Im taking the engine and transmission out of the current body on my Mustang and putting it into a roller that is in overall much better shape, do I need the title for the old Mustang?

So for context I bought a foxbody mustang awhile ago as a project car and the engine and transmission need some work but the body is too far gone and would be too much of a hassle to try and fix up, I see rollers on the market all the time that just need a little bit of body work and the engine/transmission. Some time ago my dad lost the title to the current mustang somewhere in the garage and I’m thinking since I’m going to be switching out the body and chassis and all that, will I still need the old title?

Only if you're VIN swapping also, say if the roller is a salvage title. 😉

If the list title is in your father’s name, you can easily file for a lost title and receive a duplicate in the mail. Costs about $20 in Louisiana.

The title goes with the chassis/body not the power pack. You won't need the title for the engine/transmission donor vehicle.

Depends on the state. in mine the engine must match the body or it can be considered "stolen" and it gets impounded while being investigated.

OP - Contact your DMV, make sure you have all bill of sales for everything and go the right path. This will help you and possibly the future owner if you ever sell it.

This is missing info. Engines amd tramsmissioms arent unique to each vin. We swap this stuff all over the usa and its all legal. You are misunderstanding what you have read.

U need title for the one you plan on driving. Title matches vin in the car. In my area we need a title to scrap the old shell. Some places dont care though.

Nope no need for the old title. Unless you wanted to vin swap with the rusty chassis and register it to you. (Vin swapping is frowned upon legally speaking)

If you are selling the old one, you may. Junk yards and scrap yards may require it. If you are selling as parts only, I'd inform the state that this car has been destroyed. Every state does that differently.

The way to get around that (when scrapping) is to cut the shell in half. It is then considered “parts” and can be scrapped w/o a title.

Do you have a title for your current roller that you are putting everything into?

If you don’t have a title for the roller you really should contact the state patrol of your state to find out the dealio.
