Saw a great show at the Tres Equis Pavilion back in the 90s!
ice-eight@reddit
I believe the official name is “uhh, whatever it’s called now, the outdoor venue at fair park… is it still Gexa?”
RandomRageNet@reddit
The Gexa Equis Starplex Pavilion
KrasnayaArka@reddit
I just call it the Gexaplex
FormerlyUserLFC@reddit
If you want to be old school, call it Starplex. It gets renamed every few years and it's hard to keep up. But yes - Gexa/Dos Equis/Starplex is the Fair Park outdoor venue.
soonerfreak@reddit
It's been Dos Equis since live nation tooknover a few years ago.

Legitimate directions in Denton
Go 35 east north To 35 west south Exit 377
KrasnayaArka@reddit
35E and 35W exist because Dallas and Ft Worth couldn't agree on who got I-35 and who got a bypass so they just split it into two 35s
It does the same thing up in Minnesota when it gets to Minneapolis and St Paul lmao
soulinsurance420@reddit
377 runs parallel to 35 west, there is no 35w exit to 377. Take 35 West North and exit to 35 East South then exit 377 is real
Deltanonymous-@reddit
Always simply referred to this as the blackhole.
ToddtheRugerKid@reddit
It touches 35W and fissles out at the same spot where 121 meets 35W, then rematerializes at I20 a few miles Southwest of Down Town Fort Worth. You can go from 377 to the Northbound 35W service road, and you can go from 347 to 377, but no direct exits from 35 to 377.

liberal_texan@reddit
Nobody thats been in Dallas all their life would call it the 35.
AffectionateKey7126@reddit
My friend to California and within two years he started calling it the 75.
thethurminator@reddit
Real ones say "central"
Mueryk@reddit
Real, real ones call it “that fucking hellscape”……oh wait, my bad, that’s 635.
Weaselthorpe_House@reddit
Nah. 635 is “the death trap”.
intrinsic_nerd@reddit
635 is several lanes of everyone going at least 10 over or 20 under with no rhyme or reason as to what lane they’re in
Weaselthorpe_House@reddit
And sometimes the same lane, which is why there are so many accidents.
thethurminator@reddit
Figured 35 between DFW and Austin is the death trap with all that construction
Mueryk@reddit
Shockingly it is 30 just East of Dallas. Apparently it has a super high accident rate.
Anonymous_coward30@reddit
Right after the bridge? Yeah that makes sense, I hate driving through that section. There's crazy speed variety between drivers and insane lane changers
LeafyZer0@reddit
Anyone else still call the part of 30 that goes through the 35E interchange "the Canyon"?
NikkiVicious@reddit
I referred to Loop 12 as "Walton Walker" a couple weeks ago. A couple of the old guys (like 60s) nodded their heads, knowing exactly where I meant. I had to explain it for everyone basically younger than 30. It was a mixed bag in the 30-40 group.
Same thing with Stemmons. I said I worked off of Stemmons and Empire Central, and Stemmons and Market Center, and just got blank looks. (The second one is the big infomart building... loved that place. First one is that big glass tower, used to have a nursing school on one floor, on the southbound side of 35 and Empire.)
niv-mizzet_@reddit
As a 27 year old Dallas native, I know I've seen Stemmons but I don't know for sure where it is. Sounds like it's a part of 35?
NikkiVicious@reddit
Yup! I believe it"s 35 north of downtown/30, and Thornton is south of 30. I might be wrong on that specific part (I dont really drive to anything between 20 and 30).
AdolinofAlethkar@reddit
Wait what the fuck do people call Stemmons other than Stemmons? lol
NikkiVicious@reddit
Stemmons is technically only part of 35E. South of downtown, it's Thornton. It's confusing for people who weren't old enough to drive before iPhones, but I also learned from my grandfather... which is why I'll screw up and call 30 "the turnpike" every once in a while. (Unless I'm in Oklahoma, then the Turnpike is always 44.)
Valued_Rug@reddit
They don't, they just uber everywhere they don't know any street names.
AG-Bigpaws@reddit
West coast was on two floors. They've got a cut through where they added in stairs. (Ive done a lot of work down there)
NikkiVicious@reddit
Yes! I couldn't remember the name. My office was on the 2nd floor I think. And then the server floor was on the 4th. Or I have those backwards in my head now...
There used to be a pizza place, it was a little family owned place, that was in thr area right behind it, between that building and Loop 12. I swear I still dream about those bread sticks at times.
kingyogapants@reddit
Yes, my boyfriend and I have to drive through the canyon every other day and we ALWAYS complain about it, especially when driving from east to west . Well, and west to east too… I remember a time I used to be able to go 30 mph through it , there was traffic but less cars on the road .
FormerlyUserLFC@reddit

Alternative-Pen-6742@reddit
This 100%. Came to say the same thing.
topherhead@reddit
They also say the I from "Interstate" in highway names. "I-75."
Now what'll really catch them out is saying "The Tollway" because we have so many and yet only one is "The."
pun-in-the-oven@reddit
I'm from California and we absolutely never say the "I." It's either "the 10" or "the freeway."
FormerlyUserLFC@reddit
I think their comment is slightly off. We often see people call US75 I75 not realizing this highway is 1000 miles from I75.
But it doesn't mean someone is from California in that case...just out of town or has no awareness of highway naming practices.
ericthefred@reddit
Haha. My wife often calls 190 "I-90". I've given up correcting her.
NUS-006@reddit
Seconded
NikkiVicious@reddit
Omg this was the other one. BIL was from California, moved here for a few years. I was giving him directions saying PGBT/GBT, DNT, 161 was still a different section in my head. Just confuse. I finally just started putting in the addresses in Google/Apple maps for him and hoped he could follow them.
metalforhim777@reddit
Yeah one time I saw someone on that show Speeders get asked when the last time she got a ticket was she said "6 days" and then "for 102 on THE FIFTEEN freeway" I guess calling highways "The (number)" is a cali thing, or at least SoCal.
Vast_Acanthaceae_118@reddit
I had a new hire tell me they took "the loop" to get to to work....... he meant Loop 12 LOL

NineOhTree@reddit
In Happy Face Killer, a TV producer is questioning a serial killer about his trip from DFW to East Texas and she asks “Did you take ‘the I 20’ or the ‘I 30’ to get there?” We don’t use “the” and we don’t use “I.” It’s just 20 or 30. That line drives me up a wall.

BenderIsNotGreat@reddit
In texas we dont say The before road numbers. I would just say, traffic on 75 is wild. A californian would normally say, traffic on THE 75 is wild. A pretty small but effective shibboleth
pauliep13@reddit
Really, the only one I can think of where natives might use “the” is “the Tollway”, but as you just said, that’s not a number. Also, some people have been just shortening down The Dallas North Tollway to “DNT”.
SadBit8663@reddit
Yeah you've got the DNT, the SRT, the George Bush, and hell (635) 🤣
ty944@reddit
Most people I’ve known don’t say the DNT, Sam Rayburn is usually referred to in my circles as “the tollway” and pgbt is pgbt or bush
TCBloo@reddit
DNT is "the tollway", PGBT is "the Bush", Sam Rayburn is 121, and 635 is dogshit.
ty944@reddit
Hahaha so true. Yeah think it depends on what part of north Dallas you grow up in for what gets “the tollway” title 😂
eSTARr35@reddit
You’re very wrong about that. All of DFW knows that the Dallas North Tollway is referred to as “The Tollway”
ty944@reddit
Yeah I guess every person I personally know is wrong
eSTARr35@reddit
Sounds like y’all aren’t locals and just moved here within the past few years lol
ty944@reddit
You’re insane, I’m sorry my anecdote about how the people I know call a different tollway “the tollway” offended you? Get a grip
eSTARr35@reddit
LMAO so you’re calling any tollway just any name you want? That’s not how it works in life. Are you actually hearing yourself 😂
soonerfreak@reddit
On the other hand we now have the 635 Superspeed way.
seaspirit331@reddit
That's called the Autobahn
Architect__@reddit
This right here. But to me 75 is either “75” or “Central”, 635 is “635” or “LBJ”, and PGBT is just “Bush”. SRT has always been “121”
texan01@reddit
Rayburn is 121 to us oldtimers.
SnowClone98@reddit
It’s 121 to everybody, I think they’re simply confused lol
SnowClone98@reddit
I’m pretty sure you’re confused and they’re referring “The Tollway” as ‘the tollway’.
FormerlyUserLFC@reddit
DNT can be called "The Tollway". Someone mentioned this exception further up the thread.
oldnever@reddit
Northwest , 12 and harry hines
NikkiVicious@reddit
CTP in Ft Worth lol.
And 635 toll is fast hell. 35E toll is medium hell (except at 5pm). 121/183/820 toll is the 9th circle of hell.
pauliep13@reddit
Yeah, I just say George Bush or 190/161.🤷♂️
DaSilence@reddit
DNT, SRT, PGB, 635, 35W, 35E, 114, 121, 380.... all our road names need to be 3 letters/numbers
Principle_Dramatic@reddit
It used to be the only tollroad in town up until George Bush opened. Anyone shortening it to DNT is either young or not from Dallas.
niv-mizzet_@reddit
I'm 27 and grew up calling it DNT.
Principle_Dramatic@reddit
Did you know they used to accept only cash, change (no pennies) and checks(!) at the toll booths? Credit card payment for tolls and electronic tolls in general weren’t a thing until recently.
Frosty-Alternative46@reddit
do people really not say DNT or PGBT? my parents and i only moved to Dallas two years ago and my dad always says DNT and PGBT.
Principle_Dramatic@reddit
DNT is “the tollway”. PGBT is “George Bush.” (or pigbutt) SRT is 121.
Sowf_Paw@reddit
30 used to be a toll road, or "the turnpike" and old Arlington Stadium was once called "Turnpike Stadium."
The Tollway was also supposed to become a normal highway at some point but not anymore.
Drewness326@reddit
Well, 30 did. None of the others have.
whip_lash_2@reddit
30 did because Fort Worth sued. The Texas Turnpike Authority that ran it did its best to never leave, it just had worse lawyers than the NTTA.
bratbats@reddit
I'm 24 with parents who are 72 and 71, my whole family has lived here since the 1980s, and they've called it DNT my whole life.
MrNakedPanda@reddit
Exactly. It’s the tollway not DNT. It’s George bush not anything else. It’s 635, nothing else. Even the Lyndon b Johnson freeway part is still just 635.
3-DMan@reddit
I was there Gandalf, back when there was only the ONE Toll road...
jjett04@reddit
can confirm, although I’m not that young, I am from Dallas and I call it DNT
SipoteQuixote@reddit (OP)
I just call it "dont"
just_having_giggles@reddit
I've never heard someone from here, say "dnt" colloquially.
I do still hear people call 30 "the turnpike" and this 'new' thing just "Bush" or "the Bush"
Individual-History87@reddit
I was born and raised here, live 2 miles from The Tollway, and am 50ish. Today is the first time I’ve EVER heard/seen it referred to as DNT.
FormerlyUserLFC@reddit
I mean the road is continuously labeled with signs that say "DNT"... I think calling it "The Tollway" or "DNT" is acceptable.
eSTARr35@reddit
Calling it DNT tells me that you just moved here 😂
Individual-History87@reddit
Yeah, I think DNT on there signs is a newer thing. I’ve just never heard anyone say DNT.
Pixabee@reddit
I wasn't raised here and I know right away what DNT and PGBT refer to but I've talked to locals who aren't familiar. It might have something to do with transplants needing to look up locations on google more or something, idk
TheJeff@reddit
That's exactly what I was thinking. I grew up in a house that literally backed on to the Tollway back in the 80s and I've never called it the "DNT".
pauliep13@reddit
Hmm, I guess my bias to that is probably because I hear people in law enforcement use the initials often. Maybe that’s why I think I hear more people using it.
just_having_giggles@reddit
Yep. Must just be all the law enforcement. You're a funny little man I like you
Dick_Lazer@reddit
Yep, and the Bush
pauliep13@reddit
Yeah, most people just say George Bush, don’t put a “the” on that one either.
Dick_Lazer@reddit
Maybe so. I was born and raised in Dallas and have always said the Bush though.
FatAzzEater@reddit
Wait, they actually do that? It's not "the highway 75", it's highway 75, a proper noun.
BenderIsNotGreat@reddit
They dont say the highway 75, just the 75. A famous one thats said alot is The 405

It's basically just an inbred redneck thing to bitch about people from California as much as possible, they're not putting much thought behind it.
Forsaken-Cow3194@reddit
ESPECIALLY 35, bc there’s fucking two of em.
froodiest@reddit
Not in r/dallas there isn’t. 35E goes through Dallas and its suburbs and 35W goes through Fort Worth and its suburbs. They split/converge at Hillsboro and Denton.
Dick_Lazer@reddit
Well not in Dallas at least. r/Dallas encompasses all of North Texas, unfortunately.
Pentekonter@reddit
I was wondering, which one?
Ericshelpdesk@reddit
"The Bush" is the only thing I can think of using "the" as a prefix.
Liberteabelle1@reddit
Born and raised in TX, and raised my kids in NorCal. Back home in TX again 😊. Nobody I ever knew in NorCal or SoCal appended “the” in front of the hwy number, but this is amusing!
But I’ll acknowledge the use of “hella” in my conversation. Goes right alongside “y’all”, lol
fu11m3ta1@reddit
In socal it is the only way that people refer to freeways. Less common in NorCal.
Weak-Ganache-1566@reddit

DrunkenDude123@reddit
Btw “apart” means separate from “a part” means to be included
50bucksback@reddit

Charimia@reddit
To add to the explanation, the reason it’s funny is because this is a screencap from a scene in inglorious basterds, where the Englishman ruins his cover by miming the #3 incorrectly to a German Officer. Germans use the thumb, pointer and middle finger. others use the pointer, middle, and the one next to the pinkie.
So they’re saying “the” 35 is like that scene, but for native Texans.
50bucksback@reddit
The actual good answer
cassssk@reddit
Thank you for this added part! I got the “the” but have never seen IB. It’s on my list though!
Charimia@reddit
It’s a great movie, honestly one of my favorites! But it totally makes sense to not get the joke, having not seen the movie. :)
Synthline109@reddit
This scene in Inglorious Bastards is when the pictured Nazi solider realizes the good guys are actually disguised as Nazi's because of the way he holds up the number "3" on his hand. It was a cultural thing.
And of course in DFW we just call it 35, not "The 35"
JohnnyRaid3r@reddit
I’ve lived here for over 10 years now, was a Dallas cop on patrol for 8 of those years all over the city, so obviously geography was a huge part of my job, and I’ve never once thought this was a thing or was called out on it because I say the 35, the 635, etc. Lol I’m originally from SoCal though (Long Beach and San Diego) so now it makes sense why I say that even though it’s never been brought to my attention.

Personal_Moment2856@reddit
Californian and longtime Dallas resident here. “THE 35” would indicate someone from Southern California, as Northern Californians usually (but not always) leave out articles before freeway numbers. That was a tell for me, but so is focusing on 35E, because it’s 75 and 635 that have been the equal or greater hellholes for those living within the Dallas city limits, or even the county. 35 sucks out loud too, but it doesn’t compare to Central Distressway.
SipoteQuixote@reddit (OP)

Usually these posts about local slang are never true; we can never actually agree on the "correct" ways to call anything here. But it's definitely 100% true that nobody uses "the" with any of the freeway names here.

It honestly took me a few tries to pronounce it how you spelt it lol. Anybody from here knows it’s pronounced Dentin 😂😂
pradafever@reddit
you can also always clock the suburbanites and users from the miscellaneous surrounding cities and towns.
“Dallas is so boring there’s no culture and there is nothing to do, and it’s completely dead at night.” -lives in a gated suburb in McKinney
“I’ve been in Dallas all my life and I don’t go downtown it’s dangerous. I can’t believe people really ride the train in Dallas that’s so dangerous” -lives in west Arlington, hasn’t traveled outside of Tx in a decade
“Don’t Dallas my fort worth! 🤠” -Saginaw resident who has not been to Dallas since 2013 for that one thing
GreedyTexas@reddit
“omg 635 was never this bad before!”
luxveniae@reddit
Has 635 gotten worse? Feel like with the northern migration and added express lanes it has sorta stagnated or even slightly improved… depending on where on it you are.

Dallas so loved its messy I-35 that it decided to create 2 versions (an East and a West) of it.
Slimtex199@reddit
And we hate them equally
A_Homestar_Reference@reddit
Are they worth hating? I feel like every other interstate and freeway is worse than 35.
TheJeff@reddit
Nah, this is Dallas. We hate 35 and forget that there's another one in Ft.Worth.
PhoenixAquarium@reddit
Minneapolis & St. Paul too. And I can confirm I-35 over there isn't great either
Dealmesometendies@reddit
“You have to try these tacos from this one place that’s most definitely two dudes and a dream”.
MildlyIntoxicated_@reddit
Basically any Velvet Taco
Adultery@reddit
How the fuck are these places popular? They wrap a chicken tender in a tortilla … oh, I get it.
DidgeriDuce@reddit
They have great gimmick tacos. I can appreciate that.
It’s just not the place to go for an authentic taco.
A_Homestar_Reference@reddit
Yeah its like people who complain about Taco Bell not being authentic mexican.
yourdailyorwell@reddit
The spicy tikka chicken taco is incredible, not to mention the tots with cheese, bacon, and a fried egg.
Velvet Taco gets ton of hate on this sub but I have yet to meet anyone in real life who doesn't like it.
HailToTheThief225@reddit
Crazy that people still choose to pay $20 for a few mid tacos vs $7 for more than enough of the best tacos you’ll ever have
K1ngPCH@reddit
White people tacos are basically their own style of food at this point.
If I want a Torchy’s/Velvet style taco, I’m going there.
If I want something more authentic, I go somewhere more authentic.
People really love making a mountain out of a molehill on this
soonerfreak@reddit
The problem is I don't think the white people taco places ever justify their price. My $2 bisteak tacos at Salsa Verde just taste so much better.
TheJeff@reddit
I like this take on it. I'm totally down for some of those weird ass Velvet Tacos some days (the Chicken Tikka one and the Chicken Cordon Blue are my favorites) but other days I'm hitting up the counter in the back of the Valero.
yourdailyorwell@reddit
I choose to read this as mole*** hill.

The suburb posters become real obvious on posts about Deep Ellum. "it's so dangerous I can't just got there" literally nothing you've said implied you ever did. Kind of want to find a DISD job just to justify moving back there.

Yeah they make Deep Ellum sound like Helmand Province circa 2004 or something. That being said I’m not about to my kids there on a Saturday night.

The guy holding up the fingers was a British spy, sent in disguise as a Nazzie. He went to a lot of trouble to practice his dialect and memorize a phony part. On his first night there, he starts getting chummy with some Krauts in a Rathskeller, and makes the fatal mistake of ordering “three drinks” by holding up the wrong three fingers. Germans show “three” by holding up the thumb, index finger, and middle finger.” No real German would do this. But an imposter might.
The Nazzie across from him immediately and silently knows that this guy ain’t one of them. They have a massive shootout, and they all die.
I_SmellFuckeryAfoot@reddit
yeah. i remember Diane Krueger's explanation of what happened. i dont get what it has to do with the free way

Because nobody who has "been in Dallas all their life" would call it THE 35.

RandomRageNet@reddit
Do you just get one giant salsa bucket in other states? This one lost me.
OkBet321@reddit
Individual salsa bowls is (from my experience) strictly a DFW thing. Not seen in Austin, San Antonio, and for SURE NOT in the 956. It’s been a while since I’ve been to Houston, and I know it’s not a thing in the Panhandle or west Texas. The table gets a bowl of salsa
