What happens when you win spending money?

People that have won a radio or TV competition where you win tickets to an event, flights and accommodation paid and then it says "plus £10k spending money" how does this actually work? Do you literally just get said money transferred to your account? Do you have to ask for what you want? I keep hearing a competition on Talksport radio where they offer £5k spending money plus tickets and everything for the Club World Cup final in New York and I can't help but think I wouldn't spend the whole £5k. Would the winner get to keep the leftovers? Any personal experiences?

I used to be a radio producer. In the early 00s I was tasked with meeting three sets of competition winners who were having lunch with WWE stars on Friday before seeing the live show for free on Saturday..their weekend in London included £500 spending money. A taxi collected them from their hotel to the venue in Chelsea where lunch was taking place. I met them in reception and handed each party an envelope which contained their show tickets and the £500 in cash.

I guess it's the way they always phrase "spending money". It sounds like money just for the trip. I wouldn't be surprised if I heard some people can't be bothered to go and just accept the cash in that case!

Depends what it is I guess. If I won tickets to the FA Cup final before knowing who'd be in it (a random memory from Match or Shoot magazine back in the day) I could imagine not going if I didn't care for either team.

Its just a cash prize, and they frame it as you also have spending money for the tickets we're giving you, because people would be like 'i have tickets but can't afford everything else'. They can't advertise it and not give it you.

I've won a high value competition before that included spending money ($2k USD). They transferred it as cash, along with the cash equivalent for some air flights
