Ladies going through the change

I don't mind being hot, I honestly hate being cold. But these hot flashes are something else. I feel like I am boiling on the inside. My glasses fog up every time one hits. I work in a refrigerated environment and have to run to a freezer for relief. I am stuffing my bra with ice packs to help. I turn 50 this year and I am ecstatic that it's been a minute since I have had a cycle. Please tell me it gets easier.
Formal_Plum_2285@reddit
I never had a single hotflash but because there are no winners in this menopause game, I got hit with a severe case of belly fat instead. I’m 50 years old - how TF am I supposed to get rid of this now?
Proud__Apostate@reddit
Semaglutide. I've always been petite, but thanks to perimopause, gained like 14 lbs in a year. Exercise doesn't work. Diet only works if you're basically starving yourself. If you don't wanna be hangry all the damn time, the GLP-1s work.
remoteworker9@reddit
I’m also on semaglutide. Nothing else worked for that perimenopausal belly fat.
Formal_Plum_2285@reddit
Girl - I’ve been on Ozempic for 4 years cause I’m diabetic. And this is why I know the Change is here to kill me. 1 mg Ozempic every 5th day and my body is going “hey remember when you said, you’d lost 20 lbs a few years back? Well guess who found them for you?? and this time we’ll make sure, you are together for ever”.
eastbaypluviophile@reddit
Shit. 😖
Proud__Apostate@reddit
Damn. That sucks.
Unplannedroute@reddit
I turned into a barrel with an arse.
MissSassifras1977@reddit
It is the WORST.
I was always pear shaped.
Now I'm an upside down pear. Not fun at all.
Formal_Plum_2285@reddit
Omg you have no idea how much this made me laugh
MissSassifras1977@reddit
I feel so seen.
kellyinwanderland@reddit
Welcome to the club no one wanted to join! For a mere $6-8,000 you can do cool sculpting or for a more invasive procedure you can do liposuction for $4-8000. I elected to either wear sun dresses or stretchy pants like yoga pants lol
Formal_Plum_2285@reddit
LOL. I always wear baggy shorts and t’shirts so at least that’s something.
Small_Exercise958@reddit
I had to buy new clothes because of the belly fat. I hate skinny jeans now or anything that digs into my waist LOL…I wear sweatpants or shorts and big T shirts at home and loose dresses and elastic waist or baggy jeans at work with a loose top/blouse.
kellyinwanderland@reddit
Hell shorts were too restrictng for me. Sundresses are my mumus lol. I am embracing my inner Mrs Roper.
Formal_Plum_2285@reddit
Someone recently asked why I dress like a teenager and I was so offended. I don’t dress like a damn teenager. They dress like me !! I’ve always worn oversize/baggy shorts and platform sneakers like Adidas or Converse. An oversized and comfy t’shirt, sixpence cap and pigtails. IMO I’m basically a style icon. So this belly fat is driving to do something drastic. Like exercise.
eastbaypluviophile@reddit
I never ever thought I’d be looking at plastic surgery to get rid of my spare tire and arm flaps but goddam I am going to do it. Nothing is working.
Small_Exercise958@reddit
I changed my diet, cutting down on food that causes inflammation: white flour, sugar, processed food, seed oils. Eating more fish, egg whites, reduce sodium, enough fiber, healthy fats within a reasonable amount (avocado, olive oil, avocado oil, nuts, butter), and veggies. Also probiotics: kombucha diluted with water (it’s a bit strong for me), sauerkraut, kimchee, can also take probiotics in pill form.
I used to eat lots of pasta, pizza, bakery items, and candy when I was younger but I can’t do that now. I think insulin spikes from too many carbs also causes fat storage. This has reduced my tummy bloat (I would look 6 months pregnant). My belly fat has decreased a little - it may take much longer to lose more of it.
I lift heavy weights and try to walk more. I’ve heard conflicting things that doing too much cardio or HIIT workouts can increase cortisol, the stress hormone which can cause more belly fat storage.
I also do intermittent fasting (12 to 14 hours fast overnight, occasionally longer). A lot of this is trial and error of what works for you. Dr. Mary Claire Haver has some good videos on YouTube about menopause. Good luck!
Hawlee72@reddit
Don’t eat white bread (or really white anything) & crunches, and leg lifts from laying flat on your back. Start slow. 👌🏼
Formal_Plum_2285@reddit
I have an eating disorder (arfid) and just to make life even more complicated for myself, I also have autism and basically only want to eat spaghetti, rice, potatoes and bread LOL. But I’m European and rarely eat white bread. Our bread is very dark, whole grain rye. However it’s summertime and I LOVE the fresh veggies this time of year, so I’m for sure willing to drop the spaghetti and rice and eat raw veggies instead. And I’ll try the leg lifts and chrunchies too. Thanks ♥️
Hawlee72@reddit
Welcome much! You can still eat all that, just the brown or unbleached or whole grain versions. Even sugar. Eat all you want, just switch from white. It really helps!
Formal_Plum_2285@reddit
My cat get’s Orijen catfood from Canada cause it’s the best of the best. But a few weeks ago a neighbour gave her some sort of extremely gross liquid chicken snack. And she’s like “yeah I’m gonna eat only this from now on”. And well that’s basically the same with me and very white spagetti LOL
trUth_b0mbs@reddit
check the r/Menopause sub; lots of great info/women in there going through the same thing and offering awesome solidarity.
Ok_Piglet_1844@reddit
But it’s not a hot flash…. It’s a power surge!
IrreverentPastor@reddit
Ice packs in bra—front and back, and in panties along lower back. My husband is 8 years older than me and was/still is always cold. I was miserable in the house. There were days I would go to my car and blast the ac. I would open the freezer and stand there. Why the hell do we put up with this, especially husbands who have no sympathy? But it does get better. Now I’m cold all the time, except at night. 🤣
Limberpuppy@reddit
Check out r/menopause
blackcain@reddit
I'll probably join so I can help my wife. She's always had brutual periods with a lot of pain. Helping her through this and her changes is going to be important.
Menopause is a family ordeal, not a womans.
AltruisticSubject905@reddit
This is one of the most beautiful things I’ve heard in a long time. Having a supportive partner while going through the unpredictable emotional rollercoaster of second adolescence is golden.
blackcain@reddit
It's so much worse. She also got a brain injury and ehler-danlos. She spent the last few hours crying on the couch either in pain or depressed. No partner can watch their partner suffer like that.
AltruisticSubject905@reddit
I’m so sorry. Bless you for being supportive.
JenX74@reddit
Jfc. Wow. I have never seen anyone phrase it so simply and be so, again, simply empathetic. Much less a man. Amazed right now. Thank you...your family and especially your wife are so fortunate.
blackcain@reddit
Au contraire - I'm the one that's fortunate to have an amazing wife. :) If I've accomplished many things in my life but marrying this one is my greatest achievement. :)
Unplannedroute@reddit
Listen buddy, with that attitude you're going have the women over in that sub try and steal you away 🤣 Seriously tho, you're a good man for being aware. Read the wiki and support her however she needs.she might be one of the majority that sail through easily.
blackcain@reddit
Will do! :)
Koolmidx@reddit
Alternatively ask your doctor, and don't trust redditors.
Other-Opposite-6222@reddit
Normally, I would agree. But I am assuming you aren't a woman with that kind of response. I worked in an OB/GYN residency program and the doctors out loud admit that they have little or no training in menopause and will be providing very little. Plus, that subreddit has a lot of advice about supplements, online providers, and triggers. It is like a hivemind. However, it can be HRT or bust and sex negative sometimes.
Koolmidx@reddit
Yeah I was trying to generalize regarding trusting redditors, and I thought that was obvious. Admittedly I am a guy with only here say from family members who as far as I know haven't suffered as bad of symptoms or doctor experiences as others. I'm not trying to give any harmful advice.
Pinepark@reddit
They have suffered. Generally in silence. That’s the problem. More women NEED to talk about menopause and perimenopause so others understand what’s going on in our bodies.
Mondschatten78@reddit
Sure, but then what do you do when the doc tells you the equivalent of, "It's all in your head"? Women are ignored by doctors enough as it is when they bring up symptoms, but doubt you'd know that....
ChemicallyAlteredVet@reddit
Or my personal favorite “It’s natural”. How does that make it any better?
SueAnnNivens@reddit
Women have always educated each other about menopause. Menopause aside from mood swings, hot flashes, and hormone replacement therapy isn't a huge topic in medical school and residency programs. This is a wonderful resource in addition to a doctor.
Pinepark@reddit
Look up how much time is spent on menopause education while a Dr is in training to be an OBGYN.
Limberpuppy@reddit
It can be difficult to find a doctor who will actually treat menopause. r/menopause is a great resource for that.
IHaventTheFoggiest47@reddit
That's not fair - doctors usually suck at this condition, and hearing others' stories can be helpful in learning and sharing experiences. We also share what's best to ask doctors, or how to approach certain topics.
OnPaperImLazy@reddit
I'm a huge proponent of HRT, but r/menopause low key pissed me off. There's some good info there but it can be a lot to sort through.
ILoveUncommonSense@reddit
Seconded! Use it to find a good local doctor and it’ll change your life.
selekta_stjarna@reddit
I could not stand it. I went to my doctor and demanded HRT. I wear an estradiol patch and the hot flashes are gone.
catmoondreaming@reddit
God, I wish. I went through medically induced menopause at the age of 32 due to cancer. They won't let me have HRT because my cancer is hormone based. Literally just me rawdogging the world.
BougyHippie@reddit
I went through medically induced menopause TWICE! Thanks, cancer.
deltarefund@reddit
How is that possible?
BougyHippie@reddit
The first time was after one of my laparoscopic surgeries and it was done with Lupron and some other hormones that I can’t remember. Lupron is a super gnarly drug, it was awful.
The second time was after my cancer surgery when they removed a tumor and all my female parts. The best part is that my doctor did not explain that we removing everything would send me immediately into menopause. It was about a year and a half later when I was complaining about being irritable when my friend explained the situation to me.
deltarefund@reddit
Oh, I see!
I had a full hysterectomy too (ovarian cancer!) and I’ve never felt better!! My moods are better than they e been in 25 years.
fuzz_nose@reddit
Mine won’t let me do HRT either but I was ER/PR negative. 🙁
I’m also on team Rawdog Menopause! (It sucks here too!)
NorthRoseGold@reddit
(I work in research) Many doctors are completely clueless of the most recent research on many topics.
The acceleration of research methods and resources in the last 5-10 years is mindblowing, so career physicians are simply not accustomed to changing practice in a way that's consistent with today.
THINK ON THIS:
In the past, significant discoveries that would change doctors' practice on the ground would occur at a time intervals that allowed professional groups (like ACOG) to receive it, debate the particulars, then meet and change practice recommendations.
Those changes would then roll out to doctors in practice and they would implement it.
Today, research discoveries are accelerated due to better understanding/equipment/AI/crowd-sourced data/computing etc.
The old system of waiting around for APA/ACOG/health insurance boards etc JUST ISN'T WORKING.
Patients can find the research circulating in general knowledge on the internet before professional groups can meet and debate and change.
Patients are demanding better care or at least a look at the new information but doctors in practice are shrugging because their pro group/instance overlords etc haven't told them to change their if-this-then-that paradigm/schema yet so they assume they're still up to date.
That's why online clinics and "functional doctors" and medical groups who do an end-run around insurance etc are flourishing.
Many are following the profit, true, but in seeking profit, they're a bit more willing to roll with the research/go outside the schema/not wait around for ACOG to have their biennial meeting etc.
Damn, did I just make a capitalist argument re: healthcare? That the potential for profit drives innovation? Poop. But true.
PaddlingDingo@reddit
This is how I got my own CGM, estrogen patches, and tirzepatide. I just went outside the system. 🤷♀️
fuzz_nose@reddit
So I found this publication from 2021:
ps://www.mdpi.com/2072-6694/13/11/2506#metrics
Abstract:
"Triple-negative breast cancers (TNBC) occur more frequently in younger women and do not express estrogen receptor (ER) nor progesterone receptor (PR), and are therefore often considered hormone-insensitive. Treatment of premenopausal TNBC patients almost always includes chemotherapy, which may lead to premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and can severely impact quality of life. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is contraindicated for patients with a history of hormone-sensitive breast cancer, but the data on safety for TNBC patients is inconclusive, with a few randomized trials showing increased risk-ratios with wide confidence intervals for recurrence after HRT. Here, we review the literature on alternative pathways from the classical ER/PR. We find that for both estrogens and progestogens, potential alternatives exist for exerting their effects on TNBC, ranging from receptor conversion, to alternative receptors capable of binding estrogens, as well as paracrine pathways, such as RANK/RANKL, which can cause progestogens to indirectly stimulate growth and metastasis of TNBC. Finally, HRT may also influence other hormones, such as androgens, and their effects on TNBCs expressing androgen receptors (AR). Concluding, the assumption that TNBC is completely hormone-insensitive is incorrect. However, the direction of the effects of the alternative pathways is not always clear, and will need to be investigated further."
Guess I'll have to suck it up....
mcsangel2@reddit
Yep. I have a couple of uncommon chronic pain conditions. Those of us in this group know WAY more about it than most doctors, and some of us know more than even some specialists.
Distinct-Olive-7145@reddit
+1 for functional medicine doctors. By far the most knowledgeable and agile thinkers, on average.
Unless allopathic medicine gets its shit together, it's going to go extinct.
Eventually. I'll be gone by then, but hey. Thems the breaks.
Illustrious-Panic672@reddit
(consider that as a person with an ailment, you're going to spend time your free time deep diving into it. consider also that your physician doesn't have that kind of time, and would need to deep dive 5,000 ailments to keep up)
This is key.
I read a post on reddit a few weeks ago where someone was looking for asspats because they went off on their doctor. Doc didn't know that honey was now considered bad for infants. Doc had suggested wetting a washcloth with a tiny bit of honey melted in warm water to soothe the gums of colicky Baby.
When the poster told the doc that honey was considered bad for infants, the doctor was just like "Oh, that's good to learn - thank you!"
OP was so mad they switched doctors and wanted reddit to weigh in about whether or not they could press charges or report that doc to "the board". The poster was incandescent with rage. "I shouldn't have to teach my doctor about medicine!!!!"
Medicine changes every day. It's called science, and it rules so hard - we are still learning so many things. You will always be your best advocate. You owe it to yourself to learn all you can about your situation. And there's no shame in doing what the commercials say: ask your doctor if X is right for you.
canweleavenow0@reddit
This wins the internet today
interestedinhow@reddit
This was super helpful. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
RunRunRabbitRunovich@reddit
I’m on this same team and between burning like I’m on the sun to freezing cold and the mood swings of rage and crying I can’t function. My Dr has been zero help my GYN is zero help and it just feels hopeless. Not to mention the zits have returned 🙁
interestedinhow@reddit
I've been right there. I mean Right There. Please keep looking for the right doctor. Sadly, medical education regarding women's health woefully lags behind, but it's stumbling forward, slowly. Let's just say menopause hasn't been studied anywhere near as much as erectile dysfunction.
I had to dig around online doing research on practioners who focus on women's reproductive health, including menopause (that seems to be the label that works) and found one. This person has saved my life. Don't give up! I went through two gyns and one GP. It's daunting I know, esecially with the mood swings, but it so worth it.
DM me if you want to know more about HRT I'm using.
gigilovesgsds@reddit
Have you done pellets? I’ve got an appointment next month.
interestedinhow@reddit
I haven't, but know a couple of people who did. I think it really depends on who you ask... and I think it can be pretty individualized
Disastrous_Drag6313@reddit
My sister also had breast cancer and same same. She uses an Embr Wave device on her wrist. Looks like a smartwatch, cools her down if she's having a hot flash. Highly recommend.
fernshot@reddit
Find other doctors. This is unacceptable.
Chrissy086@reddit
Oh god, yes! And my 13 year old thinks puberty is the hardest time! I told her to try Menopause, when she was smarting off to me 🥵🤬😮💨
WinterMedical@reddit
I take a sleepy gummy at night and not only has it fixed the insomnia, it has mostly fixed the hot flashes even though I don’t take any in the daytime.

Which one may I ask?

What is er/pr negative?
advocatecarey@reddit
ER - Estrogen Receptors
PR - Progesterone Receptors
Hormone receptor-negative tumors are estrogen receptor-negative (ER-negative) and progesterone receptor-negative (PR-negative). These tumors do not express hormone receptors. This means they have few or no hormone receptors.

Time to find some else.
Historical-Gap-7084@reddit
Another for the team Rawdog Menopause here. I pluck chin hairs every night.
Regular_Emphasis6866@reddit
It seems to have a lot of naysayers, but low dose effexor worked for the hot flashes and weird ass anxiety.
catmoondreaming@reddit
I am terribly afraid of that one. I watched a friend of mine get off it and that was some scary shit.
castironbirb@reddit
Hormone positive breast cancer here. I was only on it for a couple of months before my diagnosis. It was nice while it lasted. Now I'm basically on anti-HRT. 😬
For anyone who can't do HRT, c'mon over to r/hormonefreemenopause.
souvenirsuitcase@reddit
I hope you are doing okay (considering).
I appreciate the recommendation. The perimenopause subreddit is almost like a cult of HRT. I was chastised for taking Valium over hormones.
taylorevansvintage@reddit
Your Drs may advise against transdermal HRT but topical creams are considered safe for everyone and prevent UTIs (which women die from as they age) and genital atrophy (eg your clit and labia disappearing due to no estrogen). New guidelines were just released this year:
https://www.auanet.org/about-us/media-center/press-center/american-urological-association-releases-new-guideline-on-genitourinary-syndrome-of-menopause
Think of it as skincare for down there, ie a daily routine
Iron_Butterflyy@reddit
Wth. No one mentioned this before.
taylorevansvintage@reddit
No one does - women find out after it happens and they can’t orgasm anymore or have persistent UTIs. The guidelines are aiming to get hormones to be first line care.
Temporary-Break6842@reddit
I could not imagine my clit and labia just disappearing! Yikes. Glad my HRT patch helps with that
souvenirsuitcase@reddit
And men's lot in life is that their testicles will one day hit the toilet water. I think they got off easy.
Temporary-Break6842@reddit
That they did!
Temporary-Break6842@reddit
Didn’t experience that at all. Just as many anti HRT women as pro. 🤷🏼♀️
castironbirb@reddit
I'm doing pretty well thanks 💙 I'm sorry you had that experience but you are not the first that's for sure. I hear a lot about how other subs seem like a cult or they get downvoted into oblivion saying they are looking for alternatives because they can't have HRT.
Perimenopause is rough for sure! I hope you are feeling good and managing. Finding things to help is a bit of trial and error but there's lots of ideas to try.😊
BikingAimz@reddit
Yes! We have off label drugs like venlafaxine and gabapentin, and alternative treatments like acupuncture. My acupuncturist was on vacation the last two weeks, and I got first hand reminders that it definitely works for me!
northshorehermit@reddit
Same. But 47. Horrible, horrible horrible
ReactionAgreeable740@reddit
Also on team rawdog!!! On hormone blockers because of hormone receptive breast cancer.
Sharp-Alternative375@reddit
My wife is going through the same thing, for the same reason, however, she is 55. The AC in our house is often set at 68 degrees, and she has a fan pointed at her most of the time. I wear a coat in the house 24/7/365. This is has been going on for over two years now. Hopefully, there is an end in site.
Red-is-suspicious@reddit
Check out r/menopause - a lot of women are taking something despite their hormonal cancer diagnosis. Topical vaginal estrogen isn’t enough to make it systemic for example and can save your vulva and vaginal tissue and function.
canweleavenow0@reddit
Check a different doctor that specializes in HRT. The protocols have changed and many doctors aren't up to date You can at minimum use vaginal estradiol to maintain your bladder and lady parts health. It also helps prevent utis
buyer4bio@reddit
Here to join the rawdogging crew 😆 I have a lung diesese related to estrogen no extra hormones for me!
kque69@reddit
Ask for Veozah. It’s been a godsend! Hot flashes gone and sleeping most of the night. Get the coupon so it’s affordable though!
Single-Zombie-2019@reddit
Same. I was ER/PR negative, HER2+ and no one will give me HRT due to the cancer risks associated with it. I'd kill for some to get rid of the hot flashes for the last 10 years, though!
Chickwithknives@reddit
But you were ER and PR negative. Estrogen isn’t going to rev up anything left behind….
Single-Zombie-2019@reddit
Doctors were telling me in general there was a cancer risk associated with HRT. And that it wouldn't be worth taking the chance.
HoneyWyne@reddit
Exactly the same here, but 8 years ago at 46. I'm always hot.
Chickwithknives@reddit
Chemopause at 43. Live in a place with cold winters. I have PILES of sweaters. I think I’ve worn a sweater twice in the last 7 years. No more hot flashes. Totally miss sleeping under multiple layers with a thick heavy down comforter on top😣. Can’t stand to have the cats laying on me at night.
HoneyWyne@reddit
MN here! I wear tank tops year round and my house hovers between about 64 and 69 all year round. Except the bedroom, which is the freaking fiery furnace of freaking doom.
Even_Evidence2087@reddit
I use gabapentin for hot flashes (triple positive breast cancer) and it works really well!
Snoo-59563@reddit
Same about medically induced, but mine was NOT hormone based. GP (male) told me cardiovascular exercise was the only thing scientifically proven to work. I’ve never swallowed so much homicidal rage in my life.
interestedinhow@reddit
Ugh. God, that sucks. I'm sorry.
deltarefund@reddit
I went through medical last year at 45. I feel like I don’t have hot flashes…. ?
Ndrew64@reddit
Same. I exercise a lot, and I believe that it’s helped me. My hot flashes only happen at night and pretty much only if I eat spicy food.
emilythequeen1@reddit
Or wine for me!
No_Breadfruit_7305@reddit
I didn't exercise a lot but all of my hot flashes came at night. And I think I would change every 15 minutes between I'm sweating like a camel in the desert and then I would go to screw this I'm freezing turn the fan off and get back under the covers.
One thing that did help for the night sweats is I did get a cooling mattress pad. It wasn't a complete panacea but it did help some. Unfortunately I went through the change young due to illness at the age of 37.
tinantrng@reddit
Limiting sugar in my diet also helped over time but the exercise and patch are the magic elixir!
JenX74@reddit
Find another dr. No hot flashes ever since hrt. I thought i was dying
Familiar_Rip_8871@reddit
Same with me. No HRT due to too many cancers. Been dealing with hot flashes for 11 years now. In Phoenix. I used to love the heat.
catmoondreaming@reddit
I live in the Midwest so at least I’ve got 7 months out the year in freezing temps. I’ll step outside without my jacket and stream just ROLLS off of me. It’s so gross. 😂
SKULLDIVERGURL@reddit
Ask your dr about a low dose of Paxil/paroxetine. It is essentially the same thing as brisdelle and most insurance will cover it. I can do HRT either and I thought I was either going to drown from night sweats or spontaneously combust from the hot flashes. The paroxetine and fixed the issue. I can now sleep and not walk around is wet shirts.
catmoondreaming@reddit
Oh, thank you! I’ll definitely talk to her about it. I don’t get hot flashes so much anymore but the night sweats never left me. I bought bamboo sheets and they’ve helped a LOT, but I’ll ask about it!
28Widget@reddit
Try gabapentin. It’s been a lifesaver for me.
aksf16@reddit
I can't have HRT for the same reason. I recently started taking black cohosh and haven't had a hot flash since.
MadameMonk@reddit
For those Rawdogging it? Keep asking. Go to a specialist menopause clinic or doctor. Mine says there are only a teeny tiny group of women who can’t be catered for with some MHT regime of some kind. Even some women actually in the middle of doing chemo!
Lower-Protection3607@reddit
I had to do a name check because I could have written every word of this except my surg was on my 36th birthday.
OctopusParrot@reddit
There's a new treatment available called Veozah for hot flashes that is non-hormonal. I don't know if it would be appropriate for you but it's at least worth a conversation with your doctor to see.
citycouple30@reddit
Same for me. The last part of my treatment is Anastrozole I have to take for 10 years. I had already been through menopause naturally, and this pill made me go through it again. Talk about a nightmare.
Suspicious_Jicama906@reddit
Me too. Meeeee too.
advocatecarey@reddit
Same. Breast cancer at 35, BRCA1+ and triple negative. Hysterectomy at 36. I keep waiting for the hot flashes to end, but here I am 16 years later sweating nonstop. I have a mini fan on me at all times.
WanderFish01@reddit
I can’t do HRT either. My body likes to grow tumors in various places. Luckily all non-cancerous so far but can’t risk it. Hot flashes were really bad the first 2 years for me. Not as bad now at 3 years in. I have noticed any time I’m stressed out they flare up and I get them again. Not fun.
Magerimoje@reddit
Rawdogging it here too. Menopause suuuucks.
Morticia9999@reddit
I’m sorry. That sucks.
blackcain@reddit
You know, these incels think men are super manly but they wouldn't know how to handle menupause or childbirth pain, or any pain for that matter. We men are wimps.
I hope you had the opportunity to have children if you desired them.
I also hope you had good care, my wife's care was awful. She also had cancer when she was in her early 30s with two young children and she no longer has a thyroid.
Grilled_Cheese10@reddit
I had just gotten through however many years of hot flashes and to the point that they were only occasional and not very severe when I had my cancer and had to start an aromatase inhibitor. Now I get hot flashes multiple times a day once again. They get uncomfortable, but at least they're not terribly severe.
Equivalent-Lab-3778@reddit
Ditto here 🙋♀️
dagny_taggert@reddit
Same.
Boxer03@reddit
Same. My only symptom when menopause hit was some hair loss and hot flashes. Compared to what some others go through, I lucked out except I was getting hit by hot flashes literally every 20-30 minutes. It was beyond exhausting. I finally went to my doctor and she started me on the estradiol patch. The first nite I put one on is the first full nite’s sleep I had in a year. I actually cried when I woke up because I’d forgotten how wonderful uninterrupted sleep felt. My only regret is I didn’t go to my doctor sooner.
No_Stress_8938@reddit
After talking with a friend about how much HRT helped her with the same symptoms I was having, I sat in a diner with my husband and cried, because my symptoms were validated (I felt like he thought I was making it all up) and I had made an appointment with a midlife clinic, and felt relief Was coming soon. I had no idea there were so many related symptoms. I am almost back to my old self,
Boxer03@reddit
I’m so glad you received care. Your story reminded me of when one nite, I was lying next to my husband and he was shocked to literally feel my body temp rise. He thought that the hot flashes were something I metaphorically felt, not something that was really physically happening within my body.
No_Stress_8938@reddit
My husband is a work in progress. I had to explain to him none of this is “in my head” and I cannot control the symptoms.
Boxer03@reddit
I understand how the working of women’s bodies can confuse some guys but is there anything more maddening than being told something you know is happening is “in your head”? 😡 Hang in there and know you have support here. 🙂
Temporary-Break6842@reddit
Good for you! The patch is truly mind blowing how quick and effective it is!

I was in that 20-30 minute category. It was awful. I thought there was something wrong with the AC in the house until I realized it was me. I opted for Estroven (over the counter) and my HF's stopped within 36 hours. It was bliss. It was my "candy" I took them for about 3 years and then you know, just "forgot" to take it and didn't have another episode until 8 months later.
I don't need it as much anymore but I keep it on speed dial (medicine cabinet). They've changed the formulary, so I can't take "energy" at night unless I want to be up all night mucking the stalls or polishing the silverware. The night time formula (they broke up the original to daytime/nighttime) would knock me out in about 20 minutes and I slept like the dead. It's amazing. I don't have to take it much anymore (I'm 60, things are tapering off, thank God, HF's started at 40), but I know it's there should I have one of those "eyes open like shutters" nights where I can't sleep.
Pris257@reddit
I just started the patch on Sunday. Last night was the first night I woke up that my clothes were soaked through from sweat. I still haven’t managed to sleep through the night but I am hopeful.
harley_hot_wheelz@reddit (OP)
Thank you for mentioning how often you get them. I am getting them every couple of hrs and seeing people say a couple times a day made me worry. I am going to make an appointment with the OB today when I get off work.
Boxer03@reddit
Good luck!
Birdsonme@reddit
Oh the sleep!! I’d forgotten how wonderful a full nights sleep was until I started the patch. It’s GLORIOUS!
Boxer03@reddit
Yes!
freya_kahlo@reddit
Same! I counted over 100 hot flashes on one day and then stopped counting. Losing sleep was making me unhinged more than anything. Now, I’ll sometimes sleep fully through the night!
Boxer03@reddit
Good luck! You really don’t realize how badly it affects you until you get back to “normal.” I slept with 2 fans, one pointed at my head and one at my body, had a stack of nightshirts by the bed to change as I soaked them throughout the night and carried a hand fan on me whenever I went out. I avoided HRT because my sisters both had hysterectomies in their mid-20s and they had such bad side effects from it, they had me scared to try it. I’m so glad I did. It truly improved my health so much. I hope any woman going thru it has as good an outcome as I was lucky enough to have.
lrbikeworks@reddit
My wife is on HRT. There’s no reason not to. The WHI was the worst thing to happen to women’s health in decades. The data was misinterpreted, misquoted, and to this day misinformed doctors who can’t let go of bad information about the risk of HRT are adamantly opposed to it. If your doctor is against it, you should get a second opinion.
castironbirb@reddit
Many women have had cancer, blood clots, etc and are ineligible to use it so there are reasons not to.
303_native@reddit
Mainstream docs won't give it to women who have hormone receptor positive breast cancer in their history, but that doesn't mean we cannot use it. It's a personal decision that requires consideration of each person's trade-offs. After trying oodles of supposedly expert docs (med school teaches virtually nothing about menopause and not nearly enough about hormones), I found a functional doc who allowed me to make an informed decision to go back on HRT. Well worth it to me. Cells all over your body need estrogen to function, not just your breast cells. Cells also need oxygen to thrive, but we don't tell breast cancer patients to hold their breath from here on out.
castironbirb@reddit
It's definitely a personal decision and I'm glad you were able to find someone who will help you feel good. At this point I would just be happy to not have to take any of the so-called endocrine therapy meds. My own natural menopause is fine, but the next level these meds take you to is not. I'm tired of their side effects being described as "just menopause symptoms" because they are far from it.🙄
303_native@reddit
Agree completely!! I stuck it out for a few months, but when you're seriously wishing you'd never found the cancer so it could've taken you out, praying you won't wake up in the morning, there comes a time when you run the numbers and decide to live your remaining days, even if there aren't that many. I predict one day we'll look back at this treatment and realize it was cruel and inhumane. At least for some of us. Also sick of hearing "if you can't tolerate it"... Walk a mile in my shoes, sir.
castironbirb@reddit
Oh I hear you on that!! It's easy for them to say when they don't know what it's like!
I suspect the real truth in treatment will eventually be found to be somewhere in the middle. The aromatase inhibitors are totally inhumane. I'd like to see them try 0 hormones for even a month! 😵💫
I really wish the hormonal aspect was more individualized... testing actual levels and adjusting medication dosages to get in a sweet spot of not fueling cancer but minimizing side effects. The current protocol of one-size-fits-all medication doesn't work well since some women get a recurrence anyway, some have debilitating side effects, some have no problems, etc.
303_native@reddit
Absolutely right. I think part of my downfall was going from supplemented to flat to entirely deprived in about 60 days. My body apparently needs very gradual changes in hormones. But there was only one way to do it according to the "experts." I hope we make progress on this soon. Blessings your way.
castironbirb@reddit
Ugh yeah going cold turkey on hormones is awful. I was told to remove my patch while I waited for my diagnosis but instead I did it gradually over a few weeks. I cut my patch in half and then a quarter of a patch and then left it on a few days after it was supposed to be changed. I guess it helped a bit.🤷♀️ Going through menopause and breast cancer treatment at the same time is not for the faint of heart! 😬
I think for so long research was just focused on getting us to stay alive. Now more of us are living normal length lives but living with the aftermath of treatment. We need more research into healthy survivorship and yes let's hope we make progress soon!
All the best to you!💙
Fuzzy_Song5443@reddit
Correct! Because I had a heart attack HRT was not an option for me.
taylorevansvintage@reddit
There are many types/methods of hormone therapy. Oral hormones are processed by the liver, which controls clotting, so they are contraindicated for people with clotting disorders. Transdermal patches and creams avoid the liver and do not increase clotting risk (risk is the same). Hormones don’t cause cancer but can feed a hormone sensitive cancer so mammograms are always good. Topical estrogen applied to the vulva is safe for everyone and keeps that micro biome healthy to avoid UTIs, atrophy, etc.(women die from UTIs).
Electric-Sheepskin@reddit
I mean I wouldn't say there's NO reason not to. It does slightly elevate your risk for certain diseases, but only slightly, and nowhere near what was once believed. Still, everyone's situation is different, and they may not want to take those risks.
lrbikeworks@reddit
The risks of NOT doing it are greater than the risks of doing it, presuming an individual is not particularly sensitive to a few specific cancers.
Electric-Sheepskin@reddit
So there IS a reason for some people not to do it. That's all I'm saying.
Here's another one: in the US, anyway, it can be cost prohibitive for some people.
To be clear, I'm not disagreeing with your general point, which is a good one I think, just the use of absolute language, if for no other reason than it will invite a lot of arguments.
eastbaypluviophile@reddit
I wish I could upvote this a bazillion times. Thanks for getting it. Are you a doctor or just extraordinarily well informed?
lrbikeworks@reddit
I am a lifelong athlete and I read a lot of science around exercise physiology, which led me to the effects of exogenous hormone, which led me to the WHI. Even as a relatively savvy layperson reading those numbers I was like…they stopped the study because of this?? I married an incredibly intelligent woman and she had shown me even more data about the profound benefits of HRT for peri/menopausal woman and the negligible risk.
It’s so frustrating that men of any age can get boners on demand through medicine, and supplemental testosterone with a blood test and a phone call, while women are dying of dementia, cardiovascular disease, and hip fractures, all of which can be mitigated with HRT.
eastbaypluviophile@reddit
Amen, bro. You could not be more correct. Unfortunately this is what the patriarchy has done (or not done, I suppose) for women’s health care. We are only starting to claw some basic respect and acknowledgement from the medical profession.

When your wife has a 1 out of every 3 women chance of developing breast cancer, you might pause and rethink your opinion.
I watched my mother die from it, after a mastectomy at 50 and recurrence of stage 4 at 83. In other words, it never left her body and eventually killed her. The only thing that slowed it down for a while was hormone blockers.
So, adding hormones to my already 29% chance isn’t an option and I’m glad to have a doctor who cares enough to guide me through it - having had breast cancer at 42, herself.

MisanthropicExplorer@reddit
there's an FDA approved drug for menopause vasomotor symptoms (as of 2024 I think), brand name is veozah or something like that. it completely stopped my hot flashes when I needed to pause HRT for a period of time.
peach_dragon@reddit
Yep. I do estradiol cream and my hot flashes have stopped. I still run a little bit warmer than I used to, but I'm not complaining, because I used to always freeze.
luthien310@reddit
My hot flashes stopped years ago but now I seem to run about 15 degrees hotter than everyone else, seriously. I don't like being hot but can't seem to get cold.
Last winter we had a day with a high of like 12 degrees. I walked into work in a tank top with a light, thin jacket. The receptionist said it must be cold because I zipped my jacket. I live in tank tops and shorts.
I'm hot all the time. I have a cooling blanket and bamboo sheets. Even with a fan I can't have a real blanket. I love the walk in coolers at Sam's for produce and dairy.
Nothing helps. Nothing.
peach_dragon@reddit
Hormones are weird, man. My husband is always cold now, whereas he used to run hot. We switched.
luthien310@reddit
We argue over the thermostat. He is always cold and wants it on like 78. I tell him that I will sit and sweat to the point that my hair is all wet at 72. He thinks I can't tell the difference between 71 and 72. He's dead wrong.
OnlyPhone1896@reddit

Free_Celebration9795@reddit
I understand the frustration of treatment resistant hot flashes. I am on estradiol oral and vaginal and progesterone it does absolutely nothing for my hot flashes. I bought a neck fan that I wear all the time. I also broke down and bought a Bedjet. It is a cooling system you attach to your bed and it blows hot or cool air into the customer top sheet. It is amazing I can finally sleep with a blanket and stay cool all night. Perhaps you would like to check it out for yourself.
luthien310@reddit
I just looked into one. The only problem is that my husband is always cold.
I think what we'll end up doing is a cooling sleep number bed when we need a new one. They have one that will heat and cool but it would cost my firstborn child. One that either cools or heats is affordable. So get one that cools and then put a heated blanket on his side.
I've also got a set of satin sheets and a flannel set. I'm going to cut them both down the middle and resew them to have two sets that are half satin (for me) and half flannel (for him). Win/win.
Free_Celebration9795@reddit
There is another cooling/heating system called an ooler. I believe it allows you to heat and cool at the same time. I looked at it, but it utilizes water and I was worried about an inadvertent leak. I love your idea of customizing the satin and flannel sheets! Sending you positive cooling thoughts and hugs of solidarity (if you want them)🧡
luthien310@reddit
I saw one like that and also worried about leaks. And I'll take the hugs too!

HRT was working like a dream for me, but I had to stop taking it due to high cholesterol. I am taking a newer drug named Veozah, which is non hormonal treatment for hot flashes and it works great. It doesn't help with no sleep, weight gain, foggy brain... but at least no hot flashes.

For those who can’t/don’t want to take HRT, I highly recommend trying a chaste berry supplement. Something in it mimics estrogen production… without the estrogen. A friend suggested it… I’d never heard of it… three weeks later and my hot flashes have decreased by about 90%.
YMMV but with a shot!
TikiUSA@reddit
Does HRT curb this insane weight gain too?
Breadtopian@reddit
Second this. HRT saved my sanity.
LongjumpingDebt4154@reddit
I’d love to but heard it’s not covered by insurance. My friend pays $800 for 1 HRT & $1200 for another (covers 3 mos she said).
freya_kahlo@reddit
She probably gets pellets or some other custom HRT. There are bioidentical hormones you can get cheaply. Estradiol in patch or gel form eliminates blood clot risk & micronized progesterone is what’s recommended now, as the progestin they used to prescribe created higher cancer risk. HRT is protective of urinary, genital & heart health. It’s recommended to get vaginal estrogen at minimum if you don’t get full HRT.
selekta_stjarna@reddit
Yes, it is just replacing the same hormones that are lost. It doesn't even reach the same levels as premenopausal, just enough to protect heart and brain health and stop symptoms like hot flashes.
selekta_stjarna@reddit
I have Aetna and mine is covered.

Second on the HRT. It's been a game changer both for hot flashes and for brain fog.
Capital-Meringue-164@reddit
Same. One very important thing to note that I learned is that hot flushes, itching dry skin, etc are all inflammation. And inflammation sets us up for heart, vascular and other organ issues. So treating the inflammation with estrogen and progesterone is doing more than alleviating uncomfortable symptoms (frankly that’s enough for me!). They are helping protect our heart and vitals for a long healthy life.
midwee@reddit

I’m 49. I just had a total hysterectomy—including removal of the ovaries. That means I’m experiencing surgical menopause with zero hormone production as of the surgery. Basically I’ve gone cold turkey on hormones until the HRT starts doing something. Other than the super fun cry-laughing over anything and everything, I walk around flop sweating from the raging heat of a thousand suns. I find it awful for you ladies going through this. Nature just dosn't seem fair to women. I keep saying this but sex ed should include a strong focus on the reproductive systems so that we can teach boys and men to understand what a woman goes though and how it affects their moods and abilities. We need to build a society that nurtures women.
My wife is going through this although no hot flashes, but plenty of hormonal changes. I understand that hormone replacement therapy is something she's doing. See your doctor.
For the hot flashes, consider getting a "bed jet". (Make sure you if you order that you use a throw away email account they tend to be aggressive in their marketing) but it is an nice way to cool down in bed especially if you're getting hot flashes at night.
Surprise_Fragrant@reddit
This is a case of, it's truly the thought that counts. Even if you taught all of us 14-year old girls and boys about peri/menopause, none of us would remember that education 40 years down the road.
Teenagers need to learn the basics, and what affects them in the near-term; we have decades to learn about things that affect us as we age.
blackcain@reddit
I just don't want to hear from teens and men, "why you acting that way, you PMS'ing?" - ugh so disrespectful.
Agreed, I know many young girls don't get told about periods and then they get one and it's like they think they are dying because they don't undersand why they are bleeding and why they are getting cramps or moody. But boys need to understand that too so that they know that these are important changes and that their friend now has the ability to create life - she's the butterfly out of the cocoon!
Surprise_Fragrant@reddit
Oh, I definitely think that boys and girls should learn about basic things like periods. But peri/menopause or prostrate problems? Not so much.

My point was not that they can’t understand what is happening to them right now, but that 12 year old boys won’t be able to hear shit about what will be happening to women 40 years from now which is when menopause occurs, which is the topic of this post.
Imaginary-List-4945@reddit
I keep waiting for hot flashes to happen (not that i want them to!) but nothing yet. I've only had four periods in the last year and three of them were barely-there spotting, so I figure I must be at least some distance into it...at what point are they supposed to hit?
Severe_Feedback_2590@reddit
I went into surgical menopause 20+ years ago (was 29) and never got it (51 now). My mom (82) never had it either. Not sure if my sister (52) has gotten menopause yet. I have read that Asian women don’t get hot flashes, my mom’s Japanese. If you had a lot of soy in your diet, maybe that’s why? Not really sure how true that is.
Imaginary-List-4945@reddit
That's interesting! I am vegetarian and eat a lot of tofu, so maybe that has something to do with it?
Severe_Feedback_2590@reddit
Possibly. I remember reading about it, the article talking about the Asian connection and it being soy related. Something for you to not have to deal with hopefully. Definitely glad I didn’t have it. I run hot anyways so I can’t imagine what hot flashes would be like.
Best_Ad9291@reddit
when mine were bad (they do pass thankfully) i would roll a towel (or two) and keep them in the fridge. it felt soooo nice and calming. I also cut out alcohol apparently that was a big help. Lastly, I bought something over the counter which also helped. I feel for you OP, hang on to the rollercoaster. it will pass. eventually

I'm four years into menopause, and still get hot flashes. They are decreasing in frequency and intensity, although I need a fan blowing on me at night. 😂
Mountain-Painter2721@reddit
Eventually, it will, mostly. I had "power surges" for about 4 years, and it was best in the wintertime, when I could stick my hands in snow and then cool my face and neck that way. I once drove to work with all the windows open on a 24F day.
It differs person by person though: my eldest sister, in her mid-70s, still has the occasional hot flash, while my next-oldest sister says she only ever had one, and it wasn't bad. My 3rd sister has been PM for a good 10 years but has hot flashes constantly, and has to dress in many layers so she can shed when she gets hot. I'm about 3.5 years PM and still get one or two a week - sometimes more, sometimes less.

So, I have no clue where I am. I only JUST got my first set of hormone test results at 51. I won't go into it here, but going to my primary Dr has been less than helpful with this whole thing. I don't know if I'm perimenopausal or menopausal so I don't know which group to join...
Overall_Lobster823@reddit
You're menopausal if you've gone a year without a period.
But it's a good good sub regardless. Many women still have some periods.
Fluffymanolo@reddit
There in lies the issue. Stupid me. Went to my primary Doctor and I think she doesn't know what the bleep she's doing when it comes to this kind of stuff...
Open_Confidence_9349@reddit
I went to a doctor for an ear infection once. Did you know being fat can make your ear hurt? He gave me nothing for it. I went and saw the nurse practitioner the next day and was given antibiotics and steroids. I had the receptionist put on my chart that I would not see that doctor again. For some reason, even if everyone else was all booked up, he always had availability.🙄
Fluffymanolo@reddit
I went into physical therapy because of the beginning stages of carpal tunnel. Intake lady went into a whole thing about weight. I appreciate the concern, but weight has nothing to do with the bad layout of my desk at work.

Because we don't know our own bodies, right? 🙄
I hate Doctors that don't listen and/or give you credit for living inside yourself for your entire fucking life.
On a serious note, an ob/gyn almost killed me and my baby by not listening.
Had I not absolutely insisted that I wasn't in agonizing pain just from being pregnant as he stated (kid you not) we would both be dead.
I did in fact take myself to the ER. Where they discovered I did have dangerously low potassium levels, resulting in skeletal muscle cramping and a massively enlarged bladder.
I peed for a solid minute straight once my muscles relaxed. Peed in front of strangers with no fucks given. Just sweet release. Gave birth to a healthy 9 pound daughter that very same night.
My point being... Listen to your body and fight for yourself honey!
Especially when no one else will.
u_of_okoboji_grad@reddit
Mine ordered the test but then immediately referred me to OBGYN to discuss the results.

Find an MD, naturopath, functional medicine doc or even a PA who’s trained under an MD who SPECIALIZES IN HORMONE THERAPY. I cannot stress this enough. I wasted so much time with regular docs, they really have no clue. Getting your hormones balanced is life changing. You will have immediate results. There are so many clinics now specializing in hormones. Hot flashes, lack of energy, low libido, weight gain around the waist, depression, hyper irritation, lack of motivation - it is all your hormones out of effing wack. It is fixable. It’s all about finding the right levels of progesterone, estrogen, testosterone, thyroid NP, DHEA, DIMS and key vitamins like ADK and Bs. It’s a little bit of trial and error to find the right levels for you but you’ll feel improvement within a matter of days. Don’t waste years like I did faffing around! Take it seriously and make it happen! Happy to answer any questions. I have literally tried everything and can offer my 2 cents. There are also new meds/supplements/topicals specifically for hot flashes & dry coochies too. Do not let yourself suffer. Happy to answer any questions.

I take maca root during the day for hot flashes and black cohosh at night for night sweats. It makes a big difference. I still run hot- always have, just now even hotter- so even when I take a brisk walk I fog up my glasses. Or get out of the shower. 🤣 But the sudden waves have died down substantially.

I went through menopause at 29 due to a total hysterectomy. It took me at least 6 years to go through all of the major hot flashes & major depression. I took a low dose estrogen for about 10 years & it finally got to the point where I didn’t need it anymore. As far as dryness, it’s still a huge issue. I’m constantly using Vaseline because I get tears very easily just from sitting down. My mom still takes Premarin & she says it is a lifesaver for her. I tried it but it made me sick. I promise it does get better. ❤️

Estroven supplement (the black cohosh one-purple box) eating foods that fight night sweats-lentils, low caffeine etc) and hormones. My symptoms were so bad I couldn’t sleep, my hair was falling out in clumps, I had massive mood swings, all day hot flashes HRT saved my life
ketolover65@reddit
Bio identical hormones saved me, talk with your doctor and do some research, I'm 3 years post menopause and 3 months on MRT and I will stay on them for as long as possible, I feel amazing, sleep is great, no hot flashes and I am feeling like my libdo is coming back
Iron_Butterflyy@reddit
I started taking gabapentin for another reason and all the sweating stopped and my mood swings are much more manageable. 47F here, I’m currently on a weight loss journey and have lost nearly 100 pounds in the past 14 months. For the last 9 of those my periods will last 2-3 weeks, stop for a few days and then start again. But damn what I’d give for “normal” side effects bc this shit is killing me!!

HRT is the way to go. I love it. Haven’t had a flash since and my perimenopausal anxiety went down significantly.
witchbelladonna@reddit
Learn what triggers your flashes. Sometimes, it's food (type or ingredients), weather, caffeine, etc. Once you know what triggers, they can lessen. Mine are triggered by humidity. My sister's trigger was caffeine. My sister was easy, she cut caffeine intake, and her flashes subsided. I'm fine as long as the humidity stays below 50% (why I live where I live and prefer long winters).

HRT has been a godsend. Hot flashes were ruining my life. I ended up in the ER because of them at one point because they would, like, start with chest pain. That was their "tell". I was getting 3+ an hour. I hadn't slept more than 2 hours at a pop in months. They will generally make you wait until you haven't had your period for a year to put you on HRT, if it's something you are interested in, but I got on it after 9 months of no period because they were affecting my life so much. Literally haven't had one since the day I started HRT.
I was chatting with a nurse at my primary's office and she's been having them for 10 years now. For some people they go away, for some they do not. It's a crapshoot. Being a woman is AWESOME.
harley_hot_wheelz@reddit (OP)
Man....I have a long way to go if I have to wait a year. It's only been 4 months. And so far the longest I have made it is 6 months between cycles. I am going to spend time on the menopause subreddit to see if there are some natural things I can do in the meantime.

Not to scare you, but hot flashes are not benign. For some women they can last for years, even decades. Now that I don't have to think about these things, I'm amazed at how much thought and energy I had to put in to having my period. Making sure I had enough tampons in the right places (purse, work, car, bathrooms, etc.), tracking dates, tracking events and sex/relationships in relation to those dates, ruining and/or cleaning underwear, considering what my moods were attributed to (PMS or assholes?), making sure I had the right drugs to counteract the cramps and insomnia, etc. It makes me really angry that men never have to think about any of that, their entire lives! And now that I don't have to either, it's such a relief!

I became a single mom when my sons were 2 and 7. I had to explain what was going on to them, it was so bad. My youngest especially was one to worry. I didn't want him stressed that I was on the couch with a heating pad.
And my moods were not normal two days before. Like, I so obviously wasn't myself they'd ask if it was "lady stuff" going on. I didn't want to explain this to them, but it stopped me from saying anything mean when they asked why I was being a raging asshole.
I didn't have anyone to help shield them.

I could handle the hot flashes. I had fans and cooling towels. It was the brain fog that got me. I would be driving and forget how to drive or where I was going. It was affecting my job. No one ever talks about that. My goal was to go through menopause naturally. I lost the war.

I can't take HRT either. Drinking a tall glass of ice water has been the best way for me, since the heat comes from the inside. When I'm in the sun, I want to rip off my skin. 😬

I recommend the book The Menopause Manifesto by Dr. Jen Gunter. It is organized by symptoms/issues, so you can target what you need. She covers HRT - the pros and cons of different methods, who are candidates, etc. Might be helpful for dealing with the temp issues if you are a candidate for HRT.

Added that to my Amazon cart. Thank you!

I’d be ok with the temp changes if I wasn’t losing my mind with short term memory loss. I have Tiles on everything important and I have to ring them multiple times a day. I have to ping the phone from the Apple watch at least once an hour if I’m not doom scrolling with the phone in my hand. It’s horrible!!

I will second the comments about taking vitamins. I just happened to get some really good vitamins from my sister and took them for about a month and noticed hey I don't think I've had a hot flash. So I went off the vitamins for a week and sure enough The hot flashes came back. When I ran out of those expensive vitamins I found a women's plus multivitamin at a big box store and they worked just fine. Good luck to you.

Didn’t hit me too hard. I still get a flash every now and again but they are lessening. Been over perimenopause a year now. But one good thing is No period anymore!!! Yay!!! And I had just bought a diva cup to tru and never had a period again after that 😁

Fingers crossed. I'm 51f and have been on Depo Provero for almost 2 decades. I took the blood test and I may or may not be in perimenopause, the only way to know for sure is to come off it. Nope, not happening. I'm scared, in the last 3 months I've had 3 hot flashes, long like 10 min hot flashes. My mom wore a fan around her neck for hers. I don't want to be that person.

It will get easier. I hit menopause early. Around 43-45. I’m 56 now. Those uncomfortable feelings will go away. The hot flashes will stop. Give yourself some grace and keep stuffing your bra with ice. You will be okay.

PahzTakesPhotos@reddit
I'm 55 and I started having perimenopause symptoms at age 34. I think when it was all over is when my thermostat stopped working. I used to be a "cold is better" kind of person, but suddenly I was wearing my thick, old-man cardigan in the summer with the AC on (the vent under my desk was a delight in the hot flash days).
Right now, I'm wearing a maxi skirt and tank top, with my plaid fleece over it because I'm indoors with the AC on. And the winter, sitting in my house, sometimes I'm wearing the cardigan over the fleece with a scarf (I have short hair).
My mom used to say that when she had her hysterectomy (in 1985), they took out her thermostat because that's what happened to her heat/cold tolerance. Now I get what she meant. All in all, I'd still rather deal with a chill and need an old man cardigan than be overheated. There's only so naked we're allowed to get before people start throwing old vegetables at me and calling the police.

It does when you get to the other side. My advice to you - accept who you are on the other side of 'the change' because women who try to get back to what they were pre-change tend to be miserable. I'm 60 this year. The tropical moments started at 40. While they aren't as intense as they used to be (less estrogen, the milder they become), I still have "warm moments". Some women have them well into their 70's. I have a friend who's 64 and she's yet to have a hot flash. I'm still mad at her. LOL
Alcohol can intensify them or make them creep back up.

My symptoms were looooonnnngggg periods. Like 60 days long. And depression. After taking progestin for a few MK rha to help with the periods, I was worried about the cancer risk with that type of progesterone. I found bio identical HRT. This has been a lifesaver. I feel so much better and I lost 20 pounds. I will never stop taking it now that I’ve been on it for almost two years. It really took almost 6 months of it to make me feel better. More energy, better mood, better libido and better weight control.

It subsides after a while for most but I think each person is a bit different.
I (53f) have found that drinking a lot of water WITH an electrolyte tab in each top up was the only way to get the flashes to happen less often, and be less intense. That’s just me.
I don’t salt my food and don’t cook with salt, my PA suggested I try the electrolyte bc I might be sodium deficient. I’m prone to low blood pressure anyways. Alcohol makes the flashes stronger and more frequent.
It works more than anything else I have tried. No one ever spoke to me about HRT, so I finally decided I need to start the conversation to see if it’s right for me at my upcoming appt.
I stopped having a regular cycle June 2014 (I was 42, newly widowed, but was told it was “just grief”) and then by 2020 completely stopped. The hot flashes started 2018. I now wear only flip flops or slides, no socks, being able to keep my feet cool also helps. Boots only when there is snow.
Some people swear by ashwaghanda, St. John’s wort, valerian, bitter cohosh etc. I have a linen closet’s worth of supplements that are worthless for this.

I had breast cancer. The tumor was estrogen positive. I would NEVER recommend HRT. I was put on an estrogen blocker at age 53, which made menopause much worse. You just learn to deal with it. I live in the Phoenix, AZ area. Summer temperatures can get 115F or higher. I sleep with 2 fans, one sheet covering me. Air conditioning is set at 77F. I take Gabapentin and Trazadone before bed. They help me sleep through the night sweats.

I had to have a CT scan of my head last week. I had a 2nd scan with contrast. It was a first for me. My sister had breast cancer so my doctor was hesitant to give me HRT. I’m not sure why she agreed to prescribe it for me now, I didn’t think to ask. I’m just glad that something changed in her opinion and that I’ll be set up before the heat of summer comes.

It didn’t get easier for me. The hot flashes were joined by joint pain and bladder leakage. Sex felt like sandpaper. I was rolling an ankle every time I went up and down stairs or stepped off a curb. My skin, hair and nails started looking like trash.
I started HRT two years ago. I have a uterus, so I do estrogen and progesterone. And the bladder leakage/pelvic floor thing kept bugging me, so I use a vaginal estrogen tablet: Vagifem.
For those of us with recurrent bladder infections: please talk to your doctor about Vagifem. There was a paper fairly recently. I think it was a British medical journal. Check it out.

Tiny_Animal_3843@reddit
I'm 51. At 48 , I started menopause symptoms. At 49, the hot flashes were severe. I would have to wake up every night and change my pajamas and usually lay on top of a towel so as not to bother my partner by changing the sheets. You could actually see the outline of my body sweat sweat on the sheet. During the day I would spontaneously combust! It was horrible. If I had a pair of sunglasses.Or reading glasses on top of my head they would have a condensation on them when I would take them off from the heat. My APN put me on Paxil 10mg to start. It was fantastic. It worked wonderfully. I was on it for about a year and then she weaned me off of it and my hot flashes never came back.
julnyes@reddit
Same, I am a few months into the taking the 10mg of paxil and haven't had a single hot flash / night sweat since I started. My doctor also plans to wean me off it after a year.
The funny thing is the number of doctors who think I am taking it for depression and I have to correct them and say "Nope its for the SWEAT!"
Tiny_Animal_3843@reddit
You are so right, and I'm glad it was helpful for you! I fell and broke my wrist last year, and while I was in the ER, they asked me about my med list. I told him I was on Paxil for debilitating hot flash symptoms. Im a RN x 29 yrs. Even after a triage nurse, the ER nurse, the PA , the MD reviewed my med list with me, my records STILL LISTED depression as a diagnosis! I told at least 3 of them it is for night sweats and hot flashes. They looked at me like I was nuts! My regular APN said it works, it's cheap, and she respected my wish not to take HRT! Good luck! Im happy you are feeling better! ❤️
julnyes@reddit
it seems like it isn't common knowledge among doctors I guess. They see Paxil and just assume you are taking it for the usual reasons. As I understand it, 10 mg isn't even a high enough dose for people who are taking it for depression.

They are not going to be pleased with me but I will be getting some direction.

HRT was great for this!
Angry_Tomato_@reddit
I tried to tough it out for like five years because I read that they might go away. They did not. I was having up to 20 hot flashes a day and was feeling like a zombie from disrupted sleep.
Eventually it was too much to bear. I started the lowest dose of hormone replacement therapy and the hot flashes are gone now. My quality of life is awful with hot flashes and I hope I can stay on HRT for my lifetime.
_Rebel_Scum_77@reddit
Finally seeing a gyno doctor who prescribed Progesterone and estradiol helped me a lot. I haven't had a hot flash in months.

Hot flashes were making me miserable. I started HRT in January (estradiol patch and oral progesterone), and they have mostly been eliminated, along with joint/hip pain and depression.

Thanks to cancer, I’ve been post menopausal since I was 32. And I’ve been on HRT ever since (57 now). I know there are risks, but I just can’t deal with the hot flashes, sleepless nights and overall anxiety that come with menopause.
kellyinwanderland@reddit
The risks aren't what we were led to believe. There has been some newer research that has poked holes in that stupid Women's Health Initiative that was the standard for 20 years. Now we are finally getting some good, long term scientific studies. I also take HRT. It has been a life saver!
TheOtherPam323@reddit
Thanks! I did hear recently that some of the anti HRT claims were overblown. I do agree with you it’s been life changing. I tried to get off HRT once, years ago, and I was so miserable. Never again! 😉

2nd this!! Please friends, head over to the Menopause sub for helpful info. Hot flashes are only a part of what’s happening to our bodies. Estrogen, Testosterone are incredibly important and dropping levels wreak havoc on our bodies. 💕
LongjumpingDebt4154@reddit
I’m dying for HRT, I heard it wasn’t covered by insurance though. I have a friend who forms out $2k every 3 mos for her HRT
Civil_Concentrate_23@reddit
It depends on what you need and what insurance/ dr you have! I live in a blue state, I get vaginal estrogen and estrogen patch covered. I pay out of pocket for low dose testosterone compound cream. Feel free to message me or hop on menopause reddit. I started with my PCP for E cream and got referral to gyno.
I had to have hysterectomy recently so went into surgical menopause. 😳 Depending on who your PCP is, what state you live in, you might get covered. Please don’t give up! I hope you feel better. 💐
Gusticles@reddit
Wow! I'm in Canada so it's much cheaper. For Estrogel and progesterone it's about $50 CDN per month. I found that my mood improved as well and I have much more energy.
RunRunDMC212@reddit
I just got on the hormones a few months ago. Best decision I ever made. Helping with my energy levels and skin dryness issues as well.
My doctor also suggested black cohosh and evening primrose oil for night sweats - there is a lot of anecdotal evidence that women have found success with them, but she also admits that the research on this is still on the fence. I worry about the inconsistency of dosages you get in the supplement industry and I’m on a few other medications that I don’t want to inadvertently mess with, so I’m holding off on trying supplements on top of my HRT.
The Menopause Manifesto has been a great guide to help me figure all of this stuff out.

Some may find this a good jumping off point to do some more research
Soy and Menopause – Succinct Summary:
Soy contains isoflavones, plant-based compounds that mimic estrogen in the body. During menopause, estrogen levels drop, leading to symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, and bone density loss.
What’s known: • Hot Flashes: Soy isoflavones can modestly reduce frequency and severity, especially in women who are naturally able to metabolize them into equol, a more potent form. • Bone Health: Some evidence shows slight improvements in bone density, but not enough to replace standard treatments. • Heart Health: May slightly improve cholesterol profiles, offering minor cardiovascular benefits. • Breast Cancer Risk: No clear evidence of increased risk in postmenopausal women; may reduce risk in some populations.
Bottom Line: Soy is generally safe and can offer mild symptom relief for menopause, especially hot flashes, but effects are modest and variable by individual.

I couldn't do HRT, thanks to endometriosis. 😮💨 There are OTC meds that help. It does take time for it to work, like a week or two. Once it kicks in hot flashes are almost gone. You don't have to take it forever. I was slammed into menopause when I had to have a hysterectomy at 32. Hot flashes sucked so much. I took the OTC meds and within six months I stopped taking it OTC. No hot flashes since. I could be misremembering but it didn't take long before my body adjusted and it stopped. I like feeling cool. So hot flashes sucked. A damp cool rag on the back of my neck helped my hot flashes chill out. Did I have hot flashes while on the OTC drug? Yes, but they were so manageable. It was day and night. I hope you find relief soon.

The loss of estrogen is doing a lot of damage to your body and brain that you can't see. Hormone therapy is now recommended for all women going through peri and post menopause with very few exceptions. Go to an actual menopause provider, not your GP or gyn. Find one on menopause dot org. Read Next Level by Stacy Sims and the Menopause Manifesto by Jen Gunter.

My wife said to me, "When I go through the menopause it will be the worst thing that has ever happened - to you."
She's always been insanely hot, but the menopause made this literal. Crazy and overheated.
Then she took HRT. She says it was like getting her old self back, with her energy levels and sanity. It was lovely.

My doctor put me on hormone replacement therapy and it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me! I highly recommend you at least look into it. No reason to live with hot flashes. Also, the body starts aging and changing when you go through menopause so when you go in hormone replacement therapy it prevents Disease diseases and other aging related issues from developing.
If you haven’t already talked to your doctor about it I highly recommend talking to your doctor about it. But make sure you’ve got a good doctor that’s up on current medicine and research! You get some old dude and they’re gonna give you information from the 1990s that’s no longer relevant.

Some things that may help:
A portable neck fan. You drape it around your neck and it blows air up your neck to your head.
Dressing in cotton layers. Gauze, etc work too. Having changed of clothes when you get sweaty.
Wearing hair up. Hair on your neck is just a hot flash waiting to happen.

I went through menopause twice, once in my 30s while I was on tamoxifen for post chemo treatment and again in my 50s, lucky me!! The hot flashes and mood swings I could tolerate somewhat, the night sweats suuuucked. Best advice I ever got was to get one of the rectangular flat gel ice packs and put it frozen under your pillow at bedtime. When the sweats come, put the ice pack on whatever body part needs it and flip the pillow to the icy side to cool your head. Damn near saved my sanity.

It does... eventually. I had sudden, complete menopause at age 42 because of having a total hysterectomy. The surgery wasn't even about "female" problems! I had been totally regular even since having a tubal ligation at 23 years old, never again using birth control. I didn't take HRT because I didn't want to just prolong it.
Anyway, I'd be at work in a meeting and it would hit me. I swear I was steaming and could just tell my face and everything was red with heat. Sweating. Trying to sleep was the worse. One minute I'm cold, the next I'm burning hot and throwing off all the covers, fan blowing on me. Then I'm shivering cold again and putting the covers back on. It was hell.

Male Depends underwear became my best friend. I'd did the usual pad on panties. Then I would pull the depends over everything as the last resort to protect sheets (especially if I was sleeping outside of my home.)
It worked. A few time I had a massacre but not on my sheets! 😂
Male because I'm a front sleeper and the extra absorbant lining extends almost to the waist. The female stays in the crotch area.

Ironically I am on Gabapentin for anxiety (it's a low dose). I have only started getting the intense hot flashes after my last period at the end of January and I have been perimenopausal for the last 5 (maybe 6) years. I would get a hot flash every once in a great while but this time around it has been so intense.

Slow-Complaint-3273@reddit
Seriously consider talking to your doctor about HRT. They just released a study showing how menopause affects your body’s ability to process dopamine, one of the major feel-good hormones. When this cycle is disrupted, it can cause perimenopausal anhedonia - you can lose the ability to experience joy. So on top of feeling frustrated when your body does weird stuff, you can’t be happy when something good happens.

I've only had one so far and it was not enjoyable. Sadly I still have my period monthly though it only lasts 2 days. I'll be thrilled when that's done. I'm 51.

If you can't take HRT 400mg vitamin E and 40mg Black Cohosh. My Dr actually recommended that. It doesn't work right away but when it does kick in it's a blessing!

The hot flashes ONLY lasted me for a few years. It definitely gets better.

Your own personal summer - a prize you win for surviving years of monthly bleeding. The hot flashes went away after a few years. The constantly feeling a little too hot never had after ten years. I found keeping my upper back cool helped a lot. You can buy this camping towel that gets cool when you spin it in the air. It really helped.

It started for me at 42, I’m 46(ugh almost 47). The hot flashes are insane. And I think I’m almost done, no period for 6.5 months and bam it’s back. And the count starts over. I’m just anxiously waiting the end of it also.

I’ve been dealing with this for at least 5 years, I’m 53 now. My hot flashes can be brutal too. Don’t be afraid to try HRT if other the counter methods don’t work for you. I’ve been told it gets better, not quite there yet either.
KatJen76@reddit
I am afraid, though. Didn't it increase the risk of heart attacks?
kellyinwanderland@reddit
Early studies suggested an increase, but that has been debunked with recent studies. The Women's Health Initiative study was poorly done and had many, many flaws.
amethystCEOJ@reddit
There’s risks for everything but I don’t think it’s as bad for you as it’s made out to be. I’m sure your doc would tell you all the side effects and risks.
digawina@reddit
This. You know what else puts you at risk for a whole host of things? No sleep. My hot flashes didn't allow me to ever get a good night's sleep.
digawina@reddit
I went to one cardiologist and he said my being on HRT was his biggest concern with me. I asked my gynecologist (female) and primary (female) and they kind of gave him a side eye. I was told it's the estrogen that has caused concern, but with the transdermal patch, the risks are greatly reduced. I then went to a new cardiologist (female), and she was like, "I'm no expert, but we know you're on it, and we can just monitor things like your blood pressure and your cholesterol for changes." HRT on its own isn't something that's going to, like, strike you out of the blue with a heart attack.
That second cardiologist had me get an at home blood pressure cuff (for this and for another med I was on that actually WAS increasing my blood pressure) and she was like, if it's consistently elevated, then we talk. I went off that other medicine (Wellbutrin) and it went back to normal. HRT doesn't raise mine. Also, my gynecologist said that if the cardiologist had concerns, then we could talk about alternatives, so all is not lost if HRT isn't right for you.
Common_Poetry3018@reddit
I don’t remember reading this. I believe it may be contraindicated when the patient has a family history of breast cancer. Best to ask a menopause specialist.

I bought my wife so many fans. Three of the tower oscillating ones for the living room and dining room area that run from morning to night. Couple of rechargeable handheld ones so she always has one nearby. I am in peri-menopause. It is like heat radiating from the inside, and it comes on so fast. I get dizzy and short of breath. My regular male OBGYN who I saw all through my child-bearing years said some of my hormones are low, but not enough to warrant treatment. I found a new OBGYN who has an amazing bedside manner and feels like a friend I've known for years, hoping she will help me somehow. My mom and sister also had the change early.
Mugwumps_has_spoken@reddit
I'm legit terrified of the hot flashes. My younger years I had severe issues with heat intolerance and passing out because my body decided I was too hot (didn't matter what the air temperature was).
It's been nearly 30 years since the last time I had an incident (of actually passing out because of it).
I don't want to start having it again.

O dear, I wish I could. But I have known women that suffered for 15 or more years. My own mother still had hot flashes in her sixties and it started when she was 44.
The only thing that might help (a bit rigorous though): I started menopause when I was 41 and my Hashimoto went crazy too. My thyroid kept on growing so finally 6 years later, they decided to get the damn thing out.
Best.Decision.Ever!
From the day after the surgery till now (17 years later), I have never experienced a hot flash again. Or night sweats. Or mood swings and brainfog. As a matter of fact: I didn't have any menopausal complaints ever again.

I went to a naturopath. I bought progesterone on line, it’s called Progonol. I put about a pea size blob of it on my inner arm. Three weeks on and one week off. You start on the 7th day after your period starts. Doesn’t cause breast cancer. Stopped my 50x a day hot flashes. I used it for 10 years and now I’m good. I was debilitated by hot flashes.

Mistyam@reddit
It does get better. But it could be a couple of years. I used to get hot and sweaty down one side of my body, in addition to the hot flashes that were all over my body. So strange. In addition, not only what the hot flashes come out of nowhere, but if it was a warm day out and I walked from my card work I would immediately start sweating it wouldn't be able to stop sweating for like an hour . Eating would also trigger hot flashes. And as much as I hated the hot flashes, the massive periods during the last two years of my cycle were even worse. I could only wear black pants for the longest time. I seriously thought I was going to get anemia with how much I was bleeding. But the symptoms that persist for me are the poor memory and the brain fog. That doesn't seem to be going away.
Emotional_Mess261@reddit
I’m typically a cold person, my kids will tell you stories of me wearing a sweatshirt on Florida beaches in July. Now I want no clothes most of the time. Try putting your hand just over the top of your head during a hot flash, you can feel the heat. Surprised no one sees the heatwaves above me. Other weird things are coming, the most disturbing to me is forgetting shit. Where is the remote that was just in my hand, what was I supposed to buy, did I turn off the stove. Literally thought it was way too soon dementia. It irritates tf outta me, then the stress spikes a hot flash.

I’m a couple of years into the serious overheating. No sign of letting up yet. I was told by a friend that this can go on for years. It was 15 for her. I’m on HRT, and while it eases a lot of things, the overheating isn’t one of them.

I’m 54 and just had my last period in March. I thought they would NEVER end - like I was being punished. What I didn’t realize was that the punishment was yet to come because these sudden moments of my body incinerating into a blast from a solar flare? These are apparently the reward now. I think I am sweating out so much hydration suddenly that at some point my body will just produce ashes. I wanna cry so badly but I can’t spare the moisture.

Every body is different, I (f57) hit menopause at 37. I’ve had hot flashes since. My heat tolerance is less than zero. I’d rather stand outside barefoot in January than sweat another drop of sweat. I sweat so badly I get dehydrated, dizzy and get heart palpitations. Once I rehydrate and drink electrolytes I’m back to normal. It’s super frustrating for me. The ability to smell my own stink is overwhelming, husband says he doesn’t notice anything but man I think I smell awful. Yay.😑

There is a wonderful resource in Dr. Mary Claire Haver who is a board certified OB/GYN out of Galveston Texas. She is on all platforms. She admits that she sucked as a menopause physician until she herself went through menopause. Now she is boldly out there trying to right some wrongs. I highly suggest a neck fan, cooling blanket, and hrt if you qualify.

I know it is not energy efficient, but I miss having a fridge/freezer with a top freezer... because it was awesome to be able to stand there with my head stuck inside. But dammit, the bottom drawer freezers not only don't hold shit (and make it more of a pain to get at), there is no way to even semi replicate the relief that comes from shoving your head in.
Your whole body heats up, but being able to flash freeze your head seems to give a lot more relief, y'know?

I'd say welcome to the club, but it's no fun over here! I had a hysterectomy at 41, and even though I kept my ovaries, menopause hit me like a ton of bricks at 43. I still keep my house like an ice box, and my husband hates it, but he can put more clothes on!

Not to be a downer, but watch out for abnormal bleeding (which can be a sign of endometrial cancer). It’s really hard to tell the difference between abnormal bleeding due to perimenopause and abnormal bleeding due to cancer. Trust me—I know (diagnosed with cancer that my doctor had interpreted as perimenopause for several years). If you catch it early before it spreads outside the uterus, it can be curable (just a hysterectomy).
