What are some reliable SUV's that are stylish, sporty and reliable?
Posted by ooookevj@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 106 comments
I am currently in the market for buying my first suv. I currently drive a 2013 dodge charger sxt. I have had a lot of issues with my charger now so reliability and maintenance costs are a big factor for me.
I would like to know what are some SUV’s that are reliable (esp. cost efficient) yet stylish/sporty for a family (don’t have kids yet but plan to in the future).
I also plan on keeping this suv for a while (as you can tell from my charger).
I have heard Toyota, Lexus, Honda and Acura are the most reliable brands. My budget is ideally $50,000 and under.
IncoherentAnalyst@reddit
This is a big ask. Lol
Stylish, sporty, reliable, and cheap.
Mazda CX-90 may be the answer.
Blanketyblank2003@reddit
Didn’t say cheap. Their budget is $50,000.
Laz3r_C@reddit
Yea literally, Mazda is your only hope especially sticking under 50k
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
As I’m doing research, this is an option that I’ve been seeing. I will look into this. I don’t want a bmw just cause I’ve heard it’s not reliable and is expensive to maintain
Uptown_Chunk@reddit
Used to be true. We have an x5 plugin, and zero problems in three years, maintenence for the first 3 years is covered.
According_Flow_6218@reddit
Yep my used ‘22 BMW X5 has been dramatically better than my ‘22 Acura MDX.
I’ll never buy another Acura.
bchgrlee8998@reddit
I’ve had my MDX for almost 10 years now and not one issue. Oil changes and tires. It’s been so nice after having a VWTouareg that had something wrong with it constantly. Hard to go back to expensive mx and unreliability after having such a problem free vehicle. Strongly recommend Acura MDX.
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
Really? My parents have an RDX and they havent had any complaints yet. I am also very surprised of the positive reviews on the newer BWM's
According_Flow_6218@reddit
Yep. I went into the MDX with the assumption that BMW would be a bunch of problems and the Acura would be dead reliable. I had that so incredibly backwards. Plenty of other people complaining in the Acura subreddit.
One guy had his MDX windshield crack twice in exactly the same spot without ever noticing a rock hit on it, he was convinced the design was flawed and putting stress on the windshields there. Guess what? Funny enough, mine cracked in exactly same spot too. $2500 repair (not covered by warranty of course) and had to wait months for the part. I wonder why there’s such a shortage of MDX windshields. Hmmmmmm.
Rab_in_AZ@reddit
I like the Ford Explorer. You can get fully loaded in your range.
DadVan-Soton@reddit
lol, OP wants reliable.
Rab_in_AZ@reddit
J.D. Power Ratings: J.D. Power gives the 2025 Explorer a "Great" rating for Quality and Reliability.
DadVan-Soton@reddit
I designed the headlamp bracket for ford ranger, and it was an utter shitshow, from the original design spec from Ford, to working with a tooling company in the middle of India that doesn’t use CAD software.
I’ll never buy a ford, and won’t even be a passenger in a ranger. Nope Nope nope!
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
See that was my problem with my charger, after the 8-9 year mark, I have had constant issues with it. I feel like I spend more money on the fix than the car is actually worth now. (granted i used tf out of my charger lol)
Krestationss@reddit
I bought an explorer ST and it's the greatest vehicle I've ever owned. With a tune it'll beat a cherokee SRT and costs 20k+ less then the SRT.
It has massage seats for crying out loud.
Impressive-Crab2251@reddit
No one wants a used European brand unless you know how to wrench on them or you have enough disposable income and a second vehicle. Btw Kia, Hyundai, stellantis are junk.
Zealousideal_Pain374@reddit
He said his budget is $50k. That’s not cheap.
EmotionalHorse5404@reddit
The most stylish, aggressive-looking SUV on the market to me is the Mercedes GLE63s that thing looks absolutely beautiful
The most reliable is probably going to be a toyota rav4 or lexus models
Affordable? Maybe a mazda cx50?
If i could build the perfect car I'd take a mercedes gls63s body and stuff a Lexus GX engine in it.
Gunk_Olgidar@reddit
Any Japanese suv that suits your budget that is not a Mitsubishi.
FunkyCameleon@reddit
Montero gen4 is one of the most reliable SUVs ever made just not sold everywhere but here in Mexico you still see it. Best 4x4 ever
AFB27@reddit
X3 30i or M40i
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
Do you have any personal experience to the BMW's? If so i would like your perspective since they havent been very reliable..
Zealousideal-Bid1586@reddit
Fr just look into the B58 motor and what it’s done, it’s one of the best engines in the last decade
AFB27@reddit
So I have an M340i and I have a friend with a 330i, not the exact same but close enough. The M340i has been... Interesting to say the least, and my experience is not similar to the usual. I had a failed wheel bearing at 6K, diff leak at 15K, and some flex disc / driveshaft bearing issues around 25K. Not normal at all for a newer, but I do want to be honest; I have had zero issues since then, and the car has almost $45K miles now.
Are there more cost efficient cars to buy? Absolutely. But of all the Germans, that X3 will not only be the most reliable, but it's also the best bang for buck. I was originally looking at a Mercedes that turned out to be $5K more with way less options and performance, so the M340i was just a no brainer there. The B58 is an extremely reliable and fuel efficient yet powerful engine, and the B48 is pretty much a B58 minus two cylinders.
Let me know if you have any specific questions
7empestSpiralout@reddit
Mercedes GLE
Short_Falcon_3149@reddit
I own a GLE 2021. Looking to get rid of it.
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
Not a fan of mercedes due to the expense and reliability
7empestSpiralout@reddit
I’ve had a 2013 glk for 11 years. It’s been absolutely the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. Only oil changes, brakes, and tires.
StarsandMaple@reddit
If you like bad choices, but can find a good one….
4M Q7 Audi with either the 2.0t or 3.0t.
One suffers from shitty water pumps, the other suffers from PCV issues, and some people report carbon seized piston rings, which I attribute to people babying the car and not getting enough heat and pressure in the cylinders regularly. Sport SUV should be driven hard once in a while.
No issues to mine, drives amazing, 2-3k in mods gets you close to 500whp. Friends have had their A6/7 and other CREC equipped models at those power levels for long time with 0 issues.
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
I really like the Q7's but they arent as reliable as i thought..
StarsandMaple@reddit
It's give and take. They're fairly reliable and in my opinion not bad to work on.
I've been working on VAG cars for... A long time as a hobby so that may be why.
seeker-0@reddit
X3 M40i.
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
Do/have you own any BWM suv's?
seeker-0@reddit
Yeah an F25 X3.
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
How is it so far?
seeker-0@reddit
Pretty good I’d say. Only has needed a valve cover gasket, a thermostat, and some suspension bits in the front, this over four years of ownership. This is the one with the N52.
Money_Emu3344@reddit
50k? Get a used Lexus GX
Uptown_Chunk@reddit
didn't even think about that. those new ones look real nice.
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
I looked at the new ones and they are $55k and up. I wish I could realistically get either a GX or TX
Uptown_Chunk@reddit
The older version isn't nearly as cool looking, but three rows, very comfortable and capable off-road. I think they're a bit undervalued because the new ones look so much cooler. Though for 50K, a 3-7 yo lexus LX is amazing at everything but gas mileage, not what I'd choose for a daily driver.
Uptown_Chunk@reddit
BMWs used to not be reliable, but that is kind of changing, and the X5 is one of their most reliable vehicles. The plug in hybrid has over 500hp and goes 0-60 in like 3.5. Don't know what suspension trickery is going on, but that car feels smaller and handles better than an impreza that weighs half as much. Not new for 50K, but 1 to 2 years old for sure, since they still depreciate like they aren't reliable.
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
Do/have you own any BMW suv's?
Uptown_Chunk@reddit
We've had the x5 45e plugin hybrid for three years now, with no issues. I love it so much, I'm looking for more excuses to drive places. The air suspension is incredible to ride in (but really any air suspension is) Taken it in once a year for paidfor maintenence. I've been surprised how trouble free it has been. Consumer reports surveys say it isn't bad for reliability.
My family's experiences with new toyotas (rav4 plugin) and kia ev6 have been much less trouble free.
Stinkytofu86@reddit
infiniti, lexus, acura, mazda, subbie
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
Subbies.. really? Do you own one?
Stinkytofu86@reddit
yes 2000 rs, put quite a bit in it and sold it to some kid
ColorblindCabbage@reddit
Hear me out.
I've got a Bronco Sport. I personally dig the look (varies by personal taste), it's got enough support to be sporty (various roof racks, storage options, various aftermarket parts), and it's been good to me so far. A few recalls so far that haven't affected my model year.
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
I like the way those look but since I already own an American brand, i wont be going back.
TheThirdBrainLives@reddit
Honda Passport
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
Saw this but wasnt sporty enough for me
Admirable-Gate-2557@reddit
It's an SUV. It's not going to be sporty or stylish.
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
Ofc it can. The new TX, MDX and 4Runners are so stylish and sexy. Those are the cars that I would get if i could
Uptown_Chunk@reddit
disagree, maybe that's true for body on frame, but a crossover isn't really different functionally from a hatch or a wagon, as long as you can keep the weight down and body roll controlled, they can be incredibly fun to toss around corners, and I beat just about every sports car off the line.
Mortenubby@reddit
Toyota and Lexus. The Landcruiser and it's Lexus cousin are what you want.
Fit-Minimum-5494@reddit
LXs are extremely expensive to fix and maintain, even if reliable
Mortenubby@reddit
We call it the Landcruiser tax, and they may just be adding Lexus tax to it. But OP didn't ask for cheap, he asked for reliable
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
The lexus TX and a decent 4Runner seems to be so expensive for no reason
sum_dude44@reddit
Used X3 or X5 Lexus RX or TX
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
I really like the TX but since its a newer model, they seem to be expensive and i feel like they will drop in price in a year or two. I like the RX hybrid but i have to see it in person to actually make a decision.
GetawayDriving@reddit
You have heard correctly and can also add Mazda to your list. Mazda is just as reliable and also very stylish.
No bad choices from those 5 brands.
Illustrious_Entry413@reddit
Eh, taste is subjective but I hate the front of modern Acura
Zaphod_Heart_Of_Gold@reddit
Of all the opinions this is certainly one of them. Do you remember the Acura beam years? THAT was bad, current ones look pretty great to most of us
Illustrious_Entry413@reddit
Yeah the beak was rough, I do prefer the Acura front over the Lexus front though
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
The front of the new MDX looks very nice imo. I like that aggressive sporty looks.
redditforman11@reddit
Mazda has come a long way and no longer rust out by 8 years, but no, they are not as reliable as a toyota or lexus.
FinancialEcho7915@reddit
Honda passport elite.
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
I saw this model but wasnt too fond of it due it looks like a soccer mom car.
Intstnlfortitude@reddit
People love the bronco sport. I Don’t get it, but hey to each their own. Also RAV4
FordF150ChicagoFan@reddit
Neither of those are sporty
GreenHairyMartian@reddit
Depends on how you define sporty.
The 2006-2013 RAV4 with the 3.5 v6 was quicker than any other car Toyota made in that year range. 270hp, AWD, it's no slouch.
Handling is fine, not what I would consider sports car, but suspension is stiff enough to not roll around too bad compared to other SUVs.
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
I personally wouldnt buy an American brand but thats just me.. RAV4's are nice but I cant see myself driving that esp moving from a charger lol
Aromatic-Elephant442@reddit
Are Bronco prices back to earth? They were so insane for awhile that I never paid attention to the car.
ColorblindCabbage@reddit
The regular Bronco is still pretty wild, but the Bronco Sport prices seem similar to others in its class. I just bought one six months ago for $34k.
est94@reddit
Used Porsche cayennes are crazy undervalued. The maintenance and repairs are expensive but they are extremely well designed vehicles
Uptown_Chunk@reddit
Best driving mid sized SUV out there. Not as good overall as the X5, but it drives like a porsche for sure.
est94@reddit
Never driven the X5, what makes it beat a Cayenne in your opinion?
Uptown_Chunk@reddit
X5 seats more comfortable, about 15k cheaper similarly outfitted, plug in hybrid with bigger range, better gas mileage, more cargo room, more reliable, automated driving features are more advanced and make stop and go traffic almost pleasant, back seats more comfortable and easier to get car seats into. Basically all the other car stuff other than pure driving experience (Note I only drove plug in hybrid version of cayenne). And I drive a kid around most of the time, it's probably best I don't have a car TOO fun to drive, because I like it too much and I have more safety considerations now.
ooookevj@reddit (OP)
How reliable are they both? As I said earlier, i want this suv to last a while and probably look to start a family soon..
Buckeyebornandbred@reddit
X5 45e gang represent!
mega-man-0@reddit
“The maintenance and repairs are expensive…”
Hence NOT undervalued
According_Flow_6218@reddit
I second this. Porsche build quality is outstanding.
DadVan-Soton@reddit
I’d have to agree with this. Very few issues with these. Just get the transfer box oil changed every 4-5 years and you’ll be good.
jhumph88@reddit
I’ve had 5 Cayennes. They’re just about the perfect vehicle in my opinion. I’ve had a V6, S, GTS 6-speed, a diesel and a Turbo. Between all of them I had the following problems: the DEF tank heater on the diesel needed to be replaced (covered under CPO warranty) and the active radiator flaps on the turbo got stuck shut (also covered under CPO). Maintenance can be expensive, but you can save a good chunk of money by finding a reputable independent shop.
mega-man-0@reddit
You have a small budget considering all your asks, I would say the turbo Mazda CX-5 or CX-50 turbo is really your best bet.
There are plenty of reliable SUVs (Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV), but no one would describe them as “sporty”.
At your limited budget of $50K Audis and BMWs are out of your price range.
DerSchweisser1@reddit
Volvo XC60 bro
JSTootell@reddit
There is no such thing as a "stylish" "SUV" (you mean cross over, there is no sport in these), unless your style is Karen.
There are less hideous ones, but just less hideous.
Uptown_Chunk@reddit
Take a look at the original audi etron, now the q8 etron. It's basically a tall wagon, and a big bottomed beauty. Do you hate it?
WAR_T0RN1226@reddit
Disgusting coupe SUV trash
Uptown_Chunk@reddit
Not the sportback. the wagon bruh. What's a pretty car to you, since you know what you don't like so much?
autofan06@reddit
Acura Rdx with the k20c4 in it (3rd gen 2019+) is a wonderful option in this segment. Easily in your budget even new I believe but plenty of 20-30k mile examples out there for 35-40k ish
Reliability- the k20c4 is a detuned and smaller turbo version of the k20c1 which is the civic type r engine it is also sold as a racing crate engine. Long story short it’s an engine way overbuilt and then detuned for normal applications. No awd Acura uses a cvt transmission so you will have a nice normal reliable automatic transmission.
Sporty - it’s got a k20c in stock form it has a ton of down low torque and is quite sporty. If you ever feel the need for more power a simple ecu reflash is known to make crazy 20-30 hp gains and tons more torque. There is plenty of aftermarket support to make even more power or just open up the intake for more whoosh noises.
Buckeyebornandbred@reddit
Used BMW X5. 40i
Tuques@reddit
Lol @ all the people suggesting German vehicles
Aromatic-Elephant442@reddit
Subaru Forester should be on your list too! Some of them are great cars.
est94@reddit
The CVT would exclude all the subaru suvs
jeepsies@reddit

Revolutionary_Pilot7@reddit
I have a 4Runner and I love it although it’s not very sporty
Go-BirdsATX@reddit
Just worth mentioning, check out SQ5s. I got one when I went to an suv from dozens and dozens of cars, and I enjoy it
Affectionate_Rice520@reddit
Gently used MDX is probably the one I’d push. Handles well and as it’s a Honda it should be reliable
keithrc@reddit
They need to be extra reliable.
TehSvenn@reddit
Used Macans go for pretty reasonable money, as far as I'm aware they have no significant reliability issues.
FordF150ChicagoFan@reddit
The Ford Explorer ST is your best bang for buck. It's RWD, tuned for aggressive driving and has a 400hp turbo 6. Ford's turbo-6 engines pull hard too (I've got one).
CyanShadow42@reddit
With that budget I'd go for a Subaru Outback Wilderness, but I'm biased, I have an Outback and love it, but wouldn't mind a little extra towing, acceleration, and ground clearance.
runtimemess@reddit
Chevy Blazer (or any of their poverty children like 2nd gen Trax or Trailblazer)
TheKoziONE@reddit
New RAV4 was just announced, hybrid only.
est94@reddit

The only vehicle more reliable than a Toyota is a Lexus.
