"Unalive" is such a lame word to substitute for suicide/kill. "Flatline" is a much better option

The worst part of "unalive" isn't the censorship, it's that there are already 100 euphemisms for death: kicked the bucket, bit the bullet, bite the dust, met his maker, pushing daisies, bought the farm, belly up, toes up, dirt nap.
Salty_Map_9085@reddit
Do you think people had the same sentiment when each of those 100 were introduced
SorbetInteresting910@reddit
No because they don't sound visciously stupid
PrinceZukosHair@reddit
You’re telling me toes up and bought the farm aren’t stupid?
SorbetInteresting910@reddit
Ngl I skimmed the comment, yeah those are stupid. Not as stupid as unalive though, at least they don't mutilate the english language.
JuicyMaterwelon@reddit
"mutilate" and it's just adding an already existing prefix to an already existing verb in a "reasonable" manner
SorbetInteresting910@reddit
Yeah but it suuuuucks. It sounds like total shit. It's unpleasant to say and to hear.
JuicyMaterwelon@reddit
Sucks
PrinceZukosHair@reddit
Nah I agree unalive is worse. I do however disagree with the idea that people never have the same sentiment when they were introduced to these other phrases which do also sound stupid. People always hate new shit until it’s no longer new and people have accepted its place in society.

You only don’t think they sound stupid because they’ve been around for so long.
If kick the bucket was a brand new phrase that had never been used before that too would sound pretty stupid in the context of someone dying.
liltooclinical@reddit

Offed. Kirk Cobain offed himself. That one's been around longer than I have.
Or, you know, you could just stop being a little bitch about it and say what you mean. He killed himself. He blew his brains out. He sucked off a shotgun and created a new Jackson Pollock.
Delicious_Tip4401@reddit
Do y’all not realize that some peoples’ livelihoods are dependent upon websites not demonetizing them? Believe it or not, there’s a whole world outside of your tiny slice of lived experience.
RadioactiveSpiderCum@reddit
Ya, but what I'm saying is that we shouldn't let these big tech platforms dictate what language we are and aren't allowed to use or what topics are off limits. They are constraining the scope of human expression purely because it may end up making them slightly higher profits.
Creators should be able to make videos about suicide, or about war, or racism, or sexual assault, or queer issues, of horror stories, or whatever, without having to worry about the income that video generates being arbitrarily taken from them, because the video wasn't "advertiser friendly". Like you say, some people's livelihoods are dependent on not being demonetised. So they shouldn't be demonetised by an automated system for arbitrary bullshit reasons.
wellgolly@reddit
And honestly I think at least half of the reaction to "unalive" is how creepy and demeaning it is that it's escaped containment in that context.

Those don’t fit in the sentences that unalive is used in but ok
llort_tsoper@reddit
What's an example of a sentence that "unalive" would work in but the other euphemisms wouldn't.
xstrawb3rryxx@reddit
We need to use dumb substitutes to show just how stupid censorship is.
adam__nicholas@reddit
How stupid, and how contradictory to almost any purpose it’s implemented for. Look me in the eye and tell me how saying “mustache man unalived 11 million people” is the most respectful or tactful way for content creators to explain what happened.
xstrawb3rryxx@reddit
There is no respect where censorship is involved.
FrankScabopoliss@reddit
The worst part for me is that it doesn’t fucking make sense in a sentence. “Alive” isn’t a verb. A mother doesn’t “alive” someone, so you can’t “unalive” someone.
Alive is an adjective, so unalive would also be an adjective, or could be a noun, like undead.
So saying, he is now unalive works more for me than, he unalived himself.
And don’t get me started on the fact that I’ve started hearing younger kids saying it out loud, and not just seeing it online to escape censors.
BDmnygtaST@reddit
6 feet under” croaked
Can_I_Read@reddit
It was originally a substitution for suicide, not die in general. The notion of opting out of life is inherent in this new term “unalive.” I don’t see that in any of the options you provide.
RadioactiveSpiderCum@reddit
Biting the bullet isn't dying, but yeah.
enayjay_iv@reddit
No. It’s censorship. TikTok issue a few years ago and it stuck. Just say suicide.
GLUTINUSMAXIMUS@reddit
Bought the farm? BRB gotta read starship troopers
Shmolti@reddit
Dressing words up so to make them more "family friendly" is a part of the problem. Someone committing suicide should carry a lot of weight because it's a big deal.
We shouldn't be desensitizing ourselves when it comes to hard topics, those words carry heavy meaning for a reason.
interested_commenter@reddit
Trend was started by content creators trying to avoid algorithms and trolls trying to avoid censors. It's about being family friendly, it's about automated systems being good at tracking a word but bad at detecting euphemisms.
CoupleWest7523@reddit
It all started on TikTok, they have absolutely shit censoring for stuff it’s so stupid, literally any comment you make could be censored. But when someone else wants to make a porn video, it’s, TikTok moderation can’t get their head out of their ass
Rasty_lv@reddit
Without a joke, I really hate this stupid censorship. Why can't we call things in their real names? Killed, suicide, sexual assault. All of that censorship just softens the meaning of them and make it sound harmless..
Only acceptable censorship for death is pepsi lol. That one can stay.
Confused_AF_Help@reddit (OP)
It's not for social acceptance sake, it's to get past auto filters for non advertiser friendly content. It's all about money making.
ndstumme@reddit
And those filters exist because...
LunarCookie137@reddit
...suicide and such is viewed very negatively.
Companies don't want that negative viewpoint to trickle into them
Advertising and consumption of media are built on dopamine, and keeping people happy.
Reading about someone wanting to kill themselves isn't something you'd enjoy I assume, so if an advertisement is underneath that, there is a subconscious chance it'll influence the brand name. Both of the advertizer and platform displaying the content.
They exist not for our safety per say, although absolutely if you're sensitive to it, such a filter is a saviour. But it shouldn't be fully censored. So alternate ways to talk about it show up.
Alive is a positive word for most, so by adding 'un' to it, you let people know you mean the opposite without 'naming the demon'. Can help soften the topic.
And finally, search functions. If every post about suicide had the word suicide in it. It'd be easier to somehow construct a plan that might succeed, or worse, fail, but in a way that damages them more.
There are probably more or better reasons, but this is what I got.
ndstumme@reddit
So, it's social acceptance then.
JKilla1288@reddit
I think it's more forced financial acceptance.
ndstumme@reddit
Forced by what? Do you not see the circular logic here?
The companies want to craft a certain image. What could possibly be shaping the image they want to project?
CSGO_Office@reddit
Their corporate departments that decide that kind of thing?
Do you think they’re out here polling people?
LunarCookie137@reddit
Lol, I say that last sentence as if I told chatGPT to generate stuff. Nah, just typing, lol.
rand0m-nerd@reddit
it’s undesirable for your company name to be right next to a post about suicide or sexual assault
it’s a bad look for companies, or creates a negative cognitive association
ndstumme@reddit
So, it's social acceptance then.
ThePumpk1nMaster@reddit
Ironically, that’s been disproven. So even the influencers online using it are morons… which isn’t news, really.
ShortUsername01@reddit
Then stop allowing the Internet to be beholden to advertisers. If they were wrong about this, what else could they be wrong about?
anti_username_man@reddit
This argument doesn't even make sense. If it's about undesirable content, wouldn't the people in charge just adjust the algorithm to adapt to the new euphemisms?
you_wizard@reddit
They probably will eventually.
anti_username_man@reddit
I mean people have been using those euphemisms for years, if there was anything to the theory it would have been done long ago
beep41@reddit
I've noticed it trickling down into my friend groups, who are not trying to make money on social media.
Apparently words like "suicide" and "kill" are enough to trigger other people, so it's better to censor them for their sake. For whatever reason it goes beyond words like that too (ex. police = "pol!ce")
I'm pretty progressive, but having grown up on the internet on the early/mid 2000's has really made me bitter towards this kind of censoring.
TremboloneInjection@reddit
I swear all of this is dumb. If it triggers them it's their problem
That's what happens when all kids reach adulthood
enayjay_iv@reddit
Which is even worse. And we need to stop abiding to these corporations non sense
ThePumpk1nMaster@reddit
To take your question seriously it’s because of influencers fearing demonetisation… which has been disproven anyway. So everyone who does it is just a bit of a moron anyway
La-Scriba@reddit
Because it indicates that there might be discussion of things that advertisers don't want next to their brands.
rexman199@reddit
And why do I care about those advertisers?
NevGuy@reddit
Their algorithm won't promote your post and that's of vital importance to some people I guess.
rexman199@reddit
Fair enough but what happens when every video people don’t censor themselves? Would TikTok/ social media just go under because they can’t monetise anymore? Nope, they will have to adapt and I’d rather they be forced than them forcing us
GimmickNG@reddit
Not every video talks about unappealing topics or even uses swears, just like how your comment in a vacuum doesn't either. So TikTok et. al would still continue to run.
rexman199@reddit
Well maybe they should. I don’t think human behaviour should be controlled by corporations and advertisers fuck em
GimmickNG@reddit
People's behaviour will be controlled by platforms regardless of whether they censor themselves or get censored, so the only option where there is no censorship (either from oneself or externally) is to not use those platforms in the first place.
rexman199@reddit
Cool you should take that idea to r/normalideas and not on/r/crazyideas
Boxish_@reddit
The reason these rules exist in the first place was that it almost happened. At some point in the 2010s, advertisers started leaving youtube en masse for these reasons and youtube put the rules in place to try and get them back
rexman199@reddit
I know I was there when it happened, who will they advertise to when there are no users, users are more important than advertisers if you don't have users you don't have advertisers
smp501@reddit
Because we live in a dystopian world where people are automatically censored by algorithms when they use words the advertisers don’t like, so people created 1984-esque doublespeak to be able to communicate.
rexman199@reddit
Nah I’d rather get censored and demonetised than submit
DallasAckner@reddit
the double speak is an active rebelion against those systems and you'd rather just do it to prove a point? uh
rexman199@reddit
no ill just type murder and suicide visibility be damned they might stop me but they won't be able to control it if 90% of people don't bother with using double speak what will the social medias do? we made them what they are
La-Scriba@reddit
If 90% of people don't bother, the 10% will get 10x as much visibility. There are so many people who do not care and just want number go up
rexman199@reddit
They might, but it will also reduce the amount of content on the website, meaning people don't stick around on your site as long, like imagine if YouTube only showed you the 100 newest vids per day you might be interested in one or two but then you're off the site doing something else
This drop in user activity will directly affect the website as advertisers will pay even less
La-Scriba@reddit
You vastly underestimate the will of the masses, of teenagers no less, on an issue so small, and also the size of the masses. A lifetime of video is uploaded every day. There will always be something to recommend.
rexman199@reddit
Guys I don’t know why you come on crazy ideas when you wanna bring logic
GimmickNG@reddit
How is it an active rebellion when you're doing exactly what they want?
DallasAckner@reddit
Saying "unalive" is not what advertisers want and it actually goes directly against their main goal. They don't want people talking about heavy topics in general; the double speak is a way around that. The algorithms will get better and the doublespeak and users will have to evolve with it because the words that are currently used will get stuck down eventually.
Gravbar@reddit
and then in 5 years when advertisers don't like corn, unalive, pdfs etc. those will also get banned, followed by new stupid words to compensate.
DrG2390@reddit
I wonder what you’d call the document then…
La-Scriba@reddit
You shouldn't, but plenty of people do. Not coincidentally the most influential people among the masses
rexman199@reddit
well since this is r/crazyideas maybe we should consider crazy options to this censorship, time to make ai images of Burger King/ ronaldmcdonald taking it up the ass and post em to social media
usafcybercom@reddit
The language change only applies over at tiktok. Let's not change IRL vernacular to match that shit
xanthus12@reddit
I think YouTube does the same thing too. It's revolting.
La-Scriba@reddit
I'm not proposing we do, but people who use TikTok will adopt it IRL on however many layers of irony they like, and it diffuses to the rest of the population
JEXJJ@reddit
If people want to watch it, then they can suck it. They don't seem to mind advertising CSI
ChaseballBat@reddit
It's some dumb trend that started on TikTok because people didn't want to get their content removed or shadow hidden. Even though there is no evidence that is the case. Just viral stupidity.
Wyattbw@reddit
while i can’t personally attest to the platform this type of language started on, there absolutely is evidence that content mentioning “advertiser unfriendly content” absolutely does get, at bare minimum, throttled on plenty of platforms. also dismissively calling it a trend is kinda dismissive of how language and communication work and grow, but thats kinda a minor point
ChaseballBat@reddit
Yea but these are comments. It's not like comments are getting advertising.
Wyattbw@reddit
thats not how censorship for advertising purposes works though. reddit (or just about any other platform), as a business, has a huge interest in creating an environment that advertisers are willing to pay to advertise on. this is often done in large part by selectively boosting or throttling things that they want or don’t want potential advertisers to see. as a heavily simplified example, if a thread is idolizing mass murders and serial killers then reddit might choose to reduce the number of people that thread gets recommended to. because if a potential advertiser hears that “reddit allows people to idolize serial killers on their platform” then it is likely they might not choose to pay to advertise on the platform
ChaseballBat@reddit
Yeah but that doesn't happen to comments. Nor was reddit the origin of it. It was from video content creators who stopped, then the commenters panicked and thought their comments would be removed too, so they self censored. There is no indication that saying killed themselves is censored, unless it's a weird niche subreddit specific rule.
Wyattbw@reddit
this censorship absolutely does happen to comments, have you notice the uptick in comments being collapsed by default? it is more notable on whole posts yes, but i wasn’t even speaking about comments in particular. also, im not saying reddit is the origin of this type of speak (it absolutely isn’t)
C-C-X-V-I@reddit
There have been no changes for me. It's probably the app you're using
arealhumannotabot@reddit
It’s not a trend. They are straight up rules on platforms for the sake of advertisers
They don’t really like the idea of their products being marketed on videos about suicide or whatever
ChaseballBat@reddit
Where are these rules for commentors?
arealhumannotabot@reddit
Huh? Honestly not sure what you’re referring to. On Reddit?
ChaseballBat@reddit
Where? Why isn't my comment removed for saying "Killed themselves"
arealhumannotabot@reddit
You still haven’t specified where. On Reddit?
There are different possible reasons. The advertisers may not be so concerned with the comments. The video content itself is associated with advertising and content creators are often paid to do promotional spots. So they are working directly with advertisers to sell product.
Just because you don’t see a comment removed doesn’t mean a lot
ChaseballBat@reddit
I've literally never had a comment removed for saying the words "killed themselves"
I've been on this site for over a decade.
arealhumannotabot@reddit
OK well dude, Reddit doesn’t have that same moderation. That’s why.
ChaseballBat@reddit

rednax1206@reddit

RedditorNamedEww@reddit
Can you tell me what is wrong with unalive? I genuinely don’t know why people hate it so much, I feel like replacing dead/killed with unalive is as straightforward and natural as a new word could possibly be. Someone who’s been learning English for a month or two would in all likelihood understand it easily. I’m surprised it wasn’t already a word, I mean we’ve had undead for a while lol
ItzK3ky@reddit
I mean "unalive" is primarily used to soften it up for social media, not for use in gang life
rexman199@reddit

I don’t see the problem. Semantically it’s a very objective way to say ‘kill’. MarkitTwain2@reddit
I was taught during a suicide prevention class that it's better to just use the word as it is. By using euphemisms, you are actually making it harder for people ideating suicide to speak up, and it makes it feel like something shameful or something to hide. They did also say to avoid making it seem incriminating like saying "committed" because it makes it sound like a crime (it literally was in the past). We already have great words like "took their own lives" so no need to create several variations.

A big part of why it's so commonly Not said specifically with YouTube videos is because YouTube flags the word Suicide in videos if it is said, usually it's only within the first minute, but any a hole can report a video.if someone says it at any point.
It's very often a, person says it because they will get demonetized if they say it in a video.

I thought it was a joke reference to 1984 where they reduce the dictionary in order to control people. They’d add “un-“ to things and then remove any alternative words. Pretty sure “unalive” was also a word they used in the book?
Maybe I’m giving people too much credit.
Lapidot-Wav@reddit
All of the words people use to substitute words annoy the piss out of me and make me feel like people are insincere in whatever they are speaking about. I know some people say they’re banned words, they aren’t. It’s usually a way to get around demonetization and if you care about that more than you care about telling me someone committed suicide, was raped or killed then I want you to fuck off. These topics deserve raw honesty and truth to be spread not to be turned comical.
BeeEater100@reddit

tomayto_potayto@reddit
Unalive is supposed to sound stupid. It's not meant to actually be an equivalent replacement for the words kill/die etc, it's supposed to bring attention to how ridiculous it is to blanket censor that word.
TickdoffTank0315@reddit
Asystole (the proverbial "flatline") is often not really flat. There is often a little electrical activity, maybe a very subtle waveform. The completely static flat line you typically see on film is because the ekg is not actually hooked up to anything (understandably).
And a flatline is possibly reversible. The chances are not good, but it does happen. I've had more than a few patients in asystole that we got back.
Few_Peak_9966@reddit
The inaccuracy and subdued connection of the term is the purpose to get around automated censors. Clarity and sounding cool are actively avoided.
