I'm a full time reducer at Waitrose, have anything you would like to ask?

I saw a recent post on here about buying reduced items, some days can be great, other days can be hell, but is there any questions you would like to ask, I can tell you being a reducer isn't as easy as you would think.

HELLP ME. I asked my manager for the day off an hour before the shift and he said no.(context I’m a university student completing my resubs, if they aren’t perfect I fail the whole year and my deadline was the next day) I then say to my manager I cannot come in I’m sorry bla bla. No response to this from him my next shift is tomorrow and it said on work day I’ve been transferred to a different manager and my job role has changed am I cooked?

Why do you buy reduced items in Waitrose instead of making a shopping list for Tesco and sticking to it?

I know this is 5 years late, but a shopping list for tescos is great for staples, the waitrose discount section is where you get the odd luxury treat. My wife and I quite often wander in to look for fruits and meats especially, which can be bought at a decent price.

I cant stand them and neither can any other reducer, I call them scavengers, I take care of myself and if people begin to crowd around me, I just stop and look at them till they walk off, sometimes might have to act like i didn't realise somebody was there and the trolley might accidentally bump them :), im also very blunt, if you're standing abit away from me and just having a look, go ahead, I apprecite it, but if you're grabbing the items out of my hand etc, asking "How much is this" etc, I'm gonna be very rude. Most of the time, reducers take the stuff away to reduce for that specific reason, but personally I get a kick out of being a prick to people, especially those who have no patience, also recently had issues with reducers being shouted at by customers because we didn't hold onto a specific item etc.

As an ex Morrison’s staff members often in charge of reductions, I also couldn’t stand them. The worst people were other Indian people. They’d see my Indian face and start talking to me in Hindi/Punjabi/Gujarati or any other language they spoke. I do speak Hindi but refused to admit to it in front of them. ‘Excuse me?’ became my favourite phrase. The only English words I’d hear of their mouths were ‘darling’ and ‘reduction’.

Mostly asking for reductions well ahead of time. There are set times. And could only reduce by a certain amount at a certain time and it varies by department / how much you had to reduce that day. So the fresh prep counter for example (all that cooked chicken and fried foods counter) couldn’t start reducing before about 6/6:30 most days. Pizza counter was about 7. And you start at 25%. But you could bet your ass there would be some fucker rocking up at 5 asking this darling to reduce early because they have to go pick up their grandkids from badminton and she wanted that piece of chicken or hat pizza for dinner. And yet somehow these people would still be in the shop three hours later! These regulars would spend HOURS walking around the shop picking up food from different counters every single day. I have to admire their dedication but I fucking hated the sight of them. So glad those days are behind me.
