Does anybody else name their car? What's your car's name?
Posted by itskelso96@reddit | projectcar | View on Reddit | 160 comments
Title says it all. Every car of mine that I've gotten mechanically deeply involved with has had its own unique name, to the point that its almost spiritual. Every named vehicle ive named didn't have something arbitrary that I just threw at it, it was a name that came to me out of nowhere, clear as day while working on said car, as if out of nowhere I was struck by lightning and said "that's it, that's your name". It's gotten to where I tell people that the car itself has to TELL you its name. Its almost like youre communing with the machine spirit of the vehicle. For the record, my current project hot rod, a 1992 T top camaro in the midst of a 383 stroker cruiser build told me that its name was the Solar Angel. My 1979 350 camaro was the Perfect Stranger

I absolutely feel your sentiment, the car will usually tell you the name.
My first car, which I still have today, is Casper, a 1995 Mazda Miata. My dad named him for me, but it really fit the bill, and it's stuck. My current daily, a 2000 Subaru Forester, is Bimmy, but also Bell (short for Bell Pepper). This name was assisted by my boyfriend and my mom - boyfriend has a blue impreza, my Forester is red, and in Double Dragon 3 there's an iconic typo where it's Bimmy and Jimmy (blue and red). But when I told my mom that I got a Forester again (she has a 3rd gen that she named Kaylee, I had a green 1st gen that I named Inara - Firefly references), she commented that she looked like a shiny bell and then Bell Pepper emerged. But in my head she's Zoë.
I had a blue 1987 MR2 named Misato. A grey 1995 MX3 named Mira. A 1971 El Camino named Rhodey. A silver 2001 Miata named Sherry (oops all silver NBs). A red 1990 Miata named Andromeda (PO named her but it really fit).
I currently have a 1986/87 project MR2 that I call Red Bean, but haven't driven yet to actually be named, but I might just stick with Red Bean forever because it fits well lol.
awesomeaustinv2@reddit
My '66 Thunderbird is named Phoebe, and my '90 Miata is named Misty. The T-bird got its name from the Friends character because it's full of quirks, and the Miata got its name from the first time my dad saw a Miata and misread the badge on the back, thinking it said "Mista." Also the window doesn't seal perfectly, so the name is appropriate lol.

One of the Mustangs we're building may end up doing some grudge racing. The hood we bought for it was plasti-dipped, and we were pain-stakingly peeling it off. My buddy mentioned that there was a tool for it called the "Crud Thug". For some reason, this was hilarious to us. I dont normally name them, but we're working on multiple mustangs at the same time and a name would make it easier when discussing work in the shop, and since that sounded like a name for a grudge car, it's now called the CRUD THUG.

It’s a 1969 Fairlane 500 known as “Big Engine.” When my 1st daughter was about four, so around 1994, my father fired it up in the garage so I could hear the new exhaust system. I was holding her, and her eyes went huge when he revved it up a couple of times, and I told her that was the engine making the noise. She exclaimed to me, “BIG engine!” Later we got him a custom license plate frame that reads “POPPA’S BIG ENGINE!” and it’s been known as that since. I have the car now, and the plate frame is still on it. It’s not actually big in muscle car terms (351w), but it’s pretty rowdy.

My family in general names their vehicles, as do I. My ‘97 Accord EX was named Zip Zip by my mother, because prior to it she drove a 1990 Suburban 2500 and compared to that thing anything feels pretty zippy and easy to park. My father’s ‘03 F150 crew cab (with lots of options) he named the Redneck Limo. My mother called that suburban Brutus, although I affectionately refer to it as ‘The Boat’. Also present in my family’s driveway is a wrecked (via drunk driver at a red light) 1978 Cutlass Supreme Brougham that my parents named the Gutless, because its original (very worn out) 260 V8 couldn’t peg the 85 MPH speedometer, no matter how long you floored it for.
