Harding was fantastic. He did practically nothing, and the nation prospered. His cabinet sucked and was extremely corrupt, however. Coolidge was basically all of Harding’s good and almost none of the bad.
James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, and arguably Donald Trump would like to have a word. As much as I hate Reagan, there's a lot of stuff going for him that puts him at least in the middle of the pack. He was an excellent military strategist (even if he did increase military spending significantly), incredibly charismatic, and got us out of the stagflation of the early 80s, not to mention bringing a swift end to the Cold War.
Say what you want about Reaganomics, his AIDS response, the Iran-Contra affair, etc. Compared to some of the actual worst presidents, those are drops in the bucket. James Buchanan's incompetence started the Civil War, Andrew Johnson ruined Reconstruction and racial politics forever, and Donald Trump is just Donald Trump. A quick comparison makes Reagan look great compared to those three.
Reagan is more like a modern Andrew Jackson. There's a lot of good going for him and a lot of bad, but he's certainly very far from the worst or the best.
Reagan was bad, but we have had some pretty good awful presidents throughout history. I'm not sure he would even crack my top 5 worst presidents, especially considering he at least had a high level of Charisma that makes him charming to go bad and watch footage of.
I just personally think it's hard to beat the several guys who caused the civil war, the guy who brought back the Klan, and the guy who exacerbated one of the worst financial crises in history (even if Herbert Hoover was actually a pretty cool dude outside of his presidency). Plus, there were also a bunch of early presidents who straight up owned slaves and didn't do anything else respectable that we can point to.
I'm always confused what exactly Reagan did in office other than Iran Contra and jacking up the national debt and claiming he won the cold war when the soviets were already economically imploding regardless
I think it’s mainly just that there’s so many modern issues that can be directly traced back to him; trickle down/supply side/neoliberal economics and exploiting racial tensions to undermine social services to name a few. He also marks the end of the civil rights era more or less.
Oh and private healthcare
Now you can definitely say that other presidents were worse/consequential and I don’t think you’d be wrong but Reagan seems to hold the most direct influence over contemporary politics and is a clear point of inflection; ie he paved the way for bush and trump, whose full ramifications have been yet to be felt. Reagan being the tip of the iceberg makes him the easiest to point to and explain.
Also and it’s always fun to ask “what’s so bad about Reagan?” Cause you get a different answer each time
handled the aids epidemic absolutely catastrophically, he tried to side step it by calling it GRID (Gay Related Immune Disease) he had gay people redecorate the white house and let them die instead of taking a stand because it could’ve hurt his chances at reelection, also the funded Nicaraguan rebels against a leftist elected government by selling cocaine to lower income neighbourhoods in LA and Florida to fund the CIA
I don't remember the source for it, but I recall hearing that at the 88 GOP convention some attendees literally wore "thank god for AIDS" pins and were overjoyed at what they thought was only gay people dying from it
I too dislike Reagan because he was an idiot, but he wasn’t the worst. I don’t even think Trump is the worst… in our lifetime sure, probably 2nd worst or so, which is fitting considering what a loser idiot he is.
I know its a bait post but ill fall for it anyways.
Harding was just a president of the time. American politics always switches back and forth between progressivism and conservatism. People did not want to deal with the policies of progressivism that had caused so much controversy and change (Teddy up until Wilson), they wanted to go back to "normal" (which is always changing but whatever they thought that meant).
So it was quite literally the opposite of what OP implies. Harding won because people didn't like all of the progressive change occurring.
Well he wasnt so much a conservative in that he wanted to backtrack, but moreso keeping the status quo. His major backtracking was in cutting taxes on the highest earners.
The best part here is that trump is also fitting for the corrupt and weak comparisons more than the given names too. He's had a watergate every week of office and is notoriously the butt of countless political jabs, and he was even laughed off the fucking stage at summits before for being so easy to disrespect.
Someone lost a winning presidential race bevause he made a funny sounding cheer at a pep rally but this tub of Lard calling out a random mostly insignificant country for eating dogs for literally no reason doesn't do anything lmfao
