I dunno man, comparing two different quotes from books with two different authors and going "this says a lot about society" is the genius social commentary that I'd expect from 4chan.
Is it an "industrial complex" or the fact that literally anyone can write a self help book. Self help books are just people's opinions on life, yeah 99% of it is going to be bullshit.
Like I said, it's all just people's opinions. Unfortunately just like anyone trying to sell their opinion on anything, you need to be smart enough to tell when someone's take is actually good or not.
Step 1: pick 2 unspecified books with unspecified lengths.
Steo 2: look for different quotes on both books wuth out comparing in an way
Step 3: society
Self-help books are a massive industry built on the desire to exploit individuals struggling alone and niche anecdotes. So, so very few are either entirely useless or outright detrimental it's best to never pick one up ever.
If OOP actually did do this, all they're finding is that these books are appealing to general swaths of the sexes in what the author believes the reader will eat up and attempt to apply. They appeal to many men's insecurities and feelings of shortcomings and to many women's insecurities of not being seen as equal and not being treated fairly.
These books are, far more often than not, not founded in truth, but rather a career author's self-important ramblings, a nepo-baby's ignorant instructions, or an idealist's unfounded narrative.
If you need help, seek out professionals. Self-help books may present appealing solutions, but often they are based off of surface level understandings. A professional can see you, talk with you, and work through your problems with you and help you come to both conclusions and solutions. Professional help is like medicine. You can either meet a doctor, psychiatrist, councilor or therapist and be screened for more accurate diagnosis and prescriptions, or you can pop self-help book pills and hope that one works.
I read Meditations by Marcus Aurelius and The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck. I also read How to Win Friends and Influence People. These were all good books in their own right and definitely helped me with what they were intended to.
I do find though that a lot of good fiction books stick with me more. I read Norwegian Wood as a suicidal teenage boy and that hit way harder than all those books combined.
I think that it's all about what you read and when you read it and how you can internalize what you're reading.
I was scared of growing up and I wanted to just stay young forever but as Haruki Murakami put it
"Only the dead stay nineteen forever."
A cliché thing to say yeah but things often become cliché for a reason, usually because there's a fair modicum of truth to it.
Thank you. This is exactly what I realized earlier after reading a ton of them. I'm glad that I left that dopamine loop.
You know, reading these books give you somewhat of a hit that you've accomplished something and have progressed a bit. Unfortunately it's not really the case (most of the times atleast).
I have yet to read a really good self help book which couldn't be explained in under 5 minutes with simple words.
Your final paragraph looks promising, what type of professionals do you mean? Most self help books are about mindset, so do you mean a therapist? Or did you mean some type of a mentor or a business analyst?
Certified therapists, councilors, and psychiatrists. It's also good to get a psych eval. as you may be dealing with a chronic mental health issue. I've known many people with massive underlying mental health issues who have filled.and read self help books cover to cover when what they needed was prescription medication. Unfortunately, in the US at least 2 couldn't even get what they needed thanks to scabby insurance doctors (a practice that needs to be outlawed).
Self help books do not help with chronic mental health issues, whether depression, ADHD, or the likes.
Self help books are like a stimulant, they give you a short lived burst of motivation to be more productive and turn your life around. Then, that excitement fizzles out In a week or two, and you buy another book full of the same generic advice and inspirational tone to carry you through another couple weeks.
And what happens when OOP ctrl+f's "you deserve" in the male book? You kids these days need to learn to think critically, you repost these stupid things without every thinking about them
I have to assume that both phrases show up a considerable amount of times in both men and women’s self help books, but that doesn’t incite the feelings OP wants you to feel.
You have to remember, a big portion of the audience for male self-help books thinks feelings are gay. They aren't going to write a whole bunch of stuff about how it's okay to be sad sometimes.
Right and the female audience has no desire to actually take accountability and become a better person them self, so if course it would appeal to them that they're already perfect and deserve the best
Some years ago I read "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" out of curiosity because it was the original book that was supposed to help men and women in relationships understand each other better.
You know what my main takeaway from that book was?
That women are never fucking happy.
The author had only one piece of advice for helping women understand men in the entire book. That advice was that when there's an issue in the relationship, to give the man some time to digest everything before you sit down to talk it out. Dont rush him to talk before he's ready. That's it. That was the only advice for women.
The rest of the book was not even really advice for men to understand women, it was a laundry list of things men need to do to make their woman happy.
Now, it's been years since I read it but the one example I do remember was reflective of how I said that my takeaway from the whole book is that women are never happy.
The author cited this real world example of a couple they counseled. He was comfortable with their combined income. She was unhappy with their money situation. Even though they made ends meet. So in order to make her happy, he got a job that paid a lot better, but required him to put in a lot more hours. Now she was unhappy that he had to spend so much time at work. Even though he was doing it because of her. Never fucking happy.
Point is, I don't care if there even was a control sample. The OP is an accurate observation from the experience I've had with those kinds of books.
these books are being sold to the intended audience because it's what that audience buys
it's telling men "you have to" because it's what men buy
it's a self-imposed double standard you can free yourself of- kind of at least
the blackpill that every moron channer needs to swallow is that they're playing out a painful, stupid version of feminist critiques of the patriarchy from 70 years ago through green frogs
but these guys will accept that, because they'd be too embarrassed and emasculated, because they've been trained to protect their fragile ego in a patriarchal society that treats them as useless lmao
and instead you see them seethe and cope and blame women, rather than realizing both sexes are oppressed under the same structure in different ways
double standards, set by two different people, who never said anything about the other standard...
the only thing this shows is that two different authors, with completely different lives, have different solutions for problems that probably aren't even the same. acting like anon revealed anything insightful through his shit test is ridiculous
