A block of frozen milk we get from our neighbor’s meals on wheels drop offs, kept on the curb as she scooters around(don’t worry, I had her move it to the freezer in a ziplock lmao).

I lived with someone for a couple years (roommates) who I would find occasionally in the middle of the night, sitting on the counter with a cold stick of butter in hand, taking bites off of it. I never could figure it out, but I think he just liked butter.

ZaharaSararie@reddit
People most likely don't think you're dumb. They probably see frozen milk as a more acceptable and less intense unsweetened frozen treat, compared to a stick of butter, which would be a lot more intense and dense, even if it were sweetened.

lostinthesauceband@reddit
Most people don't like cow's milk. Almond milk is all the rage
Lyress@reddit
Oat milk is where it's at.
Equivalent-Sink4612@reddit
Can I ask you- do you have a favorite brand(are you in the US?) I liked it, so much better than soy milk or rice milk, definitely on par/slightly better than almond milk. Don't remember the brand, my partner did not like it at all, unfortunately.
I have no issues with lactose/cow milk, but my partner has liver/gall bladder issues, so I would happily give it up for an alternative if it's better for him. Not much of a milk drinker/cereal person anyway (but he is), just half and half for coffee, and cheese. Not giving that up, no way no how. Something different for the coffee would be fine.
carolineo@reddit
I love Oatly!
Equivalent-Sink4612@reddit
Good to know, thank-you!! Have you tried a lot of brands?
carolineo@reddit
Yeah, I've been making an iced espresso drink at home almost every day lately so I have tried my fair share of them! The Califia Farms 'extra creamy' one is really good too. I'm willing to bet most non-corporate coffee shops would give you a taster sample of their oat milk if you're trying to find one you like without buying gallon after gallon!
Equivalent-Sink4612@reddit
Well I appreciate the tips!! This is my second try at it, so there's not a lot of leeway. I will have to do all of the testing, and then be like, "I swear, this one is really good! Pleeeeeeease try it." And I will have to be very thorough in my testing, my partner's a scientific minded guy, it would probably help my case if I made a spreadsheet, lol:)
Delicious-Summer5071@reddit
My partner loves Planet Oat. It has sweetened, unsweetend, one that is creamier (her favorite), one designed for coffee/espresso drinks, and just... regular. They also make oatmilk coffee creamers that she said were decent, she just likes the regular more.
We get it at Walmart so it's not hidden in fancy grocery stores, which is nice.
Equivalent-Sink4612@reddit
Wow, that sounds pretty good, and good to know I can get it at Walmart!! I'm encouraged now, last time I tried oat milk I think there was only one brand. They've come a long way, it seems. I was thinking I'd have to make the trek out to Wholefoods. Thank-you so much!!!
Delicious-Summer5071@reddit
I was raised on skim milk, so I'm 100% a whole milk kind of person, but even I can admit that it tastes pretty good. We've cooked with it too without any real change in flavor- though we made sure not to use the the vanilla (?) kind. Walmart has other brands too if you want to try a bunch 😁 You're very welcome!
Equivalent-Sink4612@reddit
Oh I love whole milk, you know what's what:) I even get heavy cream sometimes...VERY rarely, just to cook with, you know;)
Well, I'm kind of excited about my oat milk exploration, lol!
aurora_rain1377@reddit
Oatly is really good, especially the Barista Edition in the grey box.
Equivalent-Sink4612@reddit
Nice that they have a Barista edition, that's encouraging:) and Oatly seems easy enough to find.
angelok91@reddit
For coffee Chobani Extra Creamy is the way to go. You can’t tell the difference from whole fat milk.
Oatly which is available everywhere is too thin, silky and changes the flavor of the coffee. Even their barista version is too thin in my opinion but a better option than the regular. But others may like that though.
Planet Oat, Mooala, and Califia just doesn’t taste good to me.
For cereal, you really can’t tell the difference so I just use the Costco brand.
Equivalent-Sink4612@reddit
Wow, thanks so much for your comprehensive reply, very helpful!:)
You are right about the creaminess/texture being important for coffee, and not throwing off the coffee flavor.
I will try to find the Chobani Extra Creamy, and maybe try a store brand.
WifeOfSpock@reddit (OP)
It’s really easy to make yourself, if you can’t find one you like.
Equivalent-Sink4612@reddit
Is it?? I might have to try that!! Seems like it would be easier than almond milk, and definitely cheaper.
Thank-you so much!! I'm kind of excited about it, lol:)
Lyress@reddit
Not in the US sorry. I'm in Finland and I just buy the supermarket brands. I like them more than oatly.
Equivalent-Sink4612@reddit
Yes, Oatly was the brand I tried. Well, I am of Finnish descent, I would trust your assessment of dairy/dairy adjacent pructs:)
May be worth a trip to Trader Joe's or Wholefoods to check out their selections. Thanks!!!

If you haven't gone in a while, you may want to consider seeing a dentist for a checkup, since sensitivity can be a sign of some issues (e.g. wife had tooth sensitivity to coldfor years until she saw a dentist. She found out one of her gums was receding and required a graft, which mostly resolved the issue)
If you go regularly and already know you're good, sorry for the bother.
WifeOfSpock@reddit (OP)
I just can’t afford it in the US. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’ll probably lose my teeth. Pregnancy completely destroyed my dental health, unfortunately.
ric1live@reddit
I see. I am sorry about that. If going to Mexico isn't an option, then maybe you can find a dental school relatively close?
My wife got her dental work done in Mexico and it worked for her. The dental school near me does pretty much everything you can have done at a dentist office at a fraction of the cost even if you don't have insurance.
Kindly-Tree7124@reddit
I would too! 🥴

In many parts of Europe, at least, our butter is a lot yellower.
GeckoCowboy@reddit
…not the same poster, but I’m in New Hampshire? I’ve never seen a mostly white block of butter. I’ve seen pale yellow butter - but that white, I’d think undyed margarine, or like crisco shortening, or lard or something. (To be clear I’m not saying butter that color doesn’t exist or anything, not got a reason to not believe you all, just that it’s a new one to me!)
the_snook@reddit
A lot of American butter is from grain-fed cows, which makes it paler. If you're from Europe or Australia/NZ, it looks basically white compared to what you're used to.

Just google image "stick of butter" and you can see plenty that look very similarly. This image is not white, it's yellowish, same as like this, and the wrapper around it is especially making us feel this way.

When they were really small, I’d make them breastmilk and fruit puree popsicles to help with the heat or teething.
And if they have regular popsicles, I tend to prefer to make them myself. They get to choose their juice flavor, and add what they want.

My kid loves frozen tomato paste
notabigmelvillecrowd@reddit
How do you even figure out something like this?
Berbers1@reddit
When ever I opened a can of paste, he likes to eat it. I freeze the remaining paste in about 2 Tbsp portions, he likes the frozen portions too.
lih9@reddit
I freeze pasta sauce in ice cube trays overnight when i'm meal prepping and sometimes catch my kid snacking on them. That might be it.
bro0t@reddit
Probably the kid eating tomato paste going “this, but instead its ice cream”
Just guessing though
Sad-Meringue-694@reddit
Is it bad i’m getting brain freeze just looking at this? (No joke)

Ok, when I was in Mexico, they would sell something like this. It was the milk in a carton. The ones that aren't refrigerated. They would mix this milk with chocolate or strawberry mix like nesquik or banana or even cantaloupe. Then they'd put it in these thick plastic bags. Tie the top in a knot and throw it in a freezer. When they're frozen, just cut off the corner and enjoy. I loved those things. Just an idea for the summer. They'd be fun for her to make and all the different flavors to choose from.
QueezyF@reddit
What’s funny is I know about those from a particularly unflattering picture of one made with Oreos posted on this sub. They look pretty damn good though.
doggysmomma420@reddit
I don't know how I'd feel about the oreo, but they are good. I'd buy them all the time in Mexico, but then I just started making my own.
WifeOfSpock@reddit (OP)
Im Filipina, and we have something similar. Called them ice candy growing up. Same type of mix and also in a bag, though tube shaped.
doggysmomma420@reddit
They're called bolis in Mexico. Aren't they great? They definitely helped when the summer heat was bad. I might have to make some this summer now that I'm thinking about them, lol.
Felicior_Augusto@reddit
My nephew likes his ice cream melted. He'll ask for a bowl and leave it until he can just drink it.
almostkindamaybeidk@reddit
I did this growing up in Asia, but with juice box cartons! We'd cut open the top then drink/eat with a straw and spoon.
WifeOfSpock@reddit (OP)
I got stuff like that growing up in Hawai’i, too. I’d love the frozen juice cups they’d pass out during outside events(called them “ice cakes”).
QueezyF@reddit
Reminds me of the homemade juice pops I’d make as a kid. I remember the orange ones being really sour.
obscuremarble@reddit
One question...you said you had her put it in a Ziploc in the freezer. Does that mean she returns to it later after it's been melty? Hahah
WifeOfSpock@reddit (OP)
Today’s the hottest day it’s been in a while, so the melty ick factor is recent🤣
NuffMusic@reddit
frozen fucking milk?

I thought it was frozen mash potatoes
Gandalf_the_Tegu@reddit
Meanwhile i thought it was candles.... my elementary did mini shop classes way back when, as a form of making. Hristmas gifts for our parents kor whoeever we gifted to) and one was making candles. She had a pot of the wax melted and we had to bring a milk carton in, add wick, and pore the wax into carton. Let harden. Then we repped open the carton and decorated the candle. Conclusion, it looked like this before kids decorated it. 😅 haha.

ShakyBones2876@reddit
She needs to get into the frozen milk business! She can revolutionize school lunches. I’m picturing those Minute Maid juice bars but it’s milk instead of juice. A frozen blueberry swirl milk bar sounds fire.
TonyStewartsWildRide@reddit
Your kid just eats frozen milk? Why? Why god why?
oniiichanUwU@reddit
It’s basically just sad ice cream lol. My favourite childhood hot day snack was ice cubes or just a cold lemon cut in half 😭
TonyStewartsWildRide@reddit
Frozen lemons makes way more sense than frozen milk lmao

This is basically a limber de leche, it's just missing the sweetened condensed milk and a bit of vanilla (that's how grandma used to make them)
anonmommm@reddit
Idk was the worse the idea that it’s butter, or the fact that it’s frozen milk.
Tiny-Nature3538@reddit
Lollll I saw a bar of soap… it’s frozen milks tho yes??
GlassTablesAreStupid@reddit
At least it’s not jam packed with food coloring and sugar
Cloud_N0ne@reddit
That doesn’t sound horrible now that I know it’s not a block of cheese/butter.

Well...it's not super unhealthy and full of sugar like ice cream/popsicles so i guess it's ok.

I was afraid it was milk that was turned into a block of yogurt/curd from spoilage.
Frozen milk is better. Marginally.
