It can also be a sign that you have a bleed in your upper gastrointestinal tract (e.g. from a perforated stomach ulcer), which can be a medical emergency. Unless you know that you have eaten something that turns shit black (e.g. licorice, iron supplements, pepto bismol), you should get it checked ASAP.
