Why would my car audio sound worse after installing a new aftermarket stereo?

Hi all,
I recently bought a new stereo for my 2003 Hyundai Elantra because I wanted Bluetooth and an aux input. The factory stereo has no tape deck and no option for aux, even wiring something through the back is impossible. So I got a Boss 508uab. It was a cheap option but I thought Boss was a decent company and I wanted to keep it cheap. Installed it with a friend after watching a few YouTube videos and tested it before putting the dashboard back together. It sounded ok and I figured I'd just have to mess with the bass and treble settings to fine tune it. At the . But even on the first day I got it I just thought it sounded terrible. I tried CDs, Bluetooth, aux, and the radio and they all sound the same.
There's barely any bass and the mids and highs are very muddy and sometimes painful when I try to turn it up. My old stereo used to rattle the rear view mirror with the bass and sounded so good that I actually asked my sister (it was her car before mine) if she had upgraded the sound system. My friends also commented how it used to sound so much better. Now it sounds like junk and I don't know why.
Ive been putting it off because I mostly listen to podcasts and it does the job for that and having Bluetooth is nice but the sound quality is really starting to bother me. I'm using the same factory speakers, no aftermarket amp or anything. I'm not sure if the 03 Elantra has a factory amp or not or if it's built into the stereo that I removed or something. But any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks for reading.

not sure if its the same problem but the oem factory radio stopped working on my 2008 tucson so i got a new double din pioneer stereo and installed it but even after adjusting the eq settings it sounds worse than the factory stereo the bass is a bit muddy

Did you fix this, my Volvo s60 2006 same issue. My factory radio died, best sound system ever, even when using an FM transmitter.
New radio aftermarket and it sounds shit, muffled
