly I look like my mother with it short and I love her but it's not a look I like on me.
I will say I am debating getting color done again but can't decide what. I am dirty blonde with grey around the temples. I don't want to go too blonde as I saw that last weekend and it washed the person out. I also don't really want back on the coloring train.

I am just starting to go natural after dyeing it for about a decade. My stylist is going to use a clear gloss that tamps down the wiry silver hairs so they lay flat. I think that will go a long way towards preventing the crazy old lady look. If I could have any type of silver hair it would be this style, but it will take a while to get there, because I am only 51 and probably just 20% gray at this point. I hope I go gray exactly like this. Her hair color was the same as mine (dark brown) when she was younger, so fingers crossed. And my other former brunette hair idol is Emmylou Harris.

Pixie cut I barely style, but with purple highlights. I pay money to get it done well. I get compliments at least twice a month, some from university students! As the purple fades, it does a funny blending with the silver and turns into shiny lavender.

I went through 2 or 3 times to bleach out my box dye and then threw bright pink with purple highlights on my hair. It will fade fairly fast but what’s underneath will be what my “ real” color is now. I just plan to do temporary fun colors until I croak. And I turned 52 in April.

EvenSkanksSayThanks@reddit
god that sounds amazing. i have a shag too but not the bravery to shave a side. doesn’t it thin it out??
StanleyQPrick@reddit
Not so far!
catplausible@reddit
It doesn't for me either. I lost between 1/3-1/2 of my volume this year because of health issues. I worried about taking even more hair away, but just having it shorter/layered gives it so much more volume than I ever had before, and shaving the side takes the volume only off of that side, which is the whole look. And I still have tons of volume if I let my layers fall over and partly cover it.
catplausible@reddit
I just did this myself, but with shoulder-length layers (minus the purple – one of these years when I have extra energy I'm going blue). Lost like 12" of weighed-down length and now it's all springy and wavy and basically styles itself. Next cut, I plan to go harder on the layers, I LOVE them.

Imaginary-List-4945@reddit
I've always had straight hair, but the last couple of years it's decided to turn wavy underneath (and only underneath), which makes it harder to just let it air dry. Very weird.
At the moment, I also have about three inches of grey roots because health issues have prevented me from coloring it for a while. I've seen a lot of women my age who look fabulous with grey hair, but sadly I am not one of them. So as soon as I get clearance to use dye again, the grey is going bye bye. Knit beanies were my friend over the winter; not sure what to do about the bizarre two-tone look now that it's warm outside.
AJKaleVeg@reddit
I too would like to look good with grey hair and unfortunately it just makes me look old all over. I grew out the gray during covid hoping that I would be ok with it. Yuck! So I dyed everything blue, and then green for a few years, which I loved. Now I’m blonde and frizzy and feel so so boring.
Imaginary-List-4945@reddit
Right?! I don't understand how it can look so good on other people and just makes me look like a witch, and not in the cool witchy way.
I think for me, part of it is the mismatch between my visual memory of how I'm "supposed" to look and how I actually look. I was blonde for a few years a while back, and people told me it looked good, but it never felt quite right. As soon as I dyed it back to brown, there was an immediate sense of "ahhh, there's the real me."
AJKaleVeg@reddit
Thats so true! Oddly enough thats how I felt when my hair was deep blue-green. My face looked brighter!

DogOfSparta@reddit
I wash my hair in the early evening. Put some mousse in it, let it air dry or just close to dry. Do a french braid at bedtime, with the start of the braid a few inches from the top (so the top part is not curling when I take it down). It is comfortable to sleep in and I just take it down in the morning. My hair has natural wave/curl to it and that helps. A little bit of hairspray and it looks like I spent time on it. Medium brown hair with silvery grey here and there. I have not dyed it in years because my scalp is too sensitive now. I like my hair more these days than I have in a long time.
Competitive-Fact-820@reddit
I envy you - I cannot french braid my own hair to save my life. Been trying since the mid-90s and just can't do it. Now I have some weird tendon issues going with my hands that make my fingers lock at random so not risking trying again as they have locked once whilst just doing a braid from the nape of the neck and it took me ages to unfreeze them whilst my shoulder joint started screaming.
I do razor off about 2 inches up from the nape for a small undercut to get rid of the weird baby fine hair that grows there and always messes a braid or bun up.
DogOfSparta@reddit
I have been doing it since the early 90s. My mom and I went an enrichment class at the local college. The advantage to the ones I do before bed is they don’t have to be pretty. But I understand it isn’t worth the risk for you and would not do it in your situation.

Shoulder length hair here and I tend to wash and wear. I mostly style my hair in a messy high bun, which works great for work and casual settings. I noticed more grays in the front area framing my face - and I don't mind coloring the roots to keep my natural shade intact (black).
GloomyGal13@reddit
I rocked waist length hair for most of my adult life.
A couple of times I got a Bob haircut - just to shake things up. Then grew my hair out again.
Now that I'm a respectable crone of 57, I returned to the Bob, with a twist.
Hot flashes are hell, so I shaved my head bald from the top of my ear tip to the other, leaving a curtain of hair that was the Bob cut. When my hair is down, it looks like I have a Bob cut. When up in a teeny tiny clip you can see my shaved sides.
I enjoy 2 cuts in one - stylish Bob for daytime, Undercut buzz for night!

I don’t have any gray yet (54yrs) but I found that longer hair actually aged me quite a bit. I’ve always had fine hair and had to mess with it for an hour every single day to make it look decent. I’ve gone the Pixie route, but people kept calling me sir (😂), so now I have a chin length layered bob. All I do is put some leave-in conditioner and a little foam and then let it air dry.
BadHairDay-1@reddit
It's currently in a big clip. I'm trying to decide whether I should let it grow longer or get an easy cut. I'm not interested in styling my hair one bit. It's past my shoulders and I look better with long hair, but I just want something that looks neat and clean, without looking like I'm wearing the hair of a child or old woman. It's a conundrum.
Myfanwy66@reddit
Long hair. Fully natural grey/white/silver/black. I will not cut my hair short. My mother kept my hair short when I was a child and it traumatized me. Still does.
zenmaster_B@reddit
Not a lady here, but my Xennial wife had long brown hair, no grey, but she got sick of trying to style it every morning. She cut it into a short pixie and dyed it shock blonde, like Roxette. She looks amazing with it, especially because she has ice blue eyes 👀
UrAntiChrist@reddit
All those complaining about thin hair. OGX brand, protein bond shampoo and biotin conditioner. It worked so well my hair lady complains it's too long and thick. I took like 6 months but it worked.
wickedlees@reddit
I have natural curly hair, I wash, blow dry, then curl in the style I like 😳 it's cut into a layered cut, it an 80's adjacent look. Lucky for me it lasts a few days before it's literally wash & repeat 🤷🏻♀️ it's shoulder length at this point.

If you still have hair (unlike my incredibly fine mess) rock it however you want for as long as you want.

I have a haircut that I can just wash and condition twice a week and then I put in leave in conditioner and just rinse the rest of the week. I comb it out and that's it. Super easy. I don't have to use any other hair products or a blow dryer or other hair tools. I definitely prefer it this way. I do, however, bleach and color my hair neon pink with the help of my fiance every couple of months.

I have it back in a pony tail most of the time. My hair is so fine now.I miss my thicker hair

After 3 weeks there is a straight line of grey. I’m holding on as long as I can. I work in the car business and we live in Texas heat. last year I had my hair up all day with the grey line. When I took it down it was curly everywhere and I def had the bat shit crazy thing going on. But I CANT cut my hair. And I’m not left the grey grow out.
So I have no advice. Only, I understand the bat shit thing you said

My mouse- brown hair has so much gray, I’m getting it highlighted so that it looks more blonde. I did some pink highlights, but they washed out. It’s so dry and hard to keep from being frizzy. I totally understand now why older women have crazy hair.

I have long hair. It goes to the middle of my back. Since I live in Florida, I wear it in a ponytail or bun. I’d like to find a new style but I don’t like short hair on me…makes my already full face look even more full. The top of my hair is mostly gray and white. I’d dye it platinum but I don’t really want to spend $200!

I decided to lean into my grey hair in my early forties. I had been going grey since a teenager and was so tired of dying it.
Whenever I start to feel guilty for ordering another book, I try to remember how much money I save on my hair. I get a proper cut once every three years maybe? Do it myself the rest of the time.
trapped_in_a_box@reddit
I cut mine into a pixie years ago. I will probably die with this pixie cut. I keep it platinum blonde (hooray for all that time screwing with my hair color in high school). I don't even know if I have grays at this point.
G01ngDutch@reddit
I have curly (like 3b/3c) shoulder-length and I just wear a high pony all the time. Wish I could think of something else to do with it. If I wear it down (VERY rare, needs to b a great hair day) it annoys me.
Moonstruck1766@reddit
I can’t stand the grey hair on me. It’s like wire and frizzy. I’m keeping my shoulder length hair and spending the money to get it dyed for now. I don’t have much grey yet. I have mine cut in a V in the back and graduated in the front. I wear it down most of the time.
I have friends that have beautiful salt and pepper hair styled in bobs. My hair is too unruly for a bob. The length helps keep it under control.

Hair down to my ass. Really nothing but wash and conditioner. I don’t color my hair because my grey hair doesn’t hold color, but I got white hair taking over. I’ll rock it! Most of the time my hair is in one long braid.

I have an asymmetrical bob with the underside shaved (it doesn’t really show- I have just enough length). The shaved bit helps keep me from over heating.
I have a natural wave, so I wash, scrunch, and go.
CadenceQuandry@reddit
I dye my greys about every 3-4 months. I use the curly girl method to keep the frizz down. Essentially what you think is frizz is really just your hair getting wavy or curly. Figure that out and you'll be fine. Might need to to start with a clarifying shampoo.
WillowLantana@reddit
Long layers. Fully gray after decades of dying it. Lot of times I’ll put it up with a clip. If you’ve never used a sleep bonnet, now’s the time to start. Get the one that you can tie. Much less frizz & not having my hair all over the place helps me sleep better. Got mine from Etsy.

If you do, go to a beauty supply store and get your ingredients there. Box color is still terrible for your hair. I hope you love it!
New-Entrepreneur4132@reddit
Pre-COVID I would style it everyday, usually straightened. During COVID I stopped torturing my hair and just let it grow. I ended up with lovely waves/curls and was able to grow my hair long. It was so easy to style and I only wash a few times a week but wet it and add leave-in conditioner to smooth it. I recently got it cut to shoulder-length and it has so much more volume. I used to spend too much time styling my hair now it’s minutes.
Jzak73@reddit
I’m 52, I stopped dying my hair in my late 30s. It just doesn’t hold dye. So far my grades are actually coming in a very silvery white and in streaks. I have two streaks that frame my face so I like them and I leave them. I go between long hair that I set in loose waves, or a long inverted bob. I got lots of compliments on my hair. It’s funny because my hair is the bane of my existence and I have to torture it with heat to get it to look decent, the people like it. Go figure.

I am turning “blonde” naturally, so I decided to lean into it and go platinum/silver. A lot of work, but it looks good!
Superb-Ag-1114@reddit
Mine is a little longer than shoulder length, and the gray is still under control with 3x/year highlights. I'm 57 and I do take a vanity dose of dutasteride to keep it thick. This seems to be the easiest setup to me as it doesn't need a lot of daily attention - I can wash and wear or for special occasions run a curling iron through it. As I get more gray, I don't think I'll be willing to keep up with a full color job multiple times a year - I'll probably cut it into a chin length shaggy kind of thing. I'm a natural strawberry blonde and we go gray in a pretty ugly and dingy looking way imo - not silver sparkles like brunettes.
Glittering-Review649@reddit
Chopped it all off to a cut pixie cut and had the little bit of black hair remaining lifted in color to appear honey blond and all of my gray hair looks like highlights. I look 10 years younger. My hair was bra length, thin feeling, and boring. My hair cut makes me feel sexy and has changed my look. I love it!

Curly (2C) so too much brushing/styling makes it frizz. Mostly still thick so have to have layers
The one difference I have noticed is that it doesn’t grow as fast. I used to need to cut 2” off every 3-4mo. Now I can get away with once or twice a year.

I've been a short hair girl since I was a Dorothy Hamill haircut wearing child in the 70s - and it's still short. I went through a long hair phase in the early 2000s but never really knew what to do with it so eventually I cut it off and went short again. It's very Madonna circa 1986-87, short & spiky and I keep saying that my color is "going blonde."

Most days I have ponytail w/ bangs. I’m not gonna start coloring it, don’t really mind the grays and that’s too much upkeep. I’ve cut my hair many time for change but I think there’s enough change happening to my body right now so I’ll just let it grow. Maybe I’ll trim it when it hits my butt.

Been shaving mine down for 5+ years now! There’s many greys, but when I shave it every 3 weeks, they are barely noticeable!
Love the convenience, the coolness, the no pulling and heaviness, the ease to just wipe a cold cloth over it after a hot flash!
Probably not for everyone but I love my bald head! I feel prettier without hair and I used to have below shoulder length thick blonde hair. 🤷♀️

I also was in the long blonde hair club. I swear when it all came off, I felt younger and more myself. It has been an amazing feeling and I don't think I could ever go back to having long hair again.

Same! The idea of having hair longer than 1/2” (length it gets before a reshave) grosses me out.

I have slightly longer than shoulder length hair, strawberry blonde with some of those glitter strands starting to show! Most days it's in a ponytail just because it's heckin HOT and I refuse to get the old menopausal lady standard short haircut. On gym days it'll end up in a braided ponytail bun on top of my head and honestly it can stay that way for a couple of days. 😂 Like, I don't want to deal with long hair but I'm not going to cut it.
I've never colored it but I'm not opposed to the idea when it goes all white because of course we can't have a graceful graying period, oh no. It's straight to white for me.

I cut my long hair off a few years ago and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. It's short around the sides and back, but has some tousle on the top. My straight hair gets so thin and flat when it's long, but when it's short, it looks fuller and thicker. I don't dye it and have magnificent white streaks through cool brown darker hair. I only wash it once or twice a week, yet get compliments on my hair almost every time I leave the house. My only regret is not doing it sooner.
Before cutting it off, it was a ponytail all day every day.

Ugh. I can’t do grey yet. I just can’t. Luckily my hair girl only charges me $60 for my monthly appts for cut, color, style. But I’ve been starting to go gray since my 30’s (turned 50 this year). My mom kept coloring her hair (and then I did it for her when she couldn’t) until she was 81 (and stopped only because dementia is a fkn mean bitch and made her hate it). I fear I may be that person as well.
My hair is mid back length, longer than I’ve ever had it. Dark brown, auburn highlights, long layers, long bangs. Straight as a stick unless I curl it. Pony’s and up in a clip allll summer.

In 2019, I just cut it all off. That’s when I discovered that my younger brother is my twin. (He’s the one with the beard, lol. Though some days…) Now I am growing my naturally curly hair out. I refuse to color it, and those grays have a mind of their own- sometimes they just decide they want to be straight. But it’s the hair I was given, so I just let it do its thing.

51 and I've been wearing my hair long (halfway down my back) since high school. Started dyeing it red in 2020 cuz I wanted to be a redhead after decades of being a brunette. Wash it 3x a week and just let it dry on its own into a natural wave. I'm retired, so I'm lucky I can just let it dry on its own.
MutedLandscape4648@reddit
I braid and colour my hair. French braid(s) look nice and I end up with a nice wave - more controlled than my natural curl/wave. Also, bun on top! It’s easy and a classic.
I colour my roots/grey, sometimes i use something that lets the grey pick up a pink tone, sometimes something normal, but I also enjoy just having pink/blue/purple under section(s). I also have thick hair and it is cut into a lot of layers, so this all looks intentional and/or fun, mostly bc the cut is good.

I wear ponytails and a head scarf since there’s much wisdom to having one outside just religious reasons. It helps keep sweat out of your eyes, hair out of your face when gardening or other work, simple accessory without spending a ton on a beautician. There’s tons of options like a bandanna, or really pretty or really simple wraps depending on what you’re wearing (wish I realized this when I was younger and spent so much time and money on my hair trying to keep it not so crazy and curly) Nothing wrong with touching up grey hair here and there, but will natural color of your hair or grey highlights to blend in.

Depends on time constraints; but I typically wear my long hair in a bun to work. Sometimes, I let my curly long hair freak flag fly and wear it down... but it takes some patience and product to tame this mane. I had it short and grey before Covid hit, then went hot pink for a time...now I stick with platinum blonde. I have been all the colors; black to white... and since I am not too fond of now dull my natural silver white hair is... I will dye religiously for awhile.

I'm more salt than pepper at this point. I stopped dyeing it in 2020, and am attempting to pull off a crazy old lady look with long grey hair. I'd say it's about 50% light grey, 30% darker grey, and the remaining light brown. It's just past my shoulders now, and straight cut. I do a bun at work at times, but other than that, nothin. I (still*) wear no makeup beyond a little coverup on a scar.
pittsburgpam@reddit
I'm 61 years old and had hair down past my knees, just trimmed it for over a decade. All I did was wear it in a bun, rarely wore it down. Even more rarely would I blow dry or straighten or style it in any way. Then I was going on a week vacation with my daughter and granddaughter and got it cut. It was kind of a relief to not be washing all that hair.
I got it cut again just before going on a cruise last year. Nothing fancy, still long enough to put in a pony tail. I'm rocking a white streak in the front, which I really like. After dying it for a long time, usually a red tone, I'm happy with my totally natural color now. I'll just let it grow out white. My sister has totally white hair and it's really pretty.

My hair is baby fine and has thinned a bit as I've gotten older, so I have it shaved heavily on one side and not as heavily around the back and other side, with hair left on the top and long bangs that could either be quickly pulled behind my ear or held back with clips or let hang over half of my face. Women in my family don't really go gray, and I'm lucky as I still have naturally dark blonde hair with low lights, which my hair stylist says is not very common to occur naturally and takes a lot of work to fake.

Not sure if I will keep it or let it go. I’ve already got some length back. What I will never give up is the undercut I asked for - only in the back and below the ears. I am so fucking sick of coloring my hair. My hairdresser is phasing my hair into the gray, because I have such a shitload of hair. I would just bite the bullet and dye my entire head gray, personally, and be done with it, but it might be too much of a shock for me.

So many long hair with purple! 70 this year- grey in front and some long strands! Very cool. Everyone loved my purple. Ponytail for fieldwork and farm. Shorter now bangs growing back.Shorter since kids were freaked by all the knots after 6 weeks in hospital

I have curly/wavy hair medium brown color. I just pull my mid back length hair into a loose messy bun to the back of my head with a hair claw clip. Nothing fancy, no products. Rocking my rogue silver stripe
delee76@reddit
Stopped coloring it because I like the pattern of the silver and white. I had it short for a few years but am growing it out. It’s shoulder length at this point and I have bangs. I wash it and dry it and night and just brush it out in the morning. Easy.
Agitated-Level6688@reddit
I'm embracing the gray and recently started getting lowlights to show off my beautiful natural silver stripes at my temples. I have dirty blonde, short , thinning, fine hair that I've been cutting myself for 30 yrs. It's fun to try different things but I always have to style it since it's so flat and lifeless. I've learned to work with it but have always wanted long, thick hair sigh
JillForceOne@reddit
I love letting my silver hair take the spotlight. I have long, dark hair and I'm on the younger side of Gen X, so I don't have many silvers yet, but I haven't colored my hair in years because I'm so excited for them. I earned them!
Style-wise, I really like the "robe curler" method. I can prep my hair before bed and wake up with it already styled. The curls last for days since I only wash my hair every 3-4 days. The lived-in curls go great with coarser hair texture, bedhead, or frizz. Absolutely fantastic.
Spiritual_Victory541@reddit
My grays are course and wirey so I color them to make them soft and shiny. It recent years, I've started wearing it a lot shorter. The weirdest thing, though, is that my hair has always been wavy/curly. It looked pretty much exactly like Sarah Jessica Parker's hair in SATC. When I cut it off, it fell almost completely straight.
AnUnexpectedUnicorn@reddit
Mine is baby-fine but I have a lot of it, it's a wavy, silvery-blonde. I'm actually really liking my hair at this phase - I colored for 30+ years, stopped during covid cuz all the salons were closed and my DIY looked awful, so I let it grow out. Got it cut into a shaggy pixie when I lost a lot of hair after a serious illness, and now it's past my shoulders with a few long layers. I can wear it so many ways - most days, I use a little wavy hair product (Lange is my current go-to), and just dry it a bit with a diffuser then let it air dry, or it does well with rollers, curling iron, big round brush, etc if I want a different look.
Bitter_Pill_7679@reddit
My once curly hair is now thinner and stringy, and I stopped coloring it, so now I'm rocking the swamp witch look. When I look back at pics with the short, colored professional 'do that i wore in my 40s, it's like I don't even know who that person is!
MedievalMousie@reddit
I wash it and french braid it while wet. If I’m feeling fancy, I twist the braid up with a spin pin or hair sticks.
If I’m doing something where a braid will be a liability, I do two French braids, wrap ribbons or cotton yarn in the elastics, then use the ribbons to tie my braids up in a crown like a Tudor housewife. This is very protective and can be good for several days.
Scotsburd@reddit
I've reverted to my 80s big hair.

The brown is fading to grey, but the red is coming out. Anyway, wash, a little dry shampoo, put up with 4 hairpins...haven't cut it in 25 years, but my hair was always babyfine, so it's shoulder length.
reallycrystal@reddit
I use a hot brush everyday and wear my hair down. I’ve had the same haircut since high school with long layers and a side swept bang. I have a cowlick right where I side part my hair and my silver/white hair comes in strong right there and frames my face. I’ve been graying gracefully for 10+ yrs now and use purple shampoo to keep it bright.

I've always had the most annoying, think, course, wavy, dark hair. In the 90s it was long and permed. Then in 2001 I got Pixie and never looked back. I used to have highlights and lowlights, then just lowlights, and since 2020, I've left it natural salt n pepper. It's mostly low maintenance, and I'm all for growing old gracefully. My pixie has lots of texture, so it gives my options for how I wear it. Short hair, don't care!
decaffei1@reddit
Wear it long the day I wash. Wear it in two ponytails or braids for sport whenever. Wear it high ‘loop’ (tucked under single pony) or a low one sided pony over one shoulder on days 2 and 3 and wash again on day 3 or 4. The further from a fresh wash the better the bun holds—!

I am rocking mine down, which hits my clavicles. I have 2C waves that had pretty much relaxed from dying my hair. I finally decided to stop dying it (at 48) and it was the best decision ever. It took me a minute to figure out what curl products work best for my hair. I just let it air dry. It takes me just a couple of minutes to apply the product (Aveda Curl line and Blue Malva shampoo/conditioner). Now my sliver hair sparkles, the waves/curls are defined and no more frizzy mess.

Kenderean@reddit
I let it go completely grey about ten years ago, so I'm rocking a full head of silver hair and I love it. Right now it's long but it looks so thin when it's this long so I'm probably going to cut it into a long bob soon. I don't have the patience for maintenance or regular cuts so when I do get it cut, I go to the most expensive, upscale stylist I can afford because those cuts last a lot longer before looking like shit.
demonpoofball@reddit
My hair is actually pretty much what it was when my cousin decided I should have a side part when I was like 16 :P Though quantities of hair spray are certainly less now! Roughly to my shoulder blades with bangs (I've always thought of my forehead to be too big to not). Not dying it either as it's always been so many different shades of technically blonde (from medium to dark blonde) with some auburn, and it'd be an obscene price to have anything remotely similar done to it (not to mention I've always cut my own hair anyway, so…). I did start using SunIn again though! :D It always worked really well with my hair color(s), and since I avoid the sun (unlike when I was way younger…), it lightens up the ones so the whites (not gray, full on white…) blend in better.
I was kinda lucky that in my 40s my hair started getting wavy rather than the completely straight it had always been, though it does take actually using hair product to not be frizzy… but I try and remind myself that I always wanted wavy hair when I get annoyed about that… :P

Just had mine done today! Let it go completely gray during covid, and it was okay, but grey has never been on my colorwheel, so I took a risk and had it died light brown, and dark blonde along with a third of it stayed grey and I'm loving it! The brown and blonde is a much more flattering color for my medium toned skin. Just had it cut into a simple pageboy and had a layer of shine put on my hair.
I'm loving it. Simple, classic, but with a bit of zing!

Mine is curly. Like super curly. I have the perfect hair for 1984. Unfortunately I was in high school in the early 90s when straight, sleek hair was the thing. And I can straighten it but it takes an hour & since I luve in Florida, it starts curling again within an hour. So I have big, curly hair. Still have way too much though so even if I start lising a bunch- more than my normal excessive shedding- it might actually look normal.
CountessOfHats@reddit
I let the colour grow out over the Covid lockdown. 99% grey and white save for a few surprise reddish holdouts here and there. It’s not as thick as it once was but it’s still pretty full, curly-wavy, and long.
Basically I look like Frankie Bergstein (Grace & Frankie) if she didn’t colour her hair, scarves and all.
I embrace it. My life goal for this stage is to become the neighbourhood ‘crazy old lady in the weirdly coloured house’ and I’m right on track.

I have dyed my hair different shades of blonde since I was 16 and don't even know what my natural color is! Ha. I have dark eyebrows; my four kids have medium to dark brown, one almost black, hair color, so I assume I am in the brown shade family. My stylist told me I'm at least 50% gray now, but the blonde color hides the gray pretty well. I am 56 and in March had my hair cut the shortest it has ever been. My husband loves it, and I like the cut, style, and ease of care. But I am growing it out, and it grows so slowly. I had it cut and colored on March 26th, and my roots are just now starting to show. Shoulder length, straight hair with wispy bangs, not this short layered look. It just doesn't 'feel' like me, ya know?

Do you know the weirdest thing? I’m 48 but still haven’t had a grey (or a white) yet. Apart from one random white hair. On my chin. I’m not complaining, don‘t get me wrong, but it is deffo a bit odd.
But it has got lanker and greasier as I’ve got older. Maybe it’s perimenopause. I wear it down (shoulder length with a long fringe) but I’m starting to have to think about tying it back more often.

I have colored my hair since I was 15. Usually red, but I have been blond as well. This year I turned 50 and thought, fuck it, I want to see the brown hair I was given. I have a few grays here and there. It use to be very straight and in the past couple of years has gotten to be quite wavy with even some curl. And thinner. Sigh. I just wash my hair and pull it back into a ponytail.
Possible-Fun4225@reddit
I stopped dyeing my hair around 2021. I'm full salt and pepper now, and I don't care. I found some products for gray hair and just do routine hair care. The most I use for styling is some heat protection, a light gel to help shape it, and some hairspray.
PsychologicalBat1425@reddit
Ugh! I'm in a similar situation. I have always had long hair, I still have long hair. I'm a natural dishwater blonde, but I have a lot od whitish gray hair that has come in. It all blended okay for a while, but now it's much lighter than it ever was when I was young. I don't know if I'm disciplined enough to take up the hair coloring game.
Second, when I went through menopause it got wavy with some tighter curls. It used to be straight. I don't know what to do with curly/wavy hair. Hair is not something I like to fuss with. Sure I had the big hair on the late 80s, but I'm not up for that kind if maintenance.

I don't have much grey yet, but I have always colored it dark (I'm blonde). I think I will slowly go back to my natural color since the grow out is annoying and what grey I do have will blend better. Time to have something like a style!

I haven’t had enough energy with chronic health stuff the past few months to do anything with it as far as color. There’s a little silver, but nothing too bad. It’s still long, but I did trim it about six inches, so to the upper middle of my back and it’s looking nice and healthier. I’ll usually either wear it in a ponytail or a chignon at the back, but if I’m dressing up or something, I’ll leave it down… if I’m really feeling fancy I’ll make it into some curls and have some old school Andie McDowell/Kennedy hair going on. I’d love to do that everyday, but energy is limited and I just can’t maintain it.
I had a much older, actual witch friend when I was around 20 and she had long, gorgeous silver hair. It’s been my goal for 27 years to wear mine like when it fully turns silver!! I WANT the gorgeous witch of the woods hair with some kind of cape! Or shawl - I’ve made plenty, so bring it on 😂.

I rock a curly messy chin length cut with a bit of layers. I let it air dry after scrunching some curl cream in it. Sometimes I’ll add a few curls with hot rollers (ugh; I’m old), but I don’t brush it until I’m ready to wash it again. I haven’t used hairspray in like over 15 years because I’m never like, “Wow! My hair looks so great that I want it to stay this way”.
I still get highlights/lowlights every few months, but I’m fooling nobody.
If my mom were still alive, she would probably be tempted to tell me to brush my hair.

I went gray prematurely and started to grow it out. I wanted to dye it all gray to speed along the grow out process to blend my long ends with my gray roots. But dying your whole head gray requires a complete bleach process first so I’m doing it slowly over time and having fun with it. Right now it’s platinum blonde. Next maybe pink. Not sure what’s after that. But I’m still rocking long hair. I will never change that.

My stylist and I agree that she won’t tell me when I go gray. For 40 years I had long straight hair. I’d made peace with it by the time I was 40. After losing it all after chemo ended, it has grown back 3x as thick and curly. In winter I wear it down, but it’s been too warm for that nonsense so I typically sport a fluffy messy bun, and keep breaking the tongs on the plastic claw clips.

My hair is really straight, fine, and a little past shoulder length. I stopped getting highlights in 2020 only to realize that my gray is more shiny silver than gray. I blow dry it upside down so I get a little lift, flip it up, part it, a little hairspray and I'm done for the day. On days I don't feel like drying it I put it up in a pony. Both are easy and I'm not going back to short hair because it's too much work to get it to do much of anything. I get more compliments now on my hair and color than I ever have.

Mine has gotten long because I stopped bothering to cut it. My daughter cut a few inches on it a year or so ago.
It's dark with grey/white, and I leave it loose to dry. Then I wrap a twist and put a claw clip on it, part it and twist it into "space buns", braid it, put it in leather hair gloves I got at Monument Valley, clip it is some pottery barrettes I made, etc.
Whatever is laying around, gets my hair out of the way and the wind.

My hair is the longest it's been since I was a teenager, about to the bottom of my ribcage. I wash it, put in some leave-in conditioner to tame the frizziness, and air dry. I keep mine just a bit past my shoulders these days, and dye the gray away constantly I want no part of it or what it means because I am NOT getting old.

I dye mine platinum and wear it wavy or straight, down to about six inches below my collarbone in front and the bottom of my bra strap in back, just as I have since I was 19 minus bangs. It helps that I already look 15 years younger than I am but still. I’ve got more gray than I realized (thanks stressful career) framing my face, but you can’t tell since I’m naturally blonde. They look like highlights.
I got wispy side-swept Claudia Schiffer bangs, it looks even better when I loosely clip it up like her too.
the_lazykins@reddit
I agree. Hiding those forehead lines with wispy fringe gave me a boost of self esteem.

Wash, brush, spray heat protectant, blow dry. That’s about it. If I need it out of the way, I’ll put it in a low side pony.
Mine is long (mid back?) and very straight and I have a lot of it. It’s a wide range of silver/grey/white tones with maybe a tiny bit of brown left. Started going grey at 16, and given people in my family grey really nicely, I’ve never sweated it. Rather, I embraced it. I’ve had far more compliments on my hair in the last 10 years than in the preceding 40!
hikingyogi@reddit
Mine is about waist length. I'm getting a bit silver. I started growing it out shortly after I turned 50, I'm 58 now. I'm too frugal and lazy to keep it in a "style."
I have started dressing more 'old lady" just because cotton dresses, aprons, bib overalls and no bra is more comfortable and I have no fucks left to give.
I also wear my hair up most of the time. Mainly because I live in the South now and it's too hot to wear it down. Pigtail braids are a favorite. My sisters and I call them Wednesday Braids.
CandleSea4961@reddit
I color mine still. Long. My hair is going silver/platnium, but it’s washing my complexion out- I’m a very very pale blonde. I keep mine in a high bun most of the times
JihoonMadeMeDoIt@reddit
I went a bit cray with the colour for awhile bc grey hair absorbs the vibrant semi permanent colours beautifully. I did blues, then magenta, then purples. Joico is the best they have beautiful rich colours. Then I got sick of it and went back to black.

Messy bun, every day. No exceptions.

Mine is waist length and several colors, most of them occurring in nature, though not necessarily naturally on the human head. I'm good.

Just chopped off my long hair. Grey looks like highlights now.

Mine is also long and clean. I had dreads but they were too heavy so now it’s boring hair for me. I don’t ever plan to go to a short old lady hair cut though.
Sinieya@reddit
Got tired of the long to my waist hair. Which was very fine and starting to thin...
Cut it all off into a pixie and dyed the top bright pink. A simple tousled look and I'm ready to go. Beats the hour it would take to wash, comb, and braid every night.

I’m 50, I just cut off 8 inches and wish I would had done it sooner. I’m in the perimenopause stage and have had some thinning on my temple area. I love my short hair. I wear little low pony tails, braids, puffs, bandanas. Or I just put profit and leave it. I color it if I feel like a change but usually I let the grays show. Just a normal part of aging

I cannot wait until I get more white in my hair. I’ve always wanted blue hair but didn’t want to bleach my hair
GlrsK0z@reddit
I let it gooooooo. It is long and gray. My daughter is hair stylist and she adds bright pink, blue, teal or whatever to the bottoms so I don’t feel like I’ve lost my muchness. It took me two years to decide to let it go gray but I love the freedom of it. I wear it long because my previously straight hair is quite wavy in its gray era. I can pin it up for regular days and leave it long when I need to be fancy.
Dry_Umpire_3694@reddit
I go to the barber shop and get an undercut bob. I do have to flat iron it because my hair is wavy but it lasts me 3 days. I started coloring my own hair too now that it’s short it’s much easier to do.
Jacki_Me@reddit
I started getting white/gray hair when I was 18, been coloring it until a few years ago. I was tired of coloring it every 6 to 8 weeks for all those years, and the fumes were starting to bother me. It took about 2 years or so to grow the color out. Now I have mostly white hair and I love it. It's healthier looking and right now it's shoulder length. I either wear it straight or I let it air dry and then it's wavy/curlier.
heldaway@reddit
I have a shag “alt cut” and I’m embracing my natural texture. I used to be the daily blow out girl but as I age I’m losing density and I’m trying to protect it as much as possible.
I’ve recently overhauled my entire look and I feel really comfortable in my skin. My grays are starting to come in and I’m letting them. Haven’t bleached or dyed in years anyway.

I have more grey than my +80yo mother lol. I am a wash and wear pixie cut kind of girl. I often wear a helmet when I’m out riding horses so a pony tail can get in the way, and in the summer I don’t want all that hair laying across the back of my neck. I don’t really care about the greys, I actually kinda wish I had more, but I’m not going to color or anything. I’ve earned every single grey I have so I’ll wear those greys with pride!

I started going gray at 16, and that's when started coloring my hair. I'm currently blonde with gray roots coming through. I've hit that mid-life crisis and don't want to look old anymore. I'll be coloring my hair this week. My hairstyle has mostly been the same my entire life: long with bangs. I've had short hair, layered hair, and bobs, but I hate them. I've recently discovered that I have a natural curl, and I'm learning to work with that. I usually wash and let my hair air dry, but it always ends up in a claw clip or ponytail. Surgical menopause sucks.

My hair is down to my waist, and people think I am getting highlights -- those are my greys!🤣 I have light brown hair, fine, and fairly straight. It's up in a bun most of the time, or a braid. But it looks amazing when it's down and I am determined to let it grow. I faintly remember my parents watching a Crystal Gayle concert in the 70s, and 5 yo me decided I wanted her hair. Took me until my late 40s to figure out how to get that, so I'm not quitting now.

Messy topknot most days. I'm dark blonde with lots of silver. I truly do not care what anyone thinks about my hair :) But I was going to a fun campout and I dyed my hair with some old pink hair dye I had. The dark blonde didn't take the color, but the silver did and it was awesome.

Usually a ponytail. I’m a wash & go girl. Mine hair is wavy and at my collarbone. Just had a couple inches cut off and got bangs. They’re better for me during the summer. I haven’t dyed or bleached my hair in ages. I don’t have the patience to handle all the upkeep. And it’s too expensive for something I don’t really care about.
Latter-Village7196@reddit
I'm still trying to figure it out. I've been trying to embrace going white, skipped grey. If I part it to one side I've got a decent stripe I'm trying to rock, except on virtual meetings it apparently looks like a ribbon or headband. Parted the other way no stripe just lots of white that doesn't blend well. I had been growing it out too in an effort to embrace my swamp hag era, but once it got to mid-back it was driving me insane so I chopped it to a chin length bob. I love it short, but I have no idea what to do with the color.
Rocketgirl8097@reddit
My hair is mostly white. I have never colored it. It's too thin to go short and look good without a lot of curling and messing around. Even if it would work, I refuse to do middle-aged lady short. It stays a few inches longer than my shoulders.
PahzTakesPhotos@reddit
I have a pixie cut now. I got it at the end of 2019 and I've kept the sides and back short on my own with my own clippers. I used to keep the top a little shorter, but I'm now growing that out. I've tried a couple times to let the pixie itself grow out, but then it gets warm and I realize how much easier the heat is without all of my hair laying on my head.
I usually blow dry (on low, with low heat) and then use a weird curling iron to give me what looks like possibly random curls. I think it looks better like that than it does straight (I also do wear it straight sometimes, that's just a blow-dry task).

I do an old Jennifer Aniston "Friends" haircut, when I can find a hair dresser who can and will do it. ( Only about 1 out of 4 can layer with drama.) I still dye my hair a dark espresso color but I leave out the areas at my temples. This gives me a nice face framing white stripe down each side of my face. Looks great in a French braid or space buns. If I want to look less mature, I just tuck my hair behind my ears and it hides my racing stripes. It is my version of aging gracefully.
thecuriosityofAlice@reddit
My hair is long but it is thinning out so much. What are you all doing? Cut it short? Clip in Extensions or wig? How do you out the spring in your 50 yr old self? A Pantene commercial, I am not.
East_Vivian@reddit
I have long hair that’s naturally white in front getting darker towards the back. Still have some dark brown in the back. If I let it air dry it’s pretty crazy, just a frizzy mess. But if I blow dry it looks really nice. Sometimes I give it some wave and it looks really pretty. I have some layers around my face and long layers in back.

Are you really that concerned about what some random kid you don't even know MIGHT think about your personal appearance, that you fought for, I might add? (Existing & thriving in this life is no easy ride.)
Might be worth digging into why you are even thinking this in the first place. Who & what has been telling you that you don't dare to just be yourself, gray hair and all. (Hint: Marketing.)
Your grandkids will survive. Kids will find something else to make fun of them for even if you go full-on artificial color.
FullyRisenPhoenix@reddit
I stopped dying my hair 3 years ago, but I completely changed my cut. It frames my face better now, and is a mature look without being “old” looking. Think professional mom. It’s easy to style and maintain, and the nice cut takes away from the heavy layers of white that have come through. I’ve been going gray since I was 16, so it currently has some peppery under layers but full-on salt along the crown and around. I’ve had women ask who dyed it recently! Lol
Oh! I have naturally wavy/curly hair, and I tried the curly girl method. Was not for me. I love the thought of beautiful curls but I simply don’t have the time for maintenance at this point in my life.

I have thick waist-length hair that I dye pink, magenta, or burgundy. I wash it weekly and it air-dries into loose waves while I’m asleep. Every morning it goes into a huge bun on top of my heard. I just cut it shortish for a change (was below shoulder) and I’m not jazzed about it. But I’m afraid of going any shorter (which would be basically a pixie cut) bc I’m afraid it will turn into that old lady haircut. You know the one.

Very short with funky long bits, naturally white.
My funky long bits have recently been cut to resemble a short bob with bangs and I don't know if I want to go shorter still so it's really a microbob, or to grow back my ridiculous Chelsea cut sides again.

I currently have a bob with bangs, since I cut a huge chunk out for HTMA and wanted to start over.
I color it at a high end salon and just paid for a semi permanent smoothing treatment that's non-toxic.
I do recommend styling a little. That will make more of a difference than color or cut.
I wash, condition, and deep condition with a heat protectant twice a week.
I then blow dry with the Revlon Hot Air brush on low heat. It sounds like a lot, but I actually let it air dry to 80% and then only have to dry for 10-15 minutes. And then I only have to do this twice a week, and my hair looks great on all the other days, with minimal styling.
I also have root spray for when my gray starts to show between appts.

I have almost always had a pixie cut (long hair is not a good look for me!). During the pandemic I ordered clippers from Costco and watched a couple YouTube videos and now I cut my own hair. I don't fuck it up too badly, and if I do, well, it'll grow out. I don't color my hair because I'm cheap and lazy and it always comes out red. I'm also shit at styling my hair, it's fine and super straight and doesn't take product well. So, yeah, once a month I shave my hair off.
Brave-Card4727@reddit
I go to the salon every 3 weeks to cover the white (not grey) roots to maintain my dark blond hair and I also get highlights every other month or so. Due to a missed B12 deficiency, I’ve been fighting grey since 13. I’ve always had long hair with choppy bangs, bc my bangs have a mind of their own. Think a combo of Tifa from ff7 and rhinoa from ff8. It’s long like the first, but the front is more like the second. It was cut short twice intentionally, and once by a scissor happy person who thought I’d like it shorter. Luckily my hair grows quick. I hate it short.
To help my bring bummed about very early grey, my mom would put vivid color steaks in my hair. I still do that. Right now it’s purple and blue. I can try to screenshot a vid where it was purple and pink in October. Just steaks. I still keep what was my natural color as my base. The only time vivid colors were not in my hair was for certain jobs.
Yea, I’m still the same. I got truly mistaken for being 24 at a hockey game. I’m 48. I swear the hair helps. Good skin genes go a long way too. 😂

Same hair, just more and more gray. I dye it with semi permanent color, like blue. It makes my hair look black, except the gray, which just pops into bright blue.
I've been looking forward to being a blue haired old lady all my life and then they figured out how to wash the brassy away. So I do it like we did in the 80s. No bleaching needed.

Be the awesome lady girls can look up to and say I want to be like her. The one who they will remember when they get their first grey hairs and maybe feel proud of them instead of feeling like it’s something to hide. I have grey hair. At home it’s usually up in a clip. I do use hot tools and products so I looked polished in public. I want my nieces to see aging as something they don’t have to fight. Why have another generation of women be insecure about something that’s going to happen to most of them.
Weary_Commission_346@reddit
My curly, formerly red, hair is gradually going white. Looks like highlights with streaks starting from my forehead. The last time I had to show my drivers license at a doctor's office, they tried telling me that my hair was light brown. Noooo, it's not. More like a strawberry blonde going blonder, maybe. I've been going gradually white for a decade. The only red I have left is lurking behind my ears. I miss being an obvious redhead, but I won't dye it. I doubt I could get that color in any case. I've given up salon styling, but I get a cut from my favorite guy every few months. A great cut with layers and plenty of hair product gives me some of the best curls I've had in my life, so I think that's a good trade off.

Started finding a few greys this year and got highlights to blend them like a good middle aged woman does, lol. First time. It was a good run. Some of my earliest memories are of my mom plucking greys in her 20s. So thanks dad.

That crazy old lady frizz is real! Especially where I’m at! It’s gotten to be too much work so I’m getting it chopped off in a couple days. I’ll probably still look like a crazy old lady but at least it’ll be less hair to deal with.
Slimjim6678@reddit
My wife is rocking the grey streaks. I think she’s hotter now than when we got married 28 years ago
Pitiful_Stretch_7721@reddit
Short pixie! My favorite length for several decades. Did an undercut bob for a couple years - to show off my silvers streaks while still being cool (temp) and a little rebellious. Then had a short bob for a couple years because I was enjoying the curls that menopause enhanced. But I couldn’t resist going back to pixie.
RaspberryOhNo@reddit
Got a lot of compliments on my greying hair. I look young and don’t care if people age me for it. Gets you a little more respect and honestly the cost is crazy and box dyes make your hair shit. It is shiny, smooth and beautiful! Power to grey or whatever makes you feel good.
MoosePenny@reddit
I grew out my gray, and I get so many compliments on it! It’s shoulder length with long layers that I can either let dry naturally and be a little wavy, or blow it out. It really doesn’t take a lot of time to do my hair.
Gray can be so chic!

Cut my own hair. I don’t specifically do a wolf or butterfly cut but something kinda like those. No gray or white yet. Not surprising though as my mom is 87 and doesn’t have much gray.
SirLanceNotsomuch@reddit
Not a lady, but I have long hair. It’s green and teal-ish. My natural is middling brown, probably more grey than not now, and the different base colors give it an ombré effect that Kids These Days would pay a fortune for at the salon, if their job would let them.
My job already knows I’m the best at what I do, and my bosses — if they actually cared, which they don’t — know better than to complain about it. Winning!
soleiles1@reddit
Luckily, I still have a full head of long curly hair that immediately put up in a bun after I brush it out from the shower.
Ain't no one got time for that.
brlikethecar@reddit
I keep mine in a ponytail under a baseball cap because it keeps the grays from sticking out at weird angles. (Normal hair texture is fine so it’s never ever wanted to behave whether with a blow dryer or product or whatever.) I actually wouldn’t mind if I went all gray because maybe it wouldn’t just lay flat against my head.
rabbitales27@reddit
I’m growing it long .. I’m a bit ruffled by my grey coming in. But I’m gonna let it get natural and see what happens. I invested in a hair mask, and good hair product. I also got a satin pillow case . Putting it up less.

2 guard all over. Gray patches in naturally very dark brown hair. I love the no maintenance except a trim every few weeks by my husband. I'm a woman. I had the same shaved cut in the late 80s a la Sinead O'Connor.
FeedbackExisting4762@reddit
I wear mine a little past shoulder length. I currently have it dyed dark blue (Pulp Riot's 'Nightfall') because you're never too old for mermaid hair.
I'm currently wearing it in a wavy shag with bangs. It's one of the most manageable, easy to style haircuts I've ever had.
I cycle between bangs and no-bangs every couple of years, though, lol.
CyndiIsOnReddit@reddit
My hair, when I am very, very careful and follow exactly the right regimen AND there's low humidity, looks like Bernadette Peters' if she was to allow some dusty gray and one almost white silvery curl at the temple.
Which is why 99% of the time My hair is in two braids.
Silly-Lizard@reddit
Chin length layered bob with bangs. It’s a little curly so I wash, add curl cream and let it air dry. If I want extra curl I’ll diffuse it dry. I don’t love it but I’m working with a new stylist and we’re working on getting it to something I love. I have never colored my hair so it’s got some gray. Idc.
Starbuck522@reddit
Pepper left the building long ago, lol. I have been coloring my hair for decades. No plans to stop.
I recently started using a heated straightening brush. I am all thumbs, but it takes me less than five minutes.
I don't get much curl anymore, but I do get "poof". I leave it that way the day I wash it. Usually use the brush the next day.
Fantastic-Nobody-479@reddit
I’ve got some silver streaks. Just chopped it off and it’s shoulder length now. It is driving me crazy because it is so dry and tangles easily. I didn’t have these issues until a few years ago.
Dogzillas_Mom@reddit
I’m keeping it simple with a chin length bob, and I’m still covering the gray and changing colors around every now and then.

Asymmetrical pixie, but this is my transition cut from the “Gwen” from Into the Spiderverse. Natural color which is 70% white. Sometimes fashion colors when I feel like putting the time and effort in. Growing it out for a lob next. I enjoy going short to medium and back again. Can’t grow it too long, and I get more headaches with updos. I make it big and fluffy sometimes, smooth others. I was really bad with hair styling until I watched some videos. Found what worked for me. Example, I create curls and waves with a straight iron. I do miss making more complex hair styles, but it is just too thin to do them anymore and gets stringy quickly. .
deleteundelete@reddit
Shaved one side when I turned 50 and been maintaining the one side shaved one side long asymmetrical look that my younger self wasn't confident enough to try ever since. Whenever someone says they love my hair I say "I know! Me too!" instead of thank you.

klef3069@reddit
As a member of the I Don't Care Club and a kid who desperately wanted Laura Ingalls braids, I now have mid-back length brown with silver highlights.
My hair is baby-fine and thin. It doesn't just tangled, it knots. I got a pixie cut at 4, and it was never long again until I stopped cutting it during covid and decided to try to grow it as long as I could.
I got it down to my rear end, but it's just too thin to look ok that long. It needs less length to give it the illusion of some volume. It doesn't look great by any stretch of the imagination, but I like being able to put it up, and I like the feel of it. Plus, my mom HATES it, and while that's a dumb reason not to cut it, that sparks joy.
Atwood412@reddit
I get mine cut regularly into a short bob. I do t dye it. I do have grey hair. To keep the hair healthy and not wild, I use K18 molecular repair.
Practical-Shelter-88@reddit
My hair is really long (past my waist) and thick, wavy/curly. I quit coloring in November 2023, but the color is similar to my real hair. I have silver growing in, it’s by the temples and also sporadically throughout. I can’t pony tail due to head aches, but hair sticks (like chop sticks) are my bestie when it’s hot.
DarcFenix@reddit
It’s bright fire engine red and I keep it long. Either down or in a pony tail. Zero plans to change that. So far (50) only a few pieces of tinsel in there. While my hubby’s long hair is about 80% silver.
sherriechs87@reddit
I have long brown hair with a lot of grey coming in, I color it purple every 3-4 months. The grey really picks up the purple, the brown shows the purple nicely in the sun. I wear bangs most of the time, occasionally a pony or braid but that has been limited the last 6 months by a frozen shoulder- it’s difficult to put up a pony or braid when I can’t raise one arm above my shoulder
RAbites@reddit
I do that on my curly hair with pink. I love it.
Le_Mew_Le_Purr@reddit
I was teased and mocked and bullied, and none of the boys would date me—I wasn’t even asked to prom—and even today I have to put up with “oooh, spicy redhead, eh?” from creeps…but I’m still rockin’ my deep, natural red, thick full of body, just below the shoulders. It has never grown longer than my bra strap. The grey is like light blonde highlights framing my face. I basically couldn’t afford my hair. Life is so weird.
positivepinetree@reddit
I stopped dying it when I turned 40. Long, curly hair with minimal gray. Keep things very basic - either pulled back from my face or in a pony tail.

michiaiki@reddit
super short pixie cut that I've rocked since my 30's
SmokyBlackRoan@reddit
I have a trim and tinted gloss put in about every 6-7 weeks. I have shoulder length layers that usually behave when I blow dry with the big round ceramic brush. If it’s really humid or windy I might do a clip. I feel like I look professional and up-to-date; I refuse to do Botox or fillers, so more natural than many of my peers but still good.
missangel21@reddit
I skipped grey and went right to white. It grows in heavily like a halo all around my face, so I dye it. I tried growing it out once, but I chickened out and went back to dying it.
I’m in my late 40s and my youngest is only 13, so I’m going to wait for him to graduate before I try again. I don’t want to be mistaken for his grandma (which I technically could be). Haha
frolickingdepression@reddit
Same! I’ve been coloring my hair since my youngest (now 15) was two. I was 35 and getting pretty gray. I knew once I started coloring, there was no going back, so I put it off as long as I could.
13 years later, I still have the same routine I did. I use henna, so the gray shows up brighter, like oddly placed highlights.
ProfessionalEarly965@reddit
I Wash it and shoulder length bob now. I wear it up in a clip when I work.
Omshadiddle@reddit
I have lots of hair that I stopped colouring several years ago.
I have a steel grey thing going on.
I used to have it in a pixie but got sick of going to the hair dresser all the time.
I let it get longer, and the natural curl at the back made its presence felt. Sadly the top of my hair is much less wavy than the back, so longer styles required blowdrying to look half decent.
I went and got a perm!
Now I have crazy curly hair that doesn’t require any attention for days on end. I throw on a silk bonnet at night and it keeps the frizz at bay. Finger comb with a bit of water or product in the morning and go!
I’ve just had the perm redone after 4 months and I am owning the granny perm!

I'm going for the artsy frizzy mushroom bob look. Not the cool artist with an edgy cut more like the comfy, ceramics teacher from middle school in a denim oversized shirt and clogs. I haven't colored it in over a year so most of my blond highlights are grown out and the grays are super curly.
Rubberbangirl66@reddit

Bottom of the neck bob with curtain bangs. My natural color is dark blonde (now with added whites along the part), so I get it highlighted a lighter beige -blonde with a root smudge.
I look amusingly normal these days - you'd never know what I was like when I was young.
Excellent_Budget9069@reddit
I've always had long hair and I always will. When I was in my teens I wouldn't go anywhere without doing the hot rollers first. Remember hot rollers? Then for the rest of my adult life until about 5 years ago I would blow it out straight which was an exercise in futility because I live in humid Florida. I straight ironed it for a while. Now I wash, condition, comb and let it go. I do get it colored every once in a while but not to cover greys. I have just started seeing grey hair at age 58. It just feels healthier and shinier when I've had it colored.

frolickingdepression@reddit
I keep it about shoulder blade length and henna the roots about every six weeks. I use a curling iron to smooth my hair—my hair doesn’t hold a curl, so I kind of curl it, but the curls fall out before I’m done with my routine. I am left with smooth shiny hair with lots of body for a couple of days though.
I just got “Birkin bangs” too. I was ready for a change, but short hair doesn’t suit me. I am very happy with them. I trim them once a week or so.
jessper17@reddit
I leave it long, get my grays covered every 5 or 6 weeks, and get a trim a couple times a year. Most days I just wash and let it air dry or roll it into a bun and clip it up.

I have it somewhat longer. Just past my shoulders. I usually clip a barrette at the top and pull the rest back in a scünci.
Last year I cut it to just above my shoulders because I knew I wasn’t gonna be doing anything with it, not even brushing it, after having surgery. My husband helped me with the dry shampoo & hair brushing after the surgery. I’m glad it grew back even if brushing it is still a little difficult.
Zipper-is-awesome@reddit
Mine is naturally curly, I usually wash then air dry. For years I dyed it blonde, but it’s just so expensive and my patience was wearing thin, sitting in the chair for 45 min to process every 5 weeks. It’s my natural color now, and I didn’t end up with salt & pepper, I have my natural brown with one big gray streak right down the middle of my scalp. I kinda like it.

I’ve had a version of the same basic hair cut (bob) since 1990 and now I’m grey. Growing it out sucked, I wound up working overseas for a few months so I cropped my hair short and grew it out enough that when I cut it short again upon return it was all grey. I looked crazy for about 2-3 months lol.
MachiaMeow@reddit
Stopped dyeing my hair 6 years ago. Salt & pepper is my thing now. I get a lot of compliments! But I usually wear it in a ponytail because it's stupidly hot where I live.
FractiousAngel@reddit
I still have few enough (knock wood) grey hairs that I pluck them out. When that gets too tedious I might go blonde again (natural blonde into my 20s; lightish chestnut brown now) — I’d love to do violet or something else fun, but feel like it might be too “fellow kids.” Other than that, still have the same mid-back length w/ very slight layering do I’ve had for probably 20 years, usually worn in a ponytail, twist, or messy bun, very wash & wear. I’d so love to go short for the convenience, but it just wouldn’t suit my face — and I’ve seen too many acquaintances of similar age go short & end up looking way older or “matronly.”
reen377@reddit
I was always reddish blonde and now it’s dingier blonde that doesn’t take color. I never dyed my hair much in the past other than to highlight but probably 5 times in my life. 48 years old and no gray but stuck with this darker blah. Anyone else experience this? Please don’t get me wrong, I am grateful for no gray and am not complaining (much). I just don’t understand why it won’t hold dye!
MaleficentMousse7473@reddit
I’m getting mine colored close to my original natural color - dark blonde. I get a demi- permanent color and the greys color differently than the not-greys - cheap highlights! Im also letting my hair get quite long while i contemplate buzzing it all off and buying a wig….
recastablefractable@reddit
Ponytail, bun, hairband- same things I've pretty much always done. I don't like it in my face but I don't like not being able to pull it all up. So I have headbands to keep it back when down, and ponytail elastics for ponytail or bun. I've had noticeable grey hairs since my 20's though they seem to spread slowly and IDGAF about them anymore. I do what's comfortable for me. I have too many other things I want to do to fuss with or pay for trying to dye it.

Mine is fading from red to blond-ish and white. The texture change is HUGE for me. I had stict straight hair my whole life, and now it's kinky and wavy.
During COVID, I started cutting my hair myself in a simple, messy bob angled a little longer in the front. Because my hair is now kinky, a messy cut looks good, and I get lots of compliments. I'll never go back to the hairdresser again!
I do have to condition more, and I put in some argon oil smoothing cream to tame the frizzies. I don't blow dry. Just wash, put in some cream, and go.

I’m 55 and my hair is my best feature—it’s the longest it has ever been, mid back, thanks to a hair dresser who listens to the client and no box dye! My hair is very dry so the box dye was so hard on it. It’s also very thick. I only wash it once a week and if I spend about an hour on it—blow dry, straighten, then I can either wear it straight or curled! I love how it looks for the week after the salon! Long, dark brown hair that turns red in the summer, and tons of gray. I box dye ever couple months.
