Legalize beating people up if they harass you.

If someone is following you around in a public space and being a nuisance, you should be able to clock them. Simple as.
MordaxTenebrae@reddit
Why don't we just bring back duelling? Or like the viking holmgang.
shasaferaska@reddit
I challenge you to a holmgang.
MordaxTenebrae@reddit
Shall we make a square of branches?
shasaferaska@reddit
Yes. We will meet by the old oak tree the morning after the next full moon.
MordaxTenebrae@reddit
Okay, I'll bring the mead and my axes 🪓🪓🪓
FriedSmegma@reddit
Mutual combat is legal in some parts of the
double_96_Throwaway@reddit
Yeah but there has to be a cop present, and if anyone gets injured you’re still going to jail.
regulator9000@reddit
That's legal in some states
Thebabaman@reddit
Sure but people claim alot of things to be harassment when in reality it isnt
CarlJustCarl@reddit
Like following a female in a parking lot at night and it turns out your both park near each other?
CivilMath812@reddit
Women have claimed looking at them the wrong way is harassment, and rape, (2 different women). And I don't mean looking the wrong way as in whatever, but as in, looking at a person to examine their hair and outfit.
Telaranrhioddreams@reddit
Weird because every man who has harassed me says the same shit. Oh and the 2 menwho have raped me both tell all of their friends what a lying liar I am. Man if only that were true I would save so much money on intensive PTSD therapy.
CivilMath812@reddit
Not that stuff isn't a problem, but declaring anyone you don't like and thus, they don't deserve rights isn't the solution. This whole topic touches on that, that's the entire point. Also, of I recall correctly, there are now multiple businesses in the world that have said, they will avoid hiring women for certain white collar jobs if possible, because doing so prevents drama that slows down work, and saves the company a lot of money in lawsuits, and investigations of lawsuits that ultimately proved the "sexual harassment", was literally just, a dude walked into a room to get paper for a printer, said hi to a lady, and she got offended cause he was "ugly as hell".
Stuff is a problem, but there are better ways to handle it.
Telaranrhioddreams@reddit
Fuck you :)
Budget_Trifle_1304@reddit
Did have a gun pulled on me, was a bit tense.
In another life it would have been some kind of Babylon Bee funded rom-com meet cute.
CarlJustCarl@reddit
Why did you get a gun pulled on you? Tell the Reddit jury.
Budget_Trifle_1304@reddit
Got off the train from Chicago to Waukegan, almost one in the morning.
Two cars left in the far lot. Mine and another. Mine is further out, hers is closer.
Older woman walking about 50 feet ahead of me. She nears her car and slows down. IIRC she's trying to unlock the car, but I wasn't paying much attention. It was the middle of winter and I was coming off six hours of grad school classes at DePaul, still another hour to drive home.
As I'm passing by her car, maybe three parking spaces away, she wheels around and I'm staring at the business end of a Glock 42... which I'd only learn later.
She yells "Leave me alone"
I yell back, hands up and out now "Will do. I'm heading to my car over there"
She looks back at the car and lets her arm back down. "Oh... Oh my god I'm so sorry I thought you were following me..."
"Understood. My bad. What kind is it I've been thinking about getting a permit."
(this is how I know it was a Glock 42)
Saw her one more time that semester and gave her a wide berth, but as we pulled out she flashed her headlights.
Slight-Egg892@reddit
This is why you can't trust random people with guns.
CarlJustCarl@reddit
Not guilty
double_96_Throwaway@reddit
Fuck I really hate trying to defend this because most of the time yeah that’s probably why, but it is also possible you were just going to the store.
Thebabaman@reddit
Yes but its a coincidence that we were parked together
baumpop@reddit
Talk shit get hit simple asÂ
Intelligent-Fox-2286@reddit
I was not born in this country, so I agree with your sentiment. People in America think because of the first amendment they have the right to say whatever they want to anyone. Where I come from, your words can get your ass beat and no one will bat an eye. We also don't condone bullying, and abuse.
AbbreviationsWeak732@reddit
hope you try that with someone armed
Intelligent-Fox-2286@reddit
So you're saying that an armed person has the right to say whatever they want to me and I have to be okay with it?
AbbreviationsWeak732@reddit
yeah, i hope someone puts you down if you try to assault someone for saying mean words
baumpop@reddit
Where I come from you get beat the fuck down. Oklahoma. I’ve been in like 20 fights that just popped off next to me cause people started talking shit.Â
Not one shooting.Â
regulator9000@reddit
I don't trust your judgement
baumpop@reddit
Thats 100% normal. I’m a total stranger. I could be a bot. More likely than not I am.Â
Don’t trust anybody you can’t physically punch in the face for their actions.Â
sharktopiss@reddit
It's reddit. These people are violently allergic to obvious jokes
baumpop@reddit
Not even a joke. The Zapreme Cort ruled in 1921 br*wn v us

That’s all well and good until you realize provoking violence usually leads to more violence. And it’s only a matter of time until that means you’re in a coma or worse
terra_technitis@reddit
How about the winner gets to decide what is or isn't harassment.
SniperMaskSociety@reddit
So the bigger/stronger person? No way that could backfire
terra_technitis@reddit
So we are in agreement then!!
Is what I might say if I were as blind to other people being facetious as you; as your sarcasm indicates.
opetheregoesgravity_@reddit
People say shit like this but cannot fathom carrying a firearm for self-defense
Swimming_Rich_5164@reddit
doesnt germany have something like this? like the right to defend your honor or something if some bastard comes up to you and starts talking smack you can give him one to shut them up and restore your honor? im not a german so please correct me if im wrong.
JohnFresh669@reddit
Where I live you can beat someone and get fined like 200 euros, so that's what I do.
Intelligent-Fox-2286@reddit
When i arrived here, I was in middle school. I learned that if someone called me the N word I couldn't retaliate. If they made fun of me, they'd call the police when I fought back. This is the America I was introduced to.
BanAccount8@reddit
So if someone is standing in public using their cell phone. Maybe taking a video. And I don’t like it I should beat them up because they were filming in public?
I only ask because some people literally call that Harrahs meant and it’s 100% legal.
Complete-Sherbet2240@reddit
It's weird right, because due to social media public filming has gotten more chaotic. Someone taking B roll, or making content generally keeping to themselves - absolutely not a problem.Â
Blocking the Brooklyn bridge pedestrian path so that you can take engagement videos - I think it is at least fair to take their equipment and toss it in the east river if the refuse to desist. I would say there is a certain point of disrespecting a mass of people, or targeted harassment of a group of people aggregates to assault.Â
We're also in a world now where psychological harm is begining to be recognized. Just because the harm someone does doesn't leave a mark or break the skin, doesn't mean it's non-existent. So harassment or civil disturbance is absolutely a form of assault that can cause mild harm and aggregates. Why should a member of the public be penalized for ultimately protecting themselves or others from harm if it is done within reason of public consensus.Â
PopGoggle@reddit
That is legal it’s called self defense hahaha what
Redsit111@reddit
See, but then suddenly everyone who wants go legally get into a fight is "being harassed" and then we have everyone beating up everyone and it's only a matter of time till someone is losing and the guns come out.
ProCommonSense@reddit
I support this and so much more. For example. If someone road rages me.. I should just be able to pit them.
Interesting_Door4882@reddit
All you've done is show us you're the type this law would exist to protect against.
ProCommonSense@reddit
So, we protect a person who serves to only harass someone in a public space, or worse, on the road... and you want protection from me? We are such a backward society.
How about if people understand there are consequences to being a dick then they might be less likely to be a dick?
Juan_Mira@reddit
I generally don't condone a whole lot of violence in real life, but sometimes it really is called for.
Years ago my wife got into it with her mom's boyfriend. Dude was up in her face, calling her a every name you can think of, even shoved her once, and she finally had enough and and clocked him. Broke his glasses and knocked him on his ass. Little bitch called 911.
Bac0ni@reddit
Lmfao, you saying this feels like it’s a nuisance, lemme just grab my trusty crowbar!
See where that goes a bit wonky?
Puffification@reddit
I think you can sort of. Like, just don't push them down a flight of stairs or use a flying knee to the face. Something reasonable like a slap or small gut punch
Tensor3@reddit
So you're okay with knocking down old/infirm people and breaking their hip?
What if the person looks young/fit, but falls and hits their head?
Better just stick to responding to words in kind with words.
bourj@reddit
Are they harassing them? Because you sort of skim over that part, and the law isn't written to excuse someone from harassing people because they're old or can't walk.
Tensor3@reddit
It doesnt excuse harassment, but harassment doesnt warrant escalating the response
bourj@reddit
It does warrant it if the law says you can.
Puffification@reddit
Oh, no none of that is ok. It totally depends on the situation. I was being semi-jokey anyway. If someone was harassing someone in a very serious way though, grabbing their clothing, touching their body in a nonconsensual way, etc, I would be ok with giving them a lightish punch to the stomach (assuming the situation called for it and they seemed like they'd only get a minute of light pain or so). You have to really look firm sometimes to get someone to stop something like that. Remember harassment can be criminal and you're preventing them from escalating into an even more serious crime against that individual whom you're protecting
Tensor3@reddit
Well, physically grabbing/touching is assault. Excissive or extreme harassment can be seen legally as instigating it
regulator9000@reddit
You'll still go to jail
Zealousideal_Eye7686@reddit
Not a lawyer, but it depends (in America). Reasonable force requires objective and subjective fear of imminent harm. Reasonable force is whatever is needed to deal with the threat. An objective fear is a threat that a "reasonable person" would infer to exist. Subjective fear means you were acting out of fear (and not anger, retribution, etc). Depending on the harrasser's conduct, some force may be necessary if a reasonable person would believe there was an imminent threat. So shoving a harraser out of the way is almost certainly justified, as would be using punches/pepperspray/etc if it seemed like the harraser was going to get physical.
I mean you might still go to jail, but that's because you can go to jail without committing a crime.
i_notold@reddit
Body punches are where it's at. Less likely to leave a mark and fewer people can take a body shot than can take a head slap/punch.
No-Sort-1073@reddit
This is insane. This also gives me the oppourtnity to talk about the YouTuber that got shot for annoying some guy. The guy got acquitted which is also insane and should not be tolerated in a civilized society.
Tiny_Connection1507@reddit
Does this work if they're harassing you with phone calls? Cause there's one guy in particular who is harassing my wife. I'd like to clean his clock. I wish him well, I really do. But he needs to learn boundaries and learn not to harass women in general, let alone his ex/baby mama who's now married. Some people refuse to learn without being taught the hard way, and some days I'd like to be the one to teach him.
Dangerous-Silver6736@reddit
Block him
Jazzydiva615@reddit
Have you tried talking to him? Sit him down, offer compliments, thank him for taking time to talk and alert him that he's out of order and you would appreciate if he decreases the number of calls by half. Ask if he's getting enough sleep. Shake his hand and walk away!
Then if he continues to act with foolishness, set him straight with action!
Tiny_Connection1507@reddit
He's been a long term "guest of the State" most of the time we've been together. His short stints of freedom have been punctuated by harassment and my wife is very hesitant to involve the legal system even when it would definitely work in her favor, due to her own spotty history and lack of self-confidence. (We're working on all of that.) I know how to deal with reasonable people, in fact I'm fairly good with people skills. This guy is unreasonable at best, and at worst he's downright unstable. Peace is all I want most days, but sometimes you have to "walk softly and carry a big stick."
bradleymonroe@reddit
crazier idea - legalize free therapy so OP can get some.
Prestigious_Beat6310@reddit
Ummm... that is legal. 🤣Â
Festering-Fecal@reddit
Depending on what they are doing that legally can go either way.
Like if you were a woman and a big guy was messing with you legally you would be in your rights
Orangeshowergal@reddit
This is not correct
Zealousideal_Eye7686@reddit
It depends (in American law). You can use reasonable force when there's an objective and subjective fear of imminent harm. Objective fear is a reasonable person standard: how would others feel in your shoes (this "person" bassically doesn't make mistakes). Subjective fear is were you, the one who used force, actually scared (to prevent vigilante justice). Reasonable force is the amount of force required to deal with the situation. There's state-by-state variations like whether you have a duty to retreat, but that's the gist.
Depending on what the harassment is, force could very well be legal. "Beat up" is probably a stretch but you could probably hit them until they back off. The bigger the harasser is and the more overt their threats, the more likely a reasonable person would be fearful for their safety.
Obligatory I'm not a lawyer and this isn't legal advice.
Hopeful_Ad_7719@reddit
In plenty of places it can be legal'ish... but I wouldn't want to argue 'they had it coming' in court:Â https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_doctrine
gc3@reddit
All right, now who started this fight. 'he was harassing me"....' No he was harassing me! "
xa44@reddit
This post is harassment so I will be coming to your house to beat you
Own-Yam-69420@reddit
There are so many idiots out there that would abuse that and you better make sure you can fight if your going to start doing something like that
