No its kinda true. I love to play music and at some point it dawned on me that I only played while drinking. Theres only so much you can accomplish in that state. It’s literally not true. The post states we are losing art because of it. We are not. It’s not that deep. People have drank and made great art, people have been sober and made great art. Loss of art is not due to “self medicating w/weed and booze”. Art is lost primarily due to socioeconomic conditions. The post is rank with class propaganda. Ok man. Lets agree to disagree. You bring up good points. All i know is that I started playing music ciz I love it. Then u got caught up into playing while drinking and it dawned on me that to get better. You have to play sober. That's all am saying.

And I resent the idea that art is only good under the influence of drugs and booze. How dull.
forget music and art, generational reduction in alcohol consumption mirrors the loneliness epidemic, being solitary literally shrinks your brain, your better off having a beer or 2 a week then staying home on a Friday
I think the lack of boredom and constant stimulation and instant gratification are bigger killers to creativity than anything else and this goes across the board for every generation.
As south park said, “…when you’re bored that you should be learning some new skill or discovering some new science or being creative.” Of course they were talking about smoking weed taking the place of boredom but the notion stands I think.
People don’t just got take a shit and think for a while anymore.. After you’ve read that same crinkled magazine 27 times over, you finally just sit, shit, and think about stuff and have great ideas emerge seemingly out of the blue!
I see the opposite in my 2007 and 2011 kids. It might just be that some of it comes down to personality too. My 2011 kid will play video games and get in their phone but they would much rather be playing an instrument than be on a screen.
Some of the best creative ideas I ever had was when I used to take the train to work before the iPhone was a thing. I'd just sit and watch people, wonder about things, contemplate life, come up with weird ideas and theories in my boredom, and every once in a while hit an enticing spark of genuine creativity.
"See, I think drugs have done some good things for us, I really do. And if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favor. Go home tonight and take all your albums, all your tapes, and all your CDs and burn 'em. Cause you know what? The musicians who've made all that great music. That's enhanced your lives throughout the years? Real fucking high on drugs."
Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Heres Tom with the Weather.
People don't want to use their imagination anymore they want AI to do it for them and see absolutely nothing wrong with that. Not to mention the obsession with nostalgia has creativity in a chokehold. It's OK to move on and come up with new ideas. Not everything needs a prequel, sequel, reboot. Not everything needs to be explained or analyzed. People have forgotten how to simply enjoy media.
Not true. Half of high school kids smoked weed in late 1970s. It was like 40% in 1997 (picked that year as illustraive of Xennials).
The rate is fairly low at moment (20%) but got close to a third in 2020. Now this is self-reporting surveys. Who knows if rate was actually higher when it could cost you your freedom.
The percent of population who smokes has changed upwards because those 70s seniors are now retirees! The folks who were in highschool in 60s before weed “took off” are dying off.
Oh man could you imagine if Nirvana came to be in 2025…? Drugs, smoking cigarettes, drinking… MTV unplugged would have so many trigger warnings I doubt any network or streaming service would even air it..
It’s not the drugs or smoking or drinking onto itself, it’s the crazy overacting and group mob like mentality about everything and anything that people do and what people say that blows my mind.. Another example, Dave Chappell was never controversial in the 90’s and 2000’s he didn’t change an ounce, society changed or at least the powers to be would have you think it did….
Too many people up tight and polarizing… look at Reddit, if you say something that doesn’t fit you get downvoted into oblivion or booted from the sub
Yes, I came here to say this. It’s not the musicians. It’s corporate. We need to be better than our parents, recognize what’s happening and NOT blame the kids.
We’re losing art and music to algorithms and lack of decent pay for art and artists. People aren’t going to share their work when it gets scraped for AI slop.

It's way harder these days to find quality and unique art because almost anyone can produce some bullshit and put it out in the world.
I was just thinking about this. Being a musician also helped you get ladies and I feel like that is not the same as before. Put bluntly I don't think they got laid like they use to with the diminishing of live performance in bars. I think that is lowering the incentive to be a musician.
I personally feel the current youngins are crazy uptight. It's like relax. Laugh at yourself a little. Definitely lacking that who gives a fuck attitude.

What do you mean?! Weed is becoming legal in more places, booze is still a statistical nightmare.
If anything is killing music, it’s the industry itself. Signing bad artists, over priced shows, commercialization, I could go on and on. The acts that become huge these days are usually tiktok-viral initially, regardless of talent or quality. Sounds getting reused and spread around. The industry sees this as “well it’s what the people want” and push it further.
Incredible music is still being made every day, it’s just not as accessible due to record labels clogging up the airwaves with trash. You have to dig for it, but it’s there.
Your fully brainrotted and should read history, particularly economic history, also what advancements in tech do for existing power structures. You’re focusing on individual responsibility vs systemic power. Hint systemic wins.

Eh, I used to think that's what it is. But as an mature musician, I'll tell you that I actually think it's other stuff. It's that playing instruments isn't cool anymore, so fewer kids spend every moment of their you g lives trying to be the best at it. It's that it's so easy to make music with our current tech that people aren't growing in their talent by dealing with challenges. Plenty of factors from changes to the industry itself, too.
This is such a boomer take. 🙄 There’s plenty of good music nowadays. You have access to the entirety of the internet in your pocket at all times, stop being lazy and give something besides top 40 radio a listen.
When I was 33 NPR had this piece about how "most" people stop listening to new music around the age of 34. I laughed my ass off at that, because I was listening to NPR on my commute and not the radio.
Christ I hope I never get this old (I'm probably older than OP, but I'm not so old to believe this kind of tripe). You want to talk about what kills creativity? Having to monetize every fucking part of your life because just having a hobby you're bad at is a "waste of time".
We don't allow for, or encourage failure, which is the best teacher a person can get, if they pay attention the lessons being taught.
People are self-medicating, at all ages, more than ever.
Lastly there's no good point that will ever be made with a washed meme format set in Impact.
Why do you think everyone on this sub has kids? And how is this hate??? Get a grip, it's a snarky joke about kids today not being as into drugs as we were. It's not an actual criticism. I think we're all actually okay with kids not being on drugs.
Also, everything to the youth is “cringe”. Any feelings, emotions, being obnoxious, being too much, all the things that make good art are, “cringe”. So how can they possibly make anything g interesting if they’re stuck in that mindset?
I had a realization this morning, not sure if I’m right about it but: in the 90s, our brand of “that’s cringe” was sneering at anything that seemed too mainstream or corporate. The modern version of cringe is anything that’s too individual.
I actually find todays kids more willing to be sincere than our generation was at that age. Folks were aggressively "too cool for school" in the 90s. Todays kids will at least talk about their mental health and fears for example.
Meh, up through the late 90s our generation called anything we perceived as uncool "gay". If anything, cringe is an improvement since it does not place a negative connotation on homosexuality. They will have their turn learning to not give a fuck when appropriate.
Nah, man. The problem is that you can write a song with zero heart by pushing a button, slap a pretty face in front of it with a boring, soulless voice, pay them all peanuts for it and make tons of profit.
The problem isn't that there aren't artists, the problem is that the music industry isn't looking for them anymore.
Yes but there's more nuance to it. Basically it comes down to quantization. Music used to be recorded on tape. That meant whatever sound went into the recording device was used as the recording. You heard imperfections, studio noise, and sometimes the band was even off beat a little. That's what added human elements to the music. That's what made you feel a kinship with the artist.
Now you can't record on tape anymore unless you do it at home with vintage equipment. Everything is done via DAW (digital audio workspaces like protools).
The problem isn't that the DAWs are bad, it's that they're too good at what they do. Everything is clipped to a measure and it's all perfectly quantized (made to be on beat and in sync). It's polished with the perfect amount of reverb and echo and shine. Every instrument shines through the mix right where it's supposed to be. Every vocal mix is perfectly tweaked.
The songs have no inspiration because they're going for success. They're already performing on Instagram and TikTok before they've ever had a practice in a basement.
Same with actors of course. Now it's about followers and social media presence over actual experience. Artists no longer grind, they want a hit from the start or they do something else
I think some of the best music made was when the artist was high, drunk or coming off a bender.
Some of Metallica and Megadeth's material was when they were high.
the problem is actually that music is better than it’s ever been but our generation is still so trained to commercial radio, whatever they’re shilling on Spotify etc and not open to new genres that you’re missing it. listen to college radio, visit your local record stores, go to some shows. y’all are so LAME 😂
This might be a small part of it, but I would say it's tech keeping talent hidden. Algorithms weren't a thing back then and are almost impossible to compete with. All the garbage floats to the top instead of the good stuff. Add to that no talent "beats" and auto tune bullshit. Every now and then I'll come across something new that's really good, but it's rare.
I dont like the fact that a lot of the music I hear these days is not like what I used to listen to. lol. There was one group who was advertising shorts and a lot of 90s and early 2ks clips to play on my nostalgia. But he actually he some pretty good music. Canadian Nosferatu I think they're called.
If you're anything like every other old person in existence, you're never going to enjoy the music young folks make anyway, and are going to bitch about how bad it is no matter what. So you can save yourself.some energy and stop worrying about this.

The problem isn't that there aren't artists, the problem is that the music industry isn't looking for them anymore.
incredibleninja@reddit

CompromisedToolchain@reddit
They want someone smart enough to play ball but not smart enough to buck. They want sexy conflict with implied violence, but safe and predictable.
freelight0@reddit
This is a real problem but it isn't a new problem.
Hairy-Stock8905@reddit
This. Also that live nation is killing small venues everywhere that fostered up and coming artists.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
Hmmm I think there is more weed usage today then back in our day.
shadowlarx@reddit
Honestly, that’s a very valid point.
Sunshineal@reddit
I think some of the best music made was when the artist was high, drunk or coming off a bender. Some of Metallica and Megadeth's material was when they were high.
_buffy_summers@reddit
When a musician finds religion, they lose their talent.
culturebarren@reddit
The death of the Humanities in favor of STEM is probably a contributing factor too
DirtRight9309@reddit
the problem is actually that music is better than it’s ever been but our generation is still so trained to commercial radio, whatever they’re shilling on Spotify etc and not open to new genres that you’re missing it. listen to college radio, visit your local record stores, go to some shows. y’all are so LAME 😂
ButterscotchGreen734@reddit
My kids are waaaaaay better behaved than I was 😂 we were all doing a lot of drugs in the 90’s.
BedtimeGenerator@reddit
Im doing my part.
Clamstradamus@reddit
Tbh, self medicating with weed is the worst thing I ever did to myself
Same-Photograph1926@reddit
This might be a small part of it, but I would say it's tech keeping talent hidden. Algorithms weren't a thing back then and are almost impossible to compete with. All the garbage floats to the top instead of the good stuff. Add to that no talent "beats" and auto tune bullshit. Every now and then I'll come across something new that's really good, but it's rare.

How to be a good musician:
Step 1 - never be sober again ever.
Uhh_JustADude@reddit
Step 0: be talented, bored, and never give a damn whom you disappoint in your life (unquestionable free spirit)
Step 0.5: Take life even less seriously
Uhh_JustADude@reddit
That’s a double-edged sword.
RIP Layne Staley, Scott Weiland, Shannon Hoon, Kurt Cobain (contributing factor), Chris Farley, Amy Winehouse, and so many more.

Acid. They stopped taking acid.

And lsd and cocaine!

I did LSD before any other drug, it was ALWAYS around in the early 90s for some reason...
ChroniclesOfSarnia@reddit
Yeah, I still do though and I am creating new music all the time
I'd call that a win!
Mountain-Fox-2123@reddit
There are plenty of good music made today, and there where plenty of bad music made in the past.
mytodaythrowaway@reddit
You have to hear this new protest band!
They're called 'Meh against the machine '.
AlreadyFifty@reddit
I can’t remember his name, but a comic once said:
I don’t do drugs and I don’t condone their use. HOWEVER… it hasn’t hurt my record collection.
Sharpshooter188@reddit
I dont like the fact that a lot of the music I hear these days is not like what I used to listen to. lol. There was one group who was advertising shorts and a lot of 90s and early 2ks clips to play on my nostalgia. But he actually he some pretty good music. Canadian Nosferatu I think they're called.
incognino123@reddit
Hard disagree, they're drinking less alcohol but way more of everything else
Also music is way better now than the abomination that was the early 2000s
Livid_Parsnip6190@reddit
If you're anything like every other old person in existence, you're never going to enjoy the music young folks make anyway, and are going to bitch about how bad it is no matter what. So you can save yourself.some energy and stop worrying about this.
Daysaved@reddit
Hate you tell you drug use in America is kinda down. You just keep going to the places you didn't like 5 years ago.

The best musicians are caked out of their minds. They sober up and suck. See Metallica.
DJMagicHandz@reddit
There's plenty of good music out there...

I'd go a step further and say Hollywood was better when everyone was on coke.
ReggaeForPresident@reddit
RHCP had an obvious change in quality when they all went sober. They needed to, but damn it was noticeable.

Every RCHP song since 1999: “Blah blah California, blah blah blah heroin…Californiaaah”

Eh. As long as there are angsty teenagers, music will be alive and well. Whether it's good music is up to the listeners.
Petraaki@reddit
I know some pretty awesome kid artists. I think social media is messing up the younger generation a million times more than drugs and alcohol would
Allaplgy@reddit
Y'all need to meet some cooler kids. And remember that if nobody is being lame, there is nothing to rebel against and be cool.
jessek@reddit
Young people definitely still use weed, judging by the my friends' teenagers
