Failed to mention the offshoring of mfg, just when Gen X started into the workplace, It's also about the same time the disintegration of small towns, social organizations, pensions and a pullback of company sponsorships of civic endevors.
It was me. I also raised the prices on avocado toast and re-routed Gen Z spring breakers from their fucking TikToks in Cancun to the Villages in Florida.
My kids are Gen Z and they and their friends are really sweet. I have nicer kids than my parents did. Let’s leave the ‘kids deez days’ to the boomers :)
OMFG!!! How can they print shit like this, I'm so...
Man, I wish I had some ice cream in the house.
Note: Apparently people also forget we are the generation of undiagnosed/untreated ADHD..
Oooh, I bought custard today!
To go with the 30 second microwavable mini puddings I also bought today!
I think tea is sorted! :)
...
Or should I use up the last of my salted caramel icecream and add some salted caramel sauce to it?
Meh, whatever... I could have BOTH! :)
ADHD Side note:
Reminiscing about doing blow w/ random girls in the bathrooms at the bar/club/Subway...no way you doing that shit today. I’d be coming with my own testing kit.
Back to the post.
We knew how to have fun. I would never do blow off the back of a toilet like back in the day. I’m lucky I never ended up with coodies from all those dollar bills. Good times, stupid but fun.
I’ve heard from a few medical professionals that food dye can be a huge trigger, particularly blue or variation like green or purple. I’ve never been diagnosed but I avoid blue food dye and will notice a huge change in how I feel if I have some. I can sleep, can’t concentrate, lose my train of thought mid sentence and just feel generally shitty until it’s out of my system. I’m sure there were many factors that when combined, make the symptoms more intense and more prevalent.
I’d also add video games to that list. I know I would get into hyper focus mode and then immediately start the game over if I screwed up. Endless do overs made me less attentive to the final goal because it will always be there once I get all the moves right. Plus they kept us out of our parents’ hair once they got home from their 9-5 exhausted.
The final goal of the game was never the final goal, "once I get all the moves right" was the goal. A new digital puzzle that must be solved so completely or you didn't really solve it. It's why only some games ever had any replay value.
Cursed?
I'm early Gen X, about to turn 59, comfortably retired for nearly 4 years though still paying off my mortgage.
If this is cursed - bring it on!
No, I'm not in the USA.
The Economist: “A recent 30-country poll by Ipsos finds that 31% of Gen Xers say they are ‘not very happy’ or ‘not happy at all’, the most of any generation.”
This is news? We had a generation-defining movie more than 30 years ago titled “Reality Bites.” We haven’t changed, Economist. Go away.
Sad truth is he isnt completely wrong.
We inherited the shit show economy from the previous generation, who are STILL in power and refuse to leave. We have hit a point where many of us quit caring about trying to make a change decades ago. Most of us have been involved in several major world changing crisis over our adult lives, let alone since we were born.
And at this point we are just over it.
You forgot to post the damn article. 🙄

Is it truly a Gen X thing? Seriously lately I just don’t give a fuck anymore what people think. I don’t stress. I don’t thought it was me and my job and dealing with people had made me the way I am.
The Economist used to be the only print subscription that I paid for. Really awesome centerist content in the 90 and early 2020's. They got weird since 2010, at least for me. New gen of editors, I guess.
Slackers? I been working non-stop since I was twelve because my parents were too drunk to provide. Everything I have, I earned myself. Nobody gave me any fucking handouts.
Luckily, as a British GenXer, I'm old enough to have read this, so it's been decades since I gave a fuck about anything The Economist has to say:
https://www.theguardian.com/media/1999/jun/14/8
Sample:
"But there's a funny thing about the Economist. The closer you look, the weaker it gets. Beneath the blizzard of one-liners, Oxford Union ripostes and snazzy graphs, it contains less original reporting than many other news magazines and, when it comes to its vaunted analysis, has shown a remarkable capacity over the past couple of years to be demonstrably wrong.*
