I've been really struggling trying to hold off on this one
TheMoves@reddit
Me too, I was about to buy a WBP Jack from Atlantic and then this sale came back and now I’m completely paralyzed haha not sure what to do
MSB3000@reddit
Just get both duhhh
high_drag_low_speed@reddit
The gun is cheap but 308 be expensive
Equivalent_Reply_416@reddit (OP)
It is but good thing it's a 20 rd mag and it only comes with 1, you can only reload so fast.
DesignerLanguage1123@reddit
You’re right that’s like only 20 bucks a minute 😂
Cobra__Commander@reddit
When mags were $1 buying 50-100 was the thing to do. Lifetime supply of mags for less than a week of food.
Equivalent_Reply_416@reddit (OP)
You can find them for $10 or less used steel mags I've seen
meiswhitey@reddit
Can you link me?
GreenGiraffeGrazing@reddit
Numrich gun parts (surplus gun part seller) has used aluminum mags for $5.95, like new for $7.95
Equivalent_Reply_416@reddit (OP)
Last saw them on "hkparts.net"
Commandd0g@reddit
Ive gotten about 50 or so off GAFS averaging under $6/mag in the last 6 months or so
CrankyOperator@reddit
But battle rifle Chad Status is LEGEND!
Shoddy-Beginning810@reddit
I've seen some pretty standard sales were 308 goes down to around 75 cents around or less. Still more but not outrageous
high_drag_low_speed@reddit
My broke ass is on a .22lr and ramen diet
Shoddy-Beginning810@reddit
I picked up a Mossberg 44b off of local shop for 150 bucks couple years ago. Best money ever spent, awesome shooting 22, also a I'm military surplus although I didn't know that at the time!
high_drag_low_speed@reddit
My 10/22 gets way more action than any of my Gucci rifles so I get it. Most fun to be had
akmjolnir@reddit
I just picked up an AR uppers in .22LR from GAFS. Blowing through 500 rounds of 5.56 & 250 of .300BLK in a couple hours with a SS is expensive.
palau_original@reddit
You can buy from Walmart tho
redsox985@reddit
I love that they stopped selling ammo for "weapons of war" or whatever BS their PR team pushed out, but still carry Winchester M80 ball because... I guess you can sight on a .308 with 4 MOA ammo?
bigfatround0@reddit
Walmart still sells ammo? The ones around me got rid of even rifle ammo. All they carry nowadays are cleaning kits and pellet and bb guns.
xKHAZx@reddit
leave the suburbs and they still have deer rifle calibers and birdshot - I think they stopped selling .223/5.56 though
bigfatround0@reddit
Yeah, they stopped selling .223/5.56 cause of bad press they got since it's the most common ar caliber and we all know ars are the devil's.
xKHAZx@reddit
paying sales tax on ammo at Walmart is so 10 years ago
high_drag_low_speed@reddit
I feel like all the regularly carry is that shitty Winchester white box
UgliestCookie@reddit
This is literally the only thing that's held me back. I've got a really very decently built M5E1 that's neglected because I don't really like \~$.75 per trigger pull.
KGb_Voodo0@reddit
Love mine, mags are cheap too but .308 is expensive. Just took it out for the first time worked flawlessly
DugnutttBobson@reddit
Where do you get your mags?
GreenGiraffeGrazing@reddit
Numrich gun parts (surplus gun part seller) has used aluminum mags for $5.95, like new for $7.95
KGb_Voodo0@reddit
I got 2 packs of 3 from Atlantic with the rifle and some at HK parts
Mkilbride@reddit
I held off for most of memorial day but caved eventually. I wanted to buy a really nice bolt Action .308, a Tikk T3x, so I could take my time and enjoy shooting .308
But I thought about it. Even on sale the Tikka T3X Hunter I want is like 800~, and there's really no iron sights, so I'd need to buy a scope to go with...that's a few hundred more at least. Plus mount. So we're talking easily over double.
Plus, the T3X is a production rifle, I can get them anytime. This CA3 could go away at any time.
HomersDonut1440@reddit
I’ve been having the same struggle. I don’t need it. I have no use for it. But I want it.
xKHAZx@reddit
I’m between this or a Remington 700
which Cold War LARP kit do I choose
HomersDonut1440@reddit
700’s are everywhere. These are not. If you have the dough, buy this.
xKHAZx@reddit
That’s an angle I hadn’t considered. Thanks man.
HomersDonut1440@reddit
For sure. I learned early on to buy the weird shit when you can. There will always be 2,000 Remington 700’s on gunbroker. But these, while not rare, are less common and never at this price.
semi-anon-in-Oly@reddit
Move out to Washington state, that’ll take care of it…
xKHAZx@reddit
I’m already considering leaving Minnesota for Wisconsin once again after the binary trigger ban lmao you can keep your west coast bullshit to yourself
pizzapizzafrenchfry@reddit
For future me: How hard is it to clone one of the marksman (GS3M?) version with this as a base?
Stock...fat handguard...claw and scope + grip?
I am assuming it would be lunatic pricing also for surplus HK stuff
Gremguy22@reddit
FYI: There is no conventional or cheap way to mount an optic on these.
The options are either a like $250 rail mount that may or may not work or you weld a pic rail to the top of it that will likely cost you a few hundred.
If you are cool with no easy optic option its a great deal if not you are prob better off just going for something with an easier mounting option.
Just informing folks.
ssgatl@reddit
Damn I wish I knew this before
kurrpy@reddit
https://hkparts.net/all-parts/mfi-universal-low-profile-scope-mount/
I've used this before and it worked well. Been out of stock for a while though
pakindamew@reddit
This will not work for this specific rifle. There is no recoil lug.
ssgatl@reddit
Without the recoil lug is it any good?
alexmg2420@reddit
No, it is very likely to shift around under recoil. There's a reason the recoil lug exists.
ssgatl@reddit
Exactly
KnotSlip6969@reddit
So, it's the same method as an MP5 clone. No big deal.
EstelleTheWhiteMage@reddit
This might be a Bubba idea, but could one JB Weld a metal piece the same size/spot where the lug should be? Or would the lateral recoil forces be too great?
CrankyOperator@reddit
Just find a local yokel who welds, toss him a case of cigs, boom rail. It may not be pretty, but this it was cheap and this isn't some bougie collectable.
New-Refrigerator-182@reddit
good thing i use iron sights like a man
Gremguy22@reddit
No hate on irons. My retro AR with irons is one of my favorites and I regularly carry a 1911.
Just posting so the consumer can be informed.
New-Refrigerator-182@reddit
Lol yeah I gotcha just kidding. Much appreciated
Mkilbride@reddit
Even if you spend like 200-300$ to weld a rail on this thing, or buy the Sphur mount for like 200$(tons and tons of people have verified it holds zero), you're still coming out ahead. The next option is the PTR GI at like 1200$-1300$. And these are made by PTR under contract.
This is still an incredible deal. Also, MFI said they are coming out with a claw mount that will work 100%.
CrankyOperator@reddit
Wouldn't one of those MP5 mounts that replace the rear drum work? I mean you're limited to dots, but it's possible I think with these. However, let's be real, it's a fun gun. A range toy. Anyone looking to set up some sort of real use for a 308 would/should spend more on something else. This is a shits n giggles blaster for most. At $650, worth it.
Gremguy22@reddit
No lug, no easy optic.
I certainly see the appeal and I love the platform. I would definitely be in on one if there was a easier optic option.
I just can't bring myself to buy a big long heavy 308 without the ability to put a optic on it lol
CrankyOperator@reddit
The MP5 rear sight dot mount doesn't need a lug but, yes, it looks you to dots.
It's all on the users want though. I'm fine with this being irons. It's a novelty. If I were to hunt or wanted something for "sHtF" this wouldn't be the gun I'd choose in the first place. But I get it, sometimes that's how it is.
Gremguy22@reddit
From my understanding hold is sub optimal with this rifle.
I am not trying to dissuade anyone. This is a cool gun for a great price. Perfectly serviceable with irons.
I just want consumers to be mindful of optic mounting difficulties.
BudgetPhoenix@reddit
yes it should work
Broad-Dragonfruit992@reddit
Someone give me a reason not to buy this. Please
Equivalent_Reply_416@reddit (OP)
Can't really put a scope on it and Atlantic wouldn't send me stickers when I emailed them. Other than that I doubt they'll be this cheap again after the supply is sold out.
Euphoric_Garbage_@reddit
this will take og g3 scope mounts
Equivalent_Reply_416@reddit (OP)
Someone mentioned that but they didn't out a certain lug on it or something like that, Atlantic firearms even said there's not one when I reached out. Idk tbh, do you have a pic?
Broad-Dragonfruit992@reddit
No stickers is big. That could do it for me. this thing would look sick next to the gaming setup though so no scope isn’t that big a deal, I have other guns for range.
Ok-Surprise-8423@reddit
Nope, buy it. This is the cheapest way into the .308 caliber. I don’t ever see them getting cheaper.
Broad-Dragonfruit992@reddit
Yeah I bought it lol. Had to be done
OregonTrailislife@reddit
This is a great price for sure, but most people are going to take this out 2-3 times max before it goes in the back of your safe. Might be cool to mount your a wall though for your man cave.
bigfatround0@reddit
I still think the best wall mounted guns are a pair of 16 in. heritage rough rider revolvers. One day I'll actually buy a pair and mount them to my wall.
DugnutttBobson@reddit
Love this idea, will be doing it
bigfatround0@reddit
Post some pics when you, bro. That's gonna be one godly setup.
DugnutttBobson@reddit
Framing the vault room right now. I still have a lot to figure out about how I'll be doing the wall storage, but next time rough riders have a deal I'm in
bigfatround0@reddit
Good luck with it all.
LePfeiff@reddit
I have one in gold, it is the dumbest gun ive ever purchased by a longshot lmao. The barrel is so heavy that you dont feel any recoil, and it isnt fun to shoot. It will probably be more fun once i get a carbine stock for it
Equivalent_Reply_416@reddit (OP)
Probably need a bipod on those
bigfatround0@reddit
True lol
CrankyOperator@reddit
I almost never shoot my ARs and almost always pull shit out like this, AKs, etc. Some of us are highly regarded.
okcumputer@reddit
ARs got boring because everyone has one (or 10). They arent interesting. I want goofy shit to play with.
Equivalent_Reply_416@reddit (OP)
True not everyone has the money for a variation of fun range guns.
Greeniskey24@reddit
Kit build or something?
Fabulous_Feeling5172@reddit
Portuguese surplus g3 kits, built out with American barrel and receiver by PTR
Equivalent_Reply_416@reddit (OP)
And those Portuguese parts were likely made by HK. So good surplus parts
Equivalent_Reply_416@reddit (OP)
The kit is like $225 this is for a working G3 clone assembled by PTR.
wormdrt@reddit
Don't do it guys. My c308 which is what these used to be called has reciever bulges
Mkilbride@reddit
Buddy. This isn't the same at all. This is made by PTR using surplus parts, it is not the C308, nor the CETME.
These things fuck.
wormdrt@reddit
Oh, you're correct. That makes all the difference. I've had nothing but trouble with the c308 from Century but PTR surely makes a better roller delayed .308
Equivalent_Reply_416@reddit (OP)
What does this even mean? Do you have a pic and did you just not reach out to customer support to have it fixed or soemthing?
TapirTamer@reddit
Roller delayed blowback on 308 sounds rough
Mkilbride@reddit
How so? It dampens the recoil.
ACDC-1FAN@reddit
It is. I have a PTR91 and all my friends shot it once and then never again. I get a lot of “nope, I’m good” when I ask if people wanna shoot it.
I’m big as shit though so it doesn’t bother me I love the fuckin thing.
AskMeWhyIFish@reddit
C'mon century, put a fuckin scope mount on it and sell for 50 bucks more...
greatestging@reddit
Yup the major problems with these is century opted not to weld on the standard issue recoil lug onto these in front of the rear sight that came on these FMP kits. I would not trust the long term zero of a scope mount with it especially since PTR receivers are known to be out of spec with the receiver side cuts where a mount clamps into
Berry_Micockiner@reddit
I’m glad knowledgeable autists like you exist in the comments (#nohomo)
What you said was enough to keep me from buying this because I don’t know shit fuck about these but I’ve always wanted one
Mkilbride@reddit
Buy this. Get a rail welded on if you want for 200-300$, or use MFI's mount specifically designed for this.
The user below is suggesting you buy a gun hat is over 2x the cost for a welded on rail. Besides that the quality is identical.
AshsChromeBush1911@reddit
Get the PTR with the welded rail. They're a blast and will huck brass down range with every shot.
LiberalLamps@reddit
Everyone complained about PTR welding on rails five years ago including on the Century C308. But maybe they had a point.
chuckisduck@reddit
my PTR doesn't have the welded rail...at first I was kinda bummed but I don't think I am missing out as 4.5 moa at 100 yards on a sled...of course this was with tula 308.
xKHAZx@reddit
military surplus rifles do not tend to sell well when they're permanently altered from military configuration
the entire point of a surplus G3 is the military pedigree
Mighty-Bagel-Calves@reddit
Hey I love my black cetme L with a welded on pic rail. I know I'm one of the weird ones though.
Diligent-Parfait-236@reddit
They sell a scope mount for $50.
HomersDonut1440@reddit
Doesn’t fit this since it has the mp5 rear sight
technical_righter@reddit
Damn. I have a c308 that I keep telling myself that I need to sell. Launches the brass. Reasonably accurate. This is going to make it harder. C308 the same as the CA3 I wonder?
2MGR@reddit
From what I've read, this one is better.
technical_righter@reddit
Damn. Sucks for me. Time to double down and buy one of these.
linkt101@reddit
So I was contemplating this when it dropped on Saturday and finally pulled the trigger no pun intended when I saw that it was assembled by PTR. Reviews seem solid so can't wait to get it on the range. The icing on the cake is that the military surplus store about 30 mins from me had authentic German mags, slings and cleaning kits too for a crazy low price!
FranklinNitty@reddit
Anyone know if this thing is MD legal?
nlickdenn@reddit
Unfortunately not
WoozyKinkajou@reddit
This is so tempting as a collectors piece.
SnarlingLittleSnail@reddit
One can only cry in Washinton
PlusThreexD@reddit
Been wanting a 308 for my first long range set up. This really shouldn't be it right?
AskMeWhyIFish@reddit
Probably not, scope mount options seem pricey and limited.
Heartland_Cucks_Suck@reddit
You can buy a HK claw style raised mount probably. I had a CTME like this.
One of the cheap mount companies like UMG or UTg made them.
I don’t shoot much anymore. It was like fifty bucks. I have sold the firearm.
FischlandchipZ@reddit
Doesn’t have the recoil lugs since they used the wrong rear sight and stampings, so a claw mount will walk forward under recoil.
Heartland_Cucks_Suck@reddit
Damn sorry :-(
Shoddy-Beginning810@reddit
Nope
accounts_baleeted@reddit
Get a cheap bolt gun
Cold-Fisherman-5768@reddit
You're joking... right?
accounts_baleeted@reddit
But 308 is sniper gun, rite?
Top-Bumblebee6061@reddit
Absolutely not….neither should .308 if we’re being honest. Not when 6.5 Creedmoor exists with the same cost per round and same availability. If you really wanted to dive heard first you could look into some other, more efficient cartridges and soon you’ll be well on your way to hand load. But this rifle specifically? Abysmal choice for long range/PRS type shooting is what I imagine you mean when you say long range shooting.
cdillon42@reddit
this, a couple years ago when .308 was sitting around 50cpr, 308 was the better choice, but now they are pretty much the same price
shadowcat999@reddit
For long range? Imho I'd go with some kind of AR10. The G3 style rifles I've shot typically have battlefield accuracy. So around 3-4 MOA. Plus the delayed blowback chews up your brass. I have a PTR and I love it, but there are more accurate 308s out there.
Equivalent_Reply_416@reddit (OP)
Yeah this is heavy, but finding a mount option might be tricky unless you wanna tack weld some shit on. DIY probably less than 80. https://hkparts.net/all-parts/hkp-picatinny-rail-for-hk-receivers-15-slot/
Pillzbaree@reddit
Negative. These are not long-range precision guns. My experience is 3-4 moa.
OtherwiseProposal130@reddit
I was going to do layaway for this but doesn’t look like it’s an option
FischlandchipZ@reddit
These are sadly a non-started because PTR made the dumbass decision not to include the recoil lugs necessary to use an optics mount.
The whole point of a parts kit gun is to be clone correct, and then they fuck up the receiver and rear sight.
Now, you can’t use things like a sphur stock since you need an optics mounted for that. You can’t do any fun red dot or scope stuff.
onyourleftbro@reddit
I know these were well received for what they are when they first came out, do we still feel this way now that some time has passed?
Caveman775@reddit
If it had a picatinny top if get it :/
greatestging@reddit
I would only trust these for irons shooting. The major problems with these is century opted not to weld on the standard issue recoil lug onto these in front of the rear sight that came on these FMP kits. I would not trust the long term zero of a scope mount without it especially since PTR receivers are known to be out of spec with the receiver side cuts where a mount clamps into
