What did you drive in high school?

Spotted this classic in the wild on Saturday and it had my wife and I talking about our high school beaters. What did you drive?

I had a 1983 Mercury Capri. It was absurd. It had an 8 track player, which I plugged a tape adapter into, and then put a tape-to-cd adapter into that, and had an external cd player sitting in the console. All so I could listen to my favorite songs skipping while I drove on terrible old factory speakers.
My stepdad also did work on it. Whenever I stopped at red lights the engine would just die so a friend would jump out to spray starter fluid under the hood so I could start again and go. He also messed up some wiring so to crank the car I had to slide the heater slider thing instead of using the key ignition.
Eventually a “friend” of mine stole the tires and the battery when I had to leave it overnight at work when it wouldn’t start. I switched to a blue Escort shortly after.

If we were lucky to get the car from my parents it was a 1993 Chevy cavalier. My first vehicle that I bought was a 1985 Camaro IROC-Z which didnt last me long.

kmill0202@reddit
My brother had an 87 IROC. Fire engine red, and he got it for a steal because someone had keyed "fuck you" in huge letters on the hood. $1500 in 2001 for that car was a hell of a deal because it was really clean and smooth other than that. He was able to do a little paint correction on his own, and you could barely see the scratches after that. Dummy went and wrecked it within a year though, because that's what he does. He probably went through about 10-12 cars in his late teens/early 20s because he drove carelessly and didn't take care of them.
Blackbird136@reddit
Also a 93 Cavalier here but mine was a WAGON! 🔥🔥

Had a GMC Sierra I totaled (it was my dad’s old truck that had no tread on the tires). Then I got my bitch’n 82 Trans-Am (this was in 1993).

My sister had an 86 Cavalier. Good times.
Past-Direction9145@reddit
I got a 1986 cavalier from my parents. 4 speed manual and no ac. No ps. No power to speak of. Got me hooked on manuals tho had them all my life and still drive one to this day. 2002 Audi s6 4.2 v8 with a 6 speed manual conversion and done professionally, legit. No check engine light passes smog. All stock parts imported from Europe.
got the Audi in 2018. So I went from 1986 cavalier to 2002 Audi s6 in 30 years. Had about a dozen cars along the way. Prolly get buried in this one if it don’t get into an accident. There ain’t a goddamn single part made of rubber or plastic that is stock on that car. Every belt every hose, every seal, every bearing, nothing stock remains only way the car could be reliable and have no leaks. AC blows cold, it’s just daily driver v8 station wagon from hell fun any time.
JamesH_670@reddit
Mine was a 94 Chevy Cavalier (also my parents’ car, though I made the lease payments). It was a demo model. By the time I finally got rid of it (around ‘03 or ‘04) the AC was long dead and the engine was leaking fuel from somewhere. At that point, I was taking the public transit and only took the car when I was late and desperately needed to get somewhere on time.

I took so much pride in this car because of how hard my late mama worked to buy it. I kept it clean and everything.
She, a CNA at the time, worked two jobs so that I wouldn't have to work during high school. We lived in the ghetto, were poor and we did struggle, but the car lot worked with her paying the note. She wanted me to focus on my education, which is why I didn't work during school, only during summers. I wanted to do more for her bc my late mama was the absolute best. Later in life, I got to take care of her until she died.
Anyhow...

First ride was a ‘93 Buick Skylark in this maroonish color, in 1997.
LooseMoralSwurkey@reddit
I said "Buick Skylark" in Marisa Tomei's voice in my head.
Repulsive_Glove6085@reddit
Probably the only redeeming quality about that car was her saying it in a movie.
Psycho-City5150@reddit
Depends on the year. I inherited my grandfather 1968 Buick Skylark Custom. Body by Fisher! Seats were awesome. They werent silk but they damn sure felt like it. Some really high thread count. 350 with a rochester quadrajet and a gutless 2 speed automatic transmission and a slow rear end that maybe was good for pulling a boat but certainly not good for drag racing.
It was a nice car and I wanted to swap out the drive train and turn it into a GS 350 clone .. but .. well .. shit happens, especially when a woman is invovled.
Repulsive_Glove6085@reddit
The 93 model was nothing to write home about. It had this odd point jutting out in the middle of the front bumper for no reason, you can see it in the pic. We called it The Impaler.
Psycho-City5150@reddit
Those were pretty rare on the road in private hands but they did have a large amount of fleet sales to rental car agencies. I remember I rented one once. It was an OK car back then.

My aunt drove one of those in the early-90s. She used to pick my sister and I up in it whenever she babysat us. Even less than 5 years after coming out those cars were already falling apart.
werdnurd@reddit
Which is about the time my sister bought it, limped it along for a couple years, and then handed it down to me for its last six months. What did I replace it with? An 89 Ford Escort. All I needed was an Omni to complete the crapmobile triumvirate!
fuzzylilbunnies@reddit

I had a grey one. My friend had a broken down '78 dodge Omni in his back yard. I ended up using about half the body panels from it to repair my '87 Plymouth. Had at least 4 minor accidents that I did the repairs myself, it was 3 color by the time I scrapped it.
justredditinit@reddit
I owned one of those Plymouth/Mitsubishi abominations... Black and gold. Went to install a cheap speaker and when I removed the rear seat, I found an entire shattered rear window under the seat. Looks like the broke it in the factory and didn't even clean it out. Mine had a Mitsubishi steering wheel and a walled of turbo... Lasted 30 days and engine blew up while picking up my paycheck

A brutally used 1983 Ford F-150. Reminds me of a recent post that popped up in my feed on r/raisedbynarcissists, which has really just turned into a sub where disaffected teens and kids in their 20s complain about their very normal parents. The post was a diatribe about the OP’s (who was 19) allegedly narcissistic mother, who refused to give him her old car when she “upgraded”, instead choosing to trade it in for the cash value.
I commented with some real life advice about how it’s always been normal to be broke in your 20s if you don’t have rich parents, and that not getting a free car from your parents isn’t a reflection of their alleged narcissism.

It's hard for me to imagine people driving in high school. Where I live, you can get your learner's permit at 16, but I got mine in my early twenties because I didn't need it before that. Very few drove to school and those that did were the rich ones. So, in high school I rode my bike and took public transit.

A dark green dodge neon. My brother used to say it’s so small that you drive with your “knee on” the dash. The heat didn’t work so I had to drive with a blanket in the freezing cold Michigan winter. It also made this horrible whining sound every time it rained, which was so embarrassing that I would slouch down at every red light so no one could see me. Aaaah, but I bought it myself, so I loved that car.

The car I have now (2015 Chevy Sonic) is all right, but it has modern inconveniences that I loathe and can't get rid of, and the gas mileage isn't as good -- the Spectrum's was 35 miles to the gallon, while the Sonic is 27). It does have AC, though, which the Spectrum didn't.

1992 Olds Cutlass, NOT the "Ciera!"
Kept it immaculate. Those were good little cars with the 3.1 V6. Well built, like it was a robust car.
Had a Clarion head unit at first, later an Alpine with an iPod hookup that was so sick. Made a little hole in the back of the glove box and had my 20GB iPod in there. Also had upgraded speakers, added tweeters, and had 2 Toby 10" subs in the back in a giant bandpass box. Needed only 100 watts but sounded like 1000 due to the box design. Those were the coveted speakers back in the day in Fort Worth, TX.
It met its demise when I was on my way to campus in college in some highway traffic and I got rear-ended by a frist gen Rav4. The whole front of the Rav4 was pretty much gone, and my car looked generally fine, but of course it did sustain a lot of damage.
It was a hard hit - like the 6x9 speakers I had in the back dash were actually thrust out of the holes to the front of the car, and they were installed correctly/screwed-in securely into the factory openings.
I probably should have gotten checked out after that one, but I actually still went to school that day. I think I borrowed one of my parents cars or my younger sister's.

I inherited our old family car, the legendary 1986 Nissan Datsun (the car had both logos on it; it may have been a transition period where they were shifting to using Nissan from Datsun) Maxima station wagon. It had a sky window and it talked, too! (Like, “Key is in ignition,” and “Fasten your seatbelt.”)
I loved that car to death. When I was a little kid, we took this car on a cross-continental road trip from Ohio to California and back, stopping by awesome sites such as the St. Louis arch, Four Corners, Las Vegas, the Meteor Crater, Petrified Forest, Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde National Park, Zion National Park, Redwood Forest National Park, etc. The car didn’t complain once!
By the time I got my driver’s license, the car was a bit rusty but still haven’t had a single problem. She was an old reliable steed. Technically it was my sister’s car, but she was the cool kid who was ashamed of the car and refused to drive it (she drove my parents’ newer car instead,) it became mine and I was over the moon!
One very cold winter morning, the car wouldn’t start. We took it to auto repair shop, and it was a really minor problem that could very easily be repaired. But the repair cost was way over the car’s value at that point, so my dad decided to let go of the car, much to my sorrow. That car and I had so many awesome adventures and memories together.
I still wish we’d kept that car. It will be my special car forever.

I bought, repaired, and sold a few cars throughout high school, so I got to have a few cool cars.
My first was a lifted 1985 Chevy shortbed 4x4 pickup, then I had a 1995 lifted Chevy Silverado 4x4. I sold both of those and got a 1997 Z28 Camaro 6-speed and was also able to build a 1998 lifted Chevy Silverado extended cab shortbed 4x4 truck. The first '85 truck and my '98 truck were both built from a bare chassis using parts from several other wrecked trucks. The finished vehicles were very nice though.
This isn't a foto of my exact car, but this is the same year, same color, and same wheels.

Loved that little zoomy go cart of a ride. It had a tape deck and the previous owner added a custom wing. Otherwise it was as low end as the come. She did even had a right side mirror, you know, outside the car. And despite being a manual transmission, it didn't have a tachometer to indicate rmp. I'd never driven a straight shift before I was getting her, so I learned to drive a stick shift by sound and feel rather than watching a gauge. Lost her to disability, really. I HAD THIS POS! (Plymouth Horizon) The only good thing I can say about that car is that it prepared me to handle all manner of roadside emergencies, learn to survive being stranded, and:
Drive completely without brakes (including emergency) on no less than 3 occasions.
Drive w/ an engine that would just turn off & on as you rolled down the road (distributor on those cars were crap.)
Handles that snapped off at random, making my 4-door a 1-door.

'94 Mercury Sable station wagon in forest green.
Affectionately named "The Green Machine."
This car proved to be kind of a disaster, but dealign with those disasters taught me how to handle roadside breakdowns well.
I had head gaskets blow twice on that care (this basically disables the car). I had the AC die on it so I wound up doing "Four-down AC" (ie., drive fast with the windows down). I had coolant leaks that left me stranded. The last death spasm of the car was when its transmission gave out. (This happened b/c of a design flaw where the 3.8L engine of the Mercury model did not mesh well with the Ford transmission that was only really designed for a 3.0L engine.)
That said, I became proficient at loading a car onto a U-Haul tow rig, and driving both across the country until I could drop it at a service station where I lived (thereby avoiding any "Doc Hollywood" style situations).
The car survived about 8 years before its various mechanical deficiencies killed it.

Mine was a 92 sunbird. It was red. My older sister, to this day, talks about how unfair it was that I got the little red car and she had to drive the Chevy Astro van, which required her to keep a foot on the gas and a foot on the brake at stoplights so it wouldn't die.

I was lucky enough to have a job, and be a farm kid and one summer I got to keep part of the money I made selling sweet corn to stores around my area. I bought a 1991 Chevy Z71 pickup that looked just like the one in this picture in 1998 for 8,500$ cash. It already had 180k miles on it and when I sold it 6 years later it had 250k. It was a two-seater, but one of my mates used to ride in the boot/trunk on occasion when there were two who both needed a lift. Usually late at night and well away from main roads. The gas strut on the rear door was broken, so I’d have to hold it up while he was getting in and out. I had a 1996 Ford Contour with a manual transmission and manual windows - it was also beige. My dad worked for Ford and they leased it "for their convenience" but I got to drive my little euro trash Ford global economy car for my last 2 years of school. Everybody else had mustangs but I drove the stealth car.
One of my friend's mom's actually had a Dodge Stealth so I didn't really literally have the stealth car.

1986 Pontiac Fiero GT that a family friend had a blown clutch and was collecting dust and garbage in their garage for free. Replaced the clutch, and engine would run away when started. After dumping 2500 of my money into my father armed with Chiltons "fixes" , he finally allowed me to take it to mechanic I knew. Turned out to being a rusted egr tub, and $300 in parts and labor. It's a sore spot to this day.

Otherwise they drive sunfires.
A Topaz for me. I had it for about 10k miles then the rod started to knock at 150k. I was always scared to drive it more than 55. My parents would never let me leave within a 5 mile radius as they feared hitting above 55 would blow the motor.

I guess I will answer this since it’s not any of my security questions on a website for I forgotten password….
I drove a 1990 Chevrolet S-10 pickup. V6, five speed manual, flaking paint. Unfortunately that year they had issues with paint adhesion and there was a recall, but my dad purchased it just after the recall window expired… so I was left to use spray paint and touchup paint to keep it looking somewhat decent. Nonetheless it was fun, spirited enough that I could drop the clutch and do a small burnout…. And despite no air-conditioning it was alright for a first time car.
I don’t discuss the fact that my brother got a 1989 turbo Trans Am Indy 500 pace car as his second high school car… to be fair it was a bit rough when they got it but man that thing could haul ass. Plus it was just him and my father, as I had gone off to college…. It would run a 12 second 1/4 mile at the dragstrip, back when 12 seconds was really quick (2002)…. I mean, it still is, but there are lots of performance cars now doing 10s and 11s. That Trans Am had the exact same engine as the famous Buick grand national/GNX, but with a little bit bigger turbo.

I didn't get my own car until I graduated, but when I got my license, early '97, I drove my Dad's 1985 Dodge Colt whenever he was out of town, which was a lot at that point, until I totalled it about 3 months later. Really, who starts to turn onto a side street and then just stops for no reason? If he'd finished making his turn like a normal person I'd never have rear-ended him.

1987 Oldsmobile Delta 88, basically this but in Black.
It had one door that worked from the outside (driver), and one window that worked at all(passenger), and a loose part in a pulley or something that made it rattle at idle.
It was on its second motor and had been driven over 200k miles before I got it so the screws had started to vibrate themselves out of the dash and would randomly drop out into the passenger wheel well.

Ran it till I burned through two radiators, and the transmission started to leave the chat. Then a beat to shit exterior, 90 Celica GT-S manual. It looked like shit with half the passenger side being chunky bondo, and I did not treat her well, but still that car to 300,000 miles before it needed real work, and for the $1000 I paid for it, working at McDonald's and a cabinet factory, it did it's job and then some, and made it to the lot (barely) to be traded as scrap toward my fucking Ford Ranger.

89 Plymouth voyager with the wood panels that my mom’s friend gave me instead of junking it. It couldn’t go over 50mph without shaking like the wheels were gonna fall off, and only lasted 4 months, the last two of senior year and the first two of summer. I’d leave it unlocked so my friends could smoke in there in the senior parking lot, which earned it the nickname ‘dank tank’. My favorite part was the old school ignition, the kind where the key just literally unlocks the ignition like a door, and you had the option of just never locking it, just turning it on and off like a opening a door you never lock. This was 2003, so none of my friends knew that was even a thing. I’d get us up to 50 and shakin on the highway and then pop it into neutral and turn the car off, then I’d throw the keys past everyone and into the very back trunk area. Some kids legit thought they were gonna die, it was kinda dark sometimes but usually just funny. Then I’d just turn the ignition back on and keep driving like nothing happened.
