Technologically, maybe, but *Golden Axe* was the pinnacle, gameplay-wise. My all-time favorite co-op cabinet is still *Gauntlet*, though.
#Green Elf Needs Food, BADLY!
I'm *really* looking forward to [Marvel Cosmic Invasion ](https://www.dotemu.com/games/marvel-cosmic-invasion/). Same studio that did TMNT: Shredder's Revenge.
It was Dazzler, not Jubilee. But X-Men ‘97 had that whole half an episode that was basically a trailer for a remake of the classic, but with Jubes and Sunspot. Big mistake not having a mobile/steam game to capitalize on that episode.
They did a re-release for XBox a few years ago, but Konami doesn't have the license anymore, so they weren't allowed to fix any bugs. All they could do was a port.
This is indeed the game better than the two pictured. Playing 4 player is awesome enough. But when you could get six players together. That’s just next level gaming.
I will never forget when I first played that cabinet, I was a very young maybe 5-6 years old and I jumped in a game with 5 other big kids (they were probably only a few years older than me by younger me remembers them being big kids) and I was having a blast, but I felt like I was slowing them down and not helping much. I ran out of coins and started to walk away when one of kids yelled back to me, “come back we gots coins for you, we’re gotta beat this!” I don’t remember if we beat the game or not but I do remember that made me 100% more excited to play now that I felt I was helping big kids.. cheers to y’all
Yup, I'd put it next to those two in the pic, spanning across both cabinets. It would make for an awesone semi-circle of power in the center of the arcade.
Camp Pendleton Arcade.
It was the only time I had 5 friends to play and it was amazing and I want to go back.
Hell, I'll take 3 player Rampage.
Just take me back.. 🥲
I came here to adjust my spectacles and mention that X-Men was the first game to offer such a multiplayer experience, everything had been 4-Player max up to that point I believe. There might have been another title around the same time that offered 5 or 6 as well
Ronald Weasley...

It's welcome to *DAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!*
I still make that sound occasionally in real life when I'm frustrated with something.
E.g., there's road work in my neighborhood while I'm trying to get home, and the detours take me all over town... "BWAAAUUUGGGHHH!"
I loved the avengers one too. Early 90s was peak arcade I think. Cool games like this bf prices went to several dollars per play and the old game units were still there so you could play Simpsons then pac man or donkey Kong.
Both were great. This triggered a memory of Altered Beast for me.
What's scary is, American Graffiti is on TV right now. That movie was set in 62 and this Simpsons game came out in 91- 29 years later. I was just thinking about how ancient 1962 seems to me, but if there were a movie set in 92, it would be 3 years further from today than American Graffiti was to when I was a kid cruising the arcade in 92... My god. Haha
In early 1994, I was hanging out at the local arcade, lamenting that I was bored with Super Street Fighter II Turbo. The dude with the token dispenser on his belt says, "Wait till you see what just came in!". We walk about halfway to the, where I get introduced to the world's first 3d fighting game; Virtua Fighter!
I cannot even begin to imagine how much money I spent playing that coin-op and its first two sequels. Don't get me wrong, both the machines in OP's picture are fire, as are many of the classics being mentioned here. But, for me, the Virtua Fighter series (specifically, VF-III) is the greatest arcade game ever created.
My brother is five years younger, and I feel like these are his games. I don’t feel like a Gen X, and I don’t feel like a Xennial, really, even. I feel in between. Born 1977.
Golden Axe was surprisingly a rare find in my area but always excited when I found one. Double Dragon on the other hand was always right by the front door. The way they punched that chick in the intro….. you couldn’t help but keep pumping quarters in.
I was on a youth soccer team. We went to a camp in Pennsylvania one Summer. During the trip we went to Dorney Park and they had the Simpsons machine in their arcade. Four of us dumped so much money into that machine. We finished the game that day but we didn't have a lot of money leftover to do anything else.
Came here to add Gauntlet and happy it was near the top.
I am thinking about building a Gauntlet themed [MAME machine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAME) in my basement. =)
I remember about 25 years ago at Disneyland the machine ate my money. I was about to walk away but a random guy paid for me to play. Thank you Eddie the yellow wizard.
X-Men was what my friends and I always played at the Golfland arcade. My brother’s a Zillennial and he was obsessed with Star Wars Trilogy Arcade. When we took him to Disneyland in 2000, he was more interested in playing that at the Starcade than going on rides.
All my other faves were mentioned, but I couldn't let this go without mentioning N.A.R.C.!
There's a play-all-day arcade that opened up here that has it, Bubble Bobble and Rampage. Colour me happy.
Why no Smash TV? Basically, The Running Man: the arcade game!
https://preview.redd.it/1zyqxb36ax4f1.jpeg?width=150&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0f5a067e01ff8f111f28b0b6cfc1e5297c11a2a6
In middle school my friend got a MPM machine in his basement, I don't even know how. But anyway, we never had quarters for it, so we'd just open the door and push the button that the quarter dropped over... Except it gave a little electric shock every time. Being dumb middle school boys it took us the better part of a year before one of us had the idea to use the back end of a pencil to press the button instead.
Most classic arcade machines had a lil DIP switches inside that could also let you set it to free play. A bit of knowledge that likely wouldn't be easy to come by pre-google.
Street Fighter 2! THE BEST ! In NYC there used to be tournaments for this and Mortal Kombat. Never have I seen so many controllers replaced on machines cause of the mechanics.
My local arcade kept the original SF2 when SF2 Turbo came out. World Warriors became the unit you’d play on while waiting for your turn in Turbo. Good times.

No machine got more of my money than SF2. I used to live 1 block from a little convenience store and some new people bought it and installed SF2 in the back and me and the boys spent hours in there every day. The owner would of course be happy to have us dumping tens of dollars a day into it so he'd give us free slurpees n stuff. Good times.
It was legendary all right. There were even some famous kids who were known as local legends that folks would hip a train over to their hood to challenge them. I knew of this one Chinese kid in Chinatown NYC I met hanging out in the hood with a HS friend.

Didn't smnotice co-op, you right. But it felt like it. I had a while gang cheering me on as I approach victory over the dude next to me who has eaten ten bucks in quarters from these guys.
I know there was a Gauntlet remake. I always thought there should be another one with leveled saved players like the fast and furious. Minecraft dungeons comes pretty close.
Yes. People that have nostalgia for these games in an arcade setting don't realize that having them at home drastically changes the dynamics.
FWIW, I collect arcade machines. 90s era machines often have the least replay value because continues are free.
The first time I played Area 51 all the way through at a barcade with all games free I was somewhat amazed that the game only lasts for about 20-30 minutes. But I could finally say I beat the game.
I think one of the better cabinet types to own at home might be the racing genre. But I’ve never owned a cabinet so I can’t say.
I guess the real hot take is that a lot or maybe even most arcade games suck if I’m gonna be honest. The golden age of arcade was all designed around coin extraction.
If I were building a physical collection I think I’d rather have physical consoles and a shelf full of games, maybe a pinball machine or two.
Sweet spot for arcade games is like '81 - '82. The incentive for owners was still to get quarters, but the mechanism was a fun game with increasing difficulty. Post crash, you get uninspired games pumped out to try to recapture the spark, then in the '90s you get generic fight and go right titles with different skins and licenses attached.
Fighting games and shmups really reinvigorated things but are niche.
The best part is nowadays if you are slightly techie you can get an arcade cabinet and put a pc in there and basically emulate most of the arcade games and use the original buttons/sticks etc…
They made basically a throwback of it, though it’s a brand new game with different levels, but it has the same look and feel. It came out a few years ago on Steam and I assume Xbox/PlayStation/Switch. It’s called “TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge”.
https://preview.redd.it/eag7jpltoq4f1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d9cfbd6936955dfa6fc0b05ba07acae4b682720b
Ill add this to the arcade Mount Rushmore.
The worst was getting very far and then the "adults" being like okayyyy time for cake and being like no no please god no we are so far....
I think one time ONE time........... We beat a game bc my mom was realllly late to pick us up and the cake table was right near the machine and we were able to beat I think it was turtles might have been simpsons
There's a shitty remake you can find at places like Chuck E Cheese that you play for tickets, which you then spend on pencil toppers and other junk. Honestly calling it a remake is a bit of a stretch, the "gameplay" is incredibly dumbed down and basic, which is saying something when the original was literally just punching buildings.
My little brother and his BFF played that for like two hours at Galloping Ghost, outside Chicago. It just keeps going. At one point, his buddy was like “Wtf, we’re destroying Topeka? That’s like a city of 20,000.” lol
did you just double up an honest answer to OP‘s question with an archer reference? if so, kudos to you… if not, I guess that’s on me for reading too much into formatting.
Oh I forgot about Rampage! Such a fun game!
I remember being young enough that I felt a little thrill and a little guilty playing as a 'bad guy' and eating people.
did you just double up an honest answer to OP‘s question with an archer reference? if so, kudos to you… if not, I guess that’s on me for reading too much into formatting.
Believe it or not no; I’d say 95% of them work and it has just about everything from the 1970’s-2001 or so. Glaring omissions: Die Hard and all the Cruisn’ games
I almost spent some money after my deployment and bought one of the corner versions for my house. Now ex wife wouldn't let me. Wish I had that machine.
> I really wish gun games would come back for consoles.
They'd need bespoke peripherals like the Wii and the "sensor bar" (literally two differently-lit IR LEDs so the wiimote could "see" the location of the screen).
https://www.howtogeek.com/how-modern-tvs-killed-light-gun-games/
Basically, the same idea as the Wii Sensor Bar, but blasted from the screen, which is why the screen would flash white for the NES games and such.
The Menacer for the Genesis worked the other way 'round, but it took like 45 AA batteries to do it.
I have one of these in my dining room. It's a fun game, but as I've mentioned elsewhere, you play through it a couple times and it gets old.
My kid loves it though and I'll likely pick up a few more compatible boards to play in the cab at some point.
Gunblade NYC was my co-op masterpiece. I loved that whole experience with the dope soundtrack, cool enemy setups, fantastic rumbling minigun, boss fights, and level flying setups. My favorite of the co op rail shooters.
Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara is on steam with both arcade games included in the package. Whichever game was the second released (i think it was Shadow over Mystara) is pretty good. Being able to finally play through it because I didn't run out of quarters was fun. Replayable too because the path through the game branches quite a bit.
Also on Xbox Live if I recall. And achievements as well as abilities/cheats you can unlock as you play. It’s a very good setup of the arcade versions and these were the best games for value vs those other quarter theives.
Not sure which one Aladdin's Castle had, either Doom or Shadow over Mystara, but it hooked me.
TMNT, Simpsons, X-Men, D&D and eventually Gauntlet Legends, Time Crisis 2 were my biggest co-op arcade time (money) sinks.
The two D&D Capcom beat em ups are the pinnacle of the entire genre. Capcom beat em ups were always better and more fair compared to Konami ones that were just designed to just steal quarters from kids
If we’re going co-op then for me it’s Gauntlet, Double Dragon, X-Men, & TMNT (Simpsons was fun but basically just a reskin).
If it’s arcade games in general I’d go with Pac-Man/Ms Pac-Man, Galaga, Street Fighter II, & Marvel vs Capcom 2. Maybe Space Harrier and Spy Hunter get a nod.
https://preview.redd.it/fkk6bvte1v4f1.jpeg?width=1967&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0af742cdeaf9d3e61d1f59265618e63e55cd49c7
I have both of these Arcade 1Ups in my daughters' game room
***720°*** is a 1986 [sports video game](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_video_game) developed and published by [Atari Games](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_Games) for [arcades](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcade_video_game).[^(\[2\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/720%C2%B0#cite_note-2) Based on the action sport of [skateboarding](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skateboarding), the player controls a skateboarder as they compete in various skating competitions, such as ramp jumping and downhill races, to earn cash.
Probably lesser known, but I probably played Vigilante more than any other arcade game for the simple fact it was in the foyer of my local walmart for years, and aside from a table Pacman game at a pizza joint, that was the only arcade game for many miles around. I enjoyed the hell out of it though — very Double Dragon-esque.
Double Dragon / Double Dragon 2 was my shit that music went hard. Used to play in the diner on the corner of the strip mall my karate studio was at off I-10 and Kirkwood in Houston.
My family business is with Arcade games like these. Pretty sure we still have these out on location somewhere.
My favorite though was playing Gauntlet Legends with my brother.
Arcade machine collector here: these are good games to play but terrible games to own. Legit everyone I know who's owned any side scroller (including myself) plays them for a few weeks then they collect dust until you get rid of them. It's a lot of cost and expense for something that eats a lot of floor real estate.
Any game with a high score (Ms. Pac Man, Gakaga etc...) or has a competitive element (Street Fighter, NBA Jam etc...) are a much better use of money and space.
No hate on these games, just like my own two cents if you're ever in the market.
Totally depends on genre you’re into. These were two of my personal favorites.
Adding X-Men(6-player only), escape from the planet of robot monsters, Elevator Action(the arcade versions NOT emulator or console versions, HUGE diff), Capt America and the Avengers, x-men children do the atom, jackal, Punisher, Marvel v Street Fighter, marvel v Capcom, Aerosmith Revolution X…. I can go on unfortunately
I remember learning what rage was at the controls of a Simpsons Arcade Machine.
The place: My local Golf ‘N Games
The Date: Like late 80s? Early 90’s?
I am coming into the arcade after a sweet three under par round of mini golf. I’m riding a high of sugar, pizza, and caffeine from the “s******” I just made at the soda fountain when lo, I saw it. There was no one at one of the stations on The Simpsons.
It was going to be the perfect ending to a perfect Friday night out for all As.
I plunked in a quarter. I gave my fingers a blow meant to bring luck and tactile superiority, while really only blowing pizza crumbs on the screen. Ah, Moe’s Tavern. I’ve heard of this joint. I made my way through without problem, laying waste to enemies modeled after literally no one who had ever appeared on a show that had literally hundreds of fucking background characters to this point.
We had an epic team. We all knew how to combine characters and forces for special moves that machine had never knew we knew from Gamefan. Then it came like always. The blow up your balloon mini game. I was ready. I was hopped up like a madman.
I started pounding the buttons. I beat them to holy hell. I smashed those plastic buttons relentlessly. The clicks echoed across the room and bounced back, ringing in my ears.
Then it happened. The thing I wasn’t prepared for. That no one could prepare for.
When some SNOT NOSED LITTLE FIVE YEAR OLD CUNT THAT WASNT EVEN PLAYING THE GODDAMN GAME SLAMS HER HANDS DOWN ON YOUR HAND AND STOPS YOU FROM HITTING THE BUTTONS AND YOU COME IN FOURTH!!!!!!!!!!
I felt it then. A rage I had never known before. I glared at the girl with a fiery look that had previously only been given with the heat from Satan himself. She laughed and ran away. It was the most random girl that I only saw for about ten seconds.
It was that day I learned a valuable lesson. Rage will find you. It will strike when you least expect it in ways you can’t plan for and faster than you can fathom. You must let it run away just as quickly. Don’t let a little girl like rage control you.
But I swear to God if I ever find that little shit I’m gonna kick her in the shin.
A lot of good ones so far and I'd have them on my list too. But one I haven't seen while scrolling was Time Crisis. Those foot pedal shooters were so much fun!
We have a vintage quarter arcade in our mall and we just played tmnt tonight. Then we had pizza and watched mission impossible-twas indeed a good night.
I like this one but Super Mario is my favorite.
Specifically Co ops?
All of the Capcom D&D releases, most of their marvel releases Captain commando, and the alien v predator one.
Personally while I wouldn't necessarily say better I like Bad Dudes Vs Dragon Ninja, Two Crude Dudes Double Dragon 3 and even though it's mostly shooting Ninja Warriors more than both of those games by a lot.
This is Konami's beat'em up output. Great Games. I would say Capcom of this time was also on fire with CPS1 and CPS1.5 and CPS2 games. Final Fight, Captain Commando, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Knights of the Round, The Punisher and Alien Vs. Predator.
Virtual-On: the dual throttle joysticks in that huge seated cabinet, felt like you were piloting an actual Gundam.
Silent Scope: did you know in the first stage, if you choose to fight the harrier jet, you can headshot the pilot once and end the fight instantly?
https://preview.redd.it/k1w132vqft4f1.jpeg?width=276&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a5eed091e9ebe43f0c1d3c11f6d9da3d65b10543
Aerosmith Revolution X aiiiiiighht
Not quite an arcade game in the traditional sense, but Bubble Hockey is my go-to.
Others:
Gauntlet
Joust
Jungle Hunt
Burger Time
Ms. Pac-Man
Street Fighter II
My first job out of college had side-by-side Cruisin, USA arcades. Had plenty of fun at lunchtimes and one time on Friday night after a bar with friends I brought them into our office just to play the arcade (we also had ping pong and air hockey) and but we beat Cruisin USA
This reminds me of a similar arcade game at my youth movie theatre, pretty sure it was "California Speed" . It had a level where you could just rip through a mall taking out pedestrians as you went. Super fun as a kid, a little dark now as an adult.
Ive always found the Simpsons to be a quarter sink, I at least feel I have a fighting chance in TMNT and X-Men.
Place I'd go to had a rotation of machines and I'd always save up for the week of Golden Axe 3 and NBA Jam gotta do the Big Head mode.
That was the game my dad and I would always play together. We got so good that one quarter from each of us we could basically play forever as at least one of us would come in first place every game. We would play till we makes out all our gear and had 99 nitros then just rack up the winnings, and had multiple top scores on multiple arcades around town.
Gauntlet Legends, SF Alpha 3, Marvel vs SF, Marvel vs Capcom 1 + 2, SF 3rd Strike, Sunset Riders, Tempest, Frogger, Area 51, After Burner (Full sit and tilt cab), House of the Dead, Time Crisis, Project Justice, Guilty Gear X2, Taiko Drum Master, Various DDR games, Magical Drop 3, KoF 98-2000, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Metal Slug X, Soul Blade, Soul Calibur 2, Tekken 3, Tekken Tag, Crazy Taxi, Crusin USA, NFL Blitz, NBA Jam TE and Hangtime, and Puzzle Bobble 2.... Thats just off the top of my head. TBH i could go on and on. Arcades were my daycare.
Yes! Our local Pizza Hut had a couple of these machines in their to-go area. Much to the chagrin of our parents, picking up our order always turned into a 20+ minute affair.
The GOOD, OLD DAYS!
TMNT was dope, but that goddamn song in the game drove me crazy. Worked at a place that had it and every employee dreaded listening to, “Turtle Power” for 8 fucking hours.
Die-Hard was a 3d beatem up for 2 players. Lots of fun weapons and environments to use while smashing goons. Of course Time Crisis also belongs up there
Quite the opposite of co-op, but Cyber Sled may be my favorite head-to-head game ever made... and I *really* like Samurai Showdown II and the original Killer Instinct.
https://preview.redd.it/2frruw2m5s4f1.jpeg?width=320&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ee5e48ee5c7e5c6b2ec8e532c0197c04f44b3163
Controls were fantastic, each tank was *actually* different, requiring different mindsets and power up usage...
hit up pinball with t2.
there was also a 4 up racer where the steering wheel had no locks so you could just spin the wheel. then a offroad machine came out that was like this. i want ot say sprint cars or something like that but google isnt helping.
and bonus props to v'ball. so much fun. i have no idea how many quarters i pumped into the game... was not a trivial number.
How is MK this far down? I loved TMNT, X-MEN, Soul Caliber, Tekken, Time Crisis, Cruisin USA, and many more. But, MK was always occupied. The sound system on it just seemed better. The gory graphics with the fatalities. Having to memorize the guide with all of the move listings and finishing combos. It was so good, from the original through at least MK Ultimate. GOAT cabinet level IMO.
Ahh, I didn't catch the co-op part. So thanks for pointing that out. I honestly played Golden Axe, X-Men, Simpsons, TMNT. But if your talking X-Men co-op the best person for that was Nightcrawler.
MK actually had its own sound board, which was ahead of its time.
Most of these games were a single pcb that connects to a universal harness, . That’s why you would see cabinets from older games with newer games in them. mortal kombat was the first game that required 2 boards.
Not better but I would throw Final Fight up there too. But seriously, Konami were king of the arcade co-op games. TMNT, The Simpsons, Sunset Riders, X-Men were all bangers.
* Donkey Kong
* Lady Bug
* Kangaroo
* Pop eye
* Zaxxon
are what I played most in the 80’s but the king was the unplayable Dragon’s Lair. Beautiful graphics but too difficult
When I was a kid, there was a little convenience/liquor store that had TMNT in the corner. We would smash nickels with a hammer to make them work on the machine.
The owner found out and obviously wanted us to stop, but it was because he didn't want the nickels to jam up the machine, so when we would come in, he would throw a bunch of quarters from his til into the game and let us play free
Just before covid my hometown had one of those retro events where they bought a load of machines in.
Played Simpsons with 3 randoms from start to finish. So much fun.
I'd give it to house of the dead 1 as being a definite coin waster, especially with Co-Op, or Time Crisis 2... but if we talking beat em ups and stuff... gauntlet was the shiz
Warlords in its cocktail cabinet is a 4 player masterpiece that came out in 1980. If you ever get the chance to play one in person you will have a blast.
There was a little arcade attached to the laundry mat my mom used to frequent back in the 90s. I loved Battlezone. Pressing my face into the view port and blasting tanks, nothing compared at the time.
https://preview.redd.it/h6i8b7yjqr4f1.jpeg?width=450&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5639011b23ea9f7ec55c759183c11bea6501db69
A local soda shop just opened up in our town and they have the Simpsons arcade game. I’ve been taking my nephews & niece there and they’re loving it just as much as me.
How about the jurrassic park shooters? The one with the rocking seat, or the full enclosure.
And my personal favorite is time crisis 2.
I built my own home set up just to play that again
I'm a little too young and a lot too not American to have played most of the games mentioned here, but I really enjoyed Area 51 shooting game as co-op.
Metal Slug is the king imo
There was some other game on the same machine as metal slug where you were a space ship. Birds Eye view. Great game lol
Time Crisis
Mc2
Soul Calibur
Gotta go Cruisn' USA or Daytona USA. So memorable to line up with your brothers/friends. Losing stung so bad.

There a was a 4 way power move if all players were used.
DDR, but that's only because a local store in the same tiny shopping center I worked at in the early 2000s had a machine. I was making my own money, so I could finally play. Mom never wanted to spend quarters at arcades when I was a kid because she saw it as a waste of money. She's not wrong, but dangit mom, I just wanted to experience arcades before they disappeared. 😭
Mmmmaaaaannn.I'm short as an adult, but I was short for a short kid in schools.
I remember wanting to go to roller skating parties in school, specifically because I was too short to play these very arcade games without the skates making me tall enough to see the screen. Haha.
Good memories.
I started taking my kid to arcade conventions at three. We got a folding step stool and let the kid cover it in paw patrol stickers.
Brat can beat my scores on pins now.
The Punisher. Good gameplay. Lots of unique levels. MANY weapons. Fun to play. I played the Simpsons and TMNT more than the Punisher but that’s only because they were the most common.
The Simpsons game was pretty great but I’ve never played the TMNT one so I cannot judge that.
But IMO NBA Jam is the coin-op arcade game GOAT. Rampage would be my #2 choice.
Add in The Avengers and Gauntlet: Legends.
#LEVEL 93 VALKYRIE FALCONESS HAS JOINED THE FIGHT!
And yes, I had the Falconess. The only arcade game that rewarded grinding.
Most Friday nights for a few years I danced with these two ladies, Battle Toads and Street Fighter II at the bowling alley while my parents did league bowling.
I remember one of the Soul Calibers at my arcade had the option to make a four letter code to save your profile so every time you went back you could enter that code and load up your stats and continue the same character.
Blew my mind and still does.
I loved both of these. I also saw X-Men posted too. I would like to mention the shooter games that ate many of my quarters (or game tokens) .
Anyone remember T-2 or Aerosmith Evolution?
Off-Road, Crazy Taxi, Cruis'n USA are my all time favorite driving arcade games. Area 51, Time Crisis, and Big Buck Hunter are probably my favorite arcade shooters.
I am a very particular kind of nerd so Magic Sword and Cadash would be my picks for most fun co-op arcade games, though I definitely had lots of fun with these two (particularly the Simpsons game where I never lost at blowing up the balloon)
Any arcade games ? Street Fighter 2 .
Cooperative games ? I would maybe take Aliens vs Predator, either of the Dungeons and Dragons arcade games, or even Turtles In Time over the original TMNT.
https://preview.redd.it/67ngevhzuq4f1.png?width=3072&format=png&auto=webp&s=98d818d75e5a1bb153fbbdfcc61fb2e53b394d3a
I LOVED this game!! Anytime I saw it at an arcade it was about all I played.
I have great memories of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the arcade game. Growing up my father owned a large sound company. For my ninth birthday we were on tour with Primus and Les Claypool gave me a sock full of quarters so that I could hang out in the arcade of the lobby of the venue and play Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for hours. It was a great birthday gift.
These two and the X-Man arcade game are why I kept my Xbox 360 in working condition all these years. It's fun to revisit these every once sin a while.
The two TMNT arcade games are in the Cowabunga Collection, but it's a shame the other two haven't been re-released.
Pac-Man and technically Super Mario Bros. I was in the right demographic but I didn't get into either of those arcade games too heavily. I was into the shows for a while.
Have there been any arcade games that made the jump from arcade to PC or console in the last 25 years? I wasnt much of an arcade person (my family never had spare cash to sink into something like that) but I knew it was something that happened back in the day.
I don't at all disagree with these, and X-Men.
But, Captain America and the Avengers was just as huge for me and my friends in the early 90s, as the other 4.

NBA Jam and Mortal Kombat dominated my childhood arcades.
NBA Hangtime on the Nintendo 64 is my favorite basketball game of all time. Still have a 64 console just to play that one game.
There are a couple of Dungeons and Dragons arcade cabinets out there. They are really cool and some small role playing elements to them that set them apart from the other beat em ups. I forget the names.
I was at a resort in middle of nowhere last fall that had a tiny arcade where everything was unlimited credits and I finally beat that damn Simpsons game.
The last few bosses have unavoidable attacks are deliberately designed to force you to spend more money.
The TMNT game is very well balanced and I use to beat that on a dollars worth of quarters.
me and my cousin went through i do not even know how many quarters on the tmnt arcade one summer at a family camping trip. The place had an arcade in this old warehouse with a few classics
https://preview.redd.it/d44sy1cpkq4f1.jpeg?width=203&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4e32f89272c694c6211fbb00be9c94c71ae3d24e
This was always better when played with another person.
Man, I spent so many quarters/tokens on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game. I remember being upset that the NES game was nothing like the arcade version.
I live on long island and we have a vintage arcade with two locations they have these games. I spent an hour or so with my son beating the Simpsons arcade.
Tmnt. I was a huge tmnt nerd when I was a kid. So I always went to that arcade cabinet. I did like the X-Men and Simpsons ones too. Tried my hand at Street Fighter 2, but all the big kids beat me. Lol
The only thing that would make this combination better is if you kept The Simpsons and added another The Simpsons. Love TMNT but The Simpsons can STILL suck quarters out of my pockets somehow.
X-Men vs Street Fighter. I used to be able to beat it on one quarter. Plus it stayed around a long time, could often find it tucked away in the back as cabinets got newer.
I wouldn't say it's better, but the Aliens vs Predator arcade game capcom did was really damn good.
Late 80's to mid 90's were the pinnacle of the beat em up genre - so many classics from that era. Fighting games stole the arcade spotlight once SFII came out, but in my opinion co-op beat em ups were the best arcade experience.
The TMNT Arcade game brings back a sense memory of gyros and loukoumades (little puffy donut type morsels with auto and honey) because the Greek Festival in my hometown would always have it in the arcade tent. It was a huge event so all the neighborhood kids would be there and we’d take turns when someone died while the other kid ran back to beg their parents for more quarters.
One year for my birthday party we went to a bowling alley that had the TMNT game. My mom saved quarters for months, filling up a big jar for the party, and we just kept feeding quarters in to keep going and beat the whole game. I don't know if a full round of bowling even took place that day lol.
There are lots of better games. The "fight and go right" genre is mostly samey and has a gameplay loop that encourages you to pump in quarters until you finish.
For a co-op title, I'm going to put my bid on smashtv. It takes the berzerk formula and cranks it to 11 and has a great theme that isn't just tied to an ad for another property.
The Simpsons is so insanely overrated. I get that it was amazing for what it was for the time, but nostalgia has been insanely kind to this.
I went to a local arcade with my kids the other day and it just felt rough. Especially when you compare it to TMNT, X-Men or even something like King of Dragons.
The TMNT game was the shit. X-men, Gauntlet and Double Dragon are other classics i remember. We'd get zip lock bags of quarters and ride our bikes up to the convenient store to play them.
Yea i remember one day being at the xmen arcade and there was probably 6 of us just swapping in as one person ran out of quarters and had to go run and find their parents to get more.
