If Digg has a search function that actually works

A lot of users will stay there and never return to Reddit.
It's the simple things that make a big difference. Hope the Digg team is focused on those things too. Not just the major things that cause drama on Reddit.
A version of Reddit with tags you can search for, like on Tumblr, would be a lot less annoying to navigate.

Are you in Diggs groundbreaker/Circle chat? If so, can you ask them? Id like to know too

I am, so far there’s no announcement on a launch date. Some users have speculated early fall but I don’t think there’s anything substantial to back that up.

I don't blame Reddit or any other similar sites for having bad search. I don't think people realize how hard implementing contextually relevant search by strings really is. There's a reason why Google became the de facto standard, they had an exceptional search engine no one else could match. For the money needed to pay for an equally good search function in reddit/digg/whatever, you could build a couple dozen other features.

Why doesn’t Reddit just use google’s search product?

They would probably have to strike some sort of deal with Google for that, which would mean that Sundar would have control over spez. And unlike their AI deal, Reddit won't profit much from this.

No special deal needed; Google sells their search tech to enterprises as a cloud offering. Maybe on prem, too (remember the pizza boxes?) though I don't know if they still offer that.

Never been a Tumblr person but if someone told me to go find something on Tumblr (analysis of a new popular film or whatever), it was incredibly easy because of the hashtags. X is also very easy to search and find people discussing the topics I'd like to discuss. Even ancient forums that had tens of thousands of visitors daily had more advanced search options than Reddit (many had advanced search options similar to the very specific search function you'll find on sites like Archive Of Our Own).
