Upgrade from Ryzen 3800X to 5700X3D worth it?

I'm talking purely about Gaming Performance here.
I'm not yet ready to upgrade to AM5 and the logical upgrade on my X570 mainboard would be the 5800X3D, however the CPU seems to be sold out everyhwere? The next best thing would be the 5700X3D, however I don't know if the performance upgrade is worth it.
Someone here who has any advice?
LemonOwl_@reddit
A 5700X3D is 2/3 the price of an am5 cpu+mobo+ram combo that beats it in performance. I wouldn't buy that.
pantsyman@reddit
Op didn’t state where they are from not everyone is from the US, in the EU they are still way cheaper for example.
LemonOwl_@reddit
True
RoawrOnMeRengar@reddit
Did that last year, got the 5700X3D for 210€, extremely worth it.
Yellowtoblerone@reddit
If you don't care about multiplayer and 1% lows yes. There's no chance we can say you can skip am5 just with a 5700x3d
911NationalTragedy@reddit
And a kid with 60 fps will melt you in multiplayer games. It aint that serious.
Yellowtoblerone@reddit
Then why bother upgrade from 3800x. It ain't that serious, just get a ps4
Come on man nobody wants to stutter and zen5 x3ds increases 1% to have smooth single player performance, it's not just multi
911NationalTragedy@reddit
Yea ofc nobody wants to stutter more. But 60 fps console kid will melt your face while youre on your 10000$ rig. Or some third world country kid with his Dell Generic Mouse GTX 750ti can't stop killing you every round in Valorant, CSGO. It's not that serious. Your consumerist brain is talking: "let me justify my purchase by recommending the same thing to others" "a purchase that didn't improve my KDA at all btw".
ohhoodsballs@reddit
Literally did it the other day and some games (total war) had a 60% increase in loading and performance in was gobsmacked.
Other games feel way smoother. Fantastic upgrade I honestly was expecting to not notice anything
YSvetta@reddit
Extremely worth it especially is cpu heavy games. I've done something similar myself and it's a night and day difference in mhrise, ZZZ, cyberpunk.
tybuzz@reddit
What GPU do you have? What resolution and FPS do you game at in which games?
How much does a 5700X3D cost for you?
FlashyAd7356@reddit
Not OP but thinking about the same-ish upgrade. Have a 3600 and 5060 ti 16GB. Was wondering if I should upgrade to the 5700X3D($259), 5700X($159), or 5800X($160).
I play newly released games at 1080p and plan to do so for a while as I don’t really care about upgrading to 1440p or 4K.
Think it’s worth it?
tybuzz@reddit
Check how badly your CPU is bottlenecking. IF the GPU is significantly lower than 100% usage in game, the CPU upgrade would certainly be worth it.
At 1080p, the 5700X3D would be best, but only if you can afford it and the cost is worth it to you. 259 is pretty expensive when you can buy a new 9600X for $200 and \~$200 more will get you DDR5 and a motherboard.
FlashyAd7356@reddit
Yeah I’ll definitely have to keep my eye out for the bottlenecking but I’m thinking of just riding it out and making the leap to AM5 instead of spending $260 on a new CPU.
I’ve seen some bundles at microcenter for $299.
tybuzz@reddit
Good idea.
BigBananaBerries@reddit
Definitely. I upgraded from a 3600x to a 5600x & just a few weeks ago got a 5700x3D & while the 1st upgrade was great, that last upgrade gave me another 33% lift in benchmarks. I don't get any stuttering in Elden Ring now. Go for it.
adelphepothia@reddit
As many others have said it entirely depends on the price you can get one. The 5000 series x3d processors aren't in production anymore afaik and the prices have risen in most regions to the point where they aren't good value anymore, so the advice to upgrade to an X3D chip if you're on AM4 has changed. There was a period of time where the 5700X3D was extremely cheap (e.g. aliexpress deals) so it was a no brainer to recommend it, but those deals have pretty much all dried up now.
The non-X3D 7000 series chips perform similarly due to max frequency and IPC improvements, so I would weigh up the cost of upgrading to AM5 vs spending (potentially) a lot to upgrade on AM4. It really all depends on how much things cost in your region, and remember you can sell your old parts if you upgrade to AM5, so I would factor that in. If the prices between these options are similar I would suggest upgrading to AM5 instead of investing more into AM4. They non-x3d 7000 series gets very similar 1% and 0.1% lows to the x3d 5000 series.
I know there's a lot of 'it depends' here, but another one is to consider what you want to get out of this upgrade. What's prompted it? If you just need a general boost in CPU performance to breath some new life into your system grabbing a cheap 5600 or 5700 (non-x3d) could be a much better value option. The 5700x can be bought for about 110-120 USD on aliexpress right now.
CDNCRLS@reddit
Yes. Although watch out if the your motherboard is compatible
Yellowtoblerone@reddit
speaking from experience, yes
dudechilll@reddit
i was debating getting one for a couple weeks and just got one about an hour ago. i reasoned with myself and figured it’s only going to get more expensive and eventually be like the 5800x3d in terms of availability.
i’m upgrading from a 5600xt so it shouldn’t be a crazy upgrade but it’s still about as good as i can get on am4, within reason
ImSoCul@reddit
I did 3600 to 5700x3d and it was considerable upgrade. Big improvements in stability in particular. Also ended up upgrading GPU to 5070ti and it's handling that great
amxn@reddit
I’m selling a 5800X3D, BNIB and sealed.
Elon_Mars@reddit
Yes. I did 3900x to 5700x3d
heickelrrx@reddit
It’s huge upgrade but if it’s above 250$ I wouldn’t do it, I rather buy 5700X non 3D
damien24101982@reddit
yes, unless you are upgrading to am5 x3d cpu its basically great simple upgrade on your existing am4 machine
Verme@reddit
I upgraded a long time ago when 5800X3D's just came out... from a 3800X ... 100% worth it for gaming ... absolutely.
fenikz13@reddit
I did a very similar upgrade 3900 to 5800x3d for gaming on a 3090 and it was an insane bump especially with any stutters or anything
Doyoulike4@reddit
If you can swing one for MSRP or really close, it's 100% worth it. I feel like pretty much all of the top of the line Zen 3 Ryzen7/Ryzen9 AM4 stuff you could milk until AM6 drops.
Hairy_Somewhere9970@reddit
Yes, the performance difference between 5700X3D and 5800X3D is negligible, so go for 5700X3D it is worth it
SterlingArcher824@reddit
Yes. Lots of factors tho.
• if you have less than 32gb of ram in your system, you should also consider switching to AM5, since you are replacing cpu and ram, might be worth considering just swapping mobo as well coz price might not be far off switchinh since 5700x3d performance is not far off from 7600x/9600x.
• if you are gaming 1440p and above, with a capable gpu, you might be able to just keep your current cpu, or like a 5800x/xt is cheaper. That is ofcourse if you dont play any cpu intensive games. If you do, then 5700x3d is the way to go.
•make sure your psu and cooler can handle any upgrades you plan to make
cosmo2450@reddit
Yes
Weekly_Inspector_504@reddit
You haven't mentioned wether your CPU is causing you a bottleneck!
If you have a CPU bottleneck - the upgrade is worth it.
If you don't have a CPU bottleneck - the upgrade isn't worth it.
You need to check. Install MSI Afterburner and check your CPU and GPU usage. You can answer your own question. This way you'll learn.
Salty-Mastodon-6513@reddit
Yeah Zen2 to Zen 3 was like 25%, then X3D is another 30%-50%. Probably close to double in CPU bottlenecked situations, and close to 0 in GPU limited scenarios
_Leighton_@reddit
I still saw huge increases in situations where my previous processor was not hitting 100% usage but my GPU was. I think the faster throughput really helps any system or use case.
_Leighton_@reddit
I more than doubled my frame rate with a 5600X3D from a 1500x. Now I'm running a 4070 and it pairs great. Combo has me running bg3 1440p, maxed settings, no upscaling or frame Gen at 180fps. Hogwarts legacy at max settings and Max ray tracing 1440p was hitting 140+ fps.
AM4 X3D chips are absolutely ridiculous and unless you're running a 4/5090, 7900XTX, etc or playing extremely CPU intensive titles I don't see any reason for an existing AM4 user to go to AM5 over just getting a 5700X3D if you can find one for less than $300.
winkmichael@reddit
totally worth it, but shop around
BigSmackisBack@reddit
Only for games that use the CPU a lot and lower resolutions, for games that are gpu limited the difference will small and at 4k heavy gpu games barely noticble.
I upgraded from 3700x to 5800x3d a while ago and the difference was just a few % in the games i like, the upgrade was just to stave off an AM5 upgrade a bit longer also my upgrade was at the time sound financially 250 to max out my board vs 600+ for AM5. Now that AM5 platform is way more affordable my upgrade today wouldnt make sense.
SO unless you ave a few particular games that hammer your cpu you want to boost, save up a bit longer and go AM5 it'll be a little faster on day one and have years of life left.
cyberfrog777@reddit
Without knowing the rest of your system, probably? The l3 cache boost is nice, going from 32 to 96.
Troglodytes_Cousin@reddit
What games are you playing at what resolutions ? Is the 3800x currently limiting you in any way ? What is the rest of your system ?
No-Excitement5597@reddit
Are you loosing performance in games or apps that you use?
No-Technology479@reddit
Hell yea, i had 3800x and bought 7800xt but the fps stayed the same, got the 5700x3d and it went flying
RomanJ55@reddit
The 5800X3D is not available because AMD has stopped making them. You should consider the 5700X3D instead — it’s usually cheaper, and the performance difference is negligible.
In terms of what to expect from the upgrade:
The 5700X3D can boost your average FPS by about 12–25%, depending on the game. More importantly, thanks to its extended cache, it offers significantly more stable frametimes, better 1% lows, fewer stutters, and a generally smoother overall experience.
RettichDesTodes@reddit
5700x3d is a good gaming CPU. But if it's worth the upgrade depends on your GPU, target resolution and games
Due_Shelter_5033@reddit
5700X3D performs nearly the same as 5800X3D except for workload outside of games. But yes, it would be a pretty big difference depending on your GPU of course
bestanonever@reddit
Yes, the 5700X3D and 5800X3D are basically the same CPU (+- 5%, which is impossible to notice outside benchmarks) and they are a cool 50% faster or more for gaming, compared to your current R7 3800X, if your GPU is good enough!
Just update the BIOS to the latest stable version, change CPUs, reapply DOCP settings for RAM and enjoy the gaming gains!
whomad1215@reddit
If you can find it at a reasonable price, like $200ish, yes
And if you're cpu bound of course
Nathan_hale53@reddit
5700 is very similar to the 5800. The games that benefit from the extra cache really benefit so id say its worth it.
