How to find forums which have active userbases?

I use Reddit mostly to see content on Linux and gaming, sometimes Ireland. How should I go on about trying to find active forums on the topics? I don't have any faith in the search engines.
Are there any forum directories reliably kept up to date, which you'd consider of good quality?

There’s two active forum directories that I’m aware of that currently keep their database up to date with new forums regularly added.

Both are them have categories set up where you can find niche based communities as well.
